AMERICAblog: GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell obstructs Obama's stimulus package

  • No Hope In Politics · 11 months ago
I don't blame Mitch for voicing concerns about more blowout.

All this money going who knows where for who knows what?

I'd like to hear Dennis Kucinich & Ron Paul discuss the matter...

    with Nouriel Roubini: http://www.rgemonitor.com/blog/roubini/
    Nassim Taleb: http://www.fooledbyrandomness.com/
    & Gerald Celente: http://www.trendsresearch.com/

Right now the first 'blowout' (nice term!) is being used to keep the Dow around 8,500, since Bush doesn't want to leave with more than a 20% during his 8 years. Look at the DJI chart from Oct 9 til today.

Same with keeping Nasdaq at 1500. They don't want it to be more than a 40% loss.

The markets are as rigged as any Casino. Play at your own foolish risk.

I say let Mitch and his gang filibuster. Filibuster, filibuster, filibuster, until 75% of America wants their heads stuck on a pike. It won't take long given the economy.
  • Mark in Florida · 11 months ago
McConnel is irrelevant and out of touch. He needs to go. For someone who had to fight for his seat, McConnel is acting pretty 'uppity'.

Sidebar: Is he in the closet? What is his deal. He strikes me as gayer than a pink Easter bunny.
  • Gridlock · 11 months ago
We SHOULD know where the money is going.. there should be safeguards and procedures in place to track it all.
  • Rufus · 11 months ago
No one has suggested that the stimulus money go into a black hole LIKE the bank/Wall Street money.
  • cowboyneok · 11 months ago
Democrats need to shut their obstructionist asses down NOW! No playing games anymore. Elections have consequences, and they've had free reign for far too long. If Democrats can allow the huge nationalization of banks and other help to businesses that are "too large to fail" to stave off economic disaster then Republican obstructionism shouldn't be allowed to prevent stimulus.

There's really no reason to get worked up.

After Jan 20 we'll get the crisis Biden promised (nuke war between Pak & India and/or nuclear 9/11 in US) and Obama will transform into the American Dictator he's been groomed to be since his birth to intel asset incubator Stanley Dunham.

    To Roost!
  • pdxprobert · 11 months ago
"intel asset incubator..." where do you get that from? please explain...
  • No Hope In Politics · 11 months ago
Obama's mother was a CIA asset.

Studied Marxism in Hawaii & had baby with Kenyan in US on US 'scholarship.'

Married/allowed adoption of Barry by Indonesian military official who became Mobil Oil's gov't relations man.

Worked for USAID, Ford Foundation (CIA fronts).

    Barry's educational background (spook schools).

His '81 trip to Pakistan where he stayed with the Chandoo brothers & Muhammad Samroo, who became Pak Prez when Musharaff resigned in 8/2008:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Mian_Soomro

His coterie of CFR/Neocon,-lib buddies (Brzezinski, Adelman, Fukuyama, Murdoch, etc.).

    Obama = Manchurian Candidate.

But so was McCain, and Bush, and Gore, and Clinton, and Bush...

    Obama's a born & bred 'Company Man.'

USA! CIA! CFR! PNAC! (Initials here)!

    Have you really?
  • No Hope In Politics · 11 months ago
    Indeed.

Which is why no one has assailed what I've written with controverting evidence.

Though I welcome any & all to attempt to do so.

    Go for it.

You lost a fair amount of credibility by using wikipedia as a reference. Could you show me your other sources?
  • thingwarbler · 11 months ago
So, business as usual. We'll get a couple of weeks worth of grandstanding from Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi; they'll thump their chests and talk about lines in the sand and the gravity of the situation. Then they'll declare that they're ready to compromise if the GOP is, then they'll keep on compromising without noticing they're getting nothing in return, and before long they'll have given the GOP exactly what they want. When that then turns out to be the predictable disaster that anything tainted by the GOP inevitably does, the GOP can throw their hands up in despair and claim that, well, it was a Democratic plan that they reluctantly went along with.

It'd be hilarious if we hadn't seen it for over a decade. We really can't afford to let Nancy & Harry continue to pretend they're merely running the shuffle board contest at the country club where their pathetic inability to stand up for anything wouldn't have consequences. I don't much care if Mitch stays or goes -- that's for the GOP to decide. But I do think the Democrats need to decide who is going to steer this ship clear. If we stick with the same lame crew who thru their inaction, indifference and incompetence allowed the GOP to get us this far off course, then we're pretty much screwed.

Alas, the only person who could possibly throw some weight around and insist that his own party shape up or else just chose to show all us dirty fucking hippies who expected real change a thing or two when he picked Rick Warren to thump his Bible at the inauguration...
  • cab02149 · 11 months ago
McConnell is not capable of thinking this up on his own. He is doing pussy for the PNAC crowd, those who would resurrect the old arguments used against the Roosevelt administration in 1933. This time it is just for show and a little "F##K You" from a number of Wall Street republicans who actually think this financial catastrophe can be solved without government help or regulation if given the time. This too is the same baloney as Roosevelt had to put up with.
  • whomod · 11 months ago
but i'm sure if he'd say he's for gay marriage and gives ' milk ' a thumbs up all would be forgiven. Then we could go back to the anti- Obama tirades of last week again.
  • No Hope In Politics · 11 months ago
    Anti-Obama?

    Or anti-bigotry?

Or does your reading comprehension level / blind allegiance not allow you to understand the difference?

    Bingo.

    Go pierce yerself.
  • Wind River · 11 months ago
is it time to implement the "nuclear option" to rid the Senate of the 60 vote filibuster rule, which the conservative activists used to champion ?
  • gerry · 11 months ago
Because giving away money without safeguards is only acceptable when Republicans do it.
  • No Hope In Politics · 11 months ago
Nothing can stop another 'Depression' (read: Reality Check).

Mortgaging your grandchildren isn't going to stop it.

Supporting Bipartisan Fascism won't stop it.

It's going to happen no matter what.

    Bowing to blue donkeys?

    Hating red elephants?

    Please, just stop that.

    Start arming yourself.

    You'll truly need that.
  • Bush_Bites · 11 months ago
I hope Rahm's been loading up.

He's going to need a War Room to push the plan to the American public, especially in the Red States.

He's going to need some good Capitol Hill people ready to twist arms.

And he's going to need all the dirt he can find on McConnel, Boehner and the rest of the Republic Dirt Bags.
  • Bush_Bites · 11 months ago
    BTW:

Somebody posted on an open thread here a few days ago that the RNC is looking for economists who will speak against the need for a stimulus plan and infrastructure improvements.

They've been working on this for quite awhile.
  • Older_Wiser · 11 months ago
Yes, all this "bipartisan" talk is just that--talk. Esp. in light of Chip Saltsman's "xmas gift" and McConnell's bullshit, among other happenings with Rethugs.

And now that everyone who works for a living is broke, the economy is in shreds, jobs are going away, etc., etc., who the hell is Terry McAuliffe raising $50 million from to run for gov of VA? Oh yeah...from now on I guess the rich are going to fund elections of their choices.

I liked it better when my sham vote "counted" for something...
  • Chris From Maine · 11 months ago
something tells me you compare the Clinton library fund records and the McAuliffe fundraising list and there would be a lot of crossovers.
  • Chris From Maine · 11 months ago
If past is prologue, McConnell will get his way, the Democrats will change the bill to whatever he wants, then they will pass it, no Repubs will vote for it, then the Repubs will attack the Dems for voting for it.

Its really sad how weak the Democrats are, when we need them the most, they are completely worthless.
  • Indigo · 11 months ago
I doubt that McConnel intends to obstruct Obama directly anymore than Israel is deliberately trying to start World War Three. It could happen anyway.
  • MNUSA · 11 months ago
Never underestimate the power of the Repubs to screw the voters and ensure their CEO power base get what they want. That's why we're in the mess we're in - no oversight when the Repubs were the majority.
  • Older_Wiser · 11 months ago
Over 300 Palestinians dead, 1400 wounded. Israel has promised to "finish the job"; of course, they mean they won't leave a living Palestinian, or one who wants to live.

Bush says nothing. He is still president until 1/20/09. He's going to let Cheney handle it, you betcha.

(almost) no one is saying anything. it's insane. it's kind of creepy, too. when we invaded iraq, the world spoke out against it, and rightly so. isreal is a different beast, apparently.

I seem to recall "Republican breaks" creating the circumstances that led to 911 while the party's gas pedal gifted us with this 2nd Great Depression...No one gets quite as shrill and red-faced as Miss Mitch facing the prospect of mud splattered pantaloons though she does get points for amazingly hypocritical presumption...
    Stay shrill, girrrrl!
  • Gorgonzola · 11 months ago
McConnels motives are not hard to divine. Conservatives believe they are on the threshhold of realizing their dream. By driving the country down in an economic spiral they hope to get rid of the government programs that they dispise; public education, Social Security, Medicare, Medicade, NLRB, SEC, IRS and the rest.
  • Smitty · 11 months ago
John, the republicans do NOT have a filibuster-proof 41 votes. According to the constitution, the senate sets it's own rules. The majority party can change it's rules by a simple up and down majority vote. This vote cannot be filibustered. All Harry Reid needs to do is have the bollocks to call for a vote to change senate rules, which happened back in the 60s. They used to have to have 67 votes to break a filibuster but the Democrats were ready to eliminate the filibuster altogether and the republicans settled on a 60 vote compromise.
  • RainbowPhoenix · 11 months ago
As if that spineless coward would actually do that. Besides, couldn't the republicans filibuster this vote too?
  • smallhandff · 11 months ago
But isn't that the "nucular option" we heard all too much about last year?
  • Smitty · 11 months ago
The republicans had enough b*lls to use it. The only reason that they didn't was that seven Democratic senators made an agreement with the republicans that they'd stop any filibusters if they didn't drop the filibuster rule. It's a shame the democrats haven't got the same b*lls that the republicans do or they'd use the same tactic. BTW, it was in 2005 instead of last year.

I see that Anderson Cooper is criticizing Rachel Maddow for being to sarcastic. Well, we need more Rachel's and Kieth Olbermanns and Jon Stewarts to **loudly** identify crap in Washington. So how much time has Cooper spent on exposing McConnell's stuff? Or, how much time did he spend exposing the Bush's run up to the war in Iraq?

If the MSM people had done their job, we might not have invaded Iraq.

I like Cooper but he seems so much a part of the establishment, I don't look to him for objectivity.
  • KarenMrsLloydRichards · 11 months ago
AC is a craven little bitch who can't hold a candle intellectually, or even on basic command of the issues, to Maddow. He thinks this trash talk against a rival will ingratiate himself with his corporate masters, who demand that he be the craven little bitch that he is.
  • A.Political · 11 months ago
Excellent comment, I would also add he is an opportunist of the highest order.
  • MNUSA · 11 months ago
I like Anderson Cooper, too, but he is too afraid of presenting the truth. He seems to think that truth is relative or there are two truths to everything. Maddow is biased, but when she interviews someone with an opposing viewpoint, she can cut through the talking points and try to get them to offer an intelligent answer. Viewers deserve no less from any of the networks. Cooper was at his best during Katrina, when he showed real outrage at the incompetence of all levels of government.
  • tas · 11 months ago
The only hope of any recovery for the GOP is to force the economy to the ground and blame it on Dems. If Obama and the Dems are successful, the GOP is doomed for aqt least 30 years. So, they hope to destroy any chance of success, no matter the damage they do because, as they have demonstrated time and time again, our nation means nothing to them, only their own power.
  • dan · 11 months ago
the government is broke, they cannot possibly provide real stimulus
  • tas · 11 months ago
maybe it's time to start wooing some R's into the Senate Democratic fold with some rewards of chairmanships. Kinda like the R's did after Reagan's election.
  • dances with beagles · 11 months ago
Well we knew Mitch and his merry band would oppose the stimulus plan. Just wait until you see how many Democratic senators directly oppose, distance themselves, or do absolutely nothing for the stimulus plan.
  • Smitty · 11 months ago
You already have a few Democrats voting with the republicans. I know there's several but the only two that I can think of right now are max baucus, senator from Montana and Blanche Lincoln, senator from Walmart.
  • frozennorthobserver · 11 months ago
Hey OB hows that crap on the left and suck up to rightwing workin' for ya?
  • MNUSA · 11 months ago
It would be really nice if the Democrats built specific goals, benchmarks, openness, and accountability into the stimulus bill unlike the bank bail-out bill that was just another boondoggle. It would be nice if they'd take the time to do it right (perhaps our elected officials could read the legislation). Sell it to us taxpayers and voters first. If we don't buy into it, neither should our representatives. The Repubs can take their chances if voters buy into it. Another election will occur in less than 2 years. But personally, I'm sick of our government throwing billions around like it was confetti. I'm sick of their half-baked legislation that omits a paper trail and accountability.
  • vkobaya · 11 months ago
These are the same vile, disgusting, rotten, evil stinkers who are now telling us that FDR's New Deal prolonged the Depression and without FDR it would never have gotten as bad as it did, would only have been a recession lasting a a few months. What would you expect from such criminals? As far as I'm concerned, Pelosi and Reid are criminal too for pretending there is nothing wrong these guys, just politics as usual. All of them, including Damnocrats deserve to have their heads rolling down the streets in a river of blood.
  • Mark in Florida · 11 months ago
All I can say is, I want Mitch McConnell as far away as possible from my stimulus package. Ick.
