Visualize a country where the president puts national interest above “personal bravado” . . . Oh, good grief! I find myself visualizing Pakistan instead of the United States.

Dubya would run away to Paraguay the minute the procedure came on to the floor .... he knows he is guilty and has always been a total coward. Let's go Pelosi .... the decision is not yours alone, you are supposed to be speaking in behalf of the people.

our failure to impeach will lead to future republican presidents being even more dictatorial than Bush was

Musharraf quit not because of honor but because he was cornered. Had he not resigned he would have been impeached within the week and then possibly criminal indictments would have come down.
In order to keep grip on power illegally he sacked and arrested Supreme Court judges - a power that did not vest with him, held the country hostage to political turmoil for over a year, but nothing could save him in the end. Let this be a lesson to all dictators (and would be dictators) that democracy prevails in the end, Thank God for that.
The sad part in this whole episode is the role of Bush Administration. Even though Musharraf was despised by a vast majority of Pakistanis, Bush Administration supported him and his illegal and unconstitutional actions. So much so that Condi Rice blessed his action to remove Supreme Court judges unconstitutionally, which turned public opinion of a vast majority of moderate Pakistanis against the U.S.
In February 2008 general elections, his party was trounced but the Bush Administration sent emissaries to Pakistan to ask the democratically elected Government not to get rid of him. In the end, they were not able to protect Musharraf. What an abject foreign policy failure for the Bush Administration.
