As nasty as Glenn Beck is, John, you're better than this thread. He doesn't choke up over Palin per se, he chokes up when he mentions his own daughter, who has cerebral palsy. I'm sure I'd do the same if I had the same struggle and was discussing other parents who understood my situation, even if that meant Sarah Palin. Of all the Palin-lovers on the right, there's now one whose affinity for her I can sort of understand. (ps: I think everything else about this video deserves mocking. just not the choking up part.)

We truly don't know the reason for Beck's emoting. Likely, Beck doesn't know, either. What we do know about him is that he's easily manipulated and he's a superb hypnotic subject, because he readily enters into a trance when he emotes in front of the camera. If he easily enters into a trance while on national cable, he's terribly suggestible off-camera, and likely one of the most gullible people ever to hold a microphone.

If I were to speculate, I'd guess that Beck continually approaches a persona that is akin to an ideal Reaganesque/Bush "conservative", a lone wolf-baying in the wilderness- unsung hero, who speaks the "truth" amid a landscape that has no ears. Logically, then, Beck develops a narcissism based upon a persona that never matures, but is always victimized by listeners' "lack of understanding". Were he an alcoholic, he'd be one of those self-pitying overcoat drunks at the end of the bar who sucks the life out of a good evening.

I'm guessing that, somewhere in the FoxNews editorial rooms, these matters are quickly brushed over because of the belief that Beck draws an audience, no matter how small, and that he is able to ham it up (while displaying his pathologies) in front of a camera for the duration of an entire show. He fills programming space.

I listened to Beck this am in the car - just wanted to see if his head was exploding today - it was. He said he understood why people admired Obama, it's just that they were all so ARROGANT - code for uppity. Watch his body language. When he asks her if Obama will be her president, he looks down as she says, "Absolutely." And when he says he will "support" the president but speak up when he disagrees on policy, he crosses his arms and leans back. The hypocrisy just screams off of him. Palin's "Taxes are punishment" belief is an extension of the simplistic, quick-fix culture that has been common in politics for way too long. While Palin is a relatively "fresh face" in US politics, her beliefs are old, outmoded, and truly destructive versions of Reagan's "What's in it for me?" cultural shift, the fruits of which have led to the economic and political mess that we have right now.

C'mon people, it's Glen Beck... sensationalism is what he does and it's why a camera is pointed at him. It's what MEDIA does now. We have woken up to what the repukelicans have done to this country..... the banks and unregulated financial industry have screwed us over.... the failing auto industry is no better in their self serving ways.
