AMERICAblog: Gingrich threatens 3rd party to breakaway from GOP, criticizes Bush

CAUGHT BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA
In order to gain the political control they've enjoyed over the last ten years, Republican moderates and Reagan conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians, bigots and misanthropes) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats. They made a strategic decision to manipulate and exploit the ignorance, fears and hatreds of dysfunctional and vulnerable voters in order to win elections rather than lose them by being intellectually and morally honest.
Today, those who conspired with the devil are caught between wanting to disassociate themselves with and or casting out the devil they empowered and the karmic reality that they don't have the numbers to hold on to or regain power without continuing to accept and "advocate" the immoral values, hypocrisies and corruptions that are dividing and destroying their party.
The survival of today's shrinking Republican Party has become so dependent on extremism that they have no significant power left WITH or WITHOUT the support of America's increasingly pernicious lunatic fringe.
The idiom "caught between the devil and the deep blue sea" is certainly appropriate as Republicans are facing the dilemma of choosing between two equally undesirable alternatives that both result in Republican impotence in mainstream American politics. They are suffering the consequences of their treachery.
Their irresponsible propping up of George W. Bush cost them their credibility, and their disgraceful and shameless licking of Rush Limbaugh's storm trooper boots is costing them their viability.

Osage, 'zackly right - dead on. Good job.
I cannot imagine how the GOP will reconcile their beliefs, constituancies, recent record and today's realities enough to ever come back into power. Too many mutually-exclusive issues to overcome.

I think Gingrich has reached the conclusion that it will take less time to create and build a brand new party than it will to resurrect a GOP that is so radically divided and thoroughly bereft of anything redeemable.

If I recall, Gingrich recently had an idea to slow down teen pregnancy's.. in essence, he wanted to pay underage girls not to get pregnant... I thought the republicans were so much against entitlement programs?
Wasn't Welfare created to basically pay people not to steal.. because it was cheaper to give the poorest and unemployable people a monthly welfare check than to pay to incarcerate them in the jails and prisons for their theft offenses... so Gingrich does have ideas...

Just met with my financial advisor. Query of the day: wonder when some journalist is actually going to go through the campaign contributions made by Madoff? Who made what phone calls to squelch the investigations a few years ago, and when were they made with respect to those contributions? This could be tasty. PS the verb is "faze" not "phase". Sorry. It's a teacher thing......

The truth is that the Republican party has so completely destroyed the country and their credibility, that they can't just "rebrand" themselves and win elections.
Gingrich is looking at starting a "new" party that would not be so closely related to the Bush era distasters, and has no past history to burden them (even though this new party would probably be made up of the usual Republican suspects).

The Republicans have to regain their fundraising savvy. They kept in power because they were out raising Dems during the Clinton and early Bush years 2:1. They lost it after Katrina, and the work of Chuck Schumer, who really hit Wall Street hard for money.
The Republicans also have to realize that they can't win elections being a Southern Conservative Party, and pick off a one or two moderate States like Ohio and a conservative state (well most of the time) Indiana. They need to be a serious player in California, and they pretty much written California off. (with the exception of the recall and election of Governor Schwarzenegger)

Gingrich is doing this, like anything he does, with his own vested interest at heart. The Republicans aren't going to split up, or there is going to be a third party. History of third parties show they lose momentum after a couple years, as we have witness with the Reform Party.
If anything this is more about taking the reins of the Republican Party. The Republicans are at the crossroads that the Democrats were in 1980 or 2002. They can be ideologically pure or they can make some smart pragmatic moves some compromises, and be a party in power. They are not going to anytime soon to curtail the far right. They certainly won't return to power with Gingrich at the helm. If the Republican leaders were smart, they followed how the Dems did the "50 State" strategy. The Republicans need to reach out to the Industrial Midwest, Northeast and the Southwest. They need to bite the bullet on immigration, if they want to viable in California again. They basically have to put Southern Governors and Southern Senators in their place.

Good theory, but Osage explains up above why this cannot work.

The Republicans are the same problem of any political party out of power, that has a strong base controlling the party but not winning elections. Whether it is the Republicans now, the Democrats in 2002 and 2004 and the Labour Party in the 1980s. The Republicans have a tough task, they need to keep the far right in line, while reaching out to moderates, even have the moderates control the party again. On the surface, Michael Steele was a good step in the right direction, but they need a moderate who has power, instead of a lightweight like Steele. it has nothing to do with making "a pact with the devil" as Osage put it. In some ways a person who could use his remaining power to put the Republicans on the right track, (which I doubt he wants to do) is President Bush. Basically he needs or anyone Republican official has to seriously control the far right. They also have to realize the Reagan technique of economic conservativism combine with social conservatism, isn't going to win elections.
Right now, the 2012 Federal Elections are in control of the Democrats and Obama, Obama has to make some really bonehead, Katrina like moves, like "fundamentals of the economy are strong" to do some serious damage to his re-election.

I think the division of the GOP into smaller political organizations (e.g., religious kooks, libertarians, fiscal conservatives, racist nativists, gaybashers, and personality cults for Palin, Romney, Gingrich, etc) is a terrific idea. If they divide themselves into warring factions they will only empower the Democrats.

I prefer the phrasing (frasing ? <g>), "chop themselves into warring factions ... "

I've thought the conservatives have been masquerading as Republicans for many years now, especially the last 8. It is about time they came out of their closet and shown their true intent to create a one-party majority that DeLay used to dream about. Then Americans can hold them accountable for their radical tendencies.

The GOP would probably benefit by splitting into two. One party for the idiots, and a separate party for the real idiots.

You know the GOP is fukced when Newt Gingrich is their voice of reason and intelligence.
(It hurt to write "voice of reason and intelligence" and "Newt Gingrich" in the same sentance. My laptop just exploded.)

Pouring the national treasure into the gaping maw of Wall Street, as Obama has done and continues to do, has a distinctly Republican feel to it, but then again, what does Republican mean, or Democrat for that matter.
Wall Street uber alles.

Israeli exports hit by European boycotts after attacks on Gaza A fifth of Israeli exporters report drop in demand as footage of Gaza attacks changes behaviour of consumers and investors
Israeli companies are feeling the impact of boycott moves in Europe, according to surveys, amid growing concern within the Israeli business sector over organised campaigns following the recent attack on Gaza. Last week, the Israel Manufacturers Association reported that 21% of 90 local exporters who were questioned had felt a drop in demand due to boycotts, mostly from the UK and Scandinavian countries. Last month, a report from the Israel Export Institute reported that 10% of 400 polled exporters received order cancellation notices this year, because of Israel's assault on Gaza.
"There is no doubt that a red light has been switched on," Dan Katrivas, head of the foreign trade department at the Israel Manufacturers Association, told Maariv newspaper this week. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/apr/03/isr...

Is this the same Newt Gingrich who became a devout Catholic last Sunday? and now he's going to set up a break-away Conservative party? that would be the Vatican Party, would it?

Yes, Gingrich needs to remind everyone what the Republicans spent their money on, versus what Obama is spending our money on. For instance, all the money Bu$h wanted was basically for the disasters he caused, including the Iraq War. Obama, on the other hand, is actually including the costs of the war of choice, Bush started, and trying to build infrastructure to implement Keynesian solutions to the economic crisis. Huge difference, but I don't expect Republicans to point the differences out even if they understood the differences.
The author of the article rightly points out that many disgusting people are probably very nice in private, social situations, but he goes on to say: "Rush trades in provocation for it's own sake, in service only to himself. It might bring home the bacon, but apparently, it's nothing to be proud of."
I'd say the same thing about the slimy White Salamander called Newt. He's desperately trying to make a comeback--his ego demands it and his inner Madonna desperately needs a makeover. Let the fear begin (again and again and again...*sigh*). Same ol' fart just in a new party. Actually, I thought Facism was already taken.

I think it's a good idea. The Republicans are like a dead man walking. It's best if they just die. They don't deserve to continue to exist after what they've done to America, and you can go back to "trickle down economics," the war on drugs, off shoring, deregulation, the repeal of the fairness doctrine (that gave birth to Limbaugh et all) etc that got started with Regan.
As for Newt, I believe his rich mostly white suburban district in GA was taking in more federal dollars than any other congressional district save two or three districts with massive federal projects in them like NASA, and Newport News VA. Small government my ass.

I honestly hope he pulls it off. Not because I believe in him. I can't stand him. But I'm sick of us only having two parties in this country. You can't count the green party. We need five or six political parties in this country. This would help make policy be judged on its merits instead of whether or not its democrat or republican sponsored.
In order to gain the political control they've enjoyed over the last ten years, Republican moderates and Reagan conservatives made a pact with the devil (faux Christians, bigots and misanthropes) to achieve the numbers they needed to defeat Democrats.
