AMERICAblog: Front page Washington Post: McCain is lying about Obama

Maybe giving Downie the heave-ho (happy retirement, Len!) means the WaPo can begin to get its reputation back. This is encouraging...

I think Don Graham has to hang it up before we see any real changes.

John, I noticed that too this morning.....right on the front page of the Post. And the first paragraph is actually one big compound sentence...with the last 7 words "no evidence that the charge is true"
Usually those last 7 words are buried somewhere in the 12 paragraph on page A17 of the story.
John Aravosis

You're right. Usually it would be a story focusing on the controversy and presenting both sides so that the reader could decide for themselves whether the libel is true, thus helping it become true.

None of us needs to buy into the myth that McCain has always been a clean campaigner, a fair fighter, etc. He's never in his privileged existence ever had a serious challenger. He waltzed into Arizona politics on the "war hee-ro-victim of the nasty Gooks" mythology (and a rich second wife's deep pockets), and now that he's got a fight, he devolves to Rovean ratfucking to get traction.

MSTIM just said "the McCain campaign is comfortable with Obama being a bling dad NBA star"...Interesting how Steve Schmidt's Paris Hilton comparison has turned very plainly/overtly racist... The corporate media just wants to know 'who dis neegah think he is?'...
John Aravosis

Where did you get that from?

In Morning Joe...A guest said it...round-headed younger white fellow who has guested before...maybe New Yorker, maybe...Anyway I think it was in the 8:30am half hour maybe the 8 to 8:30...I DVR it to minimized Joe exposure...The show needs Dali as a guest...The Dali Museum is in Florida so the surrealist and Joe could get along famously...

The NYT's lead editorial today, coincidentally?, suggests that someone there has also grown a pair to take on McCain's bullshit.
John Aravosis

Maybe, but the Times has never been shy about taking on the GOP. They're one of the few outlets that has.
slappymagoo

Slightly off-topic, but I wish it would be discussed more...
Now, OF COURSE, the GOP is going to say or do anything to win, as always. They think "scruples" is a sissy French baked good. And every election year, the attacks always seem to include calling the Dem candidate anti-American, some kind of traitor, and especially post 9/11, a terrorist sympathizer who hates the troops.
I get why they do it. I hate it, I think they're a bunch of p***ies for doing it, but I get it.
But the indies. The mods. The supposed "free-thinkers" in our society who believe they're making informed decisions about their choice for president, based on hard evidence from the campaigns and the media...WHY THE F*** DO SO MANY OF YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP?
The Democratic Party has had more than it's share of missteps, but are YOU so stupid to think WE'RE so stupid, that we'd deliberately choose someone to represent our party that doesn't have the best interest of the country at heart? That we'd get a guy who's made anti-American statements, pro-terrorist statements, done anything that would jeopardize our chances of taking back the White House, and say "oh, yeah, THAT'S our guy?"
Despite how inept we often are, we really do want to take back the White House, you know. Maybe, while the MSM and GOP keep insisting that Obama is too naive/untested/uppity/arrogant/elitist/fascist/extremist, you could take a second to wonder if perhaps they have a vested interest in you believing their hoo-hah? While you're at it, you can wonder why they're spending so much time trying to tear the Dem Candidate down while hardly discussing, in any detail what makes the GOP candidate so worthwhile, aside from of course being a war hero?

the only advantage McCain had, aside from his pigmentation, was that straight-talker reputation with the press. to get an idea how self-destructive these attacks have been, imagine if journalists had been present when swift-boat commander john kerry was getting shot up in vietnam. journalists don't mind passing along smears unless their own self-worth is challenged in the process.

Is it possible that the press is starting to realize that a good part of the public is on to them? It seems as if they are closing the barn door after the horse is gone, but I guess it's more than they have been doing in the last 8 years or so.

If they had their ideas and commentary wouldn't be the two or three weeks behind net chatter that it currently is... When aren't the old analog webs and their bastard children teasing some youtube video using the relatively web-aged descriptor, "viral"??? It's like the Pullman Company pushing air travel.

McCain's cuddly playmates in the press are slowly awaking from their lover's spell. This article is just one among many zeroing in on the McCain metamorphosis. Read more. http://www.tagg-lines.com/2008/07/positively-ne...

followed your link to the BusinessWeek article and read this:
"What the McCain campaign doesn’t want people to know, according to one GOP strategist I spoke with over the weekend, is that they had an ad script ready to go if Obama had visited the wounded troops saying that Obama was...wait for it...using wounded troops as campaign props. So, no matter which way Obama turned, McCain had an Obama bashing ad ready to launch..."

It is very disappointing to see McCain become just another wicked Republican. He is losing all respect, and dignity, by turning to Rovian politics. He, of all people, should know what it is like to be attacked and smeared, because he was a victim of GOP lies and attacks when he ran against Bush.
His desperation, has made him lie and attack, and it does not look good for a veteran of his stature to sink to low class behavior.
lynchie

If he can't remember what he said yesterday, he sure as hell can't remember what Bush did to him 4 years ago.

In addition what stature are you referring to. This man has missed 400 votes going back to January of 2007. there is no stature when you don't do your job.

Will someone please give Harry Reed his balls back? When confronted with the indictment of the Senator from Alaska he says "Its a sad day". What a pu**y. This is our leader??? He should blatantly be planting the assumption of guilt and tying it directly to the Republican party--he has a media platform...why the Hell not use it???

John, you say: "The bigger question is why McCain has adopted this strategy of outright lying about Obama, but even more, trying to label Obama as basically un-American."
i would suggest that that has been the GOP meme re: Democratic presidential candidates for the past 3 election cycles. in some way they have tried to cast the Dem candidate as "not one of us" as not really loving America. McCain is just not as good at it, and not as subtle.
TheOriginalLiz
That's a good point about his lack of subtlety. GOP allegations have always been unadulterated BS, they've just been presented better than they are being presented currently.
Is McCain being set up to lose the election, so that the unpopular decisions necessary to put the country back on track reflect on the dems and not the GOP? Is the GOP willing to lose one election for the long-term goal of solidifying their hold on the country?

Bush/Cheney lives are much less certain with Obama in the WH. I don't think we've seen the worst of what they have done yet. Obama's campaign comment about not going after Bush may have been just to calm them(maybe not). But they would feel much more comfortable with McCain.

Now Obama is wanting the government to pay reparations to Native Americans and African Americans. Can we just add the cost to the gasoline tax and be done with it? Hillary is starting to look better and better as a candidate. Paragraph 5:
I don't interpret "deeds" as taxes, but rather land they were screwed out of.

"When Obama walked on stage at the McCormick Center, many journalists in the audience leapt to their feet and applauded enthusiastically after being told not to do so. During a two-minute break halfway through the event, which was broadcast live on CNN, journalists ran to the stage to snap photos of Obama."

I find Mrs Greenspan's recent turnaround (flip-flop?!) a real shocker. Perhaps her husband sees the writing on the wall and has advised her to get in sync with the winning side, despite the standing orders from her corporate bosses.
"Throughout his life John McCain has held himself to the highest standards and he will continue to run a respectful campaign based on the issues."

There might be some truth where reporters cover for the other reporters. Its like doctors. Doctors are afraid to snitch on their bad doctors. It doesn't make it right but they all do it. Mrs Greenspan for a change stood up for what happened. It is refreshing for a change to see that not all the reporters are fawning over McCain.

The story of Obama's cancellation was reported by several media outlets prior to being used by McCain. The fact that Juliet Eilperin of the Washington Post (and Huffington Post blogger) decided to smear him for going after a clear misjudgment on Obama's part, will not help Obama save face to the soldiers that he snubbed. Like it or not, Obama messed up and McCain is going to take advantage of it. Regardless of the true reasons for missing the trip, it was reported the first day that Obama skipped out on visiting wounded American soldiers because he couldn't take a camera crew with him. The soldiers, the people who actually matter in this ordeal are the ones that feel Obama isn't worthy of representing them and being their Commander in Chief for worrying about campaigning instead of visiting soldiers.
