AMERICAblog: Conservative Andrew Sullivan asks: Was Mccain really tortured?

  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Guess McCain's nothing but a big baby.

    He wasn't tortured.

It was nothing but "fraternity pranks."
  • txexspeedy · 1 year ago
So It also follows if he wasn't tortured OR that torture does not produce bogus information that all the information and cooperation he gave to the Vietcong was actually accurate and voluntary. Which makes McCain a sympathizer not a patriot -- Right?
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
In some circles they would call him a traitor and accuse him of treason.
  • Chris From Maine · 1 year ago
    Very good point.

Also another point is that torture doesnt work. They tortured McCain for years and got no information out of it (supposedly, we will never know if McCain broke since he obviously would never admit it..)
  • fostert · 1 year ago
"According to the Bush administration's definition of torture, McCain was therefore not tortured."

True, but it gets worse. John McCain voted for the Military Commissions Act, which defines the treatment he received in Vietnam as not being torture. So even McCain thinks he wasn't tortured.

    Great point.

Oh you don't have to worry they will try to ruin Andy. Andrew being gay will do it. Mark my words. They did it to the guy that wrote a book about Hillary. When he told them he was gay the kicked him out of the rightwing media machine. What did he do. He got even and wrote a book and started Media matters. Good for him. He showed those bastards.
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
I don't think he was kicked out, he left after realizing how fraudulent his beliefs in the Republican movement was. Read "Blinded by the Right". It is a full account of how a reasonable person can get seduced by the right to betray yourself and your country. After you read it, share it with your repub family members and friends.
  • SouthernYankee · 1 year ago
Thanks my husband already has the book and I just couldn't remember the name of it. Husband not home yet to ask. I don't talk to may of republican family members because we also end up arguing. So we don't talk about it.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
this needs to be kept alive and spoon fed to the MSM.

it is true, it points up bushco's colossal failure to condemn torture, and it destroys McCain's use of his POW status as qualification for president.
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
And to think McCain betrayed the US by giving them Anti-American propaganda during mildly unpleasant interrogation techniques. He sung like a bird and agreed to aid the enemy. What do they call that? Yellow belly traitors?
  • whomod · 1 year ago
Careful there Andrew, you're likely to make Sean Hannity's head explode.
  • jr · 1 year ago
McCain hurt his arms in the initial crash but the media pretends he hurt them being "tortured"
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
    John,

That's right up there with "Gee, Mrs. McCain.....that CAST has sure been on your SPRAINED wrist a long, long time"

Guess that would insinuate frailty. Think he'll jump with H.W. ?
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
Some people" question that cast on Mrs. McCain's arm and wonder if the rumors of John's volital temper had anythin g to do with it. At least that is what "some people" are saying....
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
I though it was a given.
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
Yes, for "some people" it is a given. I just wonder if the pundits shouldn't give this a good look, since, ya know, it's out there and all. Is John McCain a wife beater? It's a fair question, she has a cast and he hasn't denied it!
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Sometimes he has the keep the c*nt in line.

McCain didn't get waterboarded so he had a very pleasant stay at the Hanoi Hilton.

She has been on the list, but from the picture propeller used and the comments, this is a freeper site, so I wouldn't give it too much credibiity. I am wondering why Richardson has been so quiet and hoping it's him.
  • scottinsf · 1 year ago
Good lord, that picture makes her look like she eats nails for breakfast.

I like her more after seeing that.
  • NealB · 1 year ago
Why isn't Hanoi Hilton available on Netflix or from amazon.com? This movie has been out for twenty years, but it's still not available on DVD? It will be available on November 11, 2008.

Please, try not to be Republicans. Separate out McCain's war record from his dispicable politics. To disparage his service record is a Republican strategy, evil, wrong, dispicable and sickening. Whatever else McCain did, he did serve in our military, was shot down and was a prisoner of war. Are there any here that make similar claims for themselves? I have no doubts in my mind that being a POW of the Viet Cong was not something I would have enjoyed, nor would I wish it upon anyone else except maybe the most disgusting, such as Bush, Cheney, or Rove, who would have sung to put canaries to shame.

McCain's politics is a completely different story. All the negatives apply, evil, wrong, dispicable, sickening, liar, criminal, cheat, pond scum, and even worse, Republican. But that is distinct from his having served in our military and been a POW. There are those who have such records and deserve our condemnation, those being the SwiftBoaters, but I don't think McCain was ever one of those. We are liberals. Let us never abandon those standards or we might was well be Republican and neocons as there would be no difference and no reason to oppose them.

You may be right, but that does not diminish the fact that he voted for torture. That fact alone should disqualify him for presidency. He was torutred and yet he voted for it to be done on others, based on the 911 LIE. What we have is a traitorous media that has lied to the American people, CONTINUALLY. They too are complicit in this "war on terror" bullshit. +uck the right wingers is what I say, dems and progressives have been playing to nice with these punks.

And another point: STOP DEIFYING MILITARY SERVICE.!!!
  • Obamaniac · 1 year ago
I agree with vkobaya. Don't go down this road. First, Sullivan is hardly a conservative- he's a diehard Obama fan these days. Second, there is plenty of stuff to rightfully attack McCain on policy-wise without disparaging the fact (yes FACT) that he is an American hero deserving of our respect for what he went through. It doesn't qualify him to be PResident, but it is something that if you begin attacking will turn off alot of people who we otherwise need to vote for Obama.
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
Actually, McCain is very vulnerable on real issues, his unblinking support of Bush, his flip-flops not for principle but flip-flopping from political expedience. his sudden conversion to fundamentalist Christianity, his foreign policy mistakes, zero knowledge of economic affairs and basic dishonesty, the Bush crime record of war crimes, torture, murder, lies, corruption, unbid contracts worth billions, political corruption such as the Justice Department firing scandals, missing or embezzled billions and trillions, and cheating repeatedly on marital affairs (if we want to roll in the pig pen, this is at least a legitimate one to use).

Admittedly, most of these issues seem not to have any traction. The principle of the repeating things often enough applies and given enough repetition, people will be convinced because these issues are true. The Republicans are highly effective using repetition to convince people their lies are true, such as the absurdity about the liberal media. We have truth on our side and repetition should be even more effective for us. But rolling in the filthy, stinking pig pen over lies about McCain's service record are unworthy of our side. We have mountains of real issues that are available to attack McCain without resorting to dishonest Swiftboating crap about McCain’s service record. And, lies boomerang when people realize we are lying.

The reality is we need to be persistent. One telling isn’t enough. The Republicans know that and they use repetition highly effectively to push their lies. Just because we tell the truth, we can’t expect that everyone realizes it or that they even hear the truth the first time. Republicans only have lies. We have the truth. Let’s make effective use of being on the side of the good guys. We might even be effective in converting Obama to a White Hat. <g>

Understand too, that the moral high ground, not the pretense of holding the moral high ground, is one weapon that is unavailable to McCain, Bush and the neocons.
  • LisaLV711 · 1 year ago
He's as much as a hero as all the other POW's. What did he do that was soooo much more herotic than the other POW's? He not only shouldn't run for office, he should be seeing a psychiatrist on regular basis. Enough of what he did 50+ years ago. WHAT HAS HE DONE FOR ME LATELY? He'w a mean and nasty tyrant -- period -- end of story. The media gives him a free pass on every insensitive statement he makes. No more pictures of him laying down when he was captured. I want to see more of what he has or had accomplished when he was chair of the POW/MIA committee and why he was SO against those families that wanted to find their loved ones. Show that. THAT would heroric.

Nowadays. it is McSCUM who is torturing all of us!
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 1 year ago
Expect this: "When the gooks do it, it's torture against brave and innocent young Americans who are trying to defeat evil; when we do it, it's a necessary form of enhanced interrogation in the war against evidoers."
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
"According to the Bush administration's definition of torture, McCain was therefore not tortured."

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

We MUST NOT let this drop! We must chant this on the streets and include it in every letter to the editor. It matters not that this seems like something Karl Rove would do. It is TRUE, and Rove never dealt with truth.
  • barts · 1 year ago
Macain camp try to demonize him? Of course, Andrew's gay. I'm surprised the republicans didn't try to deny him residence given his HIV status.
  • Texasexile · 1 year ago
As the daughter of a fellow prisoner at the Hanoi Hilton, I can verify that torture happened, to McCain, and the rest. I have stories in my head I wish I didn't know.

My step-father, AJ Myers, Colonel USAF, suffered the same kind of treatment, and at the same time as McCain, at the same place.

Once he was re-patrioted, he differed with McCain on whether there were any US military personnel remaining in southeast asia. He was very disappointed that Nixon and Kissenger declared that they would not go back into the area to look for missing soldiers. He was convinced our government chose to abandon them. Read the book, Kiss The Boys Goodbye.
