I do recall them chanting USA at the Iraq war Vets that made it into the Convention and held up signs stating "You can't win an occupation".
We know how the GOP knows better than the men that have actually been there.

Joe, the intent of the "Walter Reed" pic from below was supposed to be a subliminal message about "supporting the troops" without having to actually say anything, but they screwed up and got the wrong pic. And really, with McCain's and every other republican only giving lip service over the last 6 years and not any kind of meaningful support to the troops what record were they going to tout??? that they've used the troops for political gain on any and every occasion, that they've repeatedly either cut or blocked necessary funding for armor, and other equipment needed on the front lines.
In short, they have NO record of supporting the troops, except their tagline "Support the troops".

they ignored the economy as well.
if you think about it, its a very unpopular war and the economy is going down the tubes... why would they point this stuff out when he's having a REALLY hard time convincing people he's different than chimpy?
they made the convention about john mcsame, mostly history... and even there, they lied about his record over the last 25 years.
no solutions, no discussion of problems the average Jane/Joe sees.

I didn't (couldn't) watch Mac's entire speech, but instead watched a movie on another channel. However, when the movie broke for an commercial, I'd switch back to see if the old codger was saying anything important. Everytime I did that, he was talking about war, his service in Viet Nam, how much safer we'll be with the repubs, etc., etc., etc.
I just find it so bewildering how anyone can actually believe our country could improve with these yahoos in charge. Sure the surge worked. If the republicans are so good at national defense, how come it took them so long to institute the surge? Why wasn't enough troops used initially to end the violence sooner? I'm sure we can all answer these questions. The Iraq war is the ONLY thing that got Bush four more years by playing on the fears of the American people!!! And now they're trying to do the same thing again for Mac.
Wake up America. The rest of the world knows what we should do, how come our own citizens don't???

Troops are props to the Republican party. Something so be stood in front of, pointed at from a podium, or panned to in a crowd shot. Though I must say, one veteran did get a lot of face time during McCain's speech: the IAVA guy with the sign who they crowd kept chanting USA at, perhaps confused that someone could serve and not be a Republican.
"He also said nothing about the nearly 4,200 troops who have died or the Veterans who have come back to neglect and mistreatment under the Bush administration".
You have hit upon it! The reason the republicans did not mention the troops is because they know they have killed, maimed & mistreated these citizens. The republicans fear our service members & veterans because it exposes them has hollow, war profiteering destroyers of American youth.

Amen! When McCain tries to assert that Barack Obama's effort is all about his own ambitions, he needs to be reminded that he and his surrogates spent an entire convention telling and retelling the narrative of his experience as a soldier -- but couldn't manage the time to share the spotlight with those who are serving, sacrificing and dying NOW.
