AMERICAblog: For those promoting the "Dubai is the future" theory

Dubai's economy rests on a sort of indentured slave labor base.

Additionally, this sickening child slavery goes on there: http://www.gluckman.com/camelracing.html

Dubai is a farce. Your point is one of many that prove what a thin veil it is.

When in Rome, try not to act like ugly foreigners.

I can't imagine Big Dick and Lynne would want to have sex on a Dubai beach, so it won't be a deterrant for them.
  • lynchie · 1 year ago
Dick's heart would give out just at the sight of Lynne naked. Course she favors women after so many years with the "Dick" man. Every morning for breakfast he enjoys biting the heads of some young boys and shooting a few friends.

then again... they haven't arrested Michael Jackson yet... so if you're not having sex on a public beach, you might be okay.

Dubai, even though they try to seem like the DIsneyland for the rich is still ruled in a fashion most of us in the West would see as despotic. They have built a very pretty house of cards but it will take only one or two radical fundamentalists to bring it all down. Like many emerging countries with new wealth thay have a side show going, it looks good on the outside but shabby on the inside.

I puke everytime I hear the repubs talk about taxes driving away business. Business going backrupt because they have to help cover health care. Captial gains taxes cause companies to move jobs overseas. Never a word about companies who pay no taxes in this country. Executives who get rewarded for running companies into the ground.
Frankly I have a simple solution. Companies who continue to move jobs overseas will get no tax breaks, are not eligble for bail outs and I would change the law so that golden parachutes are taxed at a totally different level since that money was garnered from laying off workers and side stepping paying taxes.
Not a single job can be cited in Regan's trickle down horse shit. It is like Clean Coal Electricity. That is the second biggest crock of shit since trickle down that was ever articulated. In fact I would credit that to someone like David Frum. It has the right ring to it. Coal energy produces more radiation than Nuclear fuel. No one will make it clean because they would have to invest in scrubbers to clean up the smokestacks.
Any sorry to go off on a tangent. Yeah, move to Dubai, just don't expect any of the things that being based in the U.S. offers.

Excellent post lynchie. We're in a whole world of shi* because the Republicans keep taking money out of the economy. Cut takes here, cut government programs there, keep handing out capital gains taxes, reward corporations for shipping jobs overseas and promise even more tax breaks.

The dumb-asses have removed damn near every dollar of liquid cash from the economy. And, they love to deficit spend! That's why we have to keep borrowing money from third world countries--there's no money coming in!

Spend and tax, spend and tax, spend and tax. I wish the blue collar worker would wake up. There's nothing wrong with being taxed fairly--with programs and representation to justify it.

We got no blood (money) running through the economy (body).

The future can be a complete embrace of 15th century ideals with space age technology. We call it retro-futurism. Indentured slave labor isn't so bad if you get to build a giant hotel shaped like a sail and a fake island shaped like a palm tree.

I have always had a disdain for the concept of Dubai. Let me explain: They have a population of around a million people, less than any second teir city in America. The Prince finances and builds all of these buildings, most of which are designed by Chicago archtiecture firms. Their culture and society simply copies. It is a cardboard city. There is no thriving middle class that jumps on a train and goes to work in those buildings. They are for the most part un occupied. Dubai is a farce. Their human rights are 100 years behind the west. And if you are gay, watch out, you are a criminal.

Dubai represents that last breath of the big oil era....and it's going out in vainglorious style.

I will NEVER visit that stink hole.

Low taxes, minimal business regulation and draconian social laws for the 'little people' (you can bet the powerful get away with anything).

    Sounds like a Republican's paradise.

There is more to this story than is being discussed here. The couple was caught having sex on the beach and were let off with a warning. When the cop came back later the couple was still on the beach and they were having sex AGAIN. When the cop "interrupted" them the woman started screaming at him and that's when they got arrested. At the time both of them claimed that they were so drunk they couldn't remember their sexual encounter; now they claim they didn't have sex.

I hate to burst your bubble folks, but if you got caught having sex on a beach in the United States it is VERY unlikely that you would be let off with a warning. As for screaming at a cop- if you want to get arrested in the US just scream at a cop when he tells you to leave the premises. I guarantee you will be in handcuffs in less than 60 seconds. The fact that they didn't have the good sense to finish their drunken sex in a room is no one's fault but their own. Instead of blaming the government of Dubai perhaps these two individuals should take the opportunity of three months in a Dubai jail to contemplate the mistake they've made and begin the process of recovering from the alcohol addiction that they are both clearly afflicted with.

I heard the same thing on NPR. While I detest the puritanical and hypocritical governments that are or border upon theocracies, I also detest drunken tourists, especially Brits, who think that they can do whatever they want wherever they want. Several years ago, I was spending some time in Crete and all of the British tourists were expelled from the island due to drunkenness and rowdy behavior.
