AMERICAblog: Could Sally Quinn be any more painful?

  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
i have a real problem with the word "worship"
  • red_dwarf · 1 year ago
It takes the notion of regarding something exemplary to a level of weirdness.
  • tlsintx · 1 year ago
    :D

    well said.

Does Sally wear boxers or briefs?

I would like to see the O go to a Mosque just for grins.

Surely Scarborough has booked Quinn to be a frequent guest on his show. Note how they have shunned Lawrence ODonnell since his ripping of Buchanan? Joe only wants people on his show who will agree with him and his hacks; Mika and Willie. Occasionally Barnicle comes up with something intelligent.
  • Bob · 1 year ago
Mika, what a puke, and makes me wanna. She does not have a brain, or at least give a good impression of lacking one. I know here Dad loves her but, jesus, he must me ashamed, a lot, of her inability to express an original thought.. Must have missed the day Barnicle said something intelligent, but I guess it might have happened.. Willie is just silly, and the best part, he does not have to work hard. A natural talent.
  • red_dwarf · 1 year ago
Every rat needs its own hole. What Quinn has failed to discover in life is that periodically, one must find a new hole.
  • dcredhead · 1 year ago
    Wow. Judgey wudgey. Wow.

    A couple of things:

    1) Sally Quinn is now the "spirituality" columnist for the Post, yes. One thing that I think is great about her posts on her blog is that she focuses on ALL RELIGIONS -- not just Christianity. A very welcome thing in a world where the right doesn't hesitate to paint Islamic Americans as terrorists.

    2) She was one of the first women in the WaPo newsroom, and played in that boys club LONG BEFORE she held the position she has now. I've worked in newsrooms and been one of the few women and let me tell you, it ain't fun. It's hard. It's sexist. She's one of many women at the Post who really pioneered roles for women in the newsroom.

    3) Sally Quinn was BLISTERING in her commentary against Sarah Palin. As the mother of a special needs child, she was one of the ONLY WOMEN that went after her publicly and questioned her mortality as a mother... that her "I'm a mother first" is bullshit. She also went after her for making her daughter the poster child for teen pregnancy.

    4) Finally, I know quite a few progressives that are religious and spiritual. I/weI think it's important that the President set a "tone" of where he worships. If he chooses an inclusive church (ie., one that supports women's rights and gay rights, gay marriage and women being ministers -- DON'T you think that sends a message? I do.

And I'm a little surprised at the tone of painting her a bubble headed bimbo. 'Cause she ain't.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
    'Cause she ain't'...

That is good to know !
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
Well said, dcredhead. What no one seems to discuss is whether or not the Obamas will choose a black church, a white church, or a multi-ethnic church. All are possibilities.

Sally Quinn's suggestion of the National Cathedral rather cleverly gives Obama an "excuse" not to choose a black church in DC, since some of the biggest black churches in DC are anti-gay. Going to an anti-gay church could be catastrophic. The National Cathedral, however, could provide the security the Obamas require, and it is offensive to almost no one.
  • Mum48 · 1 year ago
Thanks for your comments, which seem to be grounded in compassion and common sense. I read the article by Quinn and didn't find myself as offended as I was supposedly expected to be.

I think it's rather myopic to think that where the Obamas choose to worship ISN'T important, in that it is going to be scrutinized and criticized by some quarters, just as their choice of Sidwell Friends (from what I've read, an excellent choice) will be scrutinized and criticized. (I'm already hearing the chattering about opting out of a public school.)

I'm hoping that the new tone that the Obamas seem to be setting will eventually reach every corner of the blogosphere, but until that happens, thanks to you, dcredhead, for your level-headedness.

I find it ironic that when Sally gave birth to her son, she told People magazine that if he had flunked his amnio, she "absolutely" would have aborted him--then when he was born, he had congenital defects that amniocentesis is unable to detect. Bet her son feels SO wanted.
  • DCres · 1 year ago
Say what you want, the Cathedral is a good choice.
  • Older_Wiser · 1 year ago
If Sally Quinn hadn't married the boss (Ben Bradlee whom she went after while he was married), she wouldn't have the cache she thinks she has. And she didn't like having the Clintons turn down her party invitation and kept her claws out for them.

    All the dope: www.washingtonian.com/articles/people/3760.html
  • Dave of the Jungle · 1 year ago
I watch Monty Python's "Life of Brian" every Sunday.
  • MrsTarquinBiscuitbarrel · 1 year ago
Well, this at least means I'll see the Obama girls in my neighborhood, as I did Chelsea Clinton.

But the choice of Sidwell was a slam-dunk, the most obvious choice to make (the Biden graddaughters, who are close to the Obama girls, go there). Anyone could have made it. I could have predicted it. In fact, I did.

When is the not-so-Mighty Quinn going to say of the Obamas, as she did when the Clintons came to town, that Washington is "not their town"? This sucking-up is repellent.
  • Apphouse50 · 1 year ago
This bloviating faux-Christian Pearl Mesta-wannabe really oughta be heading down to Palm Beach permanently. When she was on the CBS Morning News with the great Hughes Rudd I felt so sorry for Rudd to be saddled with this dingbat. Then she got fired but Luck stepped in and she snagged Ben Bradlee.

She really is insufferable, and I wonder how many of the new breed heading into town are gonna put up with her salons anymore now that religion's stock is, uh, taking the overdue hit it so richly deserves.
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 1 year ago
But she's not faux Christian. She's not even sure she believes in a God. Until last year she called herself an atheist.
  • Apphouse50 · 1 year ago
Whatever her religiosity thing is, it's irritating and rings false. I've heard her Jesusing it up on Imus. Whatever the chic thing in "beliefing" is, Sally's got it goin' on in spades these days.

She's a dabbler. Soon she'll be waxing eloquent and breathlessly droning about something else.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
They'll go to the National Cathedral and then they'll go to the National Shrine and then they'll go to the UU down the street and never ever go to the Washington Mosque and they'll visit the Holocaust Center upon invitation and then they'll go to the church they already go to but nobody knew that and once in a while they'll stay home on Sunday morning to read the funny papers. Does the WaPo print a funny paper? Besides Sally Quinn, I mean.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
I agree, Joe...Sally is a primo example of wheel-spinning Kool Kid nonsense and she's sure to cut a wide swath on Mourning Joe this coming week.
The real authority on DC society died three years ago this coming June, former Washington Star columnist Betty Beale.
As a kid, I devoured Ms. Beale's column every Sunday in "the women's section" of my local paper, the rank Cincinnati Enquirer.
This obit gives a flavor of her straight-forward style...The old girl was never naughty but always insightful and info-packed.
The wry but never flashy Ms. Beale is on my short list of deceased news professionals sorely missed today...

"The reality is that the cathedral serves as a sacred space for the nation," says Sam Lloyd, dean of the cathedral. "A place the nation looks to in critical times."

Ummm...no. I forget that it's even there for months at a time.

And how about this. Sally: it's none of your fucking business where the Obamas go to church. She probably just wants to make sure it's not one of those tack y Neee-gro churches with the unseemly loud singing and clapping and such.

I know the first thing I worry about in a new president is where he is going to worship. It's second only to where his children will go to school and whether or not he exercises once or twice a day. /snark

    I'm all for denominational loyalty.

Here are several places right in DC that the President-Elect and his family could attend.

I'm a an Catholic and a Buddhist who has attended a Unitarian church for the past 20 years. My attachment to that church began when I had children, and continued because of social connections. My practice is Buddhist and can co-exist with Unitarian (Unitarian-Universalist) membership. However, I have always felt that Christians were a bit unmoored in the Unitarian church, even though the Unitarian church has its roots in the Judeo-Christian tradition. The UCC church offers the desired mooring in Christianity, and also has a tremendous history of community outreach and social justice, in keeping with its liberal/progressive stands on human rights issues.
  • Mum48 · 1 year ago
Well, that must be confusing! I'm an EX-CATHOLIC!
  • Bob · 1 year ago
The Washington Post is creepy, has been so for a long time. Why even direct traffic to the web site?
  • ChrisS · 1 year ago
My reaction exactly. Who died and made her Katherine Graham? LOL.
  • Your Neighbor Barbara · 1 year ago
If it were up to me, and it isn't, I would like the Obamas to join All Soul's Church on 16th Street near my neighborhood. It is one of the few integrated churches in town, it is Unitarian, and the pastor is a gay man!
  • HarpoSnarx · 1 year ago
Donny Graham, Little Debbie and Sally Quinn - yup librul media.

A little tolerance for Ben Bradley's trophy wife - poor thang can't quite figure out how to be Pamela Harriman hence the malicious trivia as news.

Of course like any septuagenarian Gooper, she dishes it out but doesn't take it. Entitlement y'know.
  • shell · 1 year ago
No. 1 -- what 50-something-year-old woman goes by SALLY? Pathetic.

No. 2 -- Ever hear of Perle Mesta? She was the "Hostess with the Mostest" in the 40s and 50s -- in D.C. When the Kennedys got to office, she was frozen out completely. Let's hope the same thing happens to Sally.
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago
I agree with you totally about Quinn. So she's Queen Quinn of the Beltway, but the rest of the country could give a flying ----. To boot, I think Cokie "Hawaii is too foreign" Roberts is a member of her court.
  • LeftCoastOracle · 1 year ago
The whole lot of them are sanctimonious prigs. This is waaaay too much church talk for me. As far as I'm concerned the Obamas could worship at the alter of the American taxpayer (tyth 10% to us) and it wouldn't hurt my feelings.
  • Sempringham · 1 year ago
What church Obama attended made a lot of difference in Chicago, and it will make a lot of difference in D.C.

If he goes to Washington Cathedral, he will be attending the national cathedral of a church that allows gay bishops and welcomes gay parishioners. This may seem like silliness to you, but to millions of Americans it will be very significant. It will be highly symbolic, set a good example, and send an important message.
  • Your Neighbor Barbara · 1 year ago
I forgot about all that, not being Episcopalian myself. It's just that it might seem too "elitist" and he is a UCC member, after all. Still, it certainly would be a boost to those trying to avoid the schism.
  • JIM O'HARE · 1 year ago
ONE OF THE BEST COLUMNS I EVER READ WAS BY FRANK RICH TEN YEARS AGO ABOUT AN ARTICLE THAT SALLY QUINN WROTE FOR THE WASHINGTON POST. THE ARTICLE IS A CLASSIC AND EVERY TIME I HEAR HER NAME, OR SEE SAM OR COKIE OR BRODER, THIS COLUMN STILL COMES TO MIND. THE COLUMN "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN" FROM NOVEMBER 1998, JUST AFTER THE ELECTION CAN BE FOUND HERE: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=...
  • LeftCoastOracle · 1 year ago
"The median age of Ms. Quinn's insiders is somewhere between Robert Novak and Alice Roosevelt Longworth." This is prime!

Self righteous prigs make me want to vomit.
  • LeftCoastOracle · 1 year ago
Quinn is waaaaay too self involved. She needs to get a life - outside the church.
  • mauro7inf · 1 year ago
Hey, people care about this stuff. Go to a newsstand; count how many magazines they have with celebrity gossip. It's one of the most disgusting things society has come up with. People actually want to know these mundane things, because apparently they have nothing else to care about in their pitiful lives.

For that, I respect Sally Quinn, for making money off of stupid people. They deserve it.
