AMERICAblog: Global warming trumps gay bashing

  • No Hope In Politics · 11 months ago
Would Obama "play nice" with a preacher who compared interracial sex to zoophilia?

Invite him to pray in front of millions while the product of "sin" stood behind him and bowed his head?

Obama is all of the evidence anyone ever needs... Government is the enemy of liberty.

    Always & forever.

    Amen.
  • Bush Bites · 11 months ago
Agree with your anger, disagree with your "government is enemy" bit of libertarianism bullshit.

You'd be lynched if not for hate crime laws.
  • No Hope In Politics · 11 months ago
So no one has been lynched by the Gov't due to drug laws?

No one has been lynched since the passage of hate crime laws?

The realization that Gov't is the enemy of liberty is not 'libertarian.'

It is reality-based. You are free to 'think' otherwise.
  • Bush Bites · 11 months ago
Abused power is the enemy of liberty.

That can come from government, it can come from industry, it can come from a preachers, it can come from a bunch of gun nuts.

Government is not any more inheritly evil than any other power center.......and there will ALWAYS be some power center.
  • No Hope In Politics · 11 months ago
You admit that I am correct!

As long Gov't abuses power, it is the enemy of liberty.

Let us know when Gov't ever stops abusing power.

    ;^)
  • Bush Bites · 11 months ago
Don't pull that Wingnut shit on me.

I said any power center can abuse liberty.

Government is the least objectionable of them, because the vote and courts at least provide the opportunity for redress.

Not so any other power center.
  • No Hope In Politics · 11 months ago
Your rationalization means so much to the victims.

    Really.

    It does.

    ;^)
  • Bush Bites · 11 months ago
Sorry if rational arguments bother you.
  • No Hope In Politics · 11 months ago
Sorry if you don't own a dictionary or simply don't know how to use it.

    ;^)
  • Me · 11 months ago
Yeah, 'free' to think... but not much else without prior approval from the govt.

    I agree w/ you btw -
  • SCLiberal · 11 months ago
Is it time to give up on the Democrats and go with a true progressive party?
  • Bush Bites · 11 months ago
    Yeah, that'll work......

Sorry, but you have to work within to change the party.....going outside will lead to a worse situation.
  • Linda Sheldon · 11 months ago
I wrote this on the Obama/Biden site - we'll see if I get an answer: I am a supportive, excited and appreciative democrat - inspired and pragmatically relieved by this leadership group. I know there are strategies to inviting Warren and Lowery to participate in the Inauguration, but as a gay woman I cannot stop weeping with disappointment and hurt that Warren will share this most amazing moment, and simultaneously legitimize his homophobic, creationist and sophomoric interpretations of our modern world and dilemnas - this is heartbreaking for me and I don't understand - please help me understand.
  • JayR · 11 months ago
Ok. Where is Farrahkhan? Rev. Wright? Tom Metzger? They all piss some segment of the population off but they are all Americans.
  • Houndentenor · 11 months ago
I alway knew Obama would throw me under the bus. They all do eventually. Even Clinton has to be inaugurated first before selling us out.

    *sigh*
  • DonS · 11 months ago
Joe, this is the most fired up I can remember you being, and it serves you well!

My take, another couple of angles:

-- Obama never was really progressive, never identified even with black issues. And he told us so.

-- Obama is either hugely naive, or egoistic or both to think he can "bring us all together". Such an outcome is the by product of forceful and constructive policy direction, not the result of psychological game playing aimed at the media and the wingers.

what happened to the separation of church and state? we have enough problems in the us that need solutions, not prayer.

'Swinging Dick' Warren is also a misogynist and anti-Semite. Cynical Political Ploys...the change I voted for.
  • From Atlanta · 11 months ago
I hope you'll keep this up, John. You've inspired me to write Obama; I just hit "send."

    Here's my bit:

President-Elect Obama, you said you'd make mistakes during your presidency; it occurs to me that I never heard you say anything about how you'd rectify them.

I'm not alone in feeling that you have made a huge mistake selecting Warren to lead the invocation at your inauguration. Say all you want, but for many of us who fight for equal rights and for the separation of church and state, seeing Warren on stage, publicly elevated by you, will be like seeing a Ku Klux Klan Imperial Wizard on stage.

Say all you want about Warren's good deeds; Warren equates my civil marriage to my same-sex spouse with a relationship between "a brother and sister be together and call[ing] that marriage," and with "an older guy marrying a child and calling that a marriage," and with "one guy having multiple wives and calling that marriage."

When I was a teenager, my father became good friends with a Mafia boss - a guy at the head of the Canadian mob. My father genuinely liked the guy, and this shook my idealistic soul completely. What outraged me most was how my father would justify his friendship: To my shouts of "But Dad, he has people killed!' my father would reply, "But you should see how much he loves his kids and all the good he does for his friends."

Sadly, President-Elect Obama, you with your choice of Warren, and with your justification of your choice by listing Mr. Warren's good deeds, you are reminding me of my father.

It's not too late to get Warren off stage. If he's your friend, he'll understand, after all.

And don't tell me that having Rev. Lowery in the lineup makes Warren's selection OK. That's like arguing that the presence of a leader of the Anti-Defamation League negates the presence of a KKK Imperial Wizard.

Take a chance and show us that you can rectify your mistakes. That would be a refreshing show of positive leadership!
  • scottinsf · 11 months ago
Screw them. Team Obama can fuck off. They've lost my support.

And to those PUMAs out there with your "told you so" spiel: Hillary Clinton is just as bad and is not a friend of GLBT's and I'd still vote Obama over Clinton.
  • Older_Wiser · 11 months ago
Did Obama say that the era of "interest group poltics" is over, as one pundit just said? Is that all the LGBT community is, an "interest group?"

He certainly had a weak response to the press question about Warren, starting with the "we have our differences and I'm about bringing people together" rhetoric.
  • Tom · 11 months ago
Why did anyone expect better from Obama and the Democrats?

I still voted for the man but not with any notions he would do a damn thing for my family, I voted for him because he was the lesser of two evils. Never expect much from Democrats and you won't be disappointed by them, they are just slightly better than Republicans.
  • tlsintx · 11 months ago
Obama is simply continuing the Bush Administration MO (probably the Clinton MO as well):

He will cozy up to the religious right for their votes/support but will never fully support them when push comes to shove. And equal rights for gay Americans gets torpedoed. This is NOT doing the right thing.

This makes me sick. I voted to stop this shit.
  • james · 11 months ago
At least he is consistent in his pathos and cynicism. He said the same thing during the campaign and the McClurkin incident.
  • jerryCA · 11 months ago
"I believe marriage is between man and woman" no "girly" dogs... huh? He has two daughters... so what is he saying? He wished he had sons? Ya'll better prick up your ears and cut out the adoration and admiration for Obama. He's gonna screw us over and over like DiFi.... don't not behave like Log Cabin gays.

There's a discussion going on Change.gov on social issues. Rick Warren is the current topic. Check it out and add your concern at:
    http://change.gov/page/content/discussservice

    Obama, awake!
  • Older_Wiser · 11 months ago
I went over there, and when I read "God decides what's moral or immoral" well, my head exploded...
  • Indigo · 11 months ago
Yeah . . . it's a little odd.  Maybe a lot odd.  Apparenly Mr. O is not yet where he needs to be if he plans to lead the nation.  These next four years are not a good time to declare a hiatus from civil rights.
  • BSVICKERS · 11 months ago
Keep the pressure on! Don't let up like last time when we quickly got over McClurkin...UNACCEPTABLE.
  • tlsintx · 11 months ago
reading all the posts around the net from people telling gays to sit down and shut up just brings it home how many people do not understand how fundamental a deal this is. i guess most people really think being gay is just a lifestyle choice and we should stop making such a fuss about such minor thing.

    fuck that shit.
  • EmGD · 11 months ago
What, you don't like being told to sit down and shut the fuck up, lest you smear the crowning ceremony with your dirty gay fingerprints? At least we know that they're adopting one of the time honored tropes of Washington leadership: Pissing off teh librulz is of paramount importance. Anything to ingratiate yourself to a bunch of cretins who will never vote for you and stand opposed to your every legislative accomplishment.

  • jhb · 11 months ago
I guess they should gather up all the shoes people are throwing around the White House to pass back out on inauguration day. Good grief that was a short honeymoon.
  • Bart · 11 months ago
During the presser Obama stood there and lied through his teeth when he said he fiercely advocates for gay equality, when he does not support gay quality in marriage but instead wants colored and white restrooms and water fountains for gays and straights -- in the form of civil unions with all the so-called rights therein and marriage for straights.
  • MNPundit · 11 months ago
Except it actually DOES trump gay bashing. BUT THAT'S NOT THE GOD-DAMN CHOICE IS IT!?

What are they going to do if you didn't select Rick Warren? sit in their cars and guzzle gas? How is this going to help in terms of keeping us alive through climate change? Christ what a stupid response.
  • damian · 11 months ago
You all wanted this asshole, because he is black and it made you feel good to support him, despite the fact that he is a total phony: just ask former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown.

You all wanted him so that black people would finally get off their lazy asses and vote, and vote they did in record numbers. In California it is black people who passed Prop 8.

You can bitch and moan all you want about Mormons & Rick Warren, and block Mormons from performing Broadway show tunes (that'll show 'em!), but in the end, it was black people who took gay peoples rights away in California.
  • Ugh · 11 months ago
Nice. So, you're a racist bigot who is upset about a homophobe?
  • Lolis · 11 months ago
your whole comment is very ignorant and sad.

The only asshole here is you. You poor Mom must have been in excrucsiatiing pain giving birth to a pinhead.
  • KareninATL · 11 months ago
Why is it necessary for Obama to begin his administration by designating an entire group of people as second class citizens? I see, apparently the country can't function without official unworthies to scapegoat.

Terrible choice. Ugly, low class and so pointlessly destructive.

My husband and I already wrote to Change.gov, for what that's worth.
  • Milli · 11 months ago
    I wrote too.
  • Bush Bites · 11 months ago
    MSNBC talking about it again.
  • Ugh · 11 months ago
    OH NO!

White rich gay blogger boys have their feelings hurt!

    Come on. Get over it.

Warren donates 90% of his money to fight poverty. How much do YOU donate, Joe? John? You get rich off the backs of Americablog readers (yet complain you are poor b/c you "only" own a studio in DC) and then get all up in arms about stuff like this.

You're STILL completely ignoring the Lowery selection. I guess black civil rights heroes don't matter to you. Yet, you're totally fine with blaming Prop 8 on the blacks!

    No wonder.
  • Cannon · 11 months ago
    My sentiments exactly.
  • Lolis · 11 months ago
Iook at how the conservatives are reacting:

Pretty big segment about it on MSNBC.

    Interesting....

    Warren cancels Lowery out.

    you're either a bigot or you're not.
  • Milli · 11 months ago
I love this notion that if you do good things, you're entitled to a pass on some of the bad things that you do. Yesterday I volunteered to read for the blind, and then I rescued some orphaned kittens from the freezing cold. Do I have license now to make the minorities I meet on the bus sit in the back? I really don't like being near them. Whatever they have may be catchy or something. Obama will support me on that, won't he? Just think of those kittens and how cute and alive they are!!
  • Cannon · 11 months ago
I think I'm going to go ahead and cancel my subscription to the RSS feed here. You are REALLY overreacting on this with this being your 3rd post in a row and 7th overall. Where you even listening when Obama said he was going to be bringing together people from opposite ends of the spectrum or does it only matter when it's YOUR opposite (Even though there WILL be a pro-gay minister there as well AND the President is pro-gay rights who has said he disagrees with those policies.)?

So I'm gone from this site. It was great during the campaign but I see where this is headed.
  • Milli · 11 months ago
Its morally ok to be anti-gay? Is it morally ok to be anti-black? Why doesn't Obama invite some KKK members to stand next to him as he takes his oath of office? That will show how dedicated he is to bringing people together.......
  • Cannon · 11 months ago
Anti-Black and Anti-Gay are two completely different things. Black is who I am on the inside and outside. People hate Black on sight. If you're white and gay, there's no way of telling until you get to know the person (unless they're super flamboyant). I wouldn't be able to tell that my wife's God-Father was gay if I met him on the street.

Did I say anything about morals at all? No, I said you like the idea of rivals getting together until it's YOUR rival he signs up.

And yes, I'd love to see KKK members on stage giving props to the first Black president.
  • Milli · 11 months ago
What the heck does being able to "tell" if someone is gay have to do with this discussion?
  • WestbrookMaine · 11 months ago
I want the money back that I donated to Obama.
  • Malibu Barbie · 11 months ago
Linda Douglass has really mastered the art of Orwellian doublespeak. Obama is going to bring us together by inviting someone who drives us apart.

Yep, Douglass has really learned well from Rove and all the other two-faced lying sumbitches in the Dubya administration.
  • erick28 · 11 months ago
this is very sad. well why should he care about us, were just a tiny speck of voters compared to the vast numbers of the homophobe's followers. because at the end that's what matters.
  • imagenvideo · 11 months ago

Being that this is a "Post Prop 8" world, how about if we got a ballot initiative to rescind the Civil Rights act in California or perhaps an initiative to roll back rights for women? Perhaps it would get some attention and put the shoe on the other foot. It would also highlight the loopy California law about ballot initiatives in the first place.

    Irony aside...

I am willing to give Obama a break on Warren, but only if he actually goes forward with some pro-LGBT measures once in office.
  • Matt · 11 months ago
Why didn't Obama just go with his own pastor, Rev. Wright?
  • swampdoctor · 11 months ago
The anger directed at President-elect Obama for choosing Pastor Rick Warren to lead the invocation at his inauguration smacks of the very hatred that the LGBT community accuses conservatives of. Let's be "tolerant" of everything except Christianity it seems like to me.
  • Bob · 11 months ago
are christians a minority in this country who can be tossed out of their homes or jobs for being christian? I didn't realize that christians needed to be protected. It is a ridiculous comparison to be made. Obama courted us claiming that we mattered to him and his administration and yet each and every time he has had the chance to show us that, he has already failed. He is proving to be a hypocrite and a liar. Christians in this country may be the majority but it doesn't make them right. I think the Nazis were once a majority too.
  • swampdoctor · 11 months ago
If you're being thrown out of your job or house because you are L, B, G or T, it's a corrupt police department or business. There are already laws in place to protect against such discrimination. Christians and Nazis the same thing!? Hitler was a follower of Charles Darwin, not Almighty God. Believe it or not, there are absolute truths. Just because you don't believe in gravity, doesn't make it untrue. Try to disprove that truth by jumping off a 6-story building. Homosexuality is a sin, just like me cheating on my taxes would be a sin. I don't hate homosexuals, but I do hate the sin of L, B, G and T. Jesus loves LBGTs and so do I. They need salvation also.
  • Larryman · 11 months ago
Barack, you want to have Rick Warren give the invocation? Fine. And I nominate Gene Robinson to do the benediction. Now that's inclusive!
  • ronman · 11 months ago
Grand Dragon of the KKK should be included, according to Obama's reasoning.
  • John · 11 months ago
intolerant liberal pricks, get over it!
  • Bob · 11 months ago
THANK YOU! Someone else gets it! I volunteered for Obama, I worked hard at bringing out votes, talking to friends and family members about voting for him in spite of their "backwoods PA god fearing gun clinging" values...yet when this man has had the chance to show me, his supporter, that I was right in backing him, he has been no where to be found. I know he hasn't taken the oath of office yet...but it is well known that it was many of HIS backers in California that threw us under the bus and he has remained silent. It is well known that is was HIS OWN VOICE the Mormons used on the robocalls to lead those who were Obama supporters to deny us our rights...and Now he steps knee deep in with someone who not only opposes gay marriage but opposes GAY PEOPLE in general. This makes me very sad. I feel duped.
  • paul94611 · 11 months ago
I wonder if the Obama administration will invite pastor Hagee to deliver a prayer at the memorial service for a major Roman Catholic member of society in the Catholic Church in the name of inclusion?
  • postdamnit · 11 months ago
As far as I am concerned, Obama is damn lucky that Palin was on the GOP ticket.

OOPs can't say "Global warming", must say "Climate change" now that those pesky recorded temperatures have stopped supporting the warming paradigm.
