Higher taxes is just dandy as long as the rich aren't suffering it.

if you didn't see the president's and vice-president's press conference on labor initiatives, you will find it a breath of fresh air.
includes some satisfying references to the secretive treachery and villainy of bush/cheney.

It certainly wouldn't be the first time Repuglycans raised taxes on the middle class. Republican saint Ronald Wilson Reagan (666) "simplified" taxes in response to all the calls to make the system more fair. He talked about a flat tax where everyone filled out their tax returns on a postcard. But what we got was "tax simplification" in which middle class tax payers lost their credit card interest deductions and most of their medical expenses deductions, so they stopped itemizing and started taking the standard deduction. That was certainly simpler. And more expensive, since their taxes went up. Saint Ronald also started taxing unemployment benefits. Interesting that the GOP is now talking about eliminating the Regan tax on unemployment. Of course, it's just talk.

Rethuglicans: Always trying to lower taxes for the wealthy and socking it to the middle class...as though working people don't create anything. We certainly do--we create the surplus value that they then keep for themselves, adding to their ever expanding and purloined riches. If they can't pay people living wages because they wish to keep all profits for themselves, they can damn well pay appropriate taxes on them instead of paying others to create ways of avoiding them and handing us their responsibility.
Why should the average person pay more taxes than those who simply sit on their asses, manipulating money and raking it in? Even Warren Buffett admitted that his secretary paid more taxes percentage-wise on her salary than he does on his vast fortune and said it was wrong.

TPM has an excellent article that reveals the flaws in the rethuglicans' stimulus package. They used data from one of the Obama economic team members' research projects to show how their hijacked plan would create 6 million jobs, but they forgot to report that the research results are not based on an economy in a recessionary period. Truly an informative read.

Which is why Republicans have done everything they can destroy the pubic education system, discourage reading and publications, and keep Americans as ignorant, illiterate and anti-intellectual as possible. Bush's stupidity was a model for the ideal Republican. Also Sarah Palin.

alternative plan House Republicans unveiled as a more responsible approach
Insanely brazen of the Republicans to claim that they are more fiscally responsible after Bush was the most fiscally irresponsible president ever, to the point of criminality. When Republicans talk about responsibility, oversight and accountability they pretend they are the party that has an exclusive on those virtues when we know that they are worse than opposite, criminal, thieving, lying, embezzling, greedy, self serving and of course, completely unaccountable for their own crimes.

Typical GOP! Never get it right the first time then blame everyone else for the plan.

We need to return to the 70% marginal rate on folks over about $200,000 / year. Every time we have had that type of rate the economy has improved. Every time the rates get cut we get a bubble and bust cycle.
Back to Eisenhower tax rates for all the "winners". They still will be winners but at least the worst of the excesses will be mitigated.
