AMERICAblog: Even Google is cutting bonus cash this year

But are the execs getting their bonus? I suppose it's just a little better than not having a job, getting those phones? And the contract workers get nothing (maybe a pink slip later on).

I worked for 50 years, and the idea of "bonuses" only hit my area of work in the 90s. It's a relatively new concept that people have gotten used to, and many times used by some companies as a small bit of "profit sharing" to mitigate the company's taxes, although I never turned one down. I always saw it as giving people the small "raise" they should have had all year when they might have used it more wisely than an excuse to overspend at xmas.

    Heh!

As my present to myself this year, I got the dev version of the phone - totally unlocked (simcard, boot, etc.).

While it's definitely rough around the edges, it's still wonderful.

Those Google employees have a DREAM job. I've seen interviews with them. The perks they get are mind-boggling. I hope none of them are ungrateful for their circumstances.

I work for a major airline. In our growth hayday we would get $100.00 Eddie Bauer Certificates. Not the thousand these folks are use to, but a nice little extra that helped with buying a gift or two for friends or family. This year we received 2 round-trip positive space passes (as opposed to the normal standby passes we get as a benefit of working for an airline). Not much, but something that has value (being able to travel like a real person with a confirmed seat), and something that didn't take cash away from the company during these hard times. Sacrifices are sometimes hard to make, however in the current situation I am thankful to be working with health care benefits. God Bless All and hang in there.
