Speaking as a heterosexual, I'm truly glad she could live long enough to get married. And sorry that she had to wait so long to do so. My sympathies to her widow.
And I very much hope I can say in November that it's a shame she didn't live to see her basic human rights reaffirmed by the voters of California.

WOW. I'm so sad at hearing that. But how wonderful it was that she lived long enough to get married. Yet another reason for California NOT to invalidate all of those weddings.
Thoughts and prayers with her widow and their family and friends...
Well, at least she finally managed to get legally married.... Twice!
She was first when Gavin granted marriage equality in San Francisco, and first again when the CA Supreme Court legalized it.

I'm sitting here trying to compose myself and type this out. I'm such a big bawling baby.
Hey Del, thanks for a good cry. I'm so proud of you. How honored I am to call you my hero. Thank you.

Scot, don't feel bad. I had to leave my desk for a few minutes to compose myself. My husband and I got married 11 days after Del and Phyllis and we know it was possible, in large part, to them. It's a tremendous loss to all communities.

She died married to the love of her life. An achievement a lot of LGBT are still fighting to get in other states. I'm so happy she lived long enough to do it!

Ditto to all here. I'm so glad they had the chance to marry. Now let's get on with the fight to insure that right for for folks who don't have it yet!

It is killing me to know that Del Martin has died. My heart is broken. I wish John could get someone at the convention to make an announcement??

Gavin made some comments at the DNC LGBT Caucus, but haven't been able to find out anything else. We missed most of the coverage tonight (MAMA MIA Sing Along already planned; we DVR'd the speeches). http://pageoneq.com/news/2008/newson082708.html

A woman of courage and substance. A real feminist. God Bless her.

A gay friend of mine who died of heart disease a year ago once told me how Del Martin's book saved his life when he was young and terrified of this homophobic world. I hope he is able to tell her that himself now. Both Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon will always be MAJOR heroes to me. I am a liitle disappointed there is not a bigger tribute to them here.

Just to let everybody know, the City has lowered every flag to half mast. I can't remember the flag at Harvey Milk plaza ever flying at half mast.
I hope everybody here appreciates all that Del has done for us. If not, stick around.

my 11 year old daughter is just coming to understand that hating people based solely on their sexual orientation is just flat wrong. by using youtube to watch GLBT teens talk about their experiences with their homophobic worlds, she really gets the idea that these kids just want to be accepted for who they are, not how/who they love and to be treated with respect, dignity and to live their lives without fear -- i know that these teens are able to speak out about their own experiences because of people like Ms. Martin & Ms. Lyon, who spoke out when all odds were against them. It's a chance for me to show her real courage, strength and perservance. And while I'm not a 'believing' woman, i do believe that these wonderful ladies were kept on this earth this long to make sure that my daughter has the chance to grow up in a world that is more accepting, more tolerant, and less violent.
May Ms. Martin's sweet soul rest in peace and my thoughts and hugglies go out to her loving and devoted wife, Ms. Lyon.
