AMERICAblog: Do Catholics really want Hillary deciding what their priests can say on the pulpit?

Hmm -- where was this argument when Hillary Clinton mentioned RFK? Where was it when Geraldine Ferraro or Bill Shaheen were condemned? Seems to me that the shorter version is that anyone can say anything about Hillary Clinton, but only fawning, adoring comments about Obama are authorized.
John Aravosis
Yeah didn't hear an apology to Obama over the assassination comments. Not to mention, why is this horrible excuse for a human being AGAIN trying to take down our nominee, when she knows she can't win? Because she wants Obama to lose in November.
1stRepublic14thStar
There was nothing to apologize for.
Hillary Clinton didn't direct her RFK comments to Obama and they weren't about him. She was asked why she was staying in the race despite calls to concede. She said that on several occasions the nomination hadn't been decided until June, and she didn't see why she should concede in May when there were still primaries to be held. She cited as examples 1992 and 1968. Period. End of story. She did not suggest that Obama would be assassinated, she did not advocate that Obama be assassinated and she didn't tie the RFK reference to Obama. it's Obama supporters and their media enablers who made the leap to suggesting that Hillary wants Obama murdered, or Hillary plans to murder Obama, etc.
John Aravosis

Try that excuse when you bring up hijackings in the line at airport security, then get back to me.
1stRepublic14thStar

That makes no sense.
If Hillary Clinton had been asked about death threats to public figures, and in response she brought up Obama and assassination, then your comparison would be apt. But that's not the case. The context of the question and answer were clear and they had nothing to do with Obama.
The furor over the RFK remark is exactly like what was done to John Kerry in 2006. There's no question that he meant to attack George W. Bush, but the administration, partisan Republicans, and their media enablers falsely claimed that Kerry had been attacking US service members. Kerry and the Democrats folded like cardboard suitcases and Kerry disappeared from the campaign trail.
Given the venue and the audience, the remarks that preceded Kerry's "you end up in Iraq" punchline, and everything that he said afterwards, it's clear that he was not saying anything about US Service members -- he was laying Bush's shortcomings and their consequences at Bush's doorstep.
John Aravosis

You don't fucking bring up the word assassination when you're running for president unless you're either a complete asshole or a complete tone-deaf idiot. It is the same thing. Any fucking moron knows that death-talk is off-limits. We wouldn't even print the fucking story because we couldn't believer her quote was real. You don't mention assassinations, PERIOD.
I'm sorry, you don't know politics if you don't understand how off-limits this kind of language is. I've been working in this town for 20 years, as has Hillary. She knows damn well about not using these words, and she did anyway.

Does this rule mean that you're also outraged at Jesse Jackson Jr. comparing Obama and Clinton to OJ and Nicole Simpson, at a woman asking John McCain of Clinton "how do we beat the bitch?", at Keith Olbermann suggesting that the way to deal with Clinton was to have her and a super delegate enter a room together with only one emerging, at Obama giving Clinton "the finger"? Or does this rule only apply to comments about one candidate?

In addition, Father Pfleger made remarks in which he advocated killing gun store owners and Illinois state legislators. Does he earn your condemnation, too?

Despite your most earnest wish that she didnt suggest that, she did. When asked why she was staying in the race, in her own words, she quoted an assassination that took place. She didnt mean he should be killed, and it doesnt matter. It was horrible tact, poorly chosen words, and a comment from a bitter sore loser.
1stRepublic14thStar
The point was not that RFK was assassinated. The point was that the 1968 nomination had not been decided in June. The question and answer make the context clear.
Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., a main Obama supporter, compared Obama attempting to figure out how to campaign against Hillary Clinton to OJ Simpson's murder of his ex-wife. No one, to my knowledge, suggested that Jackson meant that Clinton should be killed by an angry black man. Why am I supposed to let Jackson off the hook while you ascribe malice to Clinton over her RFK remark?

Father Pflegler is an outstanding priest and can withstand anything the Clintons dish at him. This man has confronted drug dealers and demanded they get out of the neighborhoods near his church. He has paid prostitutes $50 for an hour of their time to tell them they can have a better life and they are loved. He has helped 100s of women improve their lives by getting them off the street. He has often said that he gets more support from around the country than his own archdiocise. I know he apologized for the sermon, but this amazing priest has dealt with worse people than the Clintons or Fox News.

So Joan Walsh was outraged -- OUTRAGED I tell you -- that the Obama camp was using "assassination gate". Just outraged. Lest we forget, who said the line about assassination? Why Hillary herself. For which she still has not apologized for raising the spectre of assassination in any connection with her opponent. "Why should she?", said the sanctimonious Terry McAuliffe.
And here we are, Hillary being OUTRAGED at this priest who drew attention to her sense of entitlement. Did Obama say it? No. Was Obama there? No.
The gall of her is absolutely breathtaking. To personally make hay out of what this priest said, only days after she refused to apologize to Barack Obama his wife and young daughters for WHAT SHE SAID.

This is a desperate attempt by Faux News and the right wingers, to attack Obama. By the way, no one has mentioned the fact that Hillary gave a great performance imitating Obama, and mocking him, when they show this video of this priest mocking Hillary. As for the right wingers, It must be pathetic to have to support McCain, who already has the reputation of carrying on a third term, and because of Bush, gives them nothing to run on, no accomplishments, only failure.

My wife and i were just talking and she basically said the same thing John. The issue of abortion in this country which is so old testament but this feminist group who think that it is their right to have the first woman to run elected even if the people havent voted for her are going to lose the right to control over their bodies and lose it because they have lost sight of one of the major unspoken issues of the election and that is to appoint some liberal judges to balance the supreme court. Hillary does a remarkable job of feeling the pain of the white blue collar worker, the need to prevent the burning of a flag, defending her cheating husband and signing to invade Iraq and then Iran. She is nothing if not a master at snatching at any straw left in the pile to find a way to claw her way out of a poorly run campaign where she has been surrounded by Bill's old buddies who want another chance at the pot of gold and trusting her entire campaign to a lobbyist named Penn paying him over $10 million. I want to believe that when she has to walk away she will retain her enthusiasm for the feminist movement and not throw them under the bus too because it did not work out the way the tarot cards said it would

First of all, I fail to see how this is Obama's fault.
Second of all, as much good work as this priest has done, I think he made a big mistake. He may even have endangered Trinity's tax-exempt status by appearing to endorse a candidate (although since he was a guest preacher I'm not sure how the rules would be applied.)
And as angry as I've been with Hillary these days, I don't believe that kind of cruel mocking of an individual belongs in a church pulpit.
Anyway, I hope this blows over. As I said, it's not Obama's fault. He doesn't deserve this headache.

What the priest said is very accurate. Hillary has played the gender card ad-nauseum and the race card often. What about her "hard working, white americans " vote for me crap. These are the words that came out of her own mouth. The priest was correct in pointing out her sense of entitlement. But the funny thing is how is Obama to blame for what some other person says. This is really getting ridiculous.

There is nothing wrong in what the priest said. Hillary has personally said a lot more awful things. Why is it when some supporter of Obama criticizes Hillary her supporters spew the most extreme diatribes. Hillary was the one who said that hard working whilte people voted for her, her husband compared Obama's candidacy to Jesse Jackson to marginalize him, Hillary said he is not a Muslim "as far as I know". This woman is a lying, manipulative person with a sense of entitlement and when someone has the guts to hold a mirror up to her her supporters get mighty annoyed. Go figure.

Crazy4Obama -- some people cheered. Keep in mind this is a megachurch with 6,000-10,000 members. And although I've never visited, I get the feeling the worship is high-energy enough that it doesn't take much to elicit cheers.
I'm sure some -- maybe many -- in the congregation were offended. Get that many UCC'ers together, and I guarantee they won't all agree about which Democratic candidate to support, so I'm sure there were some Hillary supporters in the crowd. As well as undoubtedly some Obama supporters who felt the priest crossed the line. (And others who were probably just thinking -- "thanks a lot buddy, just when we'd finally gotten ourselves out of the news!") But booing in church is probably just not done, so those who were offended would most likely have remained quiet.

You're not going to print "the details of this story" or even link to an account of it, because you are spinning it with your out-of-control hysteria, John. I hope readers will actually bother to look up the story and see Obama's own take on it.
I have just about lost complete respect for this blog. I'm an Obama supporter and I'm frustrated with Hillary, but this blog has turned into a shrill, predictable, relentless attack that makes Fox pundits seem indeed fair and balanced. I get all of John's posts explaining his outrage at the Clinton machine's actions. Yet I'm still disgusted by this freak of a priest. I do get what lauracf is saying about only being able to judge part of the audience reaction. And on watching the video again do think there is one person in it waiving his hands at the freak to motion "no." But on the extended clips he's also getting thanked at the end for his words. And I'm just left disgusted. I probably should disclose that I don't go to church except when my spouse asks me, and he knows better than to try that more than once every three months or so, so can only comment as an outsider. But as noted below my spouse goes to a UCC church and I can't imagine the congregation not walking out if this guy took the pulpit and spouted his crap. (For the record, I liked rev. Wright.) And I would feel better about Obama if he quitely moved to another UCC congregation.

The pulpit has been used as a weapon of hate since its inception. The clergy have bashed honest gay people forever and no one bats an eye. Where's my TV spot and 15 minutes of fame? I've been saying that Hillary has had an attitude of entitlement for months now. How come I'm not shown on TV all day long by idiot pundits and commentators trying to manufacture another non-scandal? Funny how the preist didn't make any mention of politcal assassination, unlike others we all know and love. It was hilarious how the traditional media tried to help Hillary get off the hook with her outrageous comments yet will try to keep this one going forever because they don't have some missing woman or Britney rehab to report on. And when are they going to start reporting on that nutjob preacher that Hillary adores, and their "prayer breakfasts", where Hillary cozies up with the most despicable RW Republicans imaginable? I think it's about time Obama really goes after her. He has been too nice for too long. She will try to play the victim once more, using whatever she can lay her hands on to fling at Obama while crying how she is treated unfairly. Well, boo-fucking-hoo, Empress Clinton. Obama could make you squirm til the GE by constantly harping on your disgusting RFK statements and all the other negative bullshit you have used against a fellow Democratic candidate. How about if he mentioned the fact that you were in the White House while your spouse was getting a blowjob from an intern, and then you went out and defended your cheating, lying, sleazy, Republican-lite husband against the "vast RW conspiracy" - although now I suppose it is the "vast LW conspiracy" that is trying to bring you down? And now you have the nerve to say that you have to stay in the race to speak for the women who support you? Hillary Clinton would throw every woman in this country under the proverbial bus to get the nomination. I may be wrong, but I don't recall Obama saying, early in the primary campaign, that he would be the eventual nominee and he would have the nomination wrapped up by February the way that Clinton did. Sure sounds like Clinton has a sense of entitlemnent to me.

I live in Chicago. If you're any kind of progressive, you know Fr. Pflegler. He has reached across racial lines and helped many, many lives. This is a Catholic priest in the social justice tradition of the Catholic Church, which has gotten lost over the last 30 years.
So let me get this straight: Obama was supposed to know, 20 years ago, that Fr. Pflegler would say something nasty about Hillary Clinton in 2008. That stupid Obama -- what was he thinking?
Every time she pulls a stunt like this, someone needs to link to Sidney Blumenthal's daily emails on behalf of the Hillary campaign, linking to every hateful, nutjub right wing website. Every single day.
And really -- after bringing up assassination, and still not apologizing to the Obama family -- out of her own mouth? Obama is responsible for something this priest said?

Here is something interesting about this so called RESPECTED Rev. Michael Pfleger that just might have one wonder how ANYBODY can respect his actions. My personal opinion is that this guy is offside and a few short of a full deck but then again I'm not a professional shrink. We each have our own yardstick of what smells bad I suppose.
During an address at an anti-gun rally in front of Chuck's, Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor of St. Sabina's Church, exhorted the crowd to "drag" shop owner, John Riggio, from his shop "like a rat" and "snuff" him. Rev. Pfleger went on to tell the crowd that legislators that vote against gun control legislation should be "snuffed" as well. As many know, "snuff" is slang for especially violent murder. http://armedandsafe.blogspot.com/2007/05/i-knew...

Looks like Obama tossed Pflegler under the bus already, as his testimonial for Obama is now missing from Obama's website. A CHACHE version is available below.
A Barack Obama delegate to the Democratic National Convention was "ticketed for calling her neighbor's African-American children 'monkeys,' " reports the Chicago Sun-Times. (We didn't realize this was against the law, but the Chicago Tribune explains that the charge was disorderly conduct.) Here is what happened, according to the Sun-Times:
[Linda] Ramirez-Sliwinski "came outside and told the children to quit playing in the tree like monkeys. The tree was not on Ramirez-Sliwinski's property," Carpentersville Police Commander Michael Kilbourne said.
Ramirez-Sliwinski admitted she used the word "monkeys," but said she did not intend racism. She said she was only trying to protect them from falling out of the tree.
"Linda Ramirez-Sliwinski said she saw the kids playing in the tree and didn't want them falling out of the tree and getting hurt. She said she calls her own grandchildren 'monkeys,' " Kilbourne said. The mother of one of the children did not see it that way, noting she and Ramirez-Sliwinski have clashed before.
"She felt it was racist because of the fact the children were African-American," Kilbourne said.
Told of the incident Monday by the Sun-Times, Obama's campaign called Ramirez-Sliwinski and persuaded her to step aside as a delegate because the campaign felt her remarks were "divisive and unacceptable."
Finally, someone Barack Obama can disown! Let this be a lesson for other Obama delegates: If someone is bothering you, shout at the top of your lungs, "God damn America!" You know Obama will stand by you then. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120767493480598...

Thanks to another of Obama's friends ,FOX and the GOP will have more video clips to add to their roster. I suppose this is |HIllary's fault also, of course it is, she picked Obama's friends.

$$$ That is despicable, traitorous, undemocratic behavior, and honestly neither of them nor any of their staff should work in this town again after what they're doing. $$$
Perfect logic, banish the target of hate and uphold the one brandishing the hate. I will learn yet, of the right way.
$$$ One more thing. He's a respected liberal activist. $$$
Actually the opposite can be said, he is hardly main stream and not hugged too close by mainstream, even by others in other ministries. Hitler was respected by his subordinates, does that make him respected, eyes of the beholder.
$$$ She's attacking one of our own for her own political gain. $$$
So defending oneself by hate speech is attacking, I fail to follow that logic.
$$$ She cares about nothing other than her own pathetic ego.$$$
It's a given that all political folks have an ego, your adjective insertion of "pathetic" is added for??? On the down and low : That can be said about Obama and 1996 , ie, removing his competition from even getting on the ballot. Want to discuss that sometime, great fodder for "ego" dimensions, without adjectives of course.

I'm sorry, you don't know politics if you don't understand how off-limits this kind of language is. I've been working in this town for 20 years, as has Hillary. She knows damn well about not using these words, and she did anyway.
Bubba's first primary was the third week of February; and RFKs was in May.
She's been in contests since the beginning of January.
John, research the Bilderberg Group. A loathsome assortment of the world elite of whom Bill and Hill have been frequent guests. Some other notable regulars include Henry Kissinger, Tony Blair, Paul Wolfowitz, and many other US and European heads of state and Corp CEO's. Once you realize what these guys are up to and how the Clinton's fit in the plan, the rest of this insanity and willingness to trash the Dem party to regain power makes sense.
This woman is seriously desturbed. I mean it. She's sick.
Abrams' dad defended Judy Miller, and that bad apple didn't fall far from the tree. He's should go back to Court TV.
But, here's a whopper..... WWII vets smackdown chickenhawk bloggers over Obama's uncle's service.

or is she really just batsh*t insane?
Or she's batsh*t insane.
Is that possible?
And here we are, Hillary being OUTRAGED at this priest who drew attention to her sense of entitlement. Did Obama say it? No. Was Obama there? No.
The gall of her is absolutely breathtaking. To personally make hay out of what this priest said, only days after she refused to apologize to Barack Obama his wife and young daughters for WHAT SHE SAID.
They've got balls. I give it to those Clintons. Absolutely no moral compass of any kind.
How I ever defended them........
I'm SICK TO DEATH of hearing how some "man of the cloth" said this or that about a candidate. I could care LESS what they say about ANY candidate. I'll use my God given judgment to decide we are ready for change, and VOTE FOR OBAMA! in the general election.
What next, "if you don't switch your loyalities to me you are not a good catholic?!" " I know what's best for this country and your church and ya know, uh, I'm vetted, and I've uh, been under sniper fire, and I uh, came down to Puerto Rico because uh, we Clinton's are friends of the Puerto Rican people, uh, Bill really helped you when that hurricane hit you and did so much damage, and uh, that's why you should vote for me!!"
Oh, that's right, this has already happened. ( except taking over the church but just give her time, I'm sure she's thinks she's vetted for that job as well.) snark . . .
One more thing. He's a respected liberal activist. She's attacking one of our own for her own political gain. She cares about nothing other than her own pathetic ego.
This is a desperate attempt by Faux News and the right wingers, to attack Obama. By the way, no one has mentioned the fact that Hillary gave a great performance imitating Obama, and mocking him, when they show this video of this priest mocking Hillary. As for the right wingers, It must be pathetic to have to support McCain, who already has the reputation of carrying on a third term, and because of Bush, gives them nothing to run on, no accomplishments, only failure.
nail.head.

Man....
You know, pretty much the truth.....
Hillary dare not say anything - she used the word assassination, and she also mocked Obama, as she looked up at the sky.
Most of them are too old to get pregnant anyway.
(I'm not being snarky. I really do wonder that.)
I have just about lost complete respect for this blog. I'm an Obama supporter and I'm frustrated with Hillary, but this blog has turned into a shrill, predictable, relentless attack that makes Fox pundits seem indeed fair and balanced. It'll all be over in a week or two, John, whether or not you continue stomping your feet and holding your breath.
When your "spin" gets to the point of outright misrepresentation, you need to seriously take a step back.
Hillary freaked because she did feel entitled.
Let's be clear: this is no Jeremiah Wright here. And that she jumped on it shows she has no moral compass of any kind.
Hillary's barking up the wrong tree.
Ohio who spewed epithets and insults against Obama and his supporters?
Hillary took the stage after his introduction and never apologized for
someone speaking on behalf of her campaign.
"Shuck and jive" from Andrew Cuomo. Did Hillary apologize for that?
Spectre of drug dealing from Bob Kerrey and Bob Johnson, as surrogates for
the Hillary campaign. I don't see Hillary renouncing their statements.
Ted Strickland calling Obama a pansy. Did Hillary renounce that, after
standing next to him when he said it?
This is manufactured b.s. and you know it.

Here is the link to Rev. Michael Pfleger actually saying about John Riggio "we’re going to find you and snuff you out".

WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
SURE SOUNDS DIVISIVE TO ME.
Outside the Catholic Church, Rev. Pfleger is known for climbing ladders to deface liquor billboards.
WHAT A CLASS ACT, WELL RESPECTED I'M SURE.

So Hillary should say nothing and have another TAX EXEMPT minister spew more hate, sure, that makes sense.
$$$ Let FOX News and the Republicans foam at the mouth. $$$
Thanks to another of Obama's friends ,FOX and the GOP will have more video clips to add to their roster. I suppose this is |HIllary's fault also, of course it is, she picked Obama's friends.
$$$ Obama already criticized what the priest said, but Hillary and Woflson had to pile on, and hurt Obama more, even though they've already lost. $$$
You are so right again, Hillary had no right at all to speak against the hate sent her way via Obama's friend, how dare she.
