Looking bad for Franken. 120 votes with 36% of the recount remaining. Too bad.

Wonderful color. The lines are not quite textbook symmetrical but it could be tthat the stalk is aging and recessant traits are surfacing. Then again, it might be going feral! Beware the mutating paphs :-)

Not an orchid, but we had a Stapelia start blooming yesterday. I'm not sure what species it is but my husband could tell you. They are also known as a carrion flower. They are absolutely stunning when they bloom and you can enjoy them for about one day but after that.....watch out.

Needless to say, we cut the flower off and put it in water and it is now on our back deck.

    scottinsf,

Which of these is like your Stapelia?

It's a Stapelia gigantea. Sometimes also called a Stapelia nobilis. Very stinky.

We gave a cutting to a friend in SoCal years ago. He can grow them outside there. He sent us a video one time of his blooming and the center of one of the flowers was just crawling with maggots. It was awesome!

We also have a Stapelia flavopurpurea but it has yet to bloom. Thanks for the link to that Flickr page mirth. Those are amazing photographs.

As far as orchids go, we've got some run-of-the-mill Paph getting ready to bloom and some generic grocery store Oncidiums currently blooming. Couldn't tell you what kind though.

Maybe it isn't perfect, but it still delights with beauty.

Orchid blogging... One of the best things on Friday evenings at AmericaBlog...

    Nice change of pace.

    Thanks, John.

Still trying to see the beauty in Orchids, I just have no green thumb, all my flowers or plants that I get die what I assume is a slow and painful death.

O/T did Franken lose the re-count?

Glue some fake eyes..the wobbly kind...to the top two petals....that would make it look awesome!! You can get the glue-on eyes at any craft store (...this makes me crack up also b/c of the Chrisotpher Walken SNL skit he did) It is a beautiful plant!

    That would be hilarious! :-)

But this is way pretty, I love the Orchid Blogging. I do well with my outside plants, but growing stuff inside, I can just never seem to get the hang of it. I love seeing when someone can. Great job John!
