    Belinda,

Just a word of advice. You do your cause no favor when you call Hillary a racist. You only compound your mistake by linking to Glenn Beck.
  • Belinda · 1 year ago
jaciemons222: "You do your cause no favor when you call Hillary a racist."

Excuse me, but what exactly do you call photo-shopping a picture of Obama to make him appear more "negroid" in negative ads targeted to whip up an audience in the segregated South?
    http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/3/5/1311...

There's no other word for it that I know of - than pure unadulterated racism.
  • jaclemons222 · 1 year ago
    Belinda,

This story is simply not accurate. Here's the link to prove it.

    http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/did_cli...

May I suggest you rethink your definition of the term. There are real racists out there. Bill and Hillary do not fit the description.
  • jaclemons222 · 1 year ago
    Dear Belinda,

One more comment. The south isn't segregated anymore. Just thought I should point that out.
  • phillydawg68 · 1 year ago
    @jaclemons222
Really? Have you ever been there? Or have you ever left - just for a day?
  • jaclemons222 · 1 year ago
What's the point? Words have meaning. Here's the definition from The American Heritage Dictionary:

"The policy or practice of separating people of different races, classes, or ethnic groups, as in schools, housing, and public or commercial facilities, especially as a form of discrimination."

Now, it's my understanding that schools, housing and public/commercial facilities do not fit that description in the south. If you find they do, let me know and I'll put you in touch with a good lawyer. Give whatever piece of the proceeds you allocate for me to the Clinton for President committee.

Why in the world would an Obama supporter link to a rightwing neanderthal buffoon like Glenn Beck? You might as well have linked to Sean Hannity or Bill O'Reilly.

Disgusting! Geoff Davis' opponent (I cannot bear to say "Mr. Davis' opponent") ought to take this quote and run with it.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
I'm surprized that McConnell would say that. I guess he figured it'd be better than saying "macaca" or using the n- word, but age and seniority do not excuse bad manners. That's another Sourthern rule. Also, it's "Southern," not "southern speak," but I'm sure John spoke from ignorance, not prejudice.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
Honest to god, how can the Republicans trash talk and CONSTANTLY get away with it. Where is the outrage from the Dems?? The last part of this article also has this quote from McConnell. Where the hell is the respect? I am no Clinton fan but even this is too much from a fellow Congressman.

"As for Obama's Democratic rival, McConnell said U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York seems to be "teetering on the brink."

"I hear she hasn't been this worried since a new Hooters opened" near her home with former President Bill Clinton, McConnell said, prompting laughs from the 400 Northern Kentucky Republicans."

As long as the present moron (who he supports) has his finger on that button, we have to say our prayers, and hope he does not mess up more than he already has.

But to be fair, Geoff Davis DOES drink coffee and has a bowling score that's consistently in the triple-digits. That sort of dopey s*it carries A LOT of weight with Republicans. It's what separates te men from the...well...you know...

Y'all should please excuse me if I DON'T hold my breath until the media start demanding McCain repudiates and condemns this sort of trash talk from amongst members of his party. I mean, it's not like McCain said it, just people who support him, and it's unfair, UNFAIR I SAY for any REPUBLICAN to be held responsible for what one of his supporters says. Tis the way of the world.

Mitch McConnell is in office and is kept in office year after year to protect the interests of mining, specifically "mountaintop removal" mining. The last thing he and they want is someone in the presidency that might stop this in Kentucky and elsewhere, or to even make the public aware of the complete destruction, never to be repaired, of this type of mining.

Google "mountaintop mining" for info. Here's one place to start:

I'm glad it happened, to tell you the truth. These scumbags need to be exposed for what they are -- this just makes it easier for us. Living in the south, I believe that many southerners just go through the motions of racism, because that's how they've been raised. They know that it's wrong, and when they're called on it, they can be shamed into doing what's right. Maybe I'm being a naive white man, but I really believe that only the most virulent racists are unreachable. Geoff Davis is going to be crawling on his belly asking for forgiveness, just you wait. McConnell, on the other hand, is another matter (see Racists, Virulent).

I know this is off topic, but still related.

I wish this woman Hillary would stop her Annie Oakley style politics, and give the Democrats a chance to win this. Obama has to fight a two prong war, against McCain, and Hillary's suicidal attacks. She is going down, and taking everyone in the party with her. She has no loyalty to the party or the other democrat, who at the moment, looks like the winner.

We are sick of the attacks, the ridiculing, the fat lies, acting like a republican attack dog, and embarrassing herself and the party. It is time the Democrats got behind the nominee, and fight to win the Presidential election. Bigots like Davis, should be put in their disgusting places, and Hillary is, as usual, being the spoiler. She has distracted the democrats too much, and has become a liability to the party.

    Shame on Hillary Rodham Clinton.

As for Obama's Democratic rival, McConnell said U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York seems to be "teetering on the brink."

"I hear she hasn't been this worried since a new Hooters opened" near her home with former President Bill Clinton, McConnell said, prompting laughs from the 400 Northern Kentucky Republicans.

    ---

So Davis's racism is wrong, but McConnell's misogyny is?

I say we ought to condemn BOTH of them, and they ought to be reprimanded by their respective houses of Congress. Instead, what will likely happen is that the media will not give this story the attention it deserves, McConnell and Davis will offer insincere "apologies" ("I'm sorry if you were offended," which means "why are YOU so thin skinned?"), and the whole thing will be quickly forgotten.

Yes it is off topic BUT I totally agree with you. I have listened to MSNBC and CNN all day about the "bitter" comments. I am fed up. Even some newscasters agree that Obama may have used wrong words but his appraisal of what is happening is correct. I have had it with Clinton and the brain dead that follow her. They are like the 28% that still support George Bush---support no matter what is said or done. To think that some out there actually believe this shit is beyond comprehension. I also am pissed off when Obama defends himself he is being accused of taking part in nasty politics. Someone trashes you are you supposed to take it and say nothing?

And since I am on a rant why the hell is it that EVERY time you time Obama on this blog it comes up as a spelling error. This is been going on forever and I would think whoever controls the spell checker should know the name by Obama by NOW.
  • jaclemons222 · 1 year ago
I'm not going to defend a wingnut house member but if Obama is supposed to usher in this post racial future, a good start would be to allow for the possibility that the commenter meant no racial animus. I wasn't there and obviously can't be sure as to the guys tone and demeanor but how do we get beyond racial stereotypes without allowing for the occasional unintentional faux pas?
  • OlderAndWiser · 1 year ago
It's not just a southern thing--they just kept it going longer. Who is this nobody anyway? A secret Klan member? He ought to be exposed.

BTW, if I hear another 30 or 40 something woman on those diet ads call herself a "girl" one more time, I will demolish my TV. That's another name I thought we feminists had eliminated a long time ago, but its use seems to have been revived. Obviously, any woman 18 or over is legally a woman, not a girl and even then, I prefer using the term "young woman" for older teens. Using the diminutive "girl" is just another way men crippled women--now women are doing it to themselves. Sad.
  • davidx · 1 year ago
For someone "OlderAndWiser," you sound like you're stuck in 1982. Thank God even most of the feminist undergrads I knew back in the day got that chip off their shoulder and moved on.

Aquarius, you are absolutely right. This whole thing is too stressful, and Hillary is not doing the party any favors, by attacking Obama like this. Of course, he should defend himself, or else, he would lose this battle, like Kerry did.
The only problem is, it must be hard to fight against two opponents, usually your resources are all for one. Hillary has dragged the party down, and that is unforgivable. You are also right about her supporters. They remind me so much of the sheep who believed and followed Bush right through this war.
If they cannot see her for who she really is, after all that lying, throwing the kitchen sink at another democrat, and calling it the fun part, and they have forgotten about her Iraq vote, then I have no hope for them. Hillary is now acting as the republican attack dog, and helping McCain, in her desperate bid for the nomination.

Hopefully, you will not see the red lines under Obama's name, when he becomes the President :)

You don't call a black man a "boy" when you're from the south, unless you're intending to harken back to the racist language of slavery

How about you don't call a black man "boy" AT ALL period!

But I'm glad the Republicans are showing their true colors for all the world to see!
  • Sage24 · 1 year ago
Moxiegirl. Tks for the good words. I bet your daughter is cute too :) Goes with the name!

Hillary just makes me mad with her desperation attacks, and she is dragging the whole process too long, which is a plus for the republicans.
They don't have to waste their efforts and attack Obama - she is doing a great job of it herself, and giving them enough of ammunition to make him suffer for the next few months. She has shown a very ugly side to her, and I hope we don't have to live with another divisive President for the next four years.
  • jaclemons222 · 1 year ago
    Sage,

Just how do you suppose we can avoid "divisive"ness? Obama is just a man. He's not going change the way Republicans play politics. We are divided because the Republicans drive wedges between us. They aren't going to stop anytime soon.

  • ericgoldman · 1 year ago
Agreed, anybody who calls a black man "boy" should forfeit their right to participate in public discourse, let alone public office.

As for whether or not there was also a swipe at Bill Clinton's infidelity here, let's be honest -- Bill has a reputation and proven history when it comes to his wandering eye; comments on that reputation and history are fair game (and may even provoke sympathy for Hilary in some corners). I don't think anyone who has read my posts here would label me "anti-Clinton," but to my mind any swipe at the Clinton's here was low class, but in an entirely separate category from "boy."
  • davidx · 1 year ago
ericgoldman: "Agreed, anybody who calls a black man "boy" should forfeit their right to participate in public discourse, let alone public office."

Yes sir, let's get Congress rolling on this one -- no more First Amendment rights for people who call Obama a boy.
  • ericgoldman · 1 year ago
Before you raise the First Amendment as a defense to racism, remember that the First Amendment has always had limits. You cannot yell "Fire" in a crowded theater. You cannot disclose state secrets.

And, believe it or not, there are laws against hate speech that withstand Constitutional scrutiny. Because one Constitutional amendment cannot trump another, and the First Amendment is not a shield to the violation of an individual's civil rights by an elected official.

So allow me to clarify my position to say that referring to black men as "boys" is hate speech, and the speaker forfeits First Amendment protection by committing a hate crime.

And allow me to further say that I find it hard to believe I actually have to have this discussion in 2008, 40 years and 10 days after the assassination of MLK.
  • nsummy · 1 year ago
I can't believe I actually registered to respond to you, but I did. Whether you agree with what was said or not, racist speech is not a hate crime. Calling someone "boy" is not the same as speech causing pandemonium nor is it divulging a state secret. A hate crime is a crime committed (usually violent) which was motivated by a person's race, gender, sexual preference, etc. You better study up on the laws of the land. No one's civil rights were violated.
  • ericgoldman · 1 year ago
As a practicing attorney for more years than I like to admit, I'm pretty comfortable with my understanding that hate speech can be made a crime without violating the First Amendment.

    But congratulations for registering!

    E-
  • nsummy · 1 year ago
I don't know where you got your law degree from, but calling someone "boy" is not a hate crime.
  • ericgoldman · 1 year ago
    nsummy:

Whether or not it qualifies as a hate crime depends entirely on context.
  • nsummy · 1 year ago
Why don't you find me the law or ruling on this? Giving your opinion about someone regardless of how offensive it is does not constitute a hate crime. A black man calling me a cracker is not a hate crime, nor is calling someone boy, regardless of the context. By your reasoning the whole Westboro Baptist Church would be locked up by now, which we know is not the case. And even though you can't believe that we are having this discussion 40 years after MLK was killed, we are, and can, because the 1st amendment right is alive and well, boy.
  • ericgoldman · 1 year ago
Why don't you do some research on your own? You've stated very strong opinions, but apparently have done nothing to educate yourself on the topic.
  • nsummy · 1 year ago
Definition: "A hate crime, also known as a bias crime, is a criminal offense committed against a person, property, or society that is motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ethnicity/national origin."

For it to be a hate crime, it has to be criminal to begin with. Calling someone a name is not criminal and could only be possibly civil if slanderous or libelous. checkmate
  • ericgoldman · 1 year ago
I believe violating someone's civil rights is, in fact, a sufficient predicate offense.
  • nsummy · 1 year ago
    What civil rights were violated?
  • ericgoldman · 1 year ago
    OMG, let's re-cap:

    1. I said that anyone who calls a black man a "boy" has no place in public discourse, let alone public office.
    2. Someone responded by saying that my position was in violation of the First Amendment.
    3. I responded by saying that the First Amendment has limitations, and that there are hat speech laws that withstand Constitutional scrutiny.
    4. After some discussion, you have posted a fine example of just such a law, a hate crime law that reaches hate speech but withstands Constitutional scrutiny.

At this point, you have lost the thread of the discussion. You are arguing for the sake of argument only.

Kind of a recreation of the Bush war plan but with even less of a point.
  • jaclemons222 · 1 year ago
Law degree or not, the context of calling someone who wasn't even in the room at the time "boy" is a pretty big stretch, even you must admit that. My guess is the courts would be pretty busy if your standard for hate crimes were to prevail.
  • ericgoldman · 1 year ago
OK, you want a crime? Here it is.

Geoff Davis disclosed that he and Barack Obama attended a highly classified intelligence meeting. Even the disclosure of the meeting was a breach of national security laws. Moreover, David strongly suggested that nuclear options were discussed at those meetings, which makes the breach even more egregious.

So a strong case can be made that Geoff David violated national security law for the purpose of casting racial aspersions on Barack Obama.

And in such case, the First Amendment will be no defense.

    Can we be done now?
  • jaclemons222 · 1 year ago
    Lawyers...

No, we can't. First of all, it's not clear at all that simply saying one attended a classified intelligence briefing would constitute a breach of the law. But you're moving the goalposts. I know of no judge or jury in the country that would consider this statement, made about a public figure who was not even in the room at the time a hate crime.
  • ericgoldman · 1 year ago
Yes, we can, since now you are putting forth statements than can only be verified by polling every judge and every jury in the land.

    Trust me, we're done.
  • jaclemons222 · 1 year ago

There's nothing personal or particularly acrimonious in what I have to say here, but I don't really much give a sh*t what's going on in the South. You know, either the South has finally been dragged out of the 18th century, or it hasn't. I can live anywhere (but not there)!
  • jaclemons222 · 1 year ago
    JFamily,

I live in NY so it's no skin off my nose. I'm just sayin'. The south isn't segregated. That should be a fact we call all agree on. It may still harbor more racial tension and be more racially divided culturally than the rest of the country but it's not segregated.
  • LowkeySmith · 1 year ago
So you live in NY, I did too before moving to Raleigh ....... there is as much if not Less racism here - maybe because more people cling to religion.
  • phillydawg68 · 1 year ago
    @LowkeySmith

I'm originally from California, lived in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Raleigh NC (early 90's) and now Minnesota again. I'll tell you this, out of all of them, North Carolina was the most beautiful. What a lovely, beautiful state - great golfing, loved the beaches. But as for how blacks and whites treated each other there: what an absolute DESPICABLE crap hole. It's the #1 reason I moved away. One of the few black friends I had while living there was from New York. Living in NC, his SECOND strike was the fact he was gay. I'm not gay myself, but to hear the stories he told? GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY IN HEAVEN! You'd think the devil himself sent my friend there to bring the world as we know it to an end. In fact, folks were absolutely sure the devil had done it when they learned his THIRD strike
  • jaclemons222 · 1 year ago
I've spent many summers in the tidewater area. It's beautiful there. Most of the people I've met from the south are fine folks. There is an underlining tension between the races there that does not exist in the same form up north. How can there not be? The whole country is forever stained by the institution of slavery and it's racist legacy. The south however retains more of that stain because they fought hard to retain their so called
"states rights". Those rights included segregated schools, housing, workplaces and nearly everything else.

I think that racism exists everywhere (unfortunately), be it the North South East or West; we are all part and parcel to it's device. But to say so calmly that one doesn't care about it is truly disgusting. At least in my somewhat old and 30/40 vision...

When every elected official who comes to office TAKES the Oath to uphold the Constitution they either Follow or should step down!

    They should both step down!

I was once a Republican I now am a Independent and I will not vote for McCain or that woman they are BOTH a disgrace to the American citizens. They take us for fools when really they are wearing the hats

I was hoping maybe he who be as old a Robbert Byrde but no luck. He is maybe twenty years older than the "Boy" Boama's 36 years or so. Now if you were to call Jessy Jackson (50's) or Al Sharpton (60's??) a "Boy it would be more of a true race statement. This however I think is the race war commandos looking to roust some rabble.

"He just called Oboma the "N" word! He said "Boy" But he is a hay seed hick from the south and they are all just a bunch of Racisist down there in the old south." Everybody get your dander back up! We need you to keep sending Big Love Oboma that $$$$$$$. After all he grew up poor. He had to walk 10 miles to school every day. Uphill... Both ways..."
Just give it a break with the over sensitive speech policing thank you.
    So I get it.
We cant use his middle name. (Sounds Muslum)
We cant use the fact that he is only a few years shy of being able to run for president. (Did anybody remember to check his ID??)
If we attack him on things he has said we are just takeing things out of context and trying to destroy the best man on the planet.
And if he uses the same tactics or is caught saying something you don't like to hear. (such as admitting that we will not likely be leaving Iraq on THIS BLOGS MEMBERSHIPS timetable but a MILITARY timetable. You just pretend it never happened. He never said it or if he did he was being misquoted by Raceists.

It will be real fun to see all of you jumping threw your own emotional and intelecual hoops trying to justify everything that Oboma dose not do that he said he would do.

I would like to hope that I would be able to relish in my "I don't want to sound like a dick but: I told you so..." But chances are I will be reactivated and sent over to Iraq. Soon to be no longer at the request of Bush. Now at the request of the new Commander in Cheff. B.H.(Big Love) Oboma. First Black president. So I will say it now. Rather than from Iraq (Its hard to lug a laptop around the sand)
I hate to sound like a dick.....

    But I told you so...

All of the ppl making comments like: "When every elected official who comes to office TAKES the Oath to uphold the Constitution they either Follow or should step down!
    They should both step down!"

    and
"An apology AFTER the fact when it comes to such a race charged issue, does no good; clearly this man MEANT every letter of the word BOY.

This is the very thing that has alienated blacks and whites from the GOP for years now; it's their very racist past AND present!"

Can you be anymore hyppocritical? One of your own members in the senate, who was also the Majority Whip and twice the Majority Leader is a known and admitted former KKK member. who supported segregation, and yet he still serves in the senate for the Democrat Party. How about this wonderful statement he made in response to the prospects of racially integrating the military:

"Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds." -Robert Byrd Exalted, Cyclops of his local KKK chapter

Do I agree with his choice of words? No, I don't beleive anyone should be called "boy" whether they be black or white, young or old, but I also believe it is irresponsible to try to hold others to a certain standard while ignoring others who have made similiar poor judgements or even worse. Is Geof Davis racist? I don't know, but he has a right to be racist. whether we agree with it or not.

Calling women "girls" or worse, b*tches and hos is hate speech too....and should be prosecuted to the extent that "boy" is.

"Calling women "girls" or worse, b*tches and hos is hate speech too....and should be prosecuted to the extent that "boy" is." -robthomaseyes

It already is prosecuted to the same extent as "boy" is....NONE because it is not a crime, and certainly not a hate crime. Just because it may hurt someones feelings doesn't make it a hate crime.

As defined in the 1999 National Crime Victim Survey, "A hate crime is a criminal offense committed against a person or property motivated, in whole or in part, by the offender's bias against a race, religion, ethnicity/national origin, gender, sexual preference, or disability. The offense is considered a hate crime whether or not the offender's perception of the victim as a member or supporter of a protected group is correct."

To be a Hate Crime it must be a criminal offense, and calling someone "boy" "b!tch" or "ho" is not a criminal offense.

The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously found that hate crime statutes which criminalize bias-motivated speech or symbolic speech conflict with free speech rights because they isolated certain words based on their content or viewpoint

Okay ericgoldman, according to your interpretation of the law, what ideally should now happen to Representative Dumbass for calling Obama a boy? You initially said he should forfeit his "right to participate in public discourse." I'm not sure exactly what that means. I don't think you are suggesting someone go and cut the idiot's tongue out. But what do you think should be the specific outcome of this "hate crime" -- jail term, civil fine, removal from public office, etc.?

It seems to me like you might have simply made your remarks without thinking through what you were saying. That's okay if that happened. If you ever want to join the Republicans, you'll fit right in.

I honesty think he used the word "boy", to highlight Obama's inexperience. I don't know how many people here have been to Kentucky, but it's a pretty common term. We're full of people who use yall, aint, and boy. Its just who we are, thats how we talk. And I'll be honest, if Davis didn't talk like this, he wouldn't be in office. The people who live here want people who are like them in Congress, and isn't that what its supposed to be about? Don't run him into the ground for talking like his people.
  • IRep502 · 1 year ago
    KYRepub....
How can you defend a guy that makes a statement like that? It's obvious you have the same racist views that he does!!!! I am from Louisville and I NEVER had a grown man call me boy and I'm not 46 years old. It may be a common term in Bullitt County or something but you try that in the city and it would be a different story.... You probably are right though because KY remains one of the most racist states in America and many people there feel just like you. Too bad there is nothing you can do to stop Obama because he WILL win, partly because of his skill, but also partly because of most people's desire to stop the nonsense and get real about our issues
  • lingod · 1 year ago
It was NOT a hate crime plain and simple. If you still don't believe it read the definitions of a hate crime that nsummy, jaclemons and I posted. Like Jaclemons said, if the requirements to qualify as a hate crime were as you claim, our courts would quickly be overwhelmed.

"In the United States, government is broadly forbidden by the First Amendment of the Constitution from restricting speech. Jurists generally understand this to mean that the government cannot regulate the content of speech, but that it can address the harmful effects of speech through laws such as those against defamation or incitement to riot." - from Wikipedia

    myshiba,

    Obama has self-destructed?

Y'know, writing nonsense that demonstrates your lack of information and insight and perhaps even your intelligence, probably isn't the best way to go in an informed public forum. Making up stuff causes others to dismiss you as an ordinary troll. Instead, if you want to be included in a conversation, try reality. It's okay to share your personal opinions, but it's a good idea to have facts to back them up.

    Just sayin'....
