Congrats on your students! There used to be a time when Emma Lazrus' poem had meaning and weight in America..."Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore..." But the modern GOP has done all it can to divide and conquer us. Unless you are Navajo, or Sioux, or other tribe...WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS.

I read that "native" indians actually may have come over the Bering Strait from Siberia.
WASHINGTON (AFP) — A US genetic study bolsters claims that Native Americans are descended from one migrant group that crossed a lost land link from modern Siberia to Alaska -- not waves of arrivals from Asia, as rival theories say.
The new study by the University of Michigan, published Monday, examined genes of indigenous people from North to South America and from two Siberian groups, the university said in a report introducing the research.
Analysis found one unique genetic variant widespread across both the northern and southern American continents -- suggesting that all Native Americans were descended from a single group, not various ones as the rival theory holds.
This variant "has not been found in genetic studies of people elsewhere in the world except eastern Siberia," the report said.
One of our students is taking her citizenship test in two weeks. Very exciting. Most of the rest have green cards. Just really, good decent people. Not to be too corny, but they're inspiring.

One of my pet peeves is how anyone can be civil to wingnuts who voted for bush twice? They don't deserve a civil response. It should be impressed upon them why they're despised for good reason. A time for reasoned argument was ended back in 2000 and has only grown over the subsequent years. It is actually detrimental to correcting the state of this country. They've given you 8 years of horror and the destruction of your country that will never be fixed and you believe they should have a civil response?

I work with a couple guys who deeply regret voting for Bush in 2004, but I still give them shit for it every chance I get.
I usually refer to Bush as "your boy" when talking to them, and that's enough to to get them going.
"He's Not My Boy!!! I fucked up!!! OK????"

Maybe now you can go down South and teach basic English to some Bush Voters.

I will just as soon curse them out as look at them. Because you take them seriously in response, they feel absolutely no guilt for the last 8 years of horror and the end of your birthright to be proud to be an American and that of your children from now on and the worsening economic crisis. The police state. They don't see anything wrong or especially how they might be culpable.
It's supernaturally strange to me how you don't see what's coming.

The die-hard republicans are going to be like the German citizens touring the concentration camps after the war claiming "We didn't know".

Well, at least the the world had never really experienced it prior to the Nazis so the Germans had something of an excuse. What's the people's excuse here? They have no excuse.

I feel bad for one of the ex-Bush voters I work with.
He has a kid with a brain tumor who will likely have to have a lifetime of MRIs and Chemo.
He said he learned the error of his way while going to different Children's Hospitals over the past couple years.
He says he has good benefits and knows how to navigate the system, but many other kids in his daughters condition would be dead by now, which has made him question the Repubs "live and let die" philosophy..
That and global warming have been kind of sobering to him.

Well under the "universal health coverage plan the kid will have to hold on for 2 years to get an MRI. And very likely the Chemo meds will be denied due to lack of stocks...

it does inspire you to see the gleam in their eyes and the hope that we had at one time. the republicans are thieves of hope and freedom. oy vey. what a country. i just wish that they would start impeachment hearings on november 5. the day after obama wins.

McCain doesn't work weekends.
Since effectively capturing the Republican nomination when Mitt Romney dropped out of the race on Feb. 7, John McCain has held just one public campaign event on a weekend.
Instead, after workweeks full of fundraisers, town hall meetings and interviews, McCain has been, in campaign parlance, “down” on nearly every Saturday or Sunday for 20 weeks, largely sequestered away from the news media.
I'm no immigrant, my ancestors have been here for generations. And I'm simply not taking the blame for what happened in the colonial past or beyond. I worked for years for civil rights for descendants of slaves to get their rights, only codified in the second half of the 20th century, and for many of whom they still don't exist. The black community, all the poor and working class in this country are continually being shoved aside as jobs are outsourced and illegal immigrants are hired to replace them in many, many areas. For chrissakes, Americans are suffering from job losses, poor housing, lack of medical care, kids are dropping out of schools like flies because their families are doing poorly--and nobody seems to care about them as much as they do for people who come into this country illegally, instead, taking potshots at "rednecks", southerners, and "crackers" from the midwest. If people like me had had the opportunity to attend college years ago, instead of trying to return in their mid-years with no resulting tangible rewards for doing so, there wouldn't be such resentment. And when millions of American parents have to scratch up loans and such for their own kids to attend college, if possible at all, while states are providing it free or nearly free for illegal immigrants, it is just as frustrating.
So many people born in this country have worked 40, 50 years to qualify for their SS, only to see people coming into this country illegally qualifying for some type of SS and medical assistance without having to lift a finger.
As long as this situation is ignored, the resentment builds. The US simply cannot absorb the poor, uneducated, unskilled and/or program dependent people who have, and continue to come into this country as such programs are cut repeatedly, some of which will never be reinstated or will be strained beyond their limit. And I haven't begun to start on the illegal crooks and thugs that now control criminal activities in many places, such as the 26 members of MS13 who were arrested in Charlotte, NC the other day, being charged with many crimes, including murder, and in some cases, actually controlling work activity on construction sites and overseeing criminal activity in a number of neighborhoods.. Do you really believe this is a good development? I sure don't.
Why have a sovereign US with no border control? It might as well be opened to the world to let in every single person who can get to the US, without papers, without visas, without any documents whatsoever. You may wish for anarchy, but I certainly don't.
And all of this has been allowed without regard to US laws in the last 8 years--at the behest of the corporatocracy and the people in DC they control.

Good morning. Perhaps all our ancestors were immigrants (mine are from Ireland [1632], Sotland [1716] and eastern Siberia [circa 30,000 B.C.] but we are not immigrants. We live here.
The point of the Hiawatha Belt (my new logo) is that we all live together in the same longhouse. The Hiawatha Belt memorializes a pre-European decision of five eastern tribes to form a confederation and work together. It remains a rallying point of tribal remnants for everyone, not just the indigenous peoples.
You live in North America, you're North American. It's that easy.
Congratulation to the newly arrived language students.
