    http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/13001 yahoo's # 2 story right now.

    Scholars Question Palin....
“The first thing that hits me,” said Stephen Hess of the Brookings Institution," is that it suggests that John McCain is a gambler. This is a high roller decision.”

“The next thing you have to ask yourself: Is it worrisome to have a gambler in the Oval Office? That’s an important question," he said, “perhaps more important than anything else today.”

Democratic Operatives better be sure to hammer her lack of experience and the potential trouble she is in.
  • JerseyGuy · 1 year ago
One thing that I think everyone is missing on this, John, is that she was elected in an election in which less than 250,000 votes were cast and, of those, she received a few more than 114,000. It takes more than that to be elected mayor of most small cities.

  • Lolis · 1 year ago
I don't think Democrats should focus on her lack of experience, the media will do that.

They should just mention her extreme positions on abortion, the fact that she doesn't think humans cause climate change, and she was for the bridge to nowhere before she was against it. It blows my mind that she is an acceptable pick given her ongoing abuse of power investigation.

There is even an interesting diary at Daily Kos that Palin may not have birthed her baby. She didn't tell anyone until she was 7 months and nobody could tell she was pregnant. I don't know if this is true but the fact that this story is out there is bad news for the Republicans.

Wowza ... a whole lot of speculation and fun, but not enough hard evidence. (Aside from the fact that she showed AMAZINGLY POOR JUDGEMENT in the health of her child. Anyone willing to wait that long will leaking amniotic fluid should be taking in on fetus endangerment. She should have cancelled her speech and gone to an ER immediately -- not finish the speech, fly 8 hours back to Alaska and then drive 45 min to a remote hospital.)
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
I wonder if this is reliable information?
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
Palin kept her child (Bristol) home from school for months due to the fact that she had Mono.

Who in the Hell misses school for months with Mono?

Bristol returned to school well after the Baby's birth.

Mommy really stayed in the same house while she was pregnant?

    Somethin' ain't right.
  • unpoetaloco · 1 year ago
I agree. This woman has crazy written all over her. Someone said she's a Pentecostal. Is that right? If that's true, she's one generation removed from worshiping snakes. No wonder the religious right is orgasmic. She's a friggin' holy-roller. She's probably the first person in her family to wear store-bought clothes. Although the suit she wore in Ohio looked like she might have sewn it herself.
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
Well, I try to be an equally offensive to everyone, but I have nothing against Pentecostals or snake-handlers.

However, she strikes me as a Goddess of greed.

She did wear black to her homecoming and hugged McCain like he had a weird odor about him.
  • unpoetaloco · 1 year ago
This is McCain's Harriet Miers moment. It shows just exactly how out-of-touch (crazy) he is. Bush really thought Harriet Miers was qualified to be a Supreme Court justice. If McCain thinks Palin, the hockey mom beauty queen, is ready to be VP, he is even crazier than George Bush.

McCain entered the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis.
He graduated a low class rank (894 of 899)

Palin holds a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism from the University of Idaho with a minor in political science.

Obama...A graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he served as president of the Harvard Law Review.

Biden graduated from Archmere Academy in Claymont, Delaware[3] and, in 1965, from the University of Delaware in Newark,[5] where he double-majored in history and political science.[3] He went on to receive his J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law in 1968, and was admitted to the Delaware Bar in 1969.

Time for some intelligence in the White House. That would be change !!

    Obama/Biden 08 !!!!!!

It would be so refreshing to see a scholar at the helm. The Republicans, ever since Ray-gun, have lowered the standards of intellectual aptitude. I'd like to see the bar raised high again.

Don't underestimate the suspicion and disdain that a lot of Americans have for 'college educated' folk. I served a church once where it was made very clear to me by a parishioner that they were not impressed by the certificates and diplomas on my office wall. Palin is potentially dangerous precisely because she is not an insider, not as well educated as other candidates. The 'she's just like us' vote got us George Bush, and is still operative.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
I'm in full agreement with you on this one. This has been a challenge for the Democrates for the last forty years. On the other hand, it's the very nature of gen-x and gen-y to question the status quo of things.

The Republicans work the masses with ease, because they know a lesser-educated group is moved by emotional issues. Really, it's a fascinating study I'm sure you'll agree.

"I'll keep your children safe; We'll smoke em out; I'm the original Maverick; I won't raise your taxes; etc. These one-liners work wonders. It's like watching lambs for the slaughter.
  • jackofallthumbs · 1 year ago
I agree as well. And if you’re shaking your head, remember one thing. having Palin on the ticket has NOTHING to do with attracting politically attuned people of ANY political persuasion. Those people (probably including you) can tick off seven reasons why she is hardly the best choice to be a heartbeat away from the presidency. Agreed. But this is about the HUGE chunk of voters that will be attracted to the choice. Attracted enough to turn off ‘American Idol’ or NASCAR or whatever, at least long enough to say ’she’s like me’. Sound familiar? (Hint: think ‘W’). And if you REALLY think about it, you’ll realize that their haphazard vote counts for even more than yours, since they likely live in a rural but perhaps critically important state that is disproportionally rewarded in the electoral college system. (For example, each vote in Wyoming is worth SEVEN votes in California in terms of the electoral votes awarded.)
  • vkobaya · 1 year ago
Time for some intelligence in the White House.

Republicans regard intelligence as a negative qualification. Fact is Bush's dog, Barney, can beat the entire Republican Party together at chess, checkers and Chinese checkers 10 times out of 10. But in order to get to live at the White House, he plays modestly never beats them too badly and loses 50% of the time.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
Good news, but the numbers could be higher for the number of people who don't feel she could lead if the situation arose. I still can't believer this is happening.
  • scytherius · 1 year ago
Just give it time. And, polls do NOT take into account the radical changes in dynamics since 2004. They still use 2004 paradigms. That is why you saw reasonably close polls in the 3 special elections that turned into blowouts.

What disturbs me is that 39 percent of the people in the poll think she's prepared to lead the country. Based on fucking what?

Miss Congeniality sitting across the table from Vlad the Impaler or the Saudi Sleaze Gang? Trying to sort out the mess in Pakistan. So far, her way of dealing with tough situations has been to fire anyone who disagrees with her. You really can't do that in the international community.

My question is how far down will she go?
Not surprised she flopped; she is not in league with Clinton to say the least, and her attempt at connection with Clinton's supporters did not help. McCain's campaign is a high wire act without any wires!

sarah is the mother. they would not have had the daugher holding her brother at the announcement, they would have maintained the lie. the likelyhood of down is far greater after forty. i too would like to see something, a hurrican, face surgery, horrendous scandal. this however is foolish. a culdesac. a cliff.

Suggest you actually read it. A number of us have been working on this independently using reliable sources (at least as reliable as they get) and have come to similar conclusions. We've used widely available information such as Alaska press, pictures from Governor's web site (that has seen significant scrubbing in the last couple of days and Wiki (that has also undergone recent revison.

Uhn huh! Men like her better than women like her . Is that surprising??? Nope, because a lot of the Republican base is uneducated, beer swilling, NAS car fans, oh and the religious right nuts that have wet dreams. Just disgusting, honest to god, it is disgusting.

Don't worry. She'll just wow them when she visits other countries and says, :"geez, I didn't know you guys had running water. It's so nice to be able to see other parts of the world."

visits other countries and says, :"geez, I didn't know you guys had running water.

Nothing new to that! Bush still says that and you also notice he still doesn't believe they have flushing toilets, always takes his own porta-potty along with him.
  • jack_alexander · 1 year ago
I think picking this inexperienced person is a gimme. He knows he's going to lose, but it won't matter. Many of us on other forums have been discussing an 'October Surprise'. When one considers the Presidential proclamations, The Untiarian Govermental powers given to the Chimp, The Homeland Security Act, The Patriot Act, FEMA and all of those Halliburton built prisons that were assembled to imprison illegal immigrants one can only surmise that martial law, after a fake 9/11 type situation occurring we can only expect the worst.

The congress and courts shut down and the Nation Guard put into action to either control, kill, or imprison us. In the past two weeks they've only captured 660 illegal immigrants (far too few to fill the thousands of 'beds' in Halliburton folly), most of whom were forced to sign a statement that they were guilty of a felony, then be deported and never allowed to be back here again...

When they come to my door, I' m just going to grab the gun and put the muzzle to my head and tell them to shoot.

My point of view may be grim, but I've learned in life to always expect the worse and if something good does happen then one has a reason to celebrate. Right now I don't see any celebrations in the near future.

    Regards....Jack

    Hey, this is good.

Sarah brought up Hillary's name at a rally with McCain in Pennsylvania today (it was basically her same speech from yesterday) and, wouldn't you know it, Hillary's name was greeted with full-throated boos.

    Why?

She's trying to appeal to Hillary supporters, but her Fundie credentials are bringing out the true Hillary haters.

Guess McCain's people didn't think this thing all the way through, huh?

If Sarah Palin is so qualified and ready to be in the big office how come she did not have the balls to contest in the primaries like Hillary did. She is definitely not worthy of even mentioning Hillary in her speech. Republicans are just pathetic. SP should be home taking care of her sick downs syndrome child and not let her easy leap into the national scene outweigh her comittments to her children. BTW, if she is busy making babies how the heck does she get any 'real work' done

Is it me or did John McCain have his Viagra moment, was it love at first sight. For Pete's sake, he met this woman once, talked to her once and decided she is the 'one'. He has totally lost it, absolute desperation. How does a Columbia University and Harvard grad who studied and taught Constitutional law (Obama) compare with moose burger queen (Pal'in) who has a bachelor's degree from University of Idaho? Real difficult choice to make, uh? Wake up America, let us not allow airheads run us aground again! I had to compare Obama and Pal'in because McCain is a heartbeat away from having 'none' (he just turned 72) and she will be next in line to carry the torch?
  • billc · 1 year ago
I think the addition of an individual whose values are so well defined is a master stroke. She will complement as a formidable candidate for McCain. Obama probably has done as best he could, but has always been curiously lacking details for his promises. He did not get any bounce from the convention as hard as the media worked for him. And now, with this Palin announcement, the remaining air has just been sucked out of the room, and there has hardly been a mention from Obama/Biden. I DO think his chances would have been better with Hillary....but, what do I know?
  • gumbygirl · 1 year ago

This article confirms what I thought I'd heard--construction of the bridge to nowhere was canceled, but Sarah didn't send the money back. Will some reporter please ask McSame how that squares with his pledge to abolish all earmarks?
  • jackofallthumbs · 1 year ago
I will not trust polls on Palin any more than I will on Obama in the South. I spent more than twenty years seeing polls underestimating Jesse Helms strength because people wouldn't even tell a polster their true feelings. I think that many women will back Palin (a working mom) but tell polls otherwise.

In a bit of the rationale on my site:

Why do I fear Sarah Palin, a woman widely panned as a light-weight politician from a backwater state?

    * First, her selection immediately changed the subject from a phenomenal speech by Obama to a ‘what the…?’ pick by the opposition. All post-convention news coverage and speech accolades……gone.
    * Second, the re-appearance of a woman in the mix. And while I don’t want to overstate the ‘woman scorned’ aspect, the pre-eminent woman candidate was left hanging by one party and the other one offered an alternative. The result: there are women who will at least take a LONG look at Palin instead.
    * Third, the evangelical vote has now been re-awakened. They drifted off to sleep when Huckabee folded his tent, but now there’s Sarah, fiercely pro-life and devoutly religious.
    * Fourth, she brings home the Libertarians, (whose home planet is Alaska), who didn’t really want to waste their votes on Barr anyway, especially if it would help Obama.
    * Fifth, as a lifelong member of the NRA, she not only brings the sportsmen/women into the voting booth, but she bizarrely quiets the ‘weak on national security’ folks, probably because she can likely outshoot McCain and definitely Cheney. Go figure, but true.
    * Sixth, the entrance of a ‘people’s candidate’ into this race. The other three men are clearly professional politicians, while Palin, a ‘working mom’, has spent just two years as a governor, almost half of which while she was pregnant, with a wind-up swing for her previous child next to the governor’s desk.
    * Seventh, did I mention that unlike the other three, she can garner male votes even with the sound off on the television? Yeah, she’s beyond pretty - Julia Roberts runs for president. (When you combine ’six’ and ’seven’, I’m sure that Hollywood is already negotiating for the rights.)
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
You are assuming that the GOP can control the discourse well enough to sell all these points, I'm actually beginning to doubt that. From the start, she struck me as being a lightweight, but I figured the big plan was to completely control the media narrative on Palin and thus use her superficial-but-appealing story as her primary asset. Less than 24 hours and we are seeing a steady stream of Dems and Republicans openly questioning the soundness of the decision. The Dems need to make sure that discussion keeps going and whatever appeal she has will vaporize and McCain will look like the gimmicky old man he is.

The only hattip I can give is that they did manage to overshadow Obamas speech, but even that is shortlived once MCCain delivers his. At that point the inevitable comparisons will commence and the power of Obamas speech will again be front and center.

Patience is needed, and as long as the Dems try to control the narrative, which they seem to be doing, Palin will continue to be shown as the bust of a choice she was.
  • greymatter · 1 year ago
Why don't we start nominating 'American Idol' contestants and beauty pageants to be our leaders instead of those who struggle through life's unfair games and get to Columbia, Harvard and study and teach constitutional law. Is this a beauty (Sarah) and the beast (John) show or 'people who can get the job done show'?
Did any of you watch the clips on 'how do we beat the bitch' on you tube. This shows the profound disregard McCain has for women and how he does not mind exploiting 'ms alaska runner-up' to get his sorry ss in the white house. He puts himself first and then the country or else he would not make such a disastrous decision. I would have a lot of respect for Sarah if she went out campaigned and played hardball against men like Hillary did?
When asked by a female 'how do we beat the bitch' referring to Mrs Clinton, McCain stood like a goof ball and asked for a translation to that amidst laughter from the crowd and laughing himself. He also said ,'that is a good question' and these are the women he hopes to entice with bringing Ms Palin in, who by the way happens to be mother of 4 and grandmother of one

There is a lot of information out there, we do not have to listen to the 'pundits' who cram down our throats biased and mostly wrong information, especially when it comes to polls.
