AMERICAblog: Gov. Sanford admits affair with "dear, dear friend" in Argentina

  • mikeyDe · 6 months ago
I'm rethinking my position against the Defense of Marriage Act. We should ban opposite-sex marriage until the Republicans figure out how it works. Until then, it's a threat to my would-be, same-sex marriage.
  • therepguy · 6 months ago
Mikey that a great idea... maybe we should dump the ML for a clearler solution... a CU for one and all!
  • TrueBleuCA · 6 months ago
Protect my California same-sex marriage from these hypocritical self-righteous, right wing nutjob politicians. Get your own house in order and keep your soiled hands off my marriage.

Mark Sanford needs to resign now. And if he doesn't resign, let's see if the South Carolina legislature will live up to their end of responsibility by impeaching this self-righteous, faux Christian, wife cheating low-life!

Goddamn gays ruin another sacred marriage!

    Laughing my ass off!!!
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 6 months ago
so... it WAS a guy he hooked up with in Argentina then?
  • woodroad34 · 6 months ago
A friend used to tell me, "if you want to get a date, stand next to an ugly, older person. You'll look better by comparison". I think that could be restated to say, "if you want to feel good about yourself, stand next to a Republican. You'll feel clean, moral, and righteous by comparison".
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 6 months ago
I like that! tell your friend I'm borrowing it :-)
  • woodroad34 · 6 months ago
Give him a drink and he'll spew more pithy sayings....
  • Milli · 6 months ago
Give him a break. So his penis accidentally fell into her vagina. Could happen to anyone.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 6 months ago
well... yeah! I mean, that's what happened to larry craig ALL the time in the mens room... the floors are slippery, kept falling and just reaching out to grab something to balance himself... it just happened to be a penis.
  • therepguy · 6 months ago
After the last 8 years... Republican don't get breaks!
  • Butch1 · 6 months ago
Yea, but to continue to fall into it all year? This man is really unlucky. ;-)
  • dacnova · 6 months ago
When the GOP hypocrites start talking about preserving marriage, our automatic response needs to be along the lines of "Why aren't you protecting your own?"
  • doandme · 6 months ago
I have to live in this shithole state and listen to the ASSHOLE all the time. His wife should beat him to death with a yankee slugger. What a piece of shit to leave on fathers day weekend to go see the other hole he so enjoys. Let him rot and can I say....IMPEACH his redneck ass
  • SCLiberal · 6 months ago
As another trapped in this state, I totally agree.
  • stldem · 6 months ago
Marriage is sacred and must only be between a man and a woman. Right! Ha!

I understand that people make mistakes and don't always behave in a moral way. But, what I DO resent is that Republicans berate any one not adhering to rigid "Christian Values", when they are as guilty as anyone for behaving inappropriately. They just have the convenient fallback response that because they are christian they will be forgiven. Disgusting.
  • mikeyDe · 6 months ago
"Marriage is sacred and must only be between a man and a woman."

Marriage is sacred and must only be between a man and a woman and his Bible study group.
  • Butch1 · 6 months ago
They are worse. We are'nt going around pontificating what marriage should be or not be.
  • judybrowni · 6 months ago
    Favorite line:
"I saw her three times during the, the whole sparking thang."

Woo, he blew off governance of a state, his marriage, and his family on Father's Day, for three bouts, at best, of intercourse.

But gays aren't responsible enough to marry.
  • JohnVisser · 6 months ago
Appartently I have misunderstood the definition of "traditional marriage" - I thought they meant one man and one woman. But alas, it's one man and TWO women. Wait, isn't that polygamy. Dammit I'm confused. Will somebody please explain to me what exactly the right wing is saying?

Shut up! Do they really do that? Do you have a link to videos?
  • Zorba · 6 months ago
You know, two in one week is a hoot (except for their wives and children). It's not like the Democrats are all as pure as the driven snow (Eliot, is that you?), but they don't generally very volubly clothe themsleves in the Family-Values-Sanctity-of-One-Man-One-Woman-Marriage cloak. What utter hypocrisy. I'm glad that Mrs. Sanford didn't "stand by" him during the public "confession" (unlike so many of the wronged wives) and I hope she divorces the son of a bitch.
  • PattyP · 6 months ago
Spitzer at least had the decency to immediately resign. He shouldn't have.
  • Zorba · 6 months ago
Ensign hasn't resigned. "Diaper Dave" Vitter didn't resign. "Toe Tapping Larry" Craig didn't resign (although he didn't stand for re-election). Spitzer was better than any of them, by far. Not that I condone what he did, either- bad enough to break your marriage vows. but consorting with prostitutes (even "high end" ones) leads to increased exposure to STD's, which puts his wife at risk.
  • okojo · 6 months ago
Spitzer had to resign. He was involved in a Federal Investigation, with wiretaps of him ordering call girls besides records of payments. He couldn't manage as Governor of New York, with the Post and Daily News making his life completely miserable, and having the Republicans scoring political points. Spitzer was very lucky he wasn't indicted or lose his law license for his actions.

Senator Craig should had resigned, or at least been kicked out or censured by the Senate. Vitter was just being a creep. The difference between Vitter and Spitzer was the paper trail. Vitter could had easily been indicted if there were better records of his connection to the call girl ring besides his phone number with the madam.

Ensign may have to resign if these potential lawsuits against him by the Hamptons are very damaging. Firing an employee or making them leave because the ending of an affair is not good.
  • Zorba · 6 months ago
    Excellent points all, Okojo.
  • Butch1 · 6 months ago
I have the feeling their sex life ended a long time ago.
  • okojo · 6 months ago
Spitzer did the right thing by resigning, mainly he had to fight the potential criminal charges against him and resigning put the spotlight off his family. If he continued to be governor, it would had been murder for his family.

It was probably good that his call girl history came out, because he was a potential candidate for US Attorney General whether Clinton or Obama became President.

It would had been a nightmare for Spitzer to try to govern with criminal indictments hanging over him, The Feds had him over a barrel, with the wiretaps and money trail.
  • KerrynowCampau · 6 months ago
Who was the other one this week?
  • HereinDC · 6 months ago
    Ensign from Nevada
  • KerrynowCampau · 6 months ago
I don't know how I missed that! It is becoming such a common news story (right wing figure found with man/woman/child/goat...) I don't pay too much attention.

Stewart skewered Sanford last night when it was thought that the gov went for a walk in the woods, tonight's show is basically writing itself.

can we just end the "family values" bullsh*t hypocracy right now? seriously, there is no such thing. both sides--D and R and fallible human beings who end up catering to their desires. no more of this "holier than thou" garbage, especially from the R's

and to go throw this whole "hiking" charade for a piece of tail. at least spitzer had the cojones to go to a pro--a pro will keep their damn mouth shut, that's why you pay them (to paraphrase Sheen, C.)
  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
Yea, and the immediate media reaction was the man should get a measure of forgiveness for coming clean on national teevee! No shit! AFTER GETTING CAUGHT IN A DAMNED LIE ABOUT THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL?!!? That is called "coming clean?" !!! The media need to have their butts kicked, and THIS reaction was on MSNBC. I'm sure at FOX NEWS they are probably asking their viewers to send Sanford flowers and candy.
  • davidkingofall · 6 months ago
No, at Fox News their reaction was to label Sanford as a Democrat.

Legally, he did not have sex with that woman.
  • SkippyFlipjack · 6 months ago
exactly, which is why the answer was so weaselly
  • okojo · 6 months ago
Spitzer was just as reckless as Sanford. He was doing this while doing some big political battles with Wall Street. This is just about guys who feel they are kind of invulnerable, and very arrogant. Governor Sanford should had filed for divorce, and then go down to Buenos Aires for his week long shag session, instead of humiliating his family. He should had the dignity of telling his wife his marriage is over in private months in advance rather disclosing it after being caught with his pants down.

You know, maybe this an opportunity for the marriage equality to use these ADULTERERS who talk about "sanctity of marriage" yet they are being hypocritical with the way they conduct their own marriage.

EVERYONE who defends marriage between a man and woman yet does not live to that should be exposed as frauds.

    Sanford on the issues:
Sanford said marriage should be defined as one man and one woman.
Sanford voted yes on an amendment banning adoptions in District of Columbia by gays or other individuals who are not related by blood or marriage.
He strongly favors prayer in public schools.
He believes drug use is immoral
    In short: HYPOCRITE

Too bad that Gingrich, McCain and Giuliani were not the last three standing in the race for the GOP presidential nomination in 2008. Then we could have pointed out that between them, the three finalists had had a total of eight wives.
  • woodroad34 · 6 months ago
you forgot the mistresses (some of which turned out to be wives after the ailing first wife died--McCain, Gingrich). For anti-welfare types, these corrupt, amoral, selfish and sociopathic idiots sure have a 'gimme' point of view.
  • jpjones · 6 months ago
McCain and Gingrich didn't wait for the ailing wives to die - they just dumped them and left them to fend for themselves.

I get your point -- but this is funnier -- the pious preachers of morality and ethics just get more outrageous and now they're really going all to HELL!

I get that same feeling. It was all "where in the world is Mark Sanford"...wife couldn't care less...hiking..then on to something exotic...escaping the humiliation of losing a court case on rejecting stimulus money... and now it's all laissez-faire turning into laissez-affair. *gag*

The guy, as well as other republicans talk about morality and christian values and try injecting those into the culture and that's the issue.. I never heard eliot spitzer talk about the abomination of homsexuality or god's law or christian law, but these adulterering philandering republicans, cheat and lie all the while they are trashing gays, and other minorities.
    SHameful!!!!

    erip,

You are 100% right. Just listen to the talking heads swoon about what a stand up guy Sanford is, how admired he is for coming forward, etc... I think he spent 5 days getting schooled in how to win friends when you're exposed as another Republican lying f&%^ing fraud. And it's working! This is the major Media's Gomer Pyle moment in South Carolina.

Downside... Palin can now wipe Mark Sanford away as a potential 2012 contender.
  • cervantes · 6 months ago
Spitzer did prosecute prostitution rings. So he was in fact hypocritical in a substantive way the directly engaged his responsibilities as a public servant. Just sayin' . . .
  • okojo · 6 months ago
His staff instead of putting water on the speculation on the Governor's disappearance, put large drums of gasoline on the rumors, and just admitted what was going on, it would turn out to be so hilarious.

I actually have a little sympathy for the guy, given Portenas are very tempting, but he already has a family in a bible belt state, and there is no way he is going to get away with this.

Also admitting this now in public is basically a nice embarrassment to his wife who tried to cover for him.

I have a feeling his marriage is over...

you don't disappear for a week, over FATHER'S DAY to prove how strong your marriage is. that was essentially a big f-you to his wife and family.

he knew he was going there, over a family holiday, to screw his 'friend'... this guy's relationship is toast.

one other thing (not shown in the short version of the interview), someone asked if he ended it... he didn't say yes.
  • okojo · 6 months ago
Announcing his affair and taking this brazen step, is basically shooting the divorce summons across the wife's bow. He is in love, and he feels he can cross the rubicon now. Nothing gives a guy courage more than 96 hours of non stop shagging...

This is just too hilarious, I just wish all of this happened in 2000, so our great country wouldn't be in such the mess it is in now because of the Republicans.

She is probably kind of sore right now, and will do an exclusive for a couple advil and some ice packs.
  • SkippyFlipjack · 6 months ago
I didn't think it was creepy. I thought he did a decent job with a hard press conference and incredibly actually admitted in plain english that he'd had an affair. no denials, no word parsing, no dragging his family up there with him. you don't want to give a guy too much credit for simply doing the right thing, but few politicians in his situation -- and there are a lot of them -- own up to their mistakes like he did.
  • TrueBleuCA · 6 months ago
Forget the affair. He abandoned his state responsibility, lied about it and to top it off left his 4 sons home without a father on Fathers' Day. There is no excuse. Plain and simple.
  • okojo · 6 months ago
It sounds like the marriage was over for some time, and he finally had cajones to cross the rubicon. however he nows has to wear the Scarlett Letter, a big huge "H" as in Hypocrisy.

Perhaps his Portena hotties is a secret Obama agent, who is knocking off all his potential 2012 rivals?
  • HereinDC · 6 months ago
"...you don't want to give a guy too much credit for simply doing the right thing,"

Do you actually think he gave a truthful news conference?

WHY would you NOT be with your kids on Father's Day?

There is much much more to this story.
  • hrh · 6 months ago
Or is he just as dumb as Sarah Palin? Remember her "Wild Ride" (from TX to AK) desperate fabrication to coverup a previous lie when she was allegedly pregnant.

Or is he simply controlled by his dick?
  • SkippyFlipjack · 6 months ago
The guy was out banging some woman in Argentina for a year and you think that being away from his kids on Father's Day is a misdeed that requires some explanation?

If you watched the press conference, you would have seen a guy who looked contrite and straight-forward. I suppose there might be more to the story but I'm not sure what else you think he's covering up.

My point though is not that he was honest by enumerating every one of his life's sins, but that he came right out and owned up to a couple serious and embarrassing ones. And sadly, that's not something politicians are good at.
  • JamesR · 6 months ago
You have a point - it was a masterfully even-toned appearance of honesty. It might have actually been honesty. However:

#1 The best liars are the ones who believe it as they say it yet are just as quick to do a 180 degree turn.

#2 The guy has JUST DONE a 180 degree turn because

#3 He is only doing this because he GOT CAUGHT,

#(All of them together) The proof of his sincerity is denied by the timing - so soon and so forced upon him, and the very fact he can be so certain in his course, that is so different than his previous course, is rather inhuman. Or better: insane.

He is rationally, "honestly" describing a situation where just a few days ago he had been acting rashly, impulsively, irresponsibly and immorally - does this make him more rational, less impulsive, more responsible now? 24 hours or so later??

    NO.

Therefore, performance - very very good performance - to the contrary, he must be a big fat liar, and somewhat of a sociopath because of his facility with the process. I wouldn't want him driving a cab much less a State.

He IS a good actor. Hell - Reagan was a GREAT actor. 'Nuff said.
  • SkippyFlipjack · 6 months ago
Someone asked "Are you and your wife separated?" and he made a joke like "well.. in that I'm here and she's not here right now.." and added that no, they weren't technically separated. now his wife today says she kicked him out two weeks ago, as a "trial separation" (though she believes he is proving that he wants to come back). if the question were asked of me, I'd say that. he kind of hedged. so you're right, he wasn't being fully honest.

Decency would have been admitting to his family a year ago that he was in love with someone else. He abandoned his responsibilities to his state and lied about it right up through this morning. He only came clean (and we don't know how much more there is to the story) because the press was all over this. He was backed into a corner and his cover story was so preposterous and easy to deconstruct that he had no choice. Sorry, no credit.

Hey, let me be the first to defend Governor Sanford...

Argentine Women (especially Portenas) are incredibly hot, at least he has good taste..

Oh, yeah the hypocrisy badge is so bright right now, it takes away from lusting after portenas, but If I was living in an oppressed Bible belt state with lots of fried foods, I would be putting on Carlos Gardel songs and dreaming of Dolce and Gabanna wearing Portenas.

When I was in Chile, half the people asked me why did Clinton have to pick such a dumpy woman as his mistress, he could at least pick someone better.
  • therepguy · 6 months ago
Argentine Women (especially Portenas) are incredibly hot... BUT THOSE MEN ARE JUST THAT MUCH MORE... HOT AS HELL AND VERY PLAYFUL!
  • okojo · 6 months ago
I wasn't paying atttention to the Porteno Hombres, I was worried of hitting lamposts from gawking at Portenas. I also thought Argentina was the Death Star in the Vegan Universe given the amount of leather worn and amount of meat in the diet.

How Argentine Men practice Tango dancing for years was outside the bars was to dance with other men to refine their dance steps.
  • JamesR · 6 months ago
Maybe he was crying so much because he thought he was getting a "Portena" and really found he got the guy who just snared Castro's son...

    A transexual from Argentina?

Were there any dead tannys found in a hotel room in Argentina?

Oh please tell me they are going to get married. This will show the hypocrisy of the American immigration system. He will be able to sponsor his "wife" for residency while gays, in commit relationships for years, have no such rights.
  • twostepcub · 6 months ago
Well, he can always go to the Senate. At least there he'll get a standing ovation....

Abd yes, enough already about how humanizing and heartfelt his apology is. He left the f-ng state with no plan or no notice. That would get you fired from any job. If he's not resigning, he needs to be impeached for dereliction of duty.

The infidelty thing is a whole separate issue, and goes to show the "holy roller crowd" again are overcompensating for their own sins.
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 6 months ago
the state? he left the f-ing COUNTRY!
  • twostepcub · 6 months ago
LOL i actually meant South Carolina had no plan or notice. But true, how the F do you just decide to leave the country like that? And WHO PAID?
  • SkippyFlipjack · 6 months ago
Someone asked that in the press conference (who paid) and he said he did
  • Soundboy_jeff_meanie · 6 months ago
someone else asked if he ended it... he didn't say yes.

um.. OK. I'm not sure what you're rebutting.
  • BeccaM · 6 months ago
They impeached Bill Clinton for a whole lot less than what Gov. Sanford did.

Let's start with the personal use of a South Carolina government vehicle, abandoning his post as governor to go (literally) incommunicado and work our way down from there.

Oh, I forgot: IOKIYAR (it's okay if you are Republican). Silly me.

Bill Clinton's blowjob cost America 8 years of bush and fashist republican bull shit!

A bit costly if you ask me!

"FOX News labeled the Sanford a Democrat."

    But of course!

It's reflexive at this point, one of theirs fucks up, they instantly label him (her?) a Democrat, for conservatives viewers with a short memory (which may work, since Fox has a very heavy senile-age viewer base.)
  • tlsintx · 6 months ago

I'm not liking the immediate knee jerk, "Oh, what a big man he is for coming clean on National TeeVee!" from the mainstream media. How much more tone deaf can you be? This is about HYPOCRISY!

He immediately starting preaching as a DAMNED CRUTCH and the mainstream media immediately bought it. Some are starting to question it, but I'm sick to death of "Better than Thou!" Republicans getting an immediate knee jerk benefit of the doubt when they get caught in this shit.
  • therepguy · 6 months ago
    Ament to that!
  • woodroad34 · 6 months ago
I have to wonder why he's doing it at all. I know he finally told everyone he went to Argentina for an exotic nervous-breakdown getaway. Who's threatening him that he had to disclose this? There's something more going on...perhaps on TMZ?
  • mikeyDe · 6 months ago
Sanford is an entrepreneur. Maybe someone tweeted him while he was in Argentina with the news that Bush will get 13K per page in his book deal. Book deal, film rights, his own line of sex toys.

  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
Why do Family Value's Republicans like Senator Ensign and Governor Sanford get to pay less taxes than those of us in the LGBT community who have more stable marriages?
  • JamesR · 6 months ago
Good point. Also I am not hearing this difference pointed out much, yet, that these two instances involved married men boinking married women - that is they are wrecking TWO marriages, each. So far. The media are caring about the Senator and the Governor, and their wives, and not the husband(s) of their liaisons. Tacky.
  • jpjones · 6 months ago

Ya know, this could be a great opportunity for Obama to save face on his DADT/DOMA screwups and just announce he was wrong and he's going to seriously push for marriage equality and full gay rights. He could even throw in some biting sarcasm, such as "I've realized that gays should have the same right as straight people to cheat on their spouses!" It really makes me sick that Americans put up with these hypocrites. Have some backbone Obama! Admit you were wrong, fix the problem, and I, for one, will forgive you.

Why didn't Sanford just come out and say what he's really thinking: "Screw you, ya bunch of South Carolina trailer park dimwits! Yeah I've got a girlfriend down in Argentina and I've been bangin' her for years. So what if I'm doing it on the state's dime. I deserve it. And I'm gonna keep right on bangin' her because I'm a good Republican, a better husband and the best Christian you'll ever know. So, shut the fuck up before I call out the National Guard on your indignant ass."

    From CNN:
"The South Carolina governor has had a bruising year, losing his fight to turn down $700 million in federal stimulus money. Sanford initially tried to require that any stimulus money pay down the state debt, a stance rejected by the Obama administration."

My hypothesis, considering the current economic collapse on the horizon for the US, is that Gov. Sanford took time to understand and research the economic collapse of Argentina which happened much like the current events in the US.

"Argentina quickly lost the confidence of investors and the flight of money away from the country increased."
