AMERICAblog: Does giving up a college deferment and six years on active duty count as loving one's country?

But the Reverend Wright hates Whitey! He hates America! He blames the victims of 9/11! Lather, rinse, repeat (ad infinitum).

Georgie was too pretty to go into the Army or Marines. Most memorable thing ever said about him was by Kelly Ripa: "George Stephanopoulos is getting married? To a woman?!"

Be thankful that America doesn't have a monopoly on English-language news!

    The dumbest debate in America?
US elections 08: The hosts on last night's ABC Democratic debate were shameful: don't they realise America is sick of their junk food?

Patriotism is measured by how many flag pins you have on your lapel.
  • Nigel Elliott · 1 year ago
    grasshopper,

According to the GOP, patriotism means killing Arabs where ever the neocons see fit.

George Stephanopoulos = Tom Cruise, another brainwashed midget!
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
The answer to the question, "Does Reverence Wright love his country?" would have to be a flat, "No." Why? Well, because Reverend Wright DOES NOT wear a flag lapel pin on his preacher's stole! That proves it. SNARK!
  • DaveTheAngryRhodeIslander · 1 year ago
Just because someone is critical of the bad things of ones country doesn't mean that person hates his country. There a lots of things wrong in our country - anyone who thinks that we're infallible as a nation is a fool.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
"Rev Wright obviously underwent something or a combination of things that made him hate his country. " I disagree with that statement. I hate certain aspects of my country, but I'm a veteran and LOVE my country. In fact, I'm sure I love some of the same things Reverend Wright loves about the country. On the other hand, I hate how our country is evolving. It is becoming something I don't recognize as what represented the very best of our country. I used to be proud we didn't torture, but we can't say that anymore. I used to proud of our populism in this country, but now our country bails out Wall Street tycoons with tax dollars. You can love the very best and hate the worst of your country. It can be a complicated thing, and it should be. Anyone who loves their country without question is in danger of becoming a FASCIST!

Trinity Church was not a large church when Rev. Wright was called as its pastor, there were only a few dozen members.

While all of that is quite impressive, past achievements or commitments do not exonerate you from your current position. By your logic he could go out and blow up a building tomorrow but would still be a patriot who loves America. You have juxtaposed two seemily related but inappropriate items.

    Stephanopoulos defends debate performance:

“We asked tough but appropriate questions,” Stephanopoulos told me by phone this afternoon.

When I asked whether questions about flag pins or Bosnia are actually relevant to voters, he replied: “Absolutely.”

“The vote for the president,” Stephanopoulos said, “is one of the most personal” decisions that someone makes.

Tom Shales wrote a good opinion piece about last night's disaster of a debate:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/ar...

    My favorite part:

"Gibson sat there peering down at the candidates over glasses perched on the end of his nose, looking prosecutorial and at times portraying himself as a spokesman for the working class. Blunderingly he addressed an early question, about whether each would be willing to serve as the other's running mate, "to both of you," which is simple ineptitude or bad manners. It was his job to indicate which candidate should answer first. When, understandably, both waited politely for the other to talk, Gibson said snidely, "Don't all speak at once."

Gibson ought to have his pompous ass kicked.

That a question like is the Reverand Wright patriotic got asked in a Democratic debate is exactly what's wrong with our discourse. It's not a question you will hear these guys ask in Republican debate. It's idiotic and downright insulting to judge patriotism based on the criteria established by our elite media who wouldn't know how to lace up a pair of army boots if you gave them a manual and a week to practice. New rule. The only people who should be able to judge someone else's partiotism are Medal of Honor winners. That should narrow the field a bit.

Speaking of Charlie Gibson, someone needs to remind him he is nothing more than a very fortunate news reader. These media types need to realize they are making far more money than they are worth and the viewer realizes this, and doesn't worship them. The media types need to look into the mirror and stop worshipping themselves. No one voted for Charlie Gibson to be the debate moderator, so they need to be properly respectful to the candidates. They don't need to be sycophantic, and bow to them like they do when moderating Republican debates, but they should at least provide some modicum of respect and not snarl at them like they are imposters. The media need to remember they might be in danger of losing their capital gains tax cuts is that Democrat gets elected, but the rest of us want an answer to how we are going to fill our gas tanks to get to work, and feed our families.
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
The whole founding fathers crew would be considered un-patriotic by the standards of the Republicans.

We all might as well retreat to our own little corners if we can only associate with the people that we agree with. If your boss makes a comment that you don' t agree with just quit. If you see a co-worker reading a book that you don't agree with, never associate with that person again.
Rev. Wright is an American, he is not a terrorist, he has never blown anything thing up, the only time he has probably been to jail was to help inmates. He has done more for everyday Americans by 9 am than most people do all day.

    Here's a feel good story:

the GOP’s most highly touted candidates posted mediocre fundraising numbers in this year’s first quarter, raising questions about their ability to seriously compete in races that were once at the top of the Republican radar.

Let's also keep in mind that while Cheney, Bush, Rice, Rumsfeld and the rest of the chicken hawk brigaid were enjoying their military-free happy lives, Mr. Wright was serving two branches of the US military, where he was expected to be willing to fight and die for a COUNTRY THAT DIDN'T EVEN ALLOW HIM TO VOTE!!!!

Only unAmerican coWards are afraid to say anything negative about their country. It terrifies them that there might be something that needs fixing, because fixing takes work, honesty, and integrity.

Patriots, real ones, not the fake "look at me ma, I got a lil flag pin on my lapel" types, look at their country objectively and see that nothing is perfect, and understand that pointing out the flaws is the first, very necessary step in making the country a better place.
The unAmerican coWards, meanwhile, are more than happy to sit in the sewage, call steaming piles of crap turd blossoms, and throw their bile around at their betters.

Something not mentioned much, but a documented fact is that during that period Dick Cheney not only go one DUI, but went out and drove drunk AGAIN and got a second DUI. He knowingly put lives at risk and drove a 10-ton weapon down the road. What a selfish pig.

Will Bunch's column was linked at Fark with a hero tag. For number of comments to it they don't have a number anymore just the word "lots". Everybody at Fark seems to be saying the same thing as the progressive left blogs. We need to keep this noise up until the MSM takes note, ABC publicly apologizes and fires Gibson and Stephanopoulus.

The cited biography of Rev Wright demonstrates exactly the response that should have been made by Obama. He should have considered overriding the questioner had they tried to cut him off accusing the questioner of being unfair and conservatively biased. Until the Democrats really understand how to turn this type of attack around and start accusing the media of a rather obvious bias, little or no progress will be made.

Thanks for digging this information up. I had never heard it before. Even before, I am amazed that our country can kill innocent Iraqis, start a war that is destined to kill, and lose our own troops...etc, etc. and yet if someone makes a point by saying "God DAMN America" for the immoral and evil things our own country has done. I would argue that person, being a human being, especially (though not limited to) a US citizen, had the right to ake that argument ANY TIME and ANY PLACE, with no obligation to have fought in wars, worn a uniform..or any of that. BUT when someone HAS, and we all know the kind of weasels like Bush and Cheney who had other priorities EVEN though they maintained they "believed in" the vietnam war, then they ought to be able to get EVEN more leeway.

God DOES (according to the bible) damn people that appluad violence to fellow man, that play GOD and seek revenge and want to punish, that promote unjust wars, and not least, and VERY clearly told, but both new and old testaments, in fact the only record of Jesus getting really angry was against money changers...the worship of false gods (the dollar) before all else.

As I have stated before...I am a verteran of the FIRST gulf war. I spent 10 years in the Air Force. and there are times I say God Damn America. I've earned that right. I don't wear my patriotism on my sleeve. I have not recited the pledge of allegience since I was in 7th grade. I decided that the daily ritual didn't mean a damn thing to me when I was reciting it next to the same white kids who called me the n-word and spit on me on my way to school. I stood, but when I got to the last sentence, I froze. I realized no, dammit there is not liberty and justice for all. there SHOULD be. but there isn't. and until there is , I will not be reciting the meaningless words.

Eff the lapel pin. Tom Delay wears a lapel pin while he is being booked for stealing MY tax dollars. Cheney wears a lapel pin while he disregards my (and the majority of American's) opinion on the war he and his buddy Bush LIED to us to start and continue to profit from. So yeah, Richard Wright is a partiot. I don't have to agree with him or his sermons. but dammit in this country we have the right to free speech (or used to) so he can say what he wants especially given the fact that he served in the military to protect the rights of others to do the same .
  • HalinPhx · 1 year ago
Exceptionally well done Joe! I am amazed at how many "flag-pin wearing" cowards, most of whom have done nothing for America except talk about their patriotism, have the balls to question the patriotism of others. As any combat verteran knows, it takes far more courage and love-of-country to stand in the face of the winds of convention and question this mindless hipocracy, than it does to slap on a flag pin, admire yourself in the mirror and look for any photo op you can get to profess that you're the most righteous sheep in the flock.

And kudos to moreleesafer for an excellent reply. In my books, if you got a stack of draft deferments and partied while the rest of us fought for our country, you shouldn't even be allowed to WEAR a flag pin on your lapel. Better yet, lets bring back the draft and remove all deferrments for anyone under 40! Then lets see which of these spineless twits really love their country. We'd be out of Iraq by tomorrow afternoon, and we'd be damn careful about starting another war for the profit of the few.

Great way to put things in perspective, Joe. However, Rev Wright obviously underwent something or a combination of things that made him hate his country. It couldn't have been lack of opportunity because the man is a multimillionaire.

    Busboy,

you have a NEGATIVE clout rating on this blog of -640. Can' t you take a hint...NO ONE cares what your little mind thinks. The entire blog thinks your a moronic troll. Go blog on Red State with the rest of the America-hating warmongering neocons so you can finish your destruction of our country. We all know you're too chickenshit and batshit crazy to serve in Iraq.
