AMERICAblog: God, guns and goons

  • aratina · 7 months ago
This is exactly the reason why we can't have serious debates about Obama. These loons go so far past the line that even people who don't like the president end up having to defend him.

This worked to Obama's advantage really well in the last leg of the election (c.f. Joe the Plumber), allowing him to evade any realistic critique. No, it all had to be about his birth certificate, his skin color, socialism, fascism, infanticide, and this ludicrous idea that Obama will take away guns (he put guns in our national parks!!).

The sad fact is, these people can't see the real harm they are doing to our democracy by forcing political debates into la-la land.

These loons go so far past the line that even people who don't like the president end up having to defend him.

You got that right! Obama turns my stomach, but compared to these loons, I'm forced to defend him against such total insanity. I would be horribly embarrassed if a space ship were to land the first people they meet were these extreme loony right. Reminds me of a comic book I read 50 years ago when I was kid, where the alien was a giant caterpillar and a crazy killed the alien as part of his vermin control. Then the sheriff blew away the crazy doing his part to reduce vermin on earth.
  • cowboyneok · 7 months ago
Didn't you know? "Turn the other cheek" simply means to blow everyone away with your gun... in church.
  • Deacon_Blues · 7 months ago
“I don’t see any contradiction in this. Not every Christian denomination is pacifist.” Yeah, but your founder was, asshole! God, I hate living in the south -- and I'm a native.
  • Butch1 · 7 months ago
I'm guessing they are following their "christ's" teachings? (snark) I hope they aren't calling themselves christian because "turn the other cheek" doesn't even fit into this equation.
  • lisa · 7 months ago
this is completely ridiculous. true christians realize that they aren't necessarily supposed to serve their country but they are supposed to be serving God, and doing his work on earth. throughout the bible we are taught to love one another, i challenge them to point to something in the bible that says something about "Americans" and "guns."

it really disgusts me when people damage the glory of God, by relating it to guns and america.

God is greater than a country.

Check out most Talibangelical churches and they usually have the American Flag plastered on the wall behind the choir and pastor. Its very dangerous to combine Christian faith with Nationalistic symbols. Ask the Nazis in Germany who wore belt buckles that read "Gott Mit Uns!" or "God is with us!"
  • jimfromthefoothills · 7 months ago
google nazi germany catholic church.... They marched arm in arm.
  • cowboyneok · 7 months ago
    yeppers!
  • SD_Dave · 7 months ago
How creepy is this? To me, it's VERY deranged. My question would be, by law are they allowed to raffle off a "handgun?" Do they need certain types of permits? Or will they claim 1st Amendment, 1st Amendment? Will they require the "winner" to undergo the legally mandated background check? Will they require to stake out another abortion doctor?
  • Jim Olson · 7 months ago
Um, no. These people make my job so much harder.
  • vickif · 7 months ago
These people are nuts. They do not follow any of Jesus's teachings.
  • cobblepot · 7 months ago
A Presbyterian church in cortez, colorado, west of our town, sponsored handgun lessons a week or so ago. Wow; even the presbyterians! Of course, this is a very conservative county. Ed Abbey used to call cortez "the shithead capital of dipstick county, colorado." Yeppers.
  • kevinbgoode · 7 months ago
Obviously, the rightwing nutjob who murdered Dr. Tiller believed you could bring a gun to church too.
  • Indigo · 7 months ago
Creepy perhaps but consistent with the long-standing practices of the American pioneers and even a 1942 patriotic song, "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition." You were raised under a cloud of unknowning, Chris. Or maybe you knew that and pretended not to?
  • frey · 7 months ago
Um, that was in reference to a specific incident in world War 2. See, lots of guns were around in ww2, it being a war and all. It certainly wasn't written in the context of a Louisville suburb.

Nice try though. Go pray to stand-in penis.

    And a picnic! Oh boy!
  • HelenRainier · 7 months ago
If your last name starts with A-L bring a vegetable and if it's M-Z a dessert. Bring your own silver! Refreshments will be provided!

Done lots of those "potluck" church picnics.

    Never Again!

The real question is, "What would Jesus carry?"
I'd bet he was packin' heat during the Sermon on the Mount.
  • Steve_in_CNJ · 7 months ago
so you see, not every jesus is a pacifist.
  • Diderot · 7 months ago
Hey...there IS a bright side to this: Maybe they'll all shoot each other "in Jeeeeeebus' name!" and then there'll be one less batch of Neanderthals in the gene pool! We can only hope...

It's right up there with Arizona's plans to allow individuals to bring concealed weapons into bars.
  • markf217 · 7 months ago
I have a feeling this pastor isn't a Democrat. What a warped thing to do at church!
  • postdamnit · 7 months ago
Only in America but then look at our murder rate in this country.

When I first saw the title of this article I thought to myself "I bet it's a 'church' in the south.." and lo and behold. This isn't just creepy, it's downright scary especially with all the hate-filled crap being spewed by the bobbleheads.
Why the hell would anyone need to bring a gun to church in the first place is beyond me. As we have painfully witnessed in the past there are too many live wires out there. (and people wonder why I don't believe in religion...)
I'm relieved the "campus-carry" law didn't pass down here in TX.

Matthew 26:52 New International Version ""Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword."

Revelation 13:10 American Standard Version "if any man shall kill with the sword, with the sword must he be killed."

People of normal intelligence realise he was talking about people killing other people, not weaponry.
  • jeb1 · 7 months ago
ummm...it's referring to warriors and waring not to people who defend themselves. Get a clue.
  • johnnyvenom · 7 months ago
See...I would have outed myself, assuming I was part of this wacky clan of gun-toting end-timing Xtians, by bringing my hair dryer (I don't own a gun, should I?).
  • TuxedoCartman · 7 months ago
I read an article about this somewhere else. The bit that stuck out to me, though, was that people were encouraged to bring their guns to church, PROVIDED THAT THEY WERE UNLOADED AND REGISTERED WITH SECURITY!

Tell me, if gun owners are so cool and awesome and responsible, and guns are so safe and essential... why did they require them to be unloaded? Doesn't that render them essentially useless if a crazed terrorist-loving liberal were to crash through the front doors shooting everyone?
  • mr_ed · 7 months ago
Any shrink will tell you that a gun is a substitute for a penis.
  • Name · 7 months ago
Americans have no penises then cuz they sure love them some guns.....
  • MNUSA · 7 months ago
Perhaps they should start a new religion to fit their philosophy. They, obviously, don't get the Christ part of Christianity:

"For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6).

Confess Jesus loves you or I'll blow your brains out.
  • SouthernYankee · 7 months ago
I just can't fathom god wanting people to bring guns into church. This pastor is nuts along with its congregation. I wouldn't go to a church like that. There is no god in that kind of church.
  • bucklerjc · 7 months ago
Which raises the question-WWJC? What would Jesus carry?
  • vkobaya · 7 months ago
Talk about violently mentally ill crackpots. Sheeze! How are these people allowed to walk the streets. Should be locked up in mental hospitals, in straitjacket, padded cells and medicated to gills. Sadly being a minister of God is no protection against being violently mentally ill or bigoted and criminally hateful. These jackasses are expressing their shock, hatred and bigotry against the election Obama as our American president. I certainly hope the polls are correct and these violent, criminals are only a very small part of the population as they are all heavily armed. The photo accompanying this story shows the psychotic pastor with a submachine gun at a shooting range. It may well be that we elected a black president before the nation was ready, but sadly, I don't think Obama was ready for the big time either.
  • jeb1 · 7 months ago
This is great. We need to support gun ownership and firearm safety. Good for him.
  • Bill · 7 months ago
Nothing unusual about guns in church. Go to any military chapel service and you will probably see several guys with weapons.
  • David Koresh · 7 months ago
If Jesus would have had guns, he never would have said that pacifist junk. Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. That would be your wealth and your freedom.
  • TUX_299 · 7 months ago
quite frankly i find the opinions on this blog disturbing, all they did was there constitutional right to "bear arms" , please learn the facts Britain eliminated gun ownership and crime is higher that ever, ya no is getting killed by guns but now crime is out of control and there is the same or more homicides..... be careful what you wish for!!!! it could be like IRAN or Russia.....TUXTUX
  • ethanhunt · 7 months ago
your title makes no sense, goons? I think the goons are the ones that think this is strange, wierd or wrong. In our congregation in east texas we have several armed people to ensure the safety of all. These aren't cops either, just law abiding responsible citizens to ensure the safety of others. We do this for the same reason we have fire extinguishers on the walls and a first aid kit closeby - bad things happen and we must keep everyone safe. I'm scared of this direction liberals are trying to take this country - woe to you.

No wonder the south has the stigma as being the least-educated and craziest region of the U.S. I wonder if there was banjo music playing during all of this...
