Disaster Debaster ... ABC, the new SNL except that ABC is not that funny.

ABC, the new SNL except that ABC is not that funny.

Actually, what we know as Saturday Night Live was originally called NBC's Saturday Night and ran opposite of an ABC show called Saturday Night Live.

ABC's Saturday Night Live featured such acts as Howard Cosell and Barbara Walters singing a duet.

    Not much has changed.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
hahahahahhahahahaha! That is a joke right? I mean how can you answer that after watching the "debate" on ABC
  • Polly_Tics · 1 year ago
I just made a donation to Obama's campaign (again). I certainly do hope his donations go way up this evening, it's evident that he needs our help now more than ever!

It's obvious that the "powers that be" are definitely afraid of this man getting power. I guess Obama's latest pledge to make sure he will hold the current administration's feet to the fire IF he gets into office reached it's target.

Get ready kids, the going is really going to get tough now...

The question about Wright being as patriotic as Obama was DUMB.
Listening to the questions the first 45 minutes, one could think that
this was Faux News attacking a democratic candidate.
George and Charlie, are two unprofessional moderators.

Wow, I'm only catching up now to the debate - had a bit of a computer malfunction that Apple then screwed up at their Clarendon, VA store (not nice people there - much nicer people at the Pentagon City store, though my keyboard is a still a bit messed up even after visiting them, funny how it works until you home, anyway....)... just catching up now. Wow. Some major hate going on for Gibson and George. They're rebroadcasting it on their ABC News NOW site later tonight and tomorrow, will catch the first half then.

I do think if the lapel pin is going to continue to be an issue, I think the Democratic candidates need to take my advice and start wearing "U.S. Constitution" lapel pins. The message should be Democrats don't worship a flag, sure we respect the flag but we FOLLOW and GLORIFY our constitution!

I have no idea. It was not a good night for Obama. But it may turn out worse for those out to get him. The online polls show Obama winning, for what they're worth.

The bias of George and Charlie against Obama was so blatant one could reasonably suspect this "debate" was coordinated between ABC and the Hillary campaign. Whether true or not, she was definitely ready to drive the knife deeper at every opportunity. One can only hope that it backfires and, tonight at least, it looks like it did.

Clinton Employs Broad Attacks in a Key Debate

PHILADELPHIA — Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton went on the attack against Senator Barack Obama on a variety of issues during a contentious debate Wednesday, warning that he would be deeply vulnerable in a general-election fight if he won the nomination.

.......Mr. McCain has already picked up many of Mrs. Clinton’s accusations against Mr. Obama and used them in his speeches and advertising.

Not to be too technical but among the other oddities of the ABC production, I was struck by the number of Chelsea cut-aways (a picture of something inserted in a soundbite as Wes Clark was inserted when HRC mentioned him)…
All throughout the 90 minutes there was cut-away after cut-away of Chelsea…even, early on, a cut-away of Chelsea when Senator Obama was speaking…But, I noticed no cut-aways of Michelle Obama, the girls or any Obama backers…very odd.
Also Ms Clinton’s been lookin a little saggy and wrinkled these last few weeks but not tonight…Why the girl was as tight as a trampoline…I hear she alternates a boilermaker with a Botox injection and an occasional shotgun blast..
  • DastiusKrazitauc · 1 year ago
"Not to be too technical but among the other oddities of the ABC production, I was struck by the number of Chelsea cut-aways "

I noticed the entire audience was lit in a cold, dim sickly green, but Chelsea had a bright, warm, rosy light on her. Whoever produced it was aiming to drain it of any passion, with that cold blue-green light on people sitting with dour looks and crossed arms, having been admonished not to applaud. I've never seen such bizarre lighting on debate audience members before.

I think Obama did great under the circumstances, because he had to walk a very fine line. I think Obama did extremely well under the circumstances. On the other hand, I think he's being tested because they know he's going to be the nominee.
  • LunaStick · 1 year ago
I'm gonna say this again because it bears repeating. Given all the anger out there regarding this debate, tonight has benifitted Obama like nothing else could. hillary can't act like the victim anymore and Obama handled things well. It may not turn the tide in PA but it ought to keep the margins close. Close enough to make it almost impossible for hillary to keep justifying her staying in the race.

Obama was his usual cool and unflappable against a relentless 3-pronged "gotcha" attack.
HRC was, as usual, preachy and screechy...Her rambling answer to the "would Obama make a good president" question turned the also-ran 1st Lady into Lady MacBeth, again, with her hilarious concluding "yes, yes, yes"...
Also curious why HRC was alloted rebuttal time during the radical pastor/arab acquaintence segment that was really more of an obvious pile-on.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
but Chelsea had a bright, warm, rosy light on her.

the computers "were unavailable" probably meaning they crashed

    Either

    - so many people are unhappy with this that they crashed the server or

So speaking of patriotism, why weren't Stephanopoulos and Charlie wearing their lapel pins?
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
The Fourth Estate has lost all credibility. I think tonight might have been a tipping point for a lot of us. It was such an obvious badly executed hit job by Stephanapolous and Gibson. I'd love to find out what the major motivation for their actions were tonight? Was it Disney telling them to try to help sink the candidates? Was it their disdain for populism since Americans are becoming painfully aware most "media types" represent the establishment, or was it a combination of all the above? Whatever the reason, the mask slipped a little tonight and many American voters who watched this travesty are GETTING VERY BITTER!

This is something that needs more than just a protest - ABC has been gradually becoming more and more obvious a Republican shill site - and the stations they own and the affiliates airing their news are only allowed on the public airwaves by regulation. Those licenses come up for various stations each year and someone needs to find out when they are coming up again - and file massive complaints with a laundry list of reasons why ABC News is not serving the American public.

The American people are increasingly fed up with the media choosing our candidates, manufacturing "controversies" and pandering to political sides in order to create ratings and advertising dollars for themselves. This is why the Democratic candidates avoided Fox News debates. They didn't want to get bogged down with gotcha nonsense. But ABC pulled through for the Fox audience and Hannity, didn't they?

I've lost all respect for Charles Gibson. I can't believe he conducted such a trash debate. It's not so much that I'm annoyed with how they relentlessly took it to Obama, but it's that they believe that the American people and the Democrats of Pennsylvania were best served by the questions that they asked.

That was the worst debate I've ever seen. ABC did America a disservice.

A few observations on all of this:

    - Obama is responsible for his own performance, regardless of how much the deck was stacked against him. It wasn't his best outing, but it wasn't terrible either. But you know, being president isn't about having softballs pitched gently to you all the time, you have to be ready to handle serious adversity. So even though this debate was clearly unfair (and really poor AS a debate), it's still a reasonable way for people to assess Obama as a potential president. He still doesn't come off too badly in the end, aside perhaps from voters who think flag lapel pins are truly a serious, burning issue.

    - Obama will get much worse treatment in the general election campaign, and it's likely that at least one of the debates between him and McCain will also be at least as biased as this one.

    - All the experts have suggested that Clinton's only chance now is to go so negative on Obama that she damages him enough to make him appear unelectable, and she needs to do that while at the same time racking up enough wins in the remaining primaries to stay a reasonable second choice for the superdelegates. And as long as enough superdelegates stay uncommitted, this strategy still gives her a shot. So she is doing exactly what she needs to do, although her chances are highly unlikely and it's a REALLY tough tightrope to walk -- being negative enough to damage Obama while not going so negative that she turns off voters in upcoming primary states. If the positions were reversed I doubt most Obama supporters would be urging Obama to give up for "the good of the party", so I don't actually blame her for this, it's all part of the package for any politician.

    - Unless and until the remaining unpledged superdelegates grow some cojones and actually declare one way or the other, the race truly is still up in the air. Clinton is getting enough signals from enough people that she still has a chance, and so she thinks it makes sense for her to keep going. So in many ways I blame the uncommitted superdelegates more than anyone else for letting this drag on.

    - Either of them, Clinton or Obama, will be a far better choice than McCain, who should be the true target of everyone moderate, liberal, or progressive.

    LATEST POLL NUMBER

    Question:

"Who has the better chance of getting elected president in November"

    Answer:

    Obama: 62%
    Clinton: 31%

    Washington Post ABC News Poll

Actually, Obama continues to poll better than Clinton in the general election match up against McCain.
You, Hillary fans, can shout "can't win" all you like, but it doesn't make it true. Clearly millions of people disagree with you.
Unfortunately for you - THE GAME IS OVER MY FRIENDS!!

Stephanopolous and Gibson are such amateurs -- with an axe to grind. This debate was unnecessary. The questions were decidedly harsh and slanted. Where's Hillary's flag pin, by the way? And Chelsea Clinton is still as ugly as her mama. You know what else, I don't give a fig about Pennsylvannia. They can all rot in hell.

Shales' "competitant" cable's chiming in saying essentialy "ABC sucked" but what about Rev Wright and, no matter the 50+ minute slanted question knife fight, Tweety sez "Obama lost".
Tweety also trying to push HRC as "one of us"...By "us" I'm guessing he means pundits.
Also, aside from Robin Wright, just how many black on-air presenters does ABC Nooz employ?
No fair counting high yeller Barbara Walters...

About what one would expect from an election that has fake candidates to provide a fake choice to a fake democracy. Now complete with fake media, fake wars, fake money, fake religion, fake bloody everything.

A result of the gamed fakery we witnessed last evening (and really every day on the corrupt corporate media) is the generalized ennui evidenced in the paulbe comment...After being played for a fool don't end up a patsy.

OMG, Obama was asked some tough questions!
    Waaahhhhh!!!
If you think that was tough, wait until he has to face the Repubs.
He better grow a pair, and so should all of you.

too bad Charlie kind of seemed like a legitimate TV newscaster. He has stood lock step just like the whole embedded unbiased news media HA! with the LIES of the Bush administration. His Precious grandson will probably be serving and dying for McCain's HUNDRED year war. Karma Charlie? the blood of our murdered soldiers and all the murdered Iraqis will never come off your hands. You and the whole Fourth Estate are culpable in Bush's War Crimes

Yes, most of it was ridiculous fluff, but that it was a full-on hitjob is the real story.

I noticed the repeated cutaways to Chelsea, too, and that Hillary looked "crisp" tonight.

    More than "fishy"....

    sittenpretty,

No, a word like class will never be used to describe Hillary.

It's been interesting checking out every blog and website slamming this so called "debate". Add Huffpo to your list. Hell, Slog's liveblog module thingy went into meltdown mode.

Edit/correction: I see you added Huffpo.

    "Fishy" is an understatement, Prezz.

I don't watch tv news, so I was unaware that Gibson is a pompous, self-aggrandizing ass. Or maybe this was unusual behavior for him?

I really liked the Calitics post made about 7:45 PDT: Word from the Future: ABC News Destroys All Credibility
  • mirth · 1 year ago
    Coming Undone,

Trying to force Obama away from his cool seemed obvious. Several times I wished for him to be more forceful, but y'know what? The man knows what he is doing.
  • mirth · 1 year ago
I noticed that Wes Clark is still hanging in with the Clinton campaign.

Another person's credibility shown to be myth.

JA, thanks for the roundup. I bet there will be a bunch more tomorrow, but this is a great beginning.

    Fozzie,
Thank you for the Will Bunch post link. Wow! Don't miss it people. He expresses perfectly what we all feel about the ABC hitjob tonight. His post should be linked everywhere.

Turn off ABC and let them and the sponsors of their shows know you are doing it.

Finally, thanks to all the great comments here tonight. I mean this. You helped me get through it.
