AMERICAblog: Does anyone really think Obama doesn't love America?

• CDS2 · 1 year ago
PS...to shanobama..

I don't think his position on the Rev is correct. He will need to take that bit quite a bit further to overcome that problem in the General.
• shanobama · 1 year ago
Well, the first book, "Dreams From My father", explores black attitudes in this country and others. He discusses the various groups, the generational attitudes, how this has evolved over time. If you want to understand the Rev, Wright subject in any meaningful way you would have to read this book. Sorry, but race in America is a complex issue and could never be explained by a sound bite.

Go to Obamas web site and watch his speech on Iraq and National Security he gave in Fayetteville. This is by far a better speech than the race/religion speech. It explains his tactical changes, why they are needed, how a number of different actions are needed to enact change-not simply one or two things.

There are films on his web site that go into specifics on health care and other issues, how he will use a number of different measures to change the way business is done in Washington that will be a turn in the right direction to reclaiming our Democracy.

Trying to shorten his approach to change is hard, because he has a number of different small changes that will enact change in the way people work in DC. I had to read a lot of his work to understand this myself. From reducing the influence of lobbyists, to televising Congress when they discuss health care, to getting the electorate more involved on policy issues. His idea of change is not one monolithic piece, but a concert of changes in different areas that all together will mean a positive direction for America.

Restore habeas corpus and close Gitmo, yes, he does go into specifics...I would expect nothing less from a man who taught Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago, one of the most conservative law schools in the country.

From my perspective: We don;t know much about Obama, and this run up to the nomination is his way of telling us about himself. We do know that he refuses to wear an American Flag on his lapel. He has in the past, not placed his hand over his heart when the National Anthem was played. And, he has had a 20 year relationship with a man who obviously does not love America....his pastor. Today, I don't think Obama loves America. Lot's of folks on this blog don't love America today. Seems to me that Obama and some of the folks here, want to change America before they will love America.
• Rab · 1 year ago
Once he gets that lapel pin he's all set. Oh, don't use the "we" as much, not many agree with "you".
• CDS2 · 1 year ago
Just about 50% of us are 'we'.
• Tom3 · 1 year ago
Obama loves America, he just hates what the Fascist Repukes have done to it.

Obama is the only candidate who can fix America.

McCain is 4 more years of the same.

Hillary is a corporate whore.

Obama is the only one who can fix the US.

Why is someone who wants to exhaust every possible option BEFORE accepting that war is necessary considered LESS PATRIOTIC that someone who wants to go to war BEFORE exhausting every other possible option? There is nothing patriotic about killing and being killed. There is ONLY the tragedy of the unimaginable loss and suffering those who must fight the war experience.......PERSONALLY! WAR IS PERSONAL! If you don't understand that, you've never personally participated in a life or death struggle for survival. War is only impersonal to those who send others to fight it.

Why are we even talking about this?

As they say on the blogs -- please don't feed the trolls.
• Cervantes · 1 year ago
Don't give it credence and maybe it will finally go away. Good rule of thumb. If you think it's absurd...it probably is.

Oh yeah? That's what John Kerry thought about the Swift Boaters. You'd sure think it was true, wouldn't you? But it isn't -- the level of depravity of our politics is beyond exaggeration, and it keeps fooling liberals who think they can float above it. No they can't -- least of all Barack Obama.

• vkobaya · 1 year ago
No question about it. He hates America. Yep! Bush hates this nation and is an enemy of America. Bush calls the the Constitution that damn piece of paper. What is more core America than the Constitution.

Oh, oh, Obama? Don't be absurd. O course he loves this nation. He's not Bush is he? Unlike Bush he is a good patriotic American who loves his country and will serve with honor as our president. Mention honor to Bush and he falls on ground in uncontrolled laughter until they tranquilize him and take him away to keep him out of sight until he is back under control.

Clearly cable nooz is still stuck all the way back in the Willy Thornton era of old-style middle and lower class dividing politics...Watching a mass medium die is not a pretty sight. What does it say about all of us that we have boobs such as the conflicted, sorry lot now populating pundit land representing our collective mass cultural intellect?

I believe Obama is going to get the nomination and be opposite McCain. As the article says those that believe this latest character assassination are not going to vote for him anyway. I heard something from one of the talking heads yesterday that makes sense. When November rolls around most all the negative crap that has been dished out by Hillary, or whomever, will be old news. It hasn't made a dent in Obama popularity and he has weathered this storm. Sure the Republicans will rehash the Clinton or her minions accusations but it just isn't going to matter by then.

• Tom3 · 1 year ago
The only thing I cannot understand is why McCrazy is polling in the 40's and is in a statistical dead heat with Obama and Hillary both.

And that's not enough to beat the Diebold Spread.

Why is he polling ten points higher than Chimpy when he is obviously 4 more years of Chimpy?

What's the disconnect here? I don't get it.

Obama is "stooping" to answer them so that he doesn't get swift-boated like John Kerry did.

Ignoring the meme didn't make it go away for Kerry, and it won't make it go away for Obama.

Obama is handling this the right way, don't dis him for it, unless you want him to lose in November. Seriously, the Obamaniacs keep touting his ability to get crossover votes among independents and Republicans. That won't happen if he doesn't make it clear he feels patriotic.

Kerry got slammed for not responding to swiftboat attempts, now Obama gets slammed FOR responding to them... sheesh. We are our own worst enemies, aren't we?

Is there any Kevin Bacon connection with the hardy boys, I mean "Jeff Gannon", bush and Larry Cramer?
• FunMe · 1 year ago
Anyone who says Obama doesn't love America is a LIAR. Period.

Yes, we do have to answer back with a BIG PUNCH whenever these LIES continue. We should learn from someone like Rachel Maddow who is always calm, cool & collected when she responds to an idiot statement like Obama does not love america.;

She is GREAT with short-circuting the other side with fact and just telling them what they are doing is LYING all the while being so calm and cool.

Someone says that to me I say, how long have you been carrying this LIE. Are you that desperate that you always resort to LIES?
• Sage24 · 1 year ago
On MSNBC Nora O'Donnel spoke to a lady who had interviewed Rasputin Rove, and said that Rove mentioned the fact that Obama does not wear an american flag pin. They said it might be an indication that they might attack him on this.
The lady also mentioned that Rove himself was not wearing a pin.

How petty have we become? Patriotism is not wearing a pin, or displaying the flag. It is mostly about the service you do for your country, by serving the people around you, in your state. You can be proud of your country, but you don't have to make a false show about it. You are measured by your actions.
I think the fact that Bush and Cheney sent our kids to fight an unnecessary war, whilst wearing these pins, do not show patriotism.
• theWalrus · 1 year ago
Mike_H ..FunMe...

Agree. The Obama camp MUST respond quickly and effectively to crap like this. The point about Kerry is well taken. Given a little "no response" time from our side the rightwing slime machine will pick up on almost any story and push it out there to an eager, waiting Media.
• FunMe · 1 year ago
CDS2 ... how long have you been LYING?

Did your parents teach you to LIE?

Or is it the current bush climate of LYING being OK?

Were you born with the LYING gene.

And how come your butt has the word LIAR in that ugly tattoo?

Just curious?
• CDS2 · 1 year ago
Please tell me where I lied? I never lie. I'm too old to lie. How old are you, somewhere in the early teens?
• moreleesafer · 1 year ago
you are not supposed to put your hand on your heart when you hear the pledge of allegience. you are supposed to stand. you only put your hand on your heart for the Pledge of Allegiance. sounds like you are less than patriotic if you don't know the rules. I served 10 years in the USAF so I happen to know. I am a woman in America whose parents fought for civil rights. collectively, my family has spent 20 years (and counting) in the military. My Mother watched two of her children enter the military and 1 go off to war. and you know what? there are still times when she says "Goddamn America", as do I. When I get followed around a Goddamned grocery store by a minimum wage earning snot nosed caucasian kid who thinks I want to steal cigarettes and whose trailer trash ass I can literally afford to buy and sell on the open market---I sometimes say Goddamn America too.
I bet that woman who works for KBR and got brutalized by her co-workers said Goddamn America.
That is the beauty of this nation. we have the right to free speech. we have a flexible constitution so anything that would make us say Goddamn America is something that we have the power to fix or change.
• CDS2 · 1 year ago
moreleesafer...

I was tought that one should place their hand over their heart for the pledge of allegiance and the National Anthem. I'm sorry you have experienced racial problems....I do not condone that in any form, but I fail to see how that subject relates to my comments. Concerning the Constitution, I have never believed it to be 'flexible'. That is one fundamental difference between Democrats and Republicans.
• shanobama · 1 year ago
Read the chapter on the Constitution in "The Audacity of Hope".

Obama gives both sides of this Constitutional difference between Dems and Reps, but then expands on these two approaches to show how the Constitution relates to the modern age. He is a very good teacher and understands this subject very well.
• CDS2 · 1 year ago
Thanks for a civil and exceptional response. I'll check it out.

And the insanity of not voting for Obama because he's a Muslim...
• CDS2 · 1 year ago
Alfred.....he's a Christian !
• BuddyNovinski · 1 year ago
Precisely my point! He is a member of the United Church of Christ. However, one client I had from the Assembly of God insisted the lie he is a Muslim. It's unlikely the Relgious Reich is going to vote for him anyway. I suppose Tiger Woods would be unacceptable as a Buddhist? Anyway, this former Muslim denounced Muhamed as a false prophet, and reiterated that Allah is not the same God as Jews and Christians worship. I left him talk until he left after he paid for his tax return. I can have a desk calendar counting down the days left of Schrub at my regular workplace, but politics are forbidden at H&R Block. Only one week left of two jobs!
• shanobama · 1 year ago
(CDS, if you really want to know who Obama is, read his two books. "The Audacity of Hope" and "Dreams of my Father". Or, go to his web site and read the 60 or so pages of policy issues and changes and why he thinks in this way. Do your homework, CDS, he is an exceptional person, a political prodigy, and a true American)

Ahhh, well, the difference between true love and a 'user' relationship. the Republicans have used America, and drained it dry by theft, mismanagement, catering to the uber wealthy and corporations to bring us to the brink of fascism. And the user relationship certainly extends into the way we have used the military, both on duty and when they are injured.

The Republicans have sullied the good name of America by promoting torture, locking up innocents with no access to a trial or lawyer, kidnapping people off the streets, and we have murdered outright 33 people in custody in our very own gulags-all the things for which a third rate dictatorship could be criticized.

Because of all this, and more, America must be brought to bear responsibility, to restore our Constitution, and to bring back balance into our rigged economic system. All things worth fighting for. If CDS can justify anything done in our name by this Bush Administration for the past 7 years, it would be either a lie or complete ignorance.

The only way Republicans can beat Obama is to lie, to smear with lies, to distort. I know because I correct an Obama smear email at least three times a week and send them back. The RW is putting together numerous emails, filled with outright lies about Obama. I wish I could think of some other way to handle this, but I think my RW friends need to know-most of the emails critical of Obama are pulled out of someones ass. They have NO credibility , someone made up a bunch of stuff, usually the worst RW nightmares, and compiles it in a email-all just fabricated lies.

And people like CDS believe it! That is the astonishing thing. Make up the most outrageous thing you can think of about Obama, and the faithful right wingers will believe even if you show them the facts. Sorry, but this tendency makes me think right wingers are somewhat stupid. Yea, I think it is stupid to deny facts and proof of facts their rightful importance.

shanobama..

I'm really not a book reader, (bad eyes) but I have listened to many of his speeches that he makes that are on TV. He really is a great orator, and I could actually end up voting for him (I've voted D 40% of the time), if he would get more specific....I mean all this change stuff....OK, we need change, but what would he change and how would he change it. That's missing from his talks. Noone want to leave Iraq more than I, but how would he do it, and when? My real problem with Obama is his lack of experience... If he can overcome that, he may win the National Election. Otherwise he is doomed.

Got a comment about the hand on the heart? How about the 20 years with the Rev? I'm not saying he's not a patriot. What I am saying is that we don't know much about him,. Some of the things we are learning about him, are really not real nice. He sure gives a great speech, but how about him leaving 80,000 troops in Iraq without a firm withdrawl date? I mean, who is this guy?

• ldlew · 1 year ago
The good Rev was right about what he said. I have 23 yrs of Military and I don't wear a flag on my lapel. I've been to 16 foreign countries for my government totaling about 14yrs, speaking 3 languages and I love my country but not what it has become. I seen hundreds of injured and dead.....there is no glory in war, and winning a war doesn't mean much when you don't have any friends left when that war is over, and you have no family because your wife has left you because of the horrible things that you dream of in the middle of the night. Being held in a foreign land after stepping off an airplane to tanks and machine guns and being held for 6 weeks without the right to leave. Patriotism is in your heart..not in your hand, on your lapel, or in your church.

• John-Michael · 1 year ago
No one I know questions Barack's patriotism. The attitudes of the people he has surrounded himself with seem to be sticking issues though. There is the Wright issue of course, but Michelle seems to present a growing perception problem. While her achievements, strength, and grace are pretty generally admired, her attitude about America, specifically "white America," has become a matter of concern.

Her grad and post grad work railed against the very system that granted her immense opportunities. That smacks of unfair angst and ingratitude among many well-to-do left leaning whites. By themselves, those theses could easily be written off as angst rooted in youth but not yet tempered by context. That recent sound bite of hers makes that case difficult to make. The whole "This is the first time in my adult life that I have been proud of my country" thing really seems to piss people off. As egalitarian as members of white suburbia might like to think themselves, the victim game still gets really bad press.
• bernarda · 1 year ago
Chris,

it is hard to find a blog which is even-handed. For pro-Hillary comment there is Talk Left, which itself gets blasted by the Obama groupies. Shakesville occasionally mentions attacks on Clinton, but rightly spends most of its time going after McCain and the wingnuts.

The Left Coaster seems slightly pro-Obama, but is more measured than most blogs. Onegoodmove seems fair to both. Crooks and Liars seems pro-Obama, but not too anti-Clinton. There are surely many others that I just don't remember or at least don't remember their bent.
