AMERICAblog: Gibbs: President stands behind incest/pedophilia brief
Gridlock
Incredible.
"I fully support repealing DOMA as long as someone else makes the push for it, but in the meantime I'm going to defend it using illogical and offensive language that you'd be more used to seeing coming out of Jerry Falwell's mouth, even though i'm under no obligation to do so. After that, I'll try to scramble around some and toss the faggots a meatless bone to get them to shut up, boy I hope it works."
the only way that could be better would be if it somehow incorporated the rainbow or something signifying LGBT. (i.e. wouldn't want to get grouped into the rush "i want the president to fail" limbaugh crowd).
i'm not photo-shop saavy enough to do it.

This is why I say we continue to shut off the flow of money to Democrats. Obama and his entire administration have proven themselves to be a bastion of hate, and our so-called friends in congress, even the gay ones, are afraid to say anything in our defense. To hell with all of them. I am giving my money to bloggers and local politicians that will truly help and care.

Sadly, it's become clear that Robert Gibbs is a clueless, homophobic pig.
fredndallas

You are SO right, Steve. Whenever I see him dodge a GLBT question, I can hear the sneer in his voice and just imagine the back slapping jock jerk homophobic derision that spews from his mouth at his very first "private moment" opportunity. He is as transparent as he is void of class and character.
He is no doubt a total reflection of his boss's values, attitudes and disposition. It is indelibly obvious that Barack Obama has a deep dysfunctional personal emotional issue with gay folks. I'm glad that it is getting exposed and is becoming inescapable. The President's ego is going to have to decide what to do. Unfortunately it appears that his arrogance is going to prevail.

I called the White House today about this and it was obvious they are getting lots of calls on it -- the person responding summed up my views correctly but using words she had clearly been given to use. I tried to call again in order to get a different number and it was busy from then on (tried for 20-30 min). Good sign. Also sent a message regarding how awful the DOMA brief was on whitehouse.gov Have sent an email to most of my contacts about calling and writing on this. We need to get lots of people moving!

There was a good idea in the previous thread: I called the DNC today and told them I was a lifelong Democrat, from four generations of Democrats and that today I'd be switching my registration to Independent.
Both for the continued inaction of gay rights, the disgusting action on the defense of DOMA, and the backpedalling on the public option on Healthcare.
"I'll become a Democrat again when Democratic politicians actually serve their constituents."

You're my therapist, right? You can understand my abandonment issues. I trusted him. He said he respected me. He understood me. I believed him, that shit. OK, OK I need to learn to control my anger impulses. That's what I'm paying you for, right? Anyway, it started out so good. He talked the talk, so I thought he would walk the walk in our relationship. Was I being too codependent? Tell me the truth. Yeah, it was an internet thing. I learned about him on the internet, so now I guess I realize that, deep down, it wasn't, like, really REAL, hmm kay? God, he was so great on our first nights out, he told me all about how vulnerable he was growing up because his dad abandoned him, and I got SO turned on when he talked about his dead mother. He idealized her. She raised him, and so I thought, yes, he understood ME, like no other guy ever had. Now I see he's so fucking unavailable, emotionally. That cool facade, yeah, it attracted me. But now I see it for the lack of emotional availability he will probably always have for me. Yes, yes, I am trying to deal with my anger issues . . . Time's up for this session? God, these hours are so goddam short.

What a freaking disaster! So we can expect no apology from Obama regarding the hate brief from the DOJ. Tonight looks like it will be the night I am no longer a Democrat. I'm sick of this party of do nothings. All talk and no action. And when they do take action they spit in their supporter's faces and cater to the people that would never vote for them anyway. What a bunch of worthless losers.

Mr. Gibbs -- I beg to differ with you. The Justice Department is NOT the President's. It is the United States Department of Justice NOT the President Barack Obama Department of Justice.
You have crossed the line and believe the government belongs to the President. It does NOT -- it belongs to WE, THE PEOPLE.
Remember us? We're the ones who foot the bills, who pay your pay check and upon whose backs the government receives its money and benefits.
Get your act together, Mr. Gibbs. In fact, all of you in the federal administration and get your act together and remember who your true taskmasters are.

WAIT A MINUTE ! They've finally given us what we all wanted. Hooray:
The Obama administration has changed course and will now allow same-sex couples to use their spouse’s surname when they apply for passports with the US State Department, a gay activist group said today in Boston.
Hot diggity-fucking-dog. You still have no tax benefits, your foreign partner can't come to the US, you are considered equal to pedophiles and people in incestuous relationships, and you can't serve in the military -- but you can get a passport in your husband's name.
Earth to Obama: We could do that before simply by going to court and changing our name legally, and some people have done that. Thanks again for nothing.
Soundboy_jeff_meanie
I don't get it... if you legally change your name anyway, they'd have to issue you a passport in the new name.
so... what's changed exactly?
RyansTake
if you changed your name through getting married -- as straight couples do -- the feds weren't accepting it. It, apparently, violated DOMA. (THat's how far-sweeping and awful that bill is).
However, people could change their name the old fashioned way. Not through the marriage cert., but through the courts, like my friend who had a long and hard-to-pronounce name and decided to change it to his mother's maiden name, instead.
Soundboy_jeff_meanie
if its a LEGAL name change, the married part has no standing in it.
what I don't understand is... why would the federal government have a problem with someone changing their name if its legal in the state they reside in. Name change has NOTHING to do with federal marriage laws.
I can change my name legally to 'Freddy the Wonderdog' at the state level, then apply for a passport.
so I guess I'm confused as to what changed in the federal law... is there a place on the passport for 'married/unmarried'? I don't remember.

I just got off the phone with a very understanding person at the DNC (877-336-7200). In the most professional and polite way possible I ripped the Democrats and the administration a new one.
She could tell my outrage and was very methodical in writing down the points I was making. I made it clear that we wanted action and would no longer accept promises. I told her that Gibbs response to the brief question today just left me speachless.
She took all my contact information, including my cell phone, and said that I would receive a response. She said they've been getting lots of calls so it might be a few days before the chairman issues something. I told her that something better be done pronto because the wound is festering.
Keep up the calls to the DNC and Congress and the White House.

Everyone should pledge to not give any more of their hard earned money to another bigoted politician or political party. We really need a new progressive party for this nation. Bill Maher is right on point when he says we have a two parties, a far right wing and a moderate wing. There is no far left wing in our political system like their should be to counter the far right. When you have only far right and center, it will always trend to the right and we need more balance in our political system.
We all thought Obama was the answer, but he is just a bag of hot air with a bag full of nice tags. Remember, we are the change we have been searching for? Change doesn't come from Washington, change comes to Washington. We fell in love with the words and that love was betrayed. We deserve so much better than Obama and his pretty words.

This is sickening to me. Obama is a fraud. He courted us for our money and votes and once we were no longer needed he cast us aside like an old rag. I'm upset at myself for giving his campaign money, but it's taught me a lesson--isn't that what life supposed to be about? I will never give money to another politician until I see results, from now on it's results first, contribution comes after that.

So let me get this straight...
Obama is supposed to write legislation to repeal DADT and DOMA. Obama is then supposed to run it down to congress where Obama chairs the approriate committees and Obama is then supposed to cast the votes to get the bills out of committee. Obama is then supposed to schedule a vote on these bills. Obama is then supposed to cast 51 or 61 votes himself to pass the legislation and then run up to his office where he can sign the bills into law.
Am I close?
He has stated that he'd support a repeal of these laws. Screaming at him isn't going to get a bill on his desk.
Jersey
Maybe not but cutting off funding to the dems will surely get noticed.
Soundboy_jeff_meanie
funny, he'd support repealing these laws...
and yet HIS DOJ wrote a brief with all the repugnican reasons to support DOMA.
where does he go from there? if congress DOES move to repeal DOMA, does he say the brief from the DOJ was just a joke?
the repugnicans would shred him... you don't start out moving for the repeal of laws by showing all the reasons you believe it should be upheld.
as for your snarky defense... he hasn't shown any of the 'fierce advocacy' he'd claimed when seeking our cash and votes. screaming might not work, but silence NEVER works.
TimF
He'd likely be relieved that he doesn't have to defend such a law any longer. By the sounds of it, even if he could repeal all of the crappy laws tomorrow, you'd hate him anyways, so why should be even care at this point?
And in no way am I telling you to be silent. I just think you'd be better served by directing your anger towards folks who have actual power to do something.
Right now it's almost as if you're willing to completely pull the plug on health care, the ecnomy, regulation reform, cap & trade, and all foreign affairs just to get some rights that you know damn well are coming down the road. It sucks to wait, but there is a lot of crap that needs to get done and unfortunately the federal government doesn't operate on shift work.
Soundboy_jeff_meanie
I'd hate him?
excuse me, I was a HUGE supporter of Obama... before he forgot about us and then BACKSTABBED us in HIS DOJ's brief.
again, you don't move toward repealing a law by backing the reasons it should be upheld.
If he REALLY wanted to get rid of DOMA, the brief would've essentially said "until it is overturned or found to be unconstitutional, the DOJ will support this law", end of brief.
now... let's talk about the other stuff... healthcare? you seriously think that his ideas might get into legislation that passes?? cap & trade? with half of congress getting lobbying money from wall st. and banks??
the only thing I see him getting anything accomplished on is foreign affairs... maybe the economy if his green proposals aren't shredded completely by the time they pass.
get this straight, I'm not giving the spineless assholes in congress (majority even!) any leeway...
I'm pissed at Obama for strictly personal reasons right now... I've just been told by my 'fierce advocate' that my relationship is akin to an incestuous one or something a pedophile might ingage in.
being that I KNOW you're not gay (or you'd GET that this is personal), you're not getting the anger... a typical "this doesn't affect me, there are so many things more important" response.
NOTHING is more important than civil rights. If we don't fight for mine, who'll make sure they don't take away yours?

It's called the Bully Pulpit. The President uses it to get stuff done. If he cares about something, he puts it in play by publicly asking for (or demanding) it, and Congress reacts as they see fit.
Remember Bush's tax cuts? Do you think he chaired any committees or cast any votes? No, but it was a campaign promise that he continued to campaign for once in office, and congressional Republicans lined up behind him to get it done. Obama has real power here, and he's doing nothing. That says volumes.

From today forward, we should only make donations (and limit our votes) to Democrats for federal office who have made written, pubilc pledges to actively work to overturn DADT and DOMA. As for Democrats running at the state level, donations (and votes) shoud be conditioned upon written, public pledges to vote in favor of gay marriage in their respective states. We should avoid giving to organizations like the DNC because, presumably, we cannot control to whom our donations flow.

Wow. It just keeps getting worser and worser (sic).
Proposal:
How about a campaign to have all of us channel any moneys we'd be giving the DNC or any Democratic candidate or representative, TO OURSELVES - to the HRC, for example, or a new political action campaign formed by someone like John - with the message that we are going to take care of ourselves and fight for our civil rights, since the DNC, the Obama administration and our Democratic Party leaders and representatives seem to it is sufficient to toss the occasional consolation prize our way.
We could do the Jerry Lewis thing and keep a running tab of contributions, because showing them the money feels important.
GLBT Americans and straight family members, friends and allies would be acting along the lines of Hillel's saying, "'If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, then what am I? And if not now, when?'"

I would sooner flush money down the toilet than give it to HRC.
They run off about $40 million a year. What the hell does that buy us? What important bill have they passed in their entire existence? $30 million would pay for around 1,000 field organizers across the country to organize local communities and lobby Congress in coordination with those communities -- getting literally tens of thousands to call, email and show up at the congresscritters' offices. This is what HRC could be with the money they raise. Instead, they're a verifiable cocktail party more obsessed with making nice and getting on TV than actually lifting a finger to expand our rights. They only reason why they've done shit during this entire shit storm is because they were about to be bowled over in all the raging fury.

Anyone have a link to the video? We want to see just how unconformtable it was. I just mind blowing that the administration would not have taken the chance to step back from those statements.

This administration brought out these bogus treats for us only to divide the passive, kool-aid drinking gays that are still in denial that Obama would do this to us, from those who can see clearly what the democratic party isn't doing for us or a president who promised he would be a fierce advocate for our rights. If they can divide and conquer us as a community, they will have won this little battle with us and the passive kool-aid Pollyanna's will continue to give them money and continue to believe their pathetic lies, meanwhile, getting nothing in return but rhetoric, etc.

I have a feeling he's probably not very happy with his justice department over this. But if he were to fire or publicly dress them down, it would give the Mormons ammo to say their religious freedom is under attack because their guy in the DOJ is getting spanked for doing his job the best he can.

Well if he's doing it the best he can, I hear they are hiring at SeaWorld. Better start looking for more competent DOJ lawyers! BTW was the jerk that wrote this brief a holdover from the Bush DOJ. I am curious.

Yes, but one of Obama's people was on the case too. So, it's a toss-up. The Mormon bigot is the lead counsel -- kind of like letting a white supremacist be in charge of an affirmative action case.

But his boss is Tony West, who's name is on the brief, and is an Obama appointee. So there's no excuses and this can't be blamed on a holdover from Bush. This has Obama's fingerprints all over it.

You may have a point, but there it appears to be a really significant portion of the population and their issue is the legitimacy of the entire government. We are only 8% or so at best and our issue is almost universally seen as "selfish".
Now IF we could get our grandparents, parents, our sybs, our aunts, our uncles, our cousins, our neighbors and our coworkers to march with/for us, that would certainly work.
Alas, not a chance.

With that kind of "support" I would rather not have him bother "helping" us gain all our rights. With him it's "two-steps backward and one step forward." We'll never get our full and equal rights with him "helping" us like this.

So if President Obama stands behind the DOJ DoMA brief which conflates consenting gay adult couples with pedophiles and incestors, and if President Obama supports through the repeal of DoMA through legislative means, then wouldn't it follow that President Obama also supports allowing the federal government to recognize marriages between incestuous and pedophilic couples?
The whole of the DOJ logic is so twisted that if Barack Obama wants to have it both ways, then let's use the DOJ logic against him. Namely, that President Obama supports federal recognition of marriages between blood relatives and between adults and children.

We should have know Obama would screw GLBT people when he had the right wing homophobe Rick Warren to give his invocation at his inauguration which created an uproar. So Obama belatedly invited the gay bishop, Gene Robinson to give an invocation at the Lincoln Memorial concert event...NOT the inauguration... So you say that great?? Obama's people had Bishop Robinson speak just before the event was scheduled to be historically recorded and televised live nationally. Oops, it wasn't a mistake that the gay bishop was supposed to be a crumb to the gay community that fully supported Obama with donations and volunteering very early on but Obama was embaressed to be even seen publicly with gays. He and his people made sure an official visual recording of a gay bishop giving an invocation never would exist historically. I disassociate myself from you, Obama. How dare you compare our relationships to incest. You are exploitingly deceitful.

I hope everybody will stop this fiction about the DOMA brief before it does harm. I have read the brief and it does not compare gays to child molesters or incestuous uncles. It cited cases having to do with the minimum age to marry and the right of cousins to marry. That was not to compare gays to anybody. The reason for citing the cases was to show that the Court has held that States are not always required to recognize the laws of other states, nothing more. And I give the Obama administration credit for upholding a constitutional law as it is rather than ignoring laws and precedents like Bush did to support any cause he was interested in - ignoring precedent, science or anything else that stood in his way. Obama has to get the approval of Congress to change DOMA and DADT. That will take time but he will do it. Things like Economic Stimulus, Health care Reform, War, and Climate Change affect everyone, including Gays. Relax, he has some big fish to fry right now.
"I fully support repealing DOMA as long as someone else makes the push for it, but in the meantime I'm going to defend it using illogical and offensive language that you'd be more used to seeing coming out of Jerry Falwell's mouth, even though i'm under no obligation to do so. After that, I'll try to scramble around some and toss the faggots a meatless bone to get them to shut up, boy I hope it works."
i'm not photo-shop saavy enough to do it.
I tried to call again in order to get a different number and it was busy from then on (tried for 20-30 min). Good sign.
Also sent a message regarding how awful the DOMA brief was on whitehouse.gov
Have sent an email to most of my contacts about calling and writing on this. We need to get lots of people moving!

Why do these gay clowns ALWAYS cave?
What weasels! So typical to cave - just like the Democrats!
Here's a CLUE: It's called the United States Constitution and We, the People.
http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/...
Thanks again for nothing.
so... what's changed exactly?
However, people could change their name the old fashioned way. Not through the marriage cert., but through the courts, like my friend who had a long and hard-to-pronounce name and decided to change it to his mother's maiden name, instead.
what I don't understand is... why would the federal government have a problem with someone changing their name if its legal in the state they reside in.
Yes, you can still serve in the Military. You just have to lie about it! What a fucking role model!
Two-week standard service: $99.
Obama to the gays: hey faggots, open up yer Prada bags!
With every passing minute, it is becoming clearer and clearer that they just don't get it. They need to get our and start listening to someone other than the inside-the-beltway bum kissers.
After all, in all respects, the longer they can resist doing that -- the more there is for them.
It's simple power and money greed.
That's the sign I plan to carry at my Pride Rally next week.
Screaming at him isn't going to get a bill on his desk.
and yet HIS DOJ wrote a brief with all the repugnican reasons to support DOMA.
where does he go from there? if congress DOES move to repeal DOMA, does he say the brief from the DOJ was just a joke?
the repugnicans would shred him... you don't start out moving for the repeal of laws by showing all the reasons you believe it should be upheld.
as for your snarky defense... he hasn't shown any of the 'fierce advocacy' he'd claimed when seeking our cash and votes. screaming might not work, but silence NEVER works.
It sucks to wait, but there is a lot of crap that needs to get done and unfortunately the federal government doesn't operate on shift work.
excuse me, I was a HUGE supporter of Obama... before he forgot about us and then BACKSTABBED us in HIS DOJ's brief.
again, you don't move toward repealing a law by backing the reasons it should be upheld.
Remember Bush's tax cuts? Do you think he chaired any committees or cast any votes? No, but it was a campaign promise that he continued to campaign for once in office, and congressional Republicans lined up behind him to get it done. Obama has real power here, and he's doing nothing. That says volumes.
He didn't set the scene as it were?
Your naivete is showing.
NO GAY RIGHTS = NO GAY DOLLARS/NO GAY VOTES
The GAY-TM is closed!
:-(
That is all.
Our challenge is to not allow the disgust to defeat our motivation in claiming our equality. It is a BIG challenge.
BTW, the bush White House never admitted ever doing anything wrong either. looks like Obama is off to a good start at Presidentin', eh?
/snark

You know, on Jan 20, I walked home across the Potomac from the National Mall on Inauguration Day, thinking I had rightfully placed my trust (cautiously) in the hands of someone who had publicly committed to acting in my best interest.
Now, I'm dedicated to walking - screw Metro or biking - back across the Potomac to take the broken trust and work however I must for my own equal rights. Man, this pisses me off. Ironically, June 25 would be my parents' 65th wedding anniversary.

I have not see a wake up call like this to our community since the horror of AIDS became similarly obvious. We need to look back at how we survived then and use that as our model now. It damned sure was not based upon confidence or trust in politicians!
push that on the HRC.
