Things Are Looking Up [Byron York]
In the last Gallup poll of his presidency, George W. Bush's job approval rating is 34 percent, with 61 percent disapproval. The 34 percent approval figure is the highest for Bush in a year

Aside from the usual brain-dead idiots who would approve of him if he strangled a puppy and a toddler on the White House lawn in front of TV cameras, I think his approval rating has marginally improved because a few of the people polled assumed the question meant "Do you approve of Bush finally leaving office in six days?".

What scares me is that now we have a smart, articulate guy, who's willing to follow many of the same policies. And, worse yet, I voted for this one.
The whole system needs real change. Otherwise, it may not matter who the figurehead is. We need to take our country back from all of them, while we still can. .

hmm...i guess having sex with your intern in your home as your wife and daughter sleep upstairs is what the American people value in their president. Bush may not have done that, but he did torture some terrorists who were scheming to blow us up. The bastard! How dare he?!?!?
SouthernYankee
Well the difference with Clinton is he lied about having sex with a 21 YR OLD. That was a personal matter but the republicans had to play gotcha because they hated the Clintons so much. Bush lied on Iraq and got over 4,000 american soldiers dead because he wanted to whip Saddam's ass. This president has destroyed this country because he hated to read important memo's. Like Pain (female Bush) neither of them had the curiosity about the world. Katrina was the biggest eye openner to americans. No I would have had Clinton who was playing patty cake with some intern who was of legal age than Bush who has to sleep at night knowing he sent soldiers to die in a country that did not bomb us.
SouthernYankee
By the way it wasn't up to the public. What was happening on in the Clintons marriage was their business. You can bet she knew her husband wasn't the one woman type. But that was between them not the world. But it backed fired on the republicans when they tried to impeach him. The europeans laughed at us.
RitornaVincitor

I've always thought part of the GOP impeachment effort against Clinton was rooted in their desire to even the score over Nixon. Of course Nixon resigned to avoid being impeached and removed from office, and then was pardoned by his VP, while Clinton was impeached by the GOP congress but not removed from office, and was pardoned by the American people as evidenced by his high approval rating. So instead of evening the score, the GOP just upped their frustration level, as evidenced by Joe's comments.
SouthernYankee

Well you may have a point. I dunno but you can bet that Nixon still comes off like a choir boy compared to Bush and company.

Getting a blow job is a much more horrible crime to anybody who bows down to an invisible clowd being I guess. Why don't you leave the trailer park and get yourself a job Joe? Oh yeah, there aren't any. Enjoy the unemployment, disability, or welfare you collect buddy, and tell your sister-wife, I said Hi.

I've come to realize that it next to impossible for conservatives to truly grasp that sex just isn't a bad thing to the rest of us, so if our President does something sexually inappropriate, it isn't the end of the world. And for the majority, torture can be a very bad thing, especially when we torture an entire country that didn't scheme to blow us up.

If we're going to have a strong middle class, and an educated, competitive, free and fair country, we have to do something about that 25-30%. Would be nice to be able to get it down to 10%.

Honestly, I think the uptick in his approval and the downswing in his disapproval has to do with the fact that a handful of people have mellowed in their opinions because he's leaving. I note his horrendous numbers in November, and think that's a more honest reflection of peoples' core feelings. The number now probably represents about as good as his "legacy" is going to get, no matter how many gushing books Karl Rove writes.

mikeyDe

The Bush upswing can be attributed to greater optimism. People are willing to let some things go because they're looking forward to a new beginning. When Nixon went down, we had only Ford to look forward to (what a disaster he was). I hope Obama fares better than Ford. So far, I'm not impressed. He has appointed too many from the old Bush-Clinton guard in positions that count.

None of this is surprising in the country where one-fifth of the people can't find their own country on a map. An overwhelming percentage believe that angels fly around pushing them out of the paths of oncoming cars and helping them buy lottery tickets. More than half think that there is a god who plays chess with human lives and who really gives a shit whether East Bumfuck High School wins the Friday night football game -- or will if they just squint their eyes hard enough and say enough prayers whille holding hands.

As bad as he was, Nixon was a far better President than Bush, who will surely go down as the worst ever. So I guess the fact that Bush has a higher approval rating than Nixon indicates that Republicans have lower standards than they used to.

Well at least there's one part of the legacy Bush can point to with pride. "At least I wasn't as despised as Nixon." Walk tall, George, that's mighty impressive territory. Though really America, what's a man gotta do to be less popular than Nixon? Because Bush did it all and he's still 10 points in the clear. Are we only really outraged by burglary?
I think the Ollie North effect is still in evidence. If you just stand there looking dumb and sticking to your guns no matter how wrong, a significant percentage of Republicans will find it admirable. Kind of, "Yeah, they called me stupid too. They said I was a Neanderthal, but that can't be so because evolution doesn't exist."
Rufus

Nixon less popular? Don't think so -- people wanted Nixon in jail; people today want Bush jailed, waterboarded, and then with the resulting waterboarding confession, strung up, drawn and quartered, ground up, and sprinkled in the rose garden outside the Oval Office. People hated Nixon. With Bush, it's much more intense.

Hi Everyone,
In a few days our nation's leader will be leaving office. Already many while appearing to exercise their right to free speech are doing something very wrong. They are deliberately associating with the memory of an honorable man, characterizations aimed at shaping how history remembers him. Why not let time do that? Why not be honorable Americans and recognize that now is the time to let a man of honor leave with honor. He embodies much of what we are. And no matter what we might think about what role privilege might have had in him reaching the office. There is much of the "regular' American in him and we can all be proud of him for having lived the dream.
More careful analysis will show a lot what President Bush did in office that others might not have had the courage to do to save this country's 'soul'. He is the first to admit his mistakes. Let's not use these to ignore his accomplishments. Those motivated to the negative speech that has attempted to get headlines are showing a trend that is disturbing, that of deliberately destroying an image, or of demanding that someone be made a villain. Also, as a people who have for a long time led the way in the world, let's tell the world that we are a civilized people that exercise our rights when it matters but also know to show respect and leave a man with his honor when it matters. How we treat our outgoing leader reflects more on us than we seem to remember.
We stand to gain nothing from distroying our leader's image and stand to loose our own image in the eyes of the world. I am hoping that many will make themselves heard in the coming weeks that want to do their part for President Bush to leave with honor and for all of America to remember many reasons to be proud of him.
