AMERICAblog: DNC Treasurer defends embattled gay fundraiser as another big-name gay reportedly drops out

  • Teege · 6 months ago
I just called all three offices.

Tammy let me rant a little, and then said that she's issued a statement earlier this morning, and will be making a more public statement this afternoon. I suggested they notify AmericaBlog, and they took the info and said it would be in the contact list.

Congressman Frank's office was kind of a joke. Took the information and moved on.

Congressman Polis' office knew what I was calling about as soon as I said, "I don't live in his district..." and she said, "Is this about the fundraiser?" She took the information, and said he would be making a statement soon.

In each case, I told the phone operator to ask their boss why we should feel proud to have created a climate where openly gay members can serve in Congress, if this is what they'll tolerate.

    Keep up the calls...they're working.

I think president Obama's silence (and the silence of congress) on the whole issue says more than anything anyone could have said. The Democratic party has lost my support. Call me one of them nuts, but I am going to start working on getting 3rd-party members elected to public office. What good is electing Democrats when they are spineless about the torture of human beings, yet adamantly defending laws that classify us as somehow "less". I have had it. No more.
  • HereinDC · 6 months ago
Democrats could fuck up a bowel movement.

    Perfectly stated Vince,
    my thoughts exactly.

An email solicitation from the DNC just showed up in my mailbox. Really bad timing. This is my reply:

I just received an email donation solicitation. All I can say is YOU'VE GOT A LOT OF DAMN NERVE. Pass this along to Kaine and the President: NOT ONE CENT TO YOU PEOPLE until Obama repudiates that DOMA defense brief and acts like the "Fierce Advocate" he claims to be. AND GOOD LUCK WITH THAT BIDEN FUNDRAISER; I hope nobody shows up. What a way to celebrate Stonewall '40. I'm not bending over anymore!
    Respectfully submitted,
  • paulied · 6 months ago
I got an e-mail solicitation from the DNC as well. I replied that, like the DOJ and the Obama administration, I am "preserving scarce resources" and that I will not be contributing again until the President honors his committments to our community and personally apologizes for the content of the DOJ brief.
  • SusieQ · 6 months ago
Oh, now THAT is perfect. Let's all remember: we're "preserving scarce resources." Thanks Paulied.
  • SusieQ · 6 months ago
Your reply is brilliant. "preserving scarce resources." !!!!!!!!

I just did the same thing! Replied and unsubscribed. The next time they can expect to see my money and volunteer time is when I have FULL equal rights.
  • melchore · 6 months ago
I also got that email. Here is my response:

As a gay male that has been told over the years that being gay was wrong, I listened to the "message of hope" that Barack Obama put forth during the campaign. I believed that he was honest with me and the millions of LGBT Americans about his desire to help us have a better future. I guess I was wrong. Yet again, the LGBT population has been thrown under the bus by another Administration. As a researched and (I thought) informed adult, I knew what I would get if a republican was in office; however, I thought it would be different with a Democrat. Again...I was wrong. This administration and the Democratic National Committee have proven that they love LGBT Americans when it comes to volunteering and raising money but don't care about them enough to protect them or fulfill the promises that they have made.

Please do not expect me to do anything to aid this President or this administration until substantive action has been taken on the front of LGBT rights. A message recognizing Pride month is lip service when you equate LGBT people and their relationships to beastiality and incest. When your DOJ states that while we pay taxes, we do not count enough to be fully protected and receive benefits.
  • McLovin · 6 months ago
I received one also, and told them I would no longer support President Obama due to the disgusting brief he allowed to be filed in support of DOMA. They will get no more money from me either. Everyone should call and email the office of the president and their democrat representative to express their outrage at what the Obama administration did. He's given corrupt bankers and crooked CEO's billions of our dollars and then gives us this in return. I'm beyond upset, I'm outraged.
  • SusieQ · 6 months ago

Whats worse? Being called a faggot right to your face? Or being treated nicely and only being called a faggot once you leave the room?

And there's the difference between Republicans and Democrats.

After Clinton I thought I would never trust a politician again. Then Obama came along and audaciously, I leapt at hope.

    What a mistake that was.

Perhaps it would be better to choose the more blatant, less intelligent, more easily manipulated enemy and start voting Republican?

Of course, I'd rather chew off my own foot... but the hypothetical is interesting to ponder.
  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
I sure as hell won't vote for my sworn enemy - Republican Party. I just won't work or donate money to the political party that says they love me but treat our LGBT community like an abuser treats his battered wife.

I'm also tired of some media types trying to pretend Cheney is some kind of gay rights leader because he is know saying sweet things about gay rights and the LGBT community. He (and Mary Cheney) had eight years to do that while he was hiding in his bunker and supporting institutionalized hate in order to get more Republican votes.
  • BryanR · 6 months ago
You could lend support to primary opponents who challenge anti-gay Democratic incumbents in solid blue districts.

Pulling out of partisan politics is the way to oblivion, not power.
  • someone · 6 months ago
Or you could vote for a 3rd party candidate that would actually *do* something to promote equal rights for all. Oh wait, I forgot this is the site I stopped reading during the 2008 election because of the abuse heaped upon us who dared to predict, accurately, exactly what has happened thus far with the Obama administration. We have more war, greater loss of civil liberties, and no progress with regard to civil rights (from the federal government).

But what do I know, after all, I voted for Nader.

Bye for another year my fellow faggots.
  • kkozoriz · 6 months ago
Bill Maher is right. Obama has shown himself to be Bush Lite. Sorry, I no longer believe anything these folks have to say. If they tell me the sky is blue, I'm going to look out of the window to check. Done. Finished. Over

Refusing to release White House visitor logs, allowing indefinite custody without charges, refusing to investigate or prosecute torture. It's like the Bush administration all over again.

    Sickening.

  • Blueflash · 6 months ago
YES. CALL NOW. It matters even if you're not in their district.
  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
I called all three. They are being responsive to this, and taking down information like e-mail addresses. I think they might be sending out an e-mail soon?
  • Scott · 6 months ago
Now THIS is change *I* can believe in! LOL

Just because the democrats aren't as openly antigay as the republicans doesn't mean GLBT people should all huddle under the DNC umbrella.

The dems keep dicking off, and they might piss gays off enough to vote republican just to spite Obama come 2012. How bad do they want to hold onto their power?
  • BryanR · 6 months ago
If the DNC continues to use gay money while abusing the legal status of gays, I submit the following modest corrective: find a credible pro-gay candidate who would be willing to run for the presidency in 2012 as an Independent and get her or him on the ballot in at least OH, VA, FL and NC.

If the Democratic Party under the direction of Obama continues its miserable anti-gay record - Clinton was the worst president for gays in US history - said candidate will run and possibly cost the Democrats the election.

We need leverage, not lip service here - let's organize now and force these cowards to recognize our rights.
  • Seansmith · 6 months ago
    http://pamshouseblend.com/diary/11495/the-gay-d...

Michell Gold still plans on attending, "while advocating our rights." And promoting his book.

    Yeah, right.

Read the comments there. Boycott to ALL, gay or straight, who would rather support and promote themselves than support and promote this community.

Well, I could refuse to buy his furniture, but I can't afford it any way.
  • bbock · 6 months ago
Here's an idea, encourage everyone to give the money they would have given to the DNC to a gay and lesbian center around the country. Not HRC or NGLTF or GLADD but a local organization.
  • BryanR · 6 months ago
Civil rights will come through political power on the national level, not local organizations, however worthy they may be of our support in general.
  • Jersey · 6 months ago
This may be true, but do you want to give your money to a group (Reid isn't even trying to get anyone in the senate to start the ball rolling on DADT) that has done nothing for us? Until they start give your money to support local groups who need it and actually make life better in some way.
  • BryanR · 6 months ago
My point, if you see my comment below, is to threaten the Democratic Party on the national level, thereby forcing legislators to make meaningful concessions, with the repeal of "Don't Ask" as a minimum.
  • JJ · 6 months ago
I would like to encourage everyone to write the DNC and their representatives in DC and let them know you know longer support them until LGBT rights are advanced.

    Thank You!

When you've reached Andy Tobias' level of success, you've got nothing to lose but your own credibility and self-respect.

If he doesn't resign now, he'll end up being a de-facto apologist and enabler for Obama's anti-gay policies.

  • nicho · 6 months ago
Power. Three things motivate people strongly -- sex, money, and power.

Tobias has all the money he needs and is probably doing OK in the sack. So, you're asking him to give up power. That's probably the hardest to give up.
  • kugelschreiber · 6 months ago
Perhaps those who do choose to go could confront Biden publicly?
  • mml34 · 6 months ago
if the brief "doesn't represent the president's views" then the president can sure as hell come out and say as much himself. notice, president obama hasn't said anything about the brief. nothing.

his silence is deafening. his failure to respond in some way to the outcry over the brief means either: 1) it does represent his views on the subject (i.e. gay marriage = incest and pedaphilia) or 2) it's politically expediant to keep quiet on this (i.e. throw the gays under the bus in order to appease the right wingers, wink wink nudge nudge).

i really don't know which alternative is worse. obama is a fraud. the sooner we get through our collective stages of grief (denial, anger, etc.) on this sad fact, the better. let's at least get to the anger stage, people!

BTW, I noticed when I was on the DNC website: Their blog roll prominently features AMERICABlog, so keep it up John, I'm sure they're reading every word.

And in case I don't thank you enough, we all appreciate your leadership on this.
  • Trev · 6 months ago
Fine, then let Obama speak out against the brief. If words are being put in his mouth, he can take them out.

No rights: No $$, no votes.
  • McLovin · 6 months ago
He's not going to speak out and neither are our so called representatives in The Congress, they are all cowards and are now hiding in their offices, and having their secretary's screen their calls. I'm sure they are all hoping that with little media attention and a no comment approach, it will just go away.

Earth to the DNC and the president, it's not just going to go away, and your silence is only fueling more outrage from a class of people who have been discriminated against for too long.
  • FFups · 6 months ago
"Well, if the White House can lift the ban, repeal DOMA, pass ENDA, fire the lawyer who wrote the homophobic brief, and publicly apologize for comparing us to child molesters, by next week, more power to them."

    Love it! :)

Besides: has anyone asked why Obama was sending Biden to this event to begin with, as opposed to showing up himself? Would he send Biden to represent him at NAACP or AIPAC? I thought sending Michelle Obama to the LGBT delegate luncheon during the election campaign was strange and demeaning. Love her - but that speech was just simply ridiculously broad and noncommittal - especially for somebody who otherwise is not shy of telling how it is. I guess now we know why...
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 6 months ago
Biden at the event: "I gotta tell you guys and gals, whadda honor it is to be here tonight. They tell me they had to paper the audience tonight, not because of me and my regular joshing around, but some folks didn't make it as planned because there's a boycott. Boy, that should be a gaycott, haha haha. Stll I love you guys and I gotta tell yas Mr. President really respects ya and all the stuff ya did to get him elected. Now when I was a little guy growing up on the hard streets of Scanton, PA, we hadda a music teacher in my school who was a little light in the loafers, haha, but I gotta tell ya, from the bottom of this Irishman's huge heart, we all loved him like a regular guy, even though he was kinda irregular, haha haha . . . ."

I'd say Andy is between a rock and a hard place. As an officer of the DNC, he really has to stick up for the boss.

On the other hand, it's all part of the DC game. "I'll stick a knife in your back. I'll call you names. And, then we'll all go catch a couple beers and maybe a movie. What do you say?"
  • John Aravosis · 6 months ago
Of course, Andy has to either defend his boss or resign, he can't publicly criticize them.
  • Seansmith · 6 months ago
One would think that if he had any integrity in who he is and pride - dismissing the irony of the month we're in, he would choose to at the least publicly criticize him then let Obama wrongly fire him for calling out his bullshit.

I understand he's your friend John, but let's call a spade a spade...

A House Faggot is a House Faggot.
  • rickwla · 6 months ago
Exactly! Andy Tobias and the guy that heads the Office of Personnel Management are our Uncle Toms.

Tobias can't defend this as not representing Obama's views when one of the lawyers signing the brief is an Obama appointee, Tony West.

Enough of the cognitive dissonance among the straight and gay apologists.
  • Gridlock · 6 months ago
Frankly, every gay in this admin should resign out of protest.

But there'll always be sellouts and turncoats
  • timncguy · 6 months ago
If Andy is so proud of that Pride Proclamation, ask him to explain why the "call to action" that was in it intentionally EXCLUDED the white house from any action. IT called on the community and congress to work together to advance our issues. It should have called on the community and congress to work WITH THE WHITE HOUSE.

But, the White House keeps claiming they can't do anything, congress has to do everything, blah, blah, blah...

i like the new motto no gay rights no gay $$

and to do this fundraiser as the anniversary of stonewall after this briefing and all the silence on gay issues, not to mention the well planned annoucement of the supreme court judge hours prior to the historical vote, is plan ass sick anyone that goes to this should be ashamed.
  • bbock · 6 months ago
    Not one pink penny.
  • David in Arizona · 6 months ago
Absolutely. No Equality - No Money - No Votes. Even the $-bean counters at the DNC fund raiser oughta be able to read these tea leaves.
  • PaulinDC · 6 months ago
You realize, of course, that - having Biden as the headliner - the risk for the DNC and the administration rises exponentially the longer this drags on. Imagine how unpredictably Biden might react to protests outside the venue or, even worse, if confronted with protests inside the fundraiser. Imagine what he might say if he was rudely interrupted and lost his temper. It is to wish for.

While the higher profile gays may have been co-opted and are implicitly under threat of losing their insider status or, worse, their [obviously non-]influential positions, it is entirely feasible that some of the brothers and sisters attending the fundraiser are committing to attend JUST so they can raise a ruckus on the inside.

    Wonder who's covering the event?
  • Blueflash · 6 months ago
John, when I called these three representatives earlier today I neglected to request that they not attend the fundraiser. I just urged them to release statements condemning the DOJ brief. So I called back about the fundraiser. In all three cases I was told by their offices that they weren't sure if they would attend, but this time Frank's office informed me that a statement about the DOJ brief is in the works. By the way, it sounds like they're getting a lot of calls :-)

Everyone should boycott this fund raiser. That brief filed by the Obama administration was disgusting towards the gay community and a complete departure from his message of support for repealing DOMA and DADT, during his campaign. He's just like any other politician, and that's not the change I voted for. President Obama, you're disgusting and I'm sorry I voted for you.
  • nicho · 6 months ago
We need a union to back us. We need some union to throw up a picket line at the hotel. That will force people who want to attend to cross a picket line. I don't think they will do that.

A minor correction to your original post: Tobias' name is misspelled as Tabias, second paragraph after the update.
  • ScottLanter · 6 months ago
Enough with the excuses. We keep being told "Obama has too much on his plate. Gays being fired from their jobs, discharged from the military, and banned from marriage must continue until at least 2012 when Obama had time to consider them."

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!! When we are called pedophiles and beastealists by Obama, no gays at all should go to that fundraising dinner. For once our community needs to grow a pair. Would the Black community have embraced Bush if he compared them to apes?
  • bbock · 6 months ago
The full plate argument was working on me. I was willing to let it go until he had some of the other broader initiatives under way. Health Care is essential to all Americans. But Obama blew it with the DOJ briefing. That crossed the line from benign neglect to hostile actions. DOMA was Bill Clinton's sin and now it's Barack Obama's shame. With that DOJ briefing, Obama now owns DOMA.

I believe there is a back entrance to the Manderian Oriental Hotel ( no pun intended)....... you can see it from up above on the 395 Highway which runs at the back of the hotel.

I was able to send along my thoughts to Obama today too. I told them to remove me from the list as I couldn't, in good conscience support an organization that equated my 8 year relationship (waiting to get married as soon as legal) to incest and pederasty.
  • David in Arizona · 6 months ago
I did the same thing regarding the Obama email. Couldn't send Barney Frank an email but I did send him a fax asking him to withdraw his support for the DNC gayla on June 25th. Of course with a 10,000sf spa and a 5 star Mandarin buffet, I doubt he'll give my fax much credance. Ol' Barney does like his perks.

Over at Pams House Blend, the list of invitees also shows that Suze Orman would not be able to attend, but sent in a donation. Presumably because the invites and that email from Tobias had come out in May before the brief was filed.

I wonder if we can get people like Suze Orman to as for their money back now?
