AMERICAblog: Dear Stanford, If you're going to talk about war, meet your former provost, Condi Rice

Stanford should incorporate aluminum tubes into its insignia.

Ouch! Joe, that's gonna leave a mark! Serve up a great big heapin' helpin' of hypocrisy to those Stanford profs. :)

Edumacation being what it is today, it isn't reasonable to expect the editor of Stanford's alumni magazine to know that Condi was once provost there, equally, it isn't reasonable to expect the alumni to care about details that have nothing to do with the athletic department, and what's more, it isn't fair to think that the author of the article was digging any deeper than a paycheck.

C'mon! In-depth reporting with analytical judgment in an alumni mag? Doubtful!

Idiotic post. Rice has tenure. Those profs speaking out against war probably do as well. And if they do not, there is academic freedom, and there are separate departments, colleges, and institutions within Stanford. They all have different opinions and areas of study, right there in one big, great university.

I'd expect that kind of post from a right-winger.

    Rice has tenure.

I guess that means the war crime of starting the Iraq War is not grounds for terminating her tenure, nor the 1.3 million murdered innocent Iraqi civilians or our unnecessary 4,300 dead/murdered by Bush/Cheney/Rice/Rumsfield. Murder is no longer grounds for termination of tenure.

Guilty by association? C'mon, that's unfair and silly. If that's the case then that's like telling me I should be ashamed of the college I went to because some of my friends happened to be Republicans and/or Conservatives. For that matter, folks from other countries would be telling the U.S. we have no say in anything because George W. Bush was our president.

That is a cheap and weak post.

Methinks you are painting with a brush that is too broad.

As somebody else noted, this post is not up to the usual standards for this blog.

By the way, my colleagues from Stanford indicate that she was a really shitty provost.

she was a really shitty provost.

No surprise! She was a shitty Secretary of State given the reaction of the state department to Hillary's taking over. I always thought Hillary wasn't a very sweet smelling petunia herself, but the difference must be really humungous with Rice being the ultimate universal skunk.

    Joe-
Take a deep breath. You sound like someone who went to USC. FYI:
-Condi was a hugely unpopular and not very successful Provost.
-She didn't help start the war until she moved to Washington.
-Most of the Stanford faculty opposed the war from the beginning.
-Condi is ensconced in her bunker at the Hoover Institution, self-described as "at Stanford but not of Stanford." When she ventures out to talk with students, they ask tough questions.
-The Alumni Magazine is not as bad as most.
    -I write with first-hand knowledge.

Gotta love it - EVERYBODY hates U$C! They oughta make Cheney their Provost.

As opposed to some other commenters, I do not think this is a bad post. In fact, I agree with the sentiment. The other commenters don't seem to understand that this post isn't about calling Stanford a "bad" school. This post doesn't make any sort of value judgement about Stanford; it simply points out the irony in Stanford's new marketing. And I agree. It's pretty disingenous to credit your faculty for the good things they do while simultaneously sweeping their mistakes (within the same field) under the rug.

I mean, what if MIT or CMU came out with a new marketing agenda about promoting peace? That would also be pretty slimey, since both schools receive tons of money for developing weapons (this is a simplification .. obviously).

so, all of Stanford University needs to come out and make some statement ... or something? What exactly do you want?

hey, I'm no defender of Condi, but give me a break with this post.

btw, the Hoover Inst is essentially an autonomous entity housed on the campus

That reminds me: I've read biographies of Condi and articles including her time at Stanford. But I always thought there must be a whole lot more there that hasn't been reported. Condi was a "hugely unpopular and not very successful provost"? Probably true and not surprising, but where's the dirt? Anyone ever come across any serious reporting about her Stanford time?
