AMERICAblog: Great list of commitments from Obama on his civil rights page at Change.gov

". . . our job is to hold him to his commitments." That too, definitely. Our job is to go ahead do it. Live our lives without compromise or double talk. Just go be gay! That's our job. We can go ahead and do that, we don't need to ask permission. Just do it! The rest will follow . . . or we'll be in the interment camps. It's one of those.

More news: In California the Attorney General has filed his brief in regards to Prop 8, asking the court not to stay the Proposition, but to rule on the six lawsuits against it as soon as possible. The high court could rule as early as later this month or next month.
And a group of generals have petitioned Barack Obama to end the military's Don't-Ask/Don't-Tell policy. Obama has replied that he needs first to consult with others in the military. All this raises the question of how we treat the people who serve in uniform. We say we honor them. However we show them the greatest disrespect if we tell them that they must not even mention their liftstyle if they happen to be gay. And if we do lift the DA/DT policy, then we will be saying that we respect them enough to serve their country, but yet do not think them worthy of the state of matrimony. You may give up your life for America, but you may not marry the person you love.
Interesting development...when he first put change.gov up, there was no mention anywhere of GLBT issues. In fact, a search of the website using it's own search engine and the word "Gay" didn't show any links. The site was down for a few days, scrubbed and now it's back and has this.
I'm glad we are included now. Me thinks there was a lot of 'behind the scenes' stuff going on, probably none more effective than the Prop 8 backlash...

I'm not going to hold my breath, not only because I don't look good in blue--but because I remember how we headed into the Clinton administration with high expectations that only ended up giving us "Don't Ask/Don't Tell." The Right-Wing can be a huge, monstrous, ravenous beast when it's aroused, and these kind of commitments will likely rouse that beast at its ugliest.
That said, I'm going to hold on to hope anyway. Maybe, just maybe ... this time justice will prevail.

Remember, Wester, we have the House and Senate now. No, excuses this time.

it's just as important to live life with no regrets as it is to have hope for the future.
dagnabbit, I WANT to be PROUD to be an American again - and I hope #44 is going to be 180 degrees from #43.
hang in there my brothers and sisters. I only hope and pray we'll all get there together in one piece.
man, woman, gay, straight, whatever the heck - we are ALL human beings who DESERVE the equality and justice that is SUPPOSED to be what this here country of ours was/is all about.
I, for one, am sick and tired of the despair I've felt so keenly for eight years now.

yes, we must hold our leaders to their word. that said: I grow MORE hopeful with every step.
face the fact: it would have made our President-elect's campaign all the more arduous to have made LBGT issues a major platform issue (as far as some of our less-enlightened citizens are concerned) and although that makes me sad, I truly believe that we just may have turned a major corner in the struggle for what is only right and fair for ALL.
ya gotta keep the faith, baby!

I don't think you will see a big gay rights agenda in the first term, just my opinion. The pending depression will get nearly all the attention as it should. The remaining attention will go to Iraq/Afghanistan as it should. Barack knows he cannot push a big gay rights agenda in the first term and get reelected, thats why Clinton compromised with DADT.

you're probably correct. the clean-up after the child pResident is going to be immense and neither easily nor quickly accomplished.
Caribou Barbie in the Rethug spotlight will do wonders as far as ensuring a second Obama term. she's had a taste of it and damned if she's going to let go anything soon.. although I can't stand the sight of her or the sound of her voice, I say.. GOOD!
