I live here. -40 for about three weeks. Now its warm where I am but hell up there. At one time -- in the recent past -- the US was of the wealthiest nations, and this type of thing should have been an outrage. But if we pay attention to the financial news, more and more states, both red and blue, will be suffering similar fates. To put it very simply, the money is gone. All of it, including tax revenues. Municipalities will be hit hard, some of them even considering selling off valuable assets for short-term cash. And so while Sarah Palin is a loathsome woman and has many bad qualities, let us point the finger at the ultimate source: deregulation and crony capitalism.

I seriously doubt Alaska has been able to feed itself for some time. At least since transportation has allowed for the import of agriculture products -- and thus enabled a much larger population to grow than the state could support on fishing and whaling diets, alone.

sounds tough. i grew up in the midwest, and oh, man. the winters can be brutal. foot after foot of snow, 50 mile an hour winds, negative temps... and then before you know it, winter comes and it gets really bad.

It's not poor planning. They had a very poor salmon harvest last summer, and the winter has been much colder than expected. This is a Native village -- they do know how to plan, this was just a very bad year.

I also have the audio of the radio interview with Emmonak resident, Nick Tucker, whose letter sounded the alarm. Listening to the interview requires a box of tissues.
FYI--we Alaska blogs are trying to get help to these folks when the State INCLUDING Governor Palin's office, has put us off and offered no help (they were even downright snarky with one of our bloggers who called).
Our main goal is to try to help our fellow Alaskans. However, we're also pretty damn sick of the very-personal hits we're getting from our Governor as of late. It would be nice if the "anonymous blogosphere" could help this village when she wouldn't.
