AMERICAblog: George Will: "John McCain showed his personality this week and made some of us fearful."

Back to John McCain and the huge news he is tied into Fannie Mae. I just saw his response to the huge scandal on his interview on CNN. Think about it. Its classic McCain. He tries to get out in front by stating, yes he made a mistake but its all fixed now and everyone should reward him for being honest. I'm sorry but you can't keep showing you have HORRIBLE JUDGMENT and get rewarded for it. Sooner or later, after all the many scandals it should be noted there is something horribly wrong with your character. I hope Americans aren't stupid enough to buy McCain's latest cathartic "Aha! I was wrong, and will fix it!" bullshit. Besides, the very least he can do is PUBLICALLY apologize for his attacks on Barack Obama when its proven he has been even MORE TIED to Fannie Mae. Until then, he needs to stop with the angry rants about Obama, and stop lecturing us. He keeps saying Obama needs to stop with the lectures. Well, the same goes for him. He is the one who has been lecturing Obama and the American people like an angry old man! I'm sick to death of his lectures.

It's what he learned at the Naval Academy: mess up, 'fess up, get your demerits, take it like a man, then claim you're reformed, and move on. Clean slate, graduate.

McCain camp would respond: George Will is a bowtied Georgetown Brie and Chablis elitist. Real, normal Americans don't care what he thinks--they know in their gut that McCain, a brave war hero and POW, and Sarah, a courageous maverick who takes on the Old Boy network, are the best leaders for America!

A friend aged 80 and I aged 75, although neither of us look our age, of course, both agree that McCain's age should be a front and center issue. I think polling of the elderly would produce the same majority opinion. We're too aware of the effects of aging to feel offended when it is pointed out that someone is simply too old to be president, too forgetful, too easily confused, too addled. Polling shows that more people are prejudiced against the old than against blacks, right? Obama should hit the age issue!

I agree that many older people beyond 70 of age are mentally and physically able to handle any position in real life. But there are many people beyond the age of 70 that show signs of forgetting whatever happened the previous day. This is the case with McCain. He show no recollection of something he said the previous day. It's like he has early sign of Alzheimer's disease. He really should be checked with several doctors, before the election. We, the people, have the right to know whether we will vote for somebody that only will last for 1 month, and then we will have Palin, which is absolutely not ready for the Presidency, except if Cheney will be the VP again. But then we definitely have a Bush 3rd term.

How's that for a gift for Obama? McCain is sooooooooo on my last nerve! His final blow to his own demise was his Veep choice! It's a vicious threat to everyone in this country, and McCain must not win. Either he's deep into dementia, or he's committing a cruel act on all of us!
cowboyneok
The cruel part is the very idea he might now survive his Presidency. There is the chance any of us could wake up walk out our door and get hit by a bus. There is no promise we have tomorrow. For him to glibly pick such an incompetent newsreader for the position of Vice President is indeed CRUEL and just shows how much he actually puts country first. It was a blatant attempt to win the election with the idea if something happens to him, WHO CARES? He will be six feet under and the rest of us can just deal with her...

God, McCain was AWFULLY angry and erratic during snippets of that interview being played on MSNBC this morning. Awfully angry! Scary angry! What does he have to be angry about except for his OWN failures that have caused negative consequences? Jeesh, its not Americas fault he has screwed up so badly!

I'm guessing that as he struggles in the polls, he'll get angrier. Any bets on what the lead will be that sends him over the edge?

Wow, McShame is stumping right now live on MSNBC and totally saying EXACTLY OPPOSITE to what he was saying last week. The lemmings who are supporting him live act as if his statements about how bad the economy is, is totally in line with what he said most of last week. What a bunch of ignorant fools they are!

Don't Americans have a memory of longer than one day? McSame has done this so much! It is bad enough when he flip-flops from something he said last year, but when he flip-flops on something he said last WEEK? And too many Americans just nod and say, "Ah-yup -- I agree." BOTH TIMES. That proves their insanity, IMO.
Who said, "Insanity is trying the same failed policy again -- and expecting a different result"? I can't remember, but I know who falls for it -- waaaaay too many Americans.
cowboyneok

Twelve step programs talk about "Insanity is trying the same thing over and over and expecting different results." Maybe people need a twelve step program for being Republicans?
I agree with the vacant memory. I believe those who follow McSame are either lemmings or gnats.

Me too! It is SOOooooo relevant right now with the huge taxpayer bailout! Lets go back over how he was right in the middle of it, and then expects everyone to just forgive and forget. Well, this is just more of the same.

the obama campaign might not need it, except as a threat. they didn't need to push back much on the Raines smear, thanks to a few incensed Wall Street types who know how dirty Rick Davis is.

Obama should use EVERYTHING to smack McCain. Nothing should be off the table. He might be waiting for the most opportune time.

Sam also kept saying to Donna Brazile that Dems must just acquiece to the failed Decider's quickie no strings fix. "Horsehockey!", as Col. Potter used to say.
cowboyneok
Question: Who ever decided Donna Brazile should be someone to represent fighting progressives? I've never seen that woman do anything but smile, and play defense. She never takes it to Republicans. For instance, a Republican could apologize on-air for the $700 billion dollar bailout and Ms. Brazile would be sure to follow with, "Yes, Democrats are at fault, too!" She might have some political instinct but she does not ever get aggressive and debate Republicans. We need fighters to represent us. That is probably why she gets booked on so many shows. They know she is milque toast.

I agree....she needs to be far more aggressive........she is way too middle of the road.
cowboyneok

I get furious watching her. She just sits there and smiles, and whenever is forced to say anything its usually some half assed apology. She is not aggressive enough. I cringe whenever I see her in some debate with a Republican harpie like Bay Buchanon. They just wipe the floor with her... Maybe she needs a few testosterone injections to make her more aggressive?

I like Donna Brazile. She's calm, but dogged. She also holds her own against that thug Bennett on CNN, who likes to intimidate people.

The Divine Sarah was in The Villages yesterday. That's a city in Florida which started its existence as a senior-citizen community. It's overwhelmingly GOP, and naturally Sarah wowed them.
What's funny is that The Villages has one of the highest rates of STDs in all of Florida. All those old people go at it like rabbits, and they don't use condoms. And they're the family values party? Only if your family is named Jessop, Jeffs or Allred.
Evidently family values, like taxes, are only for the little people.

Obviously, "The Villages" isn't a Jewish community because she should scare the beejesus out of the Jewish population. Her pick amazed me because I immediately thought, "McShame just lost the South Florida jews." Then again, Palin does support Armageddon support nuclear war against anyone who wants to negotiate with Israel... Talk about someone willing to press the nuclear button! She is a Talibangelical and wouldn't think twice about pushing the nuke button.

It isn't. AFAIK, there isn't a synagogue or temple anywhere near The Villages.

A bit OT but those who watched Sec. Paulson pull a full Cochran yesterday on the yak shows must have noticed Paulson's used car pitch was punctuated with lots of dancing hands. Losing interest in Paulson's yammer I started watching the flighty hands. My freak gawker interest was piqued and riveted involuntarily to a strange mutant pinky finger on Paulson's left hand (it appeared camera right). It creeped me out nearly as much as the Money 911 pitch Paulson was trying to sell...Small, strange point, yes...I did say "a bit OT".

I don't think that anyone, at this point ,is going to change their minds on who they will vote for in November. People on either side are just blind to any further information about their candidate. Any other candidate, in recent memory, displaying what McCain displays on all fronts would be the loser in all polls but he isn't.

Polls are showing Catholics and uneducated, stupid people are not supporting Obama. Question: How do we appeal to that segment of the population to get them to vote for us? We have to think like them, and somehow appeal to them to win!

Media "tips" and predictions are some of my favorite forms of cheap teevee laughs. Loving the "money expert" tipsters advising people with falling portfolios to "add more money"...Kinda like advising Titanic passengers to "find another ship". Of course, my favorite corporate media tip remains the Thanksgiving chestnut about using oven mitts to remove the roast turkey from the oven. "Oven mitts!?!?!?!?!" "Why didn't I think of that?"
Aw, Johnny's making a drunken Irish joke...As a non-drinking Irishman, I hope he's using oven mitts.

I really think age is irrelevant. Would a McCain of 20 years ago be any different? Or has he always come to rash conclusions about things? Usually people mellow with age. Usually it's younger people that are hotheads. But Obama came across and cool, rational and thoughtful. He didn't shoot from the hip but sought advice from experts. The problem is the American public. When you're angry and scared you want action. Hopefully they've had enough of the cowboy antics and are looking for an alternative.

This week was the one that pushed them over the edge? What were they paying attention to for the past few months? McCain's been at least this incoherent and confused since Obama wrapped up the nomination.
Isn't it interesting that the usual pundits didn't give a rat's ass when average Americans were hurting (high gas prices, jobs sent overseas, etc.), but when THEY start hurting, they shriek like stuck pigs.
From Cokie (what a name for an elderly woman) to George Will ... to most of them -- when THEIR portfolios are in danger, they shriek: "Oh no! What about US?"
I just had to take a little time off to laugh. No, I don't want this to happen, but it WAS funny to see the higher-ups (who weren't CEO welfare queens) get hysterical.

Yeah, and I just heard Steve Forbes (who HATES TAXES) complaining that he hopes the Treasury pays a 'fair' price for the toxic debt they are taking off company balance sheets.........he said Merrill had to sell assets at 22 cents on the $ and he hopes the goverments (taxpayer money!!!) will pay more like 55 cents so as not to hurt the financials........ these people have no morals, no shame........

John, I just don't understand your admiration for Ben Smith and Politico. Today I read a heart-stopping headline about a poll in which Obama has all but lost his lead among women. "Poll shows that since McCain chose Palin as his running mate, Obama's commanding lead has vanished." The "poll" was conducted by some fly-by-night group, not a major pollster, called Lifetime Television/Every Woman Counts, questioned 534 women, and had a margin of error of 4.4. The only thing missing was to be told it was conducted in Irondale, ALA at the gates of Mother Angelica's monastery. I think this is irresponsible blogging.

Well, here's a counter poll. New SurveyUSA poll out in VA. Obama 51, McCain 45. Before the Palin pick Obama +6 among women, after Palin pick Obama +16 among women.

It drives me crazy that my wife has these people on the TV every Sunday morning. They always seem to be on the Republican side, with a mildly snide insider tone. So this is a big deal, that even the Steph. gang, especially Will, is "fearful." This Sunday I just happened to sleep in, however. I missed an historic television event.
