AMERICAblog: Does Obama agree with Rick Warren that gays should live their entire lives without sex?

  • EdNSted · 11 months ago
Sorry if this has already been linked. Blue Texan, in a short but hard-hitting post over at FDL asks the obvious question:

Why Are Rick Warren’s Views Acceptable And Jeremiah Wright’s Not?

Obama's "all inclusive" meme is beginning to look more than a little hypocritical.
  • Al · 11 months ago
Obama's "all inclusive" crap, makes absolutely no sense. Only a moron would come up with that line. It's a George Bush statement. It has no relevance.
  • timncguy · 11 months ago
The weird thing about comparing Warren to Rev Wright is that Rev Wright supports marriage equality. And so does the church (United Church of Christ) that Obama was a member of for all those years.

So, my question is, where does Obama get his own "religious" objections to gay marriage if the church he was a member of approves of gay marriage?
  • scottinsf · 11 months ago
That is an awesome post. Everybody should read it.
  • Patrick · 11 months ago
Why would or "should" anyone be expected to live without sex? But the real question is can a person live without love? Two men, or two women find love together and Tubby wants them to sleep in separate beds and shake hands before going to bed at night.

Why is (other people's) SEX always on the minds of these people?
  • Webster · 11 months ago
Interesting. The "Civil Rights" portion of Change.gov reads:

"Further commenting on this blog post has been disabled by the blog admin."

I guess that's change Obama believes in. No more discussion.
  • Me · 11 months ago
so in that case, it's time to make civil rights and gay issues related comments on whatever other parts of their website have comments allowed. We should not let them off the hook easily.

I'm furious about this but not all that surprised.. my dad was wise when he told me that all politicians are liars. I"m just a little disappointed that he couldn't even wait after taking office to show his true colors.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 11 months ago
Further financial support to this campaign has been disabled by the blogger's wallet.

I can live without food that I like. Why should I have to?
  • Al · 11 months ago
Well, John, you spewed for months that Obama was the smartest man who ever lived. Life's a bitch, ain't it?

Waiting for the Monica symbols. This must be the fault of Hillary Clinton. We all know that already.

Aravosis, you need to do some long hard looking in the mirror my friend. Go back and read all the tripe you wrote about Obama. You questioned nothing, even when the facts were smacking you right in the face.

What did Obama say about Donnie McKlurkin? Oh, that's right, that it was our fault that we had a problem with it. McKlurkin stumped for Obama, and Obama let him get up and proclaim that he was saved from his disease. Donnie is an ex-gay.

Obama has a real problem with the gays, and this isn't an exaggeration. Go read his book. He constantly tries to justify tolerating the intolerant, by using some religious argument. So there you have it, we just voted in George Bush Part 2. Not only has he given the Right everything they've ever dreamed of, FISA, just being one, but now he's putting religion back into our government! Yippee!

At least this will finally shut the Obama fanatics up who act like Republicans, calling us all traitors if we don't support the President. In fact, they're still telling us this -- "Sit down, and shut up." Go read the Huffington Post articles if you don't believe me. I'm not even talking about the added commentary from users.

Can't wait to see the Supreme Court appointments Obama makes! And BTW, don't even attempt to say that the people outraged are Hillary lovers. I've seen this distraction thrown about now too. However, people have brought up a good point, that Obama has done not only what his backers proclaimed he wouldn't do, yet Hillary would, he's done stuff that even Hillary wouldn't put her foot in.

Obama will continue Bush's legacy. Yes, he's in a tight spot with not a lot of options. But the wiggle room he does have, he is making the biggest blunders imaginable.

I love it: Obama's historic victory is marked with bigotry, Prop. 8 passing. Then, the man who helped get it passed, is to get the spotlight on stage at Obama's second historic event! Obama just loves twisting that knife a little deeper with ever passing milestone.

Tubby says sex isn't an essential for life?

Wow. Who knew the human race has gotten this far via immaculate conception? That screws up everything I was taught in sex-ed.
  • gumbygirl · 11 months ago
Sex isn't essential to life? No wonder he's a fat miserable bastard!!!
  • Mark in Florida · 11 months ago
Well look at him...... seriously, that man has not had sex in 20 years.
  • gumbygirl · 11 months ago
He's never had good down and dirty sex, that's for sure.
  • Mark in Florida · 11 months ago
Let Warren keep talking. He sounds wackier and wackier..to even main stream people. This really makes Obama look bad. Why is he bringing people like this under the umbrella of "inclusion"??? .

I can see disagreeing with someone politically on say, tax structure, or foreign policy....yes, include all of the opinions and find the right answer...but THIS? NOW?

I am floored, speachless and angry.
  • FunMe · 11 months ago
He's beginning to make Rev. Wright look better and better each day.
    :-)
  • Mark in Florida · 11 months ago
exactly. Warren is a complete and utter nutbag.
  • johnosahon · 11 months ago
YES, John that is EXACTLY what he thinks, in fact john he told me so just as he was going into the live conference going on right now.

infact, he also told me that first thing he does in the white house is to pass the laws forcing us all gays into the priesthood or else "it'" would be cut off.

i just wanted to inform you about the latest of the latest breaking news.

THIS IS FUN, I'M SORRY JOHN, LOL
  • Mark in Florida · 11 months ago
Anyone who rails against gay people this hard has something to hide. There must be something on this guy...that's really bad. He looks guilty.

Also, isn't gluttony a sin??? Looks like Tubby needs to take a break from the fried twinkies at the county fair. He is no stranger to butter.
  • FunMe · 11 months ago
Could he be a closet "bear"?

Maybe "Jeff Gannon", now that he's fat, can help with this one.
  • Mark in Florida · 11 months ago
Yes, me thinks Mr. Warren doth protest too much......
  • Rob Mule · 11 months ago

Tubby gets absolutely demolished by Larry King (!) using his own words. I can only imagine the "intelligent" sermons that go on each week at Brokeback, sorry Saddleback each week.
  • Scott · 11 months ago
I would argue that given overpopulation, homosexuality is a natural and expected evolutionary outcome. Look at the benefits accruing to humanity-- sexual relations and even committed pair bonding without the possibility of reproduction. For a species and a planet suffering from the effects of humanity's inability to yet control our reproduction, homosexuality would seem to be a preferred trait in at least a significant percentage of the population.
  • SCLiberal · 11 months ago
"sexual relations and even committed pair bonding without the possibility of reproduction"
That applies to some straights too. I've never felt the urge to procreate and so have not done so. There are at least 4 other people in my office, married couples, who are childless also. That tired argument the religious use about marriage being for procreation sure lets us out. Guess both of my marriages were sins! LOL
  • timncguy · 11 months ago
but, but, but... marriage is for "the children". How did any of you get a marriage license in the first place?
  • No Hope In Politics · 11 months ago
Cokes to anyone who's already said this, but here's how Obama/Warren will likely play this out:

    1) Warren will politely decline the invite - thereby saving face with his own & being praised by the media as courteous.

    2) Obama will accept Warren's decision, and say how sorry he is to have to do so - thereby looking good to 'moderates' (read: righties) & making radicals (read: progressives) look intolerant.

    3) Obama will ask David Kuo or a 'moderate' female to take Warren's place.

This is the 'endgage': make Obama look 'center right/moderate' – make progressives look intolerant & hateful.

    Isn't CHANGE wonderful?

So the Zen teacher bought a hot dog and handed the vendor a $20.00 bill. The vendor put the $20.00 in his cash drawer and closed it.
"Hey!" said the Zen teacher. "Where's my change?"
"Change comes from within," replied the vendor.

Love that joke. Gary Renard uses it in his book The Disappearance of the Universe.
  • Gary SF · 11 months ago
I don't think that is what is going to happen. We already have experience with Obama's team asking a homophobe to perform at an event, the gay community and others going ape-shit and the homophobe still performed. It is more likely that Warren will give the invocation and Obama will toss us a bone in the 1st half of 2009.
  • Indigo · 11 months ago
So the comic book theologian's teaching is:
"Hate the sinner, hide the sin." Did I get that right?

About Mr. Obama: it's painfully obvious that his spirituality is a matter of cynical Bible belt convenience. His advisors might take a fresh tack and recommend that he stop making statements regarding religion except to say, "I strongly support the separation of church and state."
  • Kara · 11 months ago
The Catholic Church's official position is that gays should live their lives without sex. Would you have the same reaction to a party-lining observing Catholic prelate? Just make sure you are being fair.
  • timncguy · 11 months ago
the Catholic Curch also denies marriage rites to a couple if one is divorced. But, the state still isuues thema CIVIL marriage license.

Who CARES what any religion says about anything. None of our civil laws are supposed to be based on religious dogma anyway. Just becuase some of them happen to coincide with some religious teaching doesn't mean they were derived from religion.

    Enough with STRAIGHT MALE supremacy!

I am still STUNNED that Obama would make such a STUPID decision, not to mention callous and insensitive.

    "Change" - yeah right!
Does Obama realize how much he deflated enthusiasm for his inauguration? When we all thought he would be uniting America, he's starting by DIVIDING America once again. What the f*** is wrong with him?

I hope and pray that EVERY gay organization refrains from coming to DC in January, especially the "gay band". He deserves to be fought because of his total disregard for a major component of his consituency. Can we say 1 term President?

Meanwhile, where's the outrage from women?
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 11 months ago
should the band save their self-respect and stay home?
  • eclare · 11 months ago
I'm actually really surprised that they haven't dropped out already.

I'm a woman and I'm outraged. As far as I'm concerned, gay rights and women's rights are so intertwined that there's no point in compartmentalizing my anger over each issue. It's all part and parcel of, a you call it, Straight Male supremacy - a bunch of losers with low self esteem who pine over "the way things used to be" and are so afraid of any deviation from their own view of sexuality that they strive to control everyone else.

    Ugh.
  • Older_Wiser · 11 months ago
I'm a woman, and I've expounded my rage all over the place here. And I further don't appreciate Warren's "womb politics" anymore than his gay bashing. He's a complete misogynist/homophobe.

Yes, I voted for Obama...consider the alternative.

But, my instinct told me that when Obama threw Jeremiah Wright under the bus, he was aiming for the center. A church he had gone to for 20 years? Someone whom he considered a friend and mentor? How do you do that if not for political expediency?

Jeremiah Wright must have been deeply, deeply hurt but kept his own counsel while Obama continued on his way to the WH.

The way Obama treated his friend should have been a red blinking indicator...
  • No Hope In Politics · 11 months ago

    THE FIG LEAF.
Obama's problem with Pastor Tubby Warren mirrors his problem with Pastor Wright. How to dump the nutjob after having once endorsed him, without seeming indecisive, trying to have it both ways, or catering to his supporters. He found a way with Pastor Wright after Wright's outlandish interview which Obama reflected upon and decided was contrary to all the (inclusive) positions he had avowed over the course of his career. The fig leaf is pastor Tubby's new interview with Ann Curry on NBC's TODAY show. Obama can now say the same thing about Warren as he said about Wright when Wright got to hot to handle. WARNING to the Obama insiders. Stay the hell away from crazy evangelical religious zealots. You just don't do well with these guys. But it is a teachable moment and if you want a Sistah Soljah moment, then go after your own community, the crazy assed blacks who put through prop. 8. Obama needs to take responsibility for Prop 8 which brought out such a surplus of black voters which then consequently resulted in the passage of Prop 8. The teachable moment is that there is a difference between having some crazy religious belief, to which we are all entitled, and seeking to enact it into law, which Warren did sucessfully, and which Constitutional scholar Obama should teach about.........hey, is that gay Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson warming up in the background. What greater symbol of religious tolerance and INCLUSION might there be?
  • RainbowPhoenix · 11 months ago
The blacks did not pass prop 8. 58% are estimated to have voted for it, and at only 6% of California's population, there simply weren't enough to have tipped the scales either way.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 11 months ago
Obama's problem: he betrays his own authentic, secular intellectual nature by latching on to the big noize he thinks has the biggest political pay-off for him. So Wright for his career as a South Side pol, and now Warren for the national stage. (And McCain as Episcopalian-turned-Babtist was no different).
  • davigoli · 11 months ago
No, if that's what you think of Obama you've been reading him wrong. This move is entirely consistent with what he's been saying this whole time: sit down with your enemies without preconditions. Like it or not, Warren represents 46% of America that won't magically disappear when Obama is sworn in. We need to bring them along or they will come back to haunt us.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 11 months ago
Agreed; but this is not the way you do it. As Maddow said, the decision is "lose-lose" for everyone except Warren's campaign to promote himself and his followers. The left loses, Obama loses base support, and the right (suspicious of Warren) loses.
  • davigoli · 11 months ago
I like Rachel Maddow a lot, but she underestimated Obama's judgment in the campaign. Reaching out is not the same as giving in, and Obama hasn't given in yet, so let's see how this plays out. Also, I think this can be a win-win: the base gets agitated to push for change, and the right-wingers eat one of their own (Warren) if they don't adjust.
  • Silver Owl · 11 months ago
LOL! If all men were like Warren we'd die out. The idea of boffing that asshole is repugnant. On a side note, the two male peguins raising their baby peguins obviously didn't get Warren's message. I think God just pretty much told Warren to fuck off minus the orgasm.
  • Jennifer · 11 months ago
Funme: I'm a woman. I'm pretty pissed off. Does that count?

I've written a raft of emails and signed a petition. I've forwarded email addies to bitch to to my buddies.

He's a piece of shit, for sure and I'm not buying Obama's apologism for having Tubby on the dais, either.
  • FunMe · 11 months ago
Yes, it does count A LOT! We all need to be united.

I am beyond words with this selection of a wacky "preacher" to say the prayer in such a historic day.
  • anonymoustoo · 11 months ago
Christ, where do I even begin? How would he address that homosexuality that exists in other species, such as bonobo monkeys? Shall we segregate them in our zoos and disallow them certain privileges (to be determined by the evangelicals, of course) that the "normal" monkeys enjoy? And don't give me that "one man for one woman FOR LIFE" bullshit. It's "until DEATH do we part", and there's nothing saying the surviving spouse can't remarry upon the death of a current spouse. And let's not even mention their embrace of divorce - they seem all too willing to accept/forgive anyone for that.
And what's up with that last sentence? Sex isn't essential for life? Didn't he just say that gays, according to evolution, would've died out if evolution were true because they couldn't reproduce? Are you f*ucking kidding me? So, in one breath, he says reproduction is essential for continuation of a species, but then says sex isn't essential for life. WTF is this guy smoking/snorting/inhaling/eating?
  • Eric · 11 months ago
"He also said that gays prove that evolution doesn't exist, because if evolution were a correct theory, we'd have died out long ago"

Wow, I hope he was joking because otherwise that is breathtakingly stupid. Earth to Warren: Gay people are not a different species. Moron.
  • MikeinSanJo · 11 months ago
This fat bitch needs to get off his high horse.

Because a gay couple can't reproduce without assistance, they deserve to be discriminated against, beaten and murdered?

    Religion is Sin.

Hey, John, the Greek Orthodox Church has the same position as your Rick Warren on homosexual sex. If Obama had chosen a Greek Orthodox priest, the religion of your family, to deliver the prayer, would you be beating this "hate Obama" drum then???

I just got an email from David Plouffe of the Obama HQ, telling me how well everything is going.
    I replied:

    Dear David,

Circumstances change perceptions. The decision for Rick Warren to give the invocation at the inauguration is unacceptable. You already know that it is a direct slap in the face at the gay community of which I am a member. Mr. Obama has fences to mend. Meanwhile, the vote is one of no further confidence.
  • cmpnwtr · 11 months ago
Hey, everyone, let's all play the gays vs. blacks card. That really works well! This blog is turning into a hate group.
  • renegademom · 11 months ago
Move on. You're about to lose a faithful dyke reader of this blog. I love this blog, but this whole argument is so "sixties".

moving on to raise my children (adopted as a lesbian), help clean up my city, continue my equal rights work, and in general LIVE.
  • Gridlock · 11 months ago
How about you move on, since you're tired of fighting. Go raise your kids.

The rest of us will pick up the slack, because sorry honey, we cannot rest for even one minute. Look what happens when our guard goes down for even an instant. Prop 8, Warren, DOMA, DADT, etc etc etc.

Perhaps if you old guard had done more in the 80's and 90's we wouldn't be having this discussion ;)
  • davigoli · 11 months ago
Don't you even go there. The 80's had AIDS to deal with, which was enough. Then the gays got stabbed in the back by Clinton. Then Bush happened. All the while the old guard was doing what they could while Christian closet-cases worked to take their rights away.

No, we didn't get where we want to be. We never do. But we make progress. Back then, nobody even talked about gay rights - it wasn't an option. Now it's front and center, and we can have this discussion. Maybe at the end of all of this even Rick Warren will open his heart a little bit. Who knows? But he most certainly will not if we keep playing the part of the enemy. That just plays into their fears and stereotypes.
  • renegademom · 11 months ago
    Pleease move on.........

    this is so sixties.....so culture-war-ish, so victim-y......

and, I'm a dyke who lived through the culture wars, and in the process adopted three african-american kids as a lesbian, brought my Irish-Catholic family around to both my sexuality and my kids, protested, marched, engaged in demonization and, the times have changed. Maybe I'm just too OLD (54) to be a progressive any more.

    bu-bye.
  • Observer · 11 months ago
    this is so sixties

You mean when people had spines & progress was made? You suggest we be more Oughties, lay down quietly and thank the tanks for rolling over us & crushing us?

Maybe you're just too... oh, I don't know... tired? Take a nap. See if you wake up in a world where Warren get his way & you get thrown in jail for owning a dildo. I mean, hey... there's lots of dykes in jail, right? Good times. Good times.
  • renegademom · 11 months ago
do you really think that me and my dildo are going to get thrown in jail because Rick Warren says a one minute prayer at the inauguration. do you really think that the incredible forward movement that has occurred on lgbt rights is suddenly going to grind to a halt? NO. I will continue my ongoing work for equality, and so will many others.

I'm not decrying dissent and protest. On the contrary. The work that I and so many others have done over the past thirty years has been a huge part of the change that has occurred.

And you are so right, I AM tired a lot, with a 10, 11, and 13 year old, a full-time job, and two part time jobs. I voted for obama AS a single mom who has been on my own due to the Bush policies. As a hard worker who has been ignored by Bush and his cronies. As a woman, and as a mother who wants her kids to have a world to grow up in, opportunities, and respect for who they are. (my 13 year-old, btw, currently states he is Bisexual.....)

So, I won't wake up in that world. I would like to wake up in a world, however, that can constructively engage, instead of...oh, I don't know.......
  • Tom · 11 months ago
Constructively engaging and talking about your dildo in the same post. Wow that's really constructive.

I mean, I'm used to it, but I just wanted to make it clear that you're choosing to sit this one out while I fight.

And I don't even mind, just don't tell me I'm wrong to disagree, strongly.
  • Tom · 11 months ago
Sorry to tell you but the culture war is stil on. You still cannot legally marry another woman and if you lived in another state you wouldn't be able to adopt those children. Either step up and continue the fight or sit down and shut up. You're not helping the cause by capitulating before the job is done.

    Wait a minute!

How can Rick dismiss Evolution if he believes that being gay is a choice because nature cannot select people who make choices? If he believes that we disprove natural selection then being gay is biological manifestation.
  • Chris M. · 11 months ago
The consistent percentage of homosexuality in a population actually proves evolution. It is what would be predicted.
  • Webster · 11 months ago
He can dismiss Evolution because he's as dumb as a sack of doorknobs. (And looks like one, too, I'm tempted to say--but gee, that would be unkind, and I wouldn't want to be unkind to someone who thinks I'm equivalent to a child molester...)
  • nikto · 11 months ago
Nobody should have to put up with religious-right BS claptrap about "science".
    Those idiots scorn science anyway.

Evolutionary biology has validated the normalcy of same-sex coupling
within EVERY FRIKKIN' SPECIES THAT REPRODUCES SEXUALLY.

If your species reproduces sexually, then you're gonna' have from 4% to 15% incidence
of same-sex coupling within your species. Period.

ALL genetic flaws/diseases, weaknesses occur in the statistical band from 0.1% to about 2%, tops.
Completely separate and distinct from adaptive functions (which HELP survival of the species),
and occur at rates *enclosing the incidence-rate of same-sex coupling*.

    Bottom-Line:
Gayness, same-sex coupling, whatever you want to call it, is
a NORMAL ADAPTIVE FUNCTION IN ALL SEXUALLY-REPRODUCING SPECIES.

How it helps survival is clearly not linear & not well-understood, YET.

But the fact of NORMALCY is beyond question, unless you dismiss science entirely.

Every healthy species exists as a cluster of normal "types".

"Gay" is just one of those normal types, like one of the various fingers on a hand.

Something I think that is ABNORMAL is *adoption of right-wing politics and social views*.
Desiring repression and destruction is not normal or healthy.

    Clearly, a pathology, IMO.

did you watch the debates? read the papers? pay any attention at all?

"Although Barack Obama has said that he supports civil unions, he is against gay marriage. In an interview with the Chicago Daily Tribune, Obama said, "I'm a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman."

Obama also said without blinking or hesitating on "Meet the Press" with Russert that he DID NOT believe homosexuality was a sin.

This made me support him. If Obama's belief does not transcend into action, then he loses my support.
  • Boycottutah · 11 months ago
Catholics do not believe that homosexuality is a sin, only that homosexual acts are sinful. Barry was playing the same word game. He is a Chicago pol and a lawyer. Get it. He could probably get a blowjob from an intern and state "I did not have sexual relations with that man".
  • timncguy · 11 months ago
Oh come on. Obama is certainly smart enough to recognize the difference between a religious marriage RITE and a CIVIL marriage.

Besides, his church was the United Church of Christ which supports marriage equality.

He also said that gays prove that evolution doesn't exist, because if evolution were a correct theory, we'd have died out long ago. Nice man.
    __________________________________________

wtf, that doesn't even make sense.
  • Chris M. · 11 months ago
If Warren also said that that gays prove evolution does not exist then it shows his complete ignorance of genetics and evolution. In fact, the fact that the gay population has been shown to maintain a pretty much consistent percentage is exactly what would be predicted if evolution & the genetics therof were true --- The percentage of homosexuality would be all over the place if there was something other than genetics involved. SO IT IS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT WARREN BELIEVES-- HE'S IGNORANT.
  • Eyeball_Kid · 11 months ago
OMG!! It's the blind leading the blind, all on national cable TV!!

Jeez. Both Larry King AND Warren are as stupid as rocks. King buys into Warren's asinine logic and says that Darwin's wrong??? What is with these people? Is King on pain killers? Or is he in the early stages of Alzheimer's? As for Tubby, he's just an ignorant nit-wit who makes millions off stimulating the reptilian part of his followers' brains.

Wait a minute? People can live without sex? What a miserable existence that would be. I'm monogamous, but I get mine about 5 times a week. I guess I could live without SEX but I'd be a fat, judgmental prick if I did.

I'm through with contributing to these campaigns (i.e. OBAMA) who want to sit on the fence. I gave in the primary; I gave in the general election and I gave for the transition. They need NOT ask me for anymore $$$ or my vote again.

Hey Chris - Here's the letter my mom wrote to the Obama "Change" team:

You have broken my heart. I have been a civil-rights worker since 1946. (I was born in 1940.) I am a white, still-working grandmother from Kansas (working in New York.) Inviting an avowed bigot to invoke your inauguration is a real slap in the face. All the hope you imparted went away. I contributed more money to your campaign than I've ever committed to anyone before. Please, don't ask me for anything more. "Reaching across the aisle" is one thing. Rewarding bigotry is another.

Please do not ask me for any more support for anything.

Does Fatty Ricky realize that as long as there are babies there will be gay people? The only way gay people will "die" out is if the human race stops reproducing and we all die. Idiot!
  • Deadly sin of 7 · 11 months ago
Rick needs to live the rest of his life without food. He is a fat ass glutton:

Christ thus warns the world: "Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; but the same day that Lot went out of Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed." Luke 17:28-30

Gluttony is spoken about in the bible many times over. Rick's fat ass is going straight to hell.
  • TampaZeke · 11 months ago
Sex isn't essential for life? WTF? Has the man gone completely insane.? One minute he's arguing that gay marriage is a threat to society because if we allow it straight relationships will cease to exist and the human race will go extinct. The next he's telling us that sex isn't essential for life? Is he so ignorant that he doesn't know where babies come from or does he not know that having babies is essential for life?

These people talk themselves into circles where they step on their own arguments. As the old saying goes, "give enough rope...".
  • imadoc · 11 months ago
Rick Warren is a fat, ignorant homophobe. His presentability to the mainstream of America is the result of marketing and maldigested paperback pap.

We all know this, John. Barrack Obama knows this. Can we consider that the president-elect might have legitimate reasons for asking Warren to pray at his inaguration, despite Warren's multiple shortcomings?

    Please?
  • ShirleyGoodnessanMercy · 11 months ago
The use of derogatory comments about fat people here is very sad. We work so hard to make people stop dehumanizing us as gay people, yet people are using terms like tubby, fatty and fat ass to dehumanize fat people. Very sad. The word fat should no more be used as an insult than the word gay.
  • Tom · 11 months ago
I think you miss the point that Warren ignores the sin of gluttony while making a big deal over the false notion that being gay is a sin.
  • anonymoustoo · 11 months ago
I'm not sure that's the intent. It's directed toward Ricky only (well, and other bigots) to point out the hypocrisy in his "I'm such a good christian (except for the glutony and greed things)." You see, If he can preach to everyone else what bad people they are, then we should and will throw it back in his face. Anyone that high up in the religious heirarchy and so politically involved is in no doubt reaping some profits from both, which is driven by greed. I'm getting to be quite the fatass myself, so what. My hairline is receding so I now have a five-head (as opposed to "four"head) and I'm bowlegged. Not calling me a waddling bald fatass won't change that I am indeed all these things. Call me whatever you want, I doubt I'll lose sleep over it. I think we all need to get over being so but-hurt when someone calls us a word we don't like. They're just words - they have no intrinsic or tangible value. A rose is a rose, so to speak. I'm a 30-something married male with a 7 month old baby. I find no "sanctity" in the word marriage. It's a word and could be called anything. Even the definitiion, in my point has no sanctity. It's the tangible aspects of marriage that have the sanctity - the intimate moments together, the thoughtfulness and the friendship. The actions that go along with it, I guess. The word "fag" is just a word, it's the actions of the people who use this word that are the bad thing. The hate crimes, the stripping of civil liberties, the callous disregard to treat others fairly. THAT'S what we should be fighting about.
  • regis18 · 11 months ago
Fat people for the most part can do something about it. Gays cannot. That is why fat people are subject to scorn.

One reason that Homosexuality is in the Gene pool is Humans were not naturally One Man-One Woman in the past, they were One Man-Many Women so that left a part of the group that could not get women with a big problem what to do with loneliness and Sexual Frustration.1st they could be unsocial and fight and cause mayhem in the tribe that would get them killed or kicked out,2nd get some other mans woman to cheat with him, again something that ends in death or banishment for the man when(not if) he gets caught (maybe that's why everyone loves to talk about someone Cheating on someone, maybe it's was a way to keep cheating in check.),3rd the only safe,non-disruptive thing for Men with no Women to do was to be with other Men with no Women which over time would cause a group of Men who only wanted to be with Men but that does not mean they refused to mate and father children, just look at one group of Hero's of the Right The Spartan's.As for why there is Lesbianism 1st One Man can't "take care" of One Woman much less many women so since cheating with another man means death or banishment that means this 2nd option Women "taking care"of Women which leads to why Hetro Men love to see Women "taking care" of Women it was a natural part of the One Man-Many Women groups in the Tribe and this too would lead in time to Women who only wanted to be with Women of couse they would be forced to have children by the Men who owned them so Lesbianism would stay in the Gene Pool.Of course I could be wrong about this.

First, Tubby, Darwin was not about survival of the fittest. He was about natural selection.

Second, isn't it amazing that evangelicals believe that gays should abstain from sex all the while having the highest divorce rate among American religious groups. I personally know a couple of evangelicals who believe that gays should abstain yet both are on their third spouse following two divorces each. Frankly, I could give a rat's ass as to whether they are divorced or not but the Bible makes divorce a sin because of its inevitable tie to subsequent adultery (remarriage). So the question is -- why don't evangelical divorcees abstain from sex? Otherwise, the evangelicals are nothing but hypocrites. Who knew?
  • MrSippi · 11 months ago
Thomas Berger in his book Little Big Man prosed a portrait of a gluttonous hypocritical western preacher. Everything I read about Tubby Warren brings that picture back to my mind.
  • Boycottutah · 11 months ago
Perhaps Barry believes that the LGBT Community is only 2 percent of the population, so we do not matter (we know that the real number is between 7-12 percent). Maybe Barry thinks that we he will gain in numbers and support by exploiting the fact that many people in America and the world hate us, and that by telling us that we are less than human he will gain the support of the hateful majority. Either way this kind of makes him a snake.

Everyone I have spoken to (and I work in a top SF lawfirm) is livid over this and his stand against same sex marriage. He is pissing off the LGBT Community and making himself an enemy, one that should he continue his antigay behavior, we won't be working for in 2012. He lost our energy, our faith, our hope, and most importantly to Barry, our big fat gay dollars.

  • Katie · 11 months ago
Well, I just have to say that as a scientist this makes me extremely angry. Stop trying to use science to "prove" things that you claim should be based solely on faith!! That whole evolution comment is just complete B.S. Being homosexual does not in fact limit or prevent a person from having children and thus passing on his/her genes. Homosexual people have been procreating through out history. Therefore, being homosexual does not affect a person's fitness and this trait would not be selected against. Also, the fact that he says that sex is "not an essential part of life" just shows how utterly delusional the man is. Of course it's an essential part of life!! It's the means to create life! We're all pre-programmed to need it and love it!
  • ChrisSF · 11 months ago
Yes, not to mention that what is adaptive from an evolutionary perspective does not necessarily equate to what maximizes the chance of one particular organism passing on genes. There are traits that benefit the survival of the group that do not always benefit the passing on of the individual's genes. I think I will rely on Stephen Jay Gould rather than Rick Warren for information on evolutionary theory.
  • cowboyneok · 11 months ago
Yes, that recessive gene crap just proves how ignorant he is. He shouldn't be talking about genetics unless he understands genes and selection. Obviously, he doesn't understand how homosexuals could enhance survival of a species. Take for instance, a family who has a lot of males born to a single set of parents. If there is an imbalance of the male to female ratio then it would behoove the species to have homosexuals. If that culture had same sex coupling, along with those particular individuals providing other important functions for the group's survival then it would enhance the survival of the group. Say one of the younger males in the pack was gay. He would likely support the parents while the brothers went off to start their own families. It probably happened a lot like that in the past and it still happens today! Ever heard of a "mama's boy?" Hmmmm? Of course, that would be just ONE example of the myriad of diverse examples. Its another reason why gays make good soldiers. Gay Spartans were tough SOB's!
  • RitornaVincitor · 11 months ago
Actually Catholics worship the Judeo-Roman version of the Egyptian god Horus. All Christians do. They just don't realize it.

But what really interested me was that the interview with Warren reveals he's not all that bright. Of course his ideas are stupid. We all know that. But look at how his brain works as he answers King's questions. Not all that well.

  • wildwest · 11 months ago
Isn’t there a bit of cognitive dissonance between saying that sex is "not an essential for life," and that homosexuals continued existence is proof Darwin’s Theory of Evolution is wrong because "homosexuality would be a recessive gene because it doesn't reproduce and you would think that over thousands of years that homosexuality would work itself out of the gene pool." Just sayin'.
  • carlin · 11 months ago
I don't think Obama cares one way or another about gay people. I think he invited Rick Warren purely because of the potential votes that evengelicals can deliver in a reelection bid. So what if he has to throw a few million supporters under the bus? Obama knows that gay americans have no where else to go. What are they going to do? Vote for Huckabee? In the end I think that this will tarnish Obama's message of hope and change. The image of Obama and Warren standing side by side will not soon be forgotten by many democrats. It reminds us too much of Bush.

It's just amazing how shallow everyone's support is. The great hope, and with one ambiguous gesture, all faith is gone. It reflects worse on you.
  • ChrisSF · 11 months ago
Are you kidding me with this? Are you saying you'd be just fine with it if Obama invited a person to share a place of honor at the inauguration who believed that your romantic relationship was just like pedophilia and incest?

    Ambiguous gesture my ass, Paul.

That you can't figure out why this is an issue ultimately reflects the worst on you. You can't see outside your own needs and interests.

And you can't figure out that a man who compares me to a pedophile is a problem?

In 1 corinthians 9-11 It tells us that homosexuals will not enter into the kingdom of heaven. And in Romans 1:24-36 Gods Wrath Against Mankind

Romans 1:26-27 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 in the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Acts 2:38 Repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are afar off for as many as the Lord our God shall call.
