AMERICAblog: Conservatives go bonkers over "esprit decor" if gays are let into the military

lol... he had to get "skin to skin" close to keep warm, how... gay.

Leathernecks sleeping skin to skin??? Someone's gotta be locked and loaded...
PS--Even when I served 30 years ago the ranks were full of gay men and women doing their jobs. Though I had many veiled and not so veiled invitations from my fellows and the various locals over my service, my sexuality like my work remained classified while Uncle Sugar owned me.

RE: warned of "a band of lesbians that harassed new females," . . . Hmm, as opposed to heterosexual men raping the new females?

egggggggggzactly.
I never had any trouble with the Lez gurls not taking "No" for an answer, but I was harrassed by the guys and twice I was in situations where I came very close to being sexually assaulted by my fellow airmen. In my dorm, I had a gay female suite mate (we shared a bathroom), a gay man down the hall who was "out", and several others who stayed in the closet. never had a problem. Never had any bashing incidents or anything. but then again, this was CA.

Elaine Donnelly evidently believes that simply being gay or lesbian constitutes sexual misconduct.
wow. that is ignorant.
Soundboy_jeff_meanie
actually... she doesn't seem to see that it makes no difference whether that woman was attacked by a group of lesbians or a group of hetero men.
interesting... she was attacked! so donnelly is saying that if we were allowed to serve openly, we'd sexually assault people all the time?
yeah, that happens every day where I work... ya know you get a few gay guys together and you just decide to gangbang some straight guy for lunch every now and then, ya know?
egad, that woman is an idiot. lesbian gangs?? WTF?!
KarenMrsLloydRichards
Donnelly should concern herself not with gangs of predatory lesbians (which are largely a figment of her overheated imagination), but with the hundreds of sexual assaults on women, by male civilian contractors, happening in a war zone. She is a civilian who has no authority to weigh in on military matters.

Their points are implying that there are no gays in the military. OMG. at least 10%. Most soldiers I know are gay!
Soundboy_jeff_meanie
exactly. we're everywhere... this is kinda like the president of Iran saying 'we have no homosexuals here'.
whatever.
what pisses me off is that this woman's talking points are essentially that if I'm allowed to be 'out' in the military... you're accepting of me... which she translates into 'we'll all be having sex all the time' or 'its okay for me to force myself on you'. WTF?
why is it that fundies are always obsessed with sex anyway??

Another right wing scam...the CMR boasts an impressive 'Board of Advisors' on their website but guidestar shows only two Directors: Richard Trefry and Phyllis Schlafly. Amusingly I found this bio of two military experts on their "Board of Advisors":
"WILLIAM A. & PRUDENCE FIELDS have performed in musical theater, and at the 1984 and 1988 Republican National Conventions, as a bass-baritone and mezzo-soprano.. Mr. Fields, who received his juris doctor degree from Harvard Law School, currently serves on bank and hospital boards in Marietta, Ohio. Previously, he had been Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law Section of the Ohio State Bar Association, a Board Member on Character and Fitness for the Supreme Court of Ohio, and a member of the editorial board of the Probate Law Journal of Ohio. As a professional actress, Prudence Fields has played leading roles in many musicals, and appeared in the original cast of Funny Girl. Prudence has been the county chairman in eight political campaigns, and is a long-time activist in Eagle Forum."
Um.... did I miss the story about the gang of lesbians that Elaine was talking about or was she offering a "what if?" scenario?
If it really happened I'm sure the media would've been all over it, don't you think? Somebody would've spilled the beans to the press, but I don't recall anything remotely like it. Do any of you?

The reason that fundies fight so tenaciously on the issue of gays in the military has nothing to do with any real concerns that gay people would somehow impede the mlitary mission. It's a symbolic, ideological battle over the legitimization of homosexuality. If it's OK for gays to serve in the armed forces, then it follows that being gay is OK in a broader sense. That's what freaks out the cultural neanderthals.

actually, in the article above... they pretty much state that the best way to defeat DADT is to give the repugnican right a microphone and let them talk.
She was apparently talking about something that happened in 1974...
I know of something similar that happened in 1975 in Ft. Gordon, GA, Co. D (it was a communications electronics training company)... very bizarre, surreal situation -- co-ed barracks (men on 2 floors women on 1 floor... the women's floor wasn't safe, the men couldn't figure out why they couldn't get dates --- CID investigation resulted in the Co. commander being replaced, and the "Little General" ( a very butch lesbian corporal that had been there way longer than she should have been, was not in classes (she wasn't part of the training staff, but was supposed to be a student) was transferred out.
The "Little General" ran the floor with the help of a couple of her "close friends" .
The upshot of it was that no one said why the Co. Commander was replaced, and nothing was done about the assaults that happened. It just all "went away".

OMG! the case of the 'lesbian gang attacking Cynthia Yost' was from 1974!
okay... think back to 1974... how many women actually reported abuse, sexual or otherwise?
so... she's taking an isolated incident from 1974 and saying 'this is what will happen' in 2008?...

What is it about sex or anyone unlike them that makes Conservatives retreat into the realm of fantasy? "My god, if we let gays openly join the military, our poor, helpless hetero soldiers will be terrorized by roving bands of lesbians!"
Is there any anecdote so crazy that these ignorant dumbasses on the Right won't believe it?

My partner served in the Air Force for 8 years. He and his fellow gay officers (men and Lesbians) were pretty open and out while serving at the air base (I won't name these because I don't want the Pentagon investigating.) They all worked well with the str8 staff...all good buddies...the str8 guys would often go to gay bars near the base for beers with the gay officers. No one freaked out. No one had issues. They shared barracks, showers, etc. Did they hook up? Sometimes but never on base. They would date after meeting in gay bars or at parties. Commanders at the base knew who they were, and nothing mattered. They were getting their missions done. It was only after DODT came in that all this bullshit started. DODT has only one goal: to enervate the white trash bible thumping GOP base to vote. Throws the gays under the bus, Mr and Mrs Clinton, and you too can carry some Southern red states.

BTW...Gays in the military won't only benefit the decor...it will benefit the health/physical well being of the straight boys. Have you seen the pics of them on the news--how do you get a beer belly in Iraq? Gays will only inspire them to get to work on their physiques!

It was my life experience, serving in the Army from '75-'79 in the 519th MP Bt at Ft. Meade, MD and having many, many friends serving in the area including the Pentagon, that you couldn't run the United States Military without us.
Period.

I think the funniest part is the audacious remark by a conservative about 'selfless service." I don't think a right winger could even imagine what being "selfless" is - it is as foreign to them as the existence of other American citizens who don't share their sexual fantasies about others in the public square.

I wonder what Miss Donnelly's solution for all the HETEROSEXUAL assaults that occur in the military. Perhaps we should bar straight men from the military?
What a ditz!

I'm late to the thread, but had to comment anyway.. They were talking about this on the Diane Reems (sp) Show on NPR this am. They had retired military officers on the show from both sides of the issue, and one loser politician who is against repealing it. the proponents for reapeal of dadt completely trampled the oponents in their arguments Their reasoning was so much better, and made so much more common sense than the oponents arguments. One of the guests was the lesbian captain ex-intel officer (Drada, I think, is her name) who just told her story recently and is lobbying for the repeal dadt. Being a veteran myself, and having done some volunteer work with SLDN, this issue means a great deal to me. The sooner we repeal dadt and replace it with a common-sense policy which allows glb's to serve openly, the better off our military will be.

She needs to step aside. What an ignorant excuse she gave. In her book, straights can't do there job with gays around. How silly and how ignorant. Rep. Patrick Murphy made her look completely foolish as well as Sergeant Alva, a person who actually can speak about the interaction of soldiers. You will notice, she never did answer his question.

Obviously see's over concerned about sex, maybe she doesn't get enough.
If it's not "espirit de corps," but "espirit decor" Jones is so concerned with-- everyone knows that gay men are simply FABULOUS with decor! We'll have a FABULOUSLY decorated military! DO ask, DO tell, and DO put up luxurious window treatments in our troops' mess halls! You go, boys!
PS--Even when I served 30 years ago the ranks were full of gay men and women doing their jobs. Though I had many veiled and not so veiled invitations from my fellows and the various locals over my service, my sexuality like my work remained classified while Uncle Sugar owned me.
