AMERICAblog: Gustav soon to be Category 5 hurricane

  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
I had checked the weather reports about 30 minutes ago and all I could say is "OMG". It is unbelievable that another Catergory 5 hurricane could strike this area. I hope and pray that the people of the area take heed and evacuate. I read that New Orleans has provided 7,000 seats on Amtrak for the elderly.

    Got the cake and guitar.

Bush and McCain are all ready.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Wonder if Crazy Bobby Jindahl will try to exorcise the Hurricane Demons?
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
Speaking of exorcising hurricane demons, where's Glasses Guy? He could do that.

Yesterday, FOX was saying it would never become more than a category 3. Wonder why they'd want us to watch the convention instead?

Bush has to make the Convention. He can't remember a single mistake he has made....so why not wait a week before responding this time?
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
I just hope Condi has enough shoes.

Hope Bush tries to show us how Obama would have responded.
  • ADLEED · 1 year ago
Now that he is needed where is Hagee? Do you thing a Cat. 7 may get McCain to call him?
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
Probably walking around Denver wondering where all the rain went.
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
I'm sure Pelosi is keeping a close eye on the money that was sent to NOLA.

Mary Landrieu became all but a Republican after getting all that cash.

    John

Now might be a good time to re-post McClellan's "twofer" remarks.
  • EmGD · 1 year ago
Call the Minneapolis cake shops John, so you and Bush can hold a "Sorry you got destroyed again New Orleans" cake that you can both hold and look sad with. You know, to show you've learned since the last time. No grins this time.

I wonder how long it will take McCain and his token to visit New Orleans and make it look as if they really care about the "brown" people's suffering.
I am sure they will take a break in the convention to display some phony concern, as if the last time didn't really happen. This might be their chance to rewrite history.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
They'll probably use it as an opportunity to show Sarah looking like she's taking charge.

Her first words when getting off the plane; "Is it always this hot down here?"
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
I am sure with all her PTA experience she will handle the line for cookies and milk.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    Bush: "Quick! Call Brownie!"
  • HelenaMontana · 1 year ago
I think they'll have to postpone it. Such a pity for them, but even those arrogant thugs woke up a little after Katrina. They just can't afford to have their convention while a hurricane is raging and people are fleeing for their lives. Poor McSenile, first the oil rig, now this. I weep great big crocodile tears.
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
It's god's judgment on the Republican Party.
  • naschkatzehussein · 1 year ago
I don't see how they can do it. Wouldn't it cost them mucho money? The logistics of it all? They will get to keep Bush's mug off the TV though, I'm guessing. And BTW, I am no meteorologist, but can't hurricanes veer off into another direction quite easily? What if it decides to go to Houston? Where is Hannah headed?
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
So, the one on the left is Gustav and the one on the right is Hannah?

I can't see that it really matters where the storm goes, in terms of political considerations. People are going to suffer and people are going to die, whether it hits Houston, New Orleans, Mississippi, or wherever. The GOP, to my mind, just can't afford to be having a big party while that's going on.

But you're absolutely right, it will cost a MINT to reschedule the convention and the theatrics will suffer as a result. I bet a bunch of them wish they could just cancel it altogether so people wouldn't be reminded that they are, in fact, Republicans.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    True.

Seems like a lot of Repubs up for election were trying to avoid going to the convention anyway.
  • ADLEED · 1 year ago
It may veer off, but the the risks of inaction are too great. On Sunday A.M. the meteorologist should have a good read, as within a 150 miles of the "eye" of the storm when it reaches land. The water will likely increase Gustav's speed The past three years have been kind to the Gulf Coast between Mississippi and the Mexican border. A later hurricane was slowed and disbursed by the land mass between the Gulf and populated areas; I do hope I am very wrong!!!!!

(Grew up in the region & they are kinda overdue; this is compounded by the fact that the levees in New Orleans were rebuilt/repaired to Cat. 3 standards, and the nearby lightly populated and poor areas have not recovered. Their is too little land between them and the Gulf to blunt the water from a Cat.5 or the push of 130+mph winds. DAMM, I do not like these thought!)
  • doug · 1 year ago
Don't worry. It's all in God's hands. Let the neo-con convention proceed!
  • bunnyjump · 1 year ago
If it hits New Orleans again, the f-ing repugs are going to use this as an excuse to cut funding to rebuild NOLA-believe you me. We are going to loose a historically significant city (and one with great food and drinks and music) if the Dems don't capture the White House and Congress.
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
Yeah, the House and Senate are on vacation, so why cancel the convention that's 1000 miles away?

They giving complete refunds for airfare and motel reservations?

I'm sure the McCain canpaign would be happy to do that.
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
Yes, the other hurricane would be later in the week.

guess the RNC should move there convention up to Halloween .
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
    Appropriate.
  • dad · 1 year ago
if i was a republican i'd cancel the convention. gustav would be the perfect excuse.
  • Indigo · 1 year ago
Hurricane Gustav might make landfall on the Tuesday after Labor Day. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Hanna is approaching from the Atlantic with landfall possible the following week. Many people in central Florida remain water-logged from Fay with over 400 houses submerged. This is becoming a rough season.

    THEY CALLED THE WIND, KATRINA
    (apologies, etc)

Away out here they've got a name
For wind and rain and fire
The rain is GUS, the fire is TAV
    Like the Other Wind, KATRINA

    Katrina blew the stars around
    Sent those clouds a-flying
Dubya sat there like a lump
While folks were out there dying

    Katrina, Katrina
    They called the wind Katrina

    Before I knew Katrina's name
    Heard her wails and whining
I had a vile scum president
    And he was always lying
And then one day that president
    Decided to steal a city
Now we're lost, so dark, no, lost
    Not even God can pity

    Katrina, Katrina
    They call the wind Katrina

Out here they've got a name for storms
    Wind and fire and rainy
And when you're lost and all alone
You'll be robbed by Bush & Cheney

Now we're a lost and lonely State
    Authoritarians steal and burn
    Katrina's left, away and gone
    But in Gustav, will return

    Katrina, Katrina
    They call the wind Katrina

    But what we now have...

    ...is GUSTAV
    :(
  • nikto · 1 year ago
GOP Convention should be moved to around mid-November or so.

It's the only way to be sure.
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
As long as McCain's campaign is offering refunds for airfare and motel reservations, it's all good. Anything that costs them money is all good with me.
  • BLOGGING BITCH! · 1 year ago
GOOGLE says Jeb Bush got the contract to supply the pumps to keep NOLA pumped out. Rumor has it that they suck.

    We'll see.
  • lynchie · 1 year ago
This will give them time to get SoccerMom Palin to memorize a few talking points. They can get her a job description and maybe she could pick up a few foreign leaders names. At that point she would know more than Bush did.
Mother nature is basically a bitch. The late George Carlin once did a bit about Mother Nature. His take was that she is always trying to find a way to get rid of us. She can't stand being pissed on every day. He loved the tree huggers whinning about trying to save the earth. He said the earth will be here long after the humanoids are gone. It may not look as it does now, may not have all the species since we are wiping them out at a pretty fast clip, Thanks to Governor Palin for ignoring the Polar Bears. The earth will be here and maybe the only inhabitants will be a few cockroaches and the odd alligator.
Everyone move inland, it is where we will all be living once the ice caps have melted.
  • nicho · 1 year ago
They'll talk about canceling it to appear concerned, but they won't because the cost would be too high and the logistics would be staggering.

Also, the networks would be very unhappy, since they're built their schedules around the dates -- and they don't take kindly to disruptions.

But, more important, the GOP doesn't give a rat's ass about working people suffering and dying. Besides, they will get two big breaks.

    1. They can quadruple the number of preachers who will pray to the invisible sky god, which will make the fundies wet their knickers. They will do it under the guise of asking for help for the hurricane victims.

    2. Any Dem criticism or tough questions from the media will be deflected with "How can you play politics when people are suffering from the tragedy in [fill in the blank]?" They will, of course, play politics 24/7.

    OT

Looks like Gustav is making a little swing to the west and will not directly hit NO
  • nicho · 1 year ago
Actually, going slightly west of NO is the worst-case scenario, since the worst of the storm is on the eastern side. This isn't good news.
  • lynchie · 1 year ago
    this is interesting reading:

    http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4176/is...

MWI's contract included a $5 million incentive to deliver the pumps by the start of the 2006 hurricane season. And Corps officials were under pressure to get New Orleans ready for the season, the first since Katrina flooded 80 percent of New Orleans and revealed deep-seated organizational and engineering troubles within the Corps.

MWI is owned by J. David Eller and his sons. Eller was once a business partner of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in a venture called Bush-El that marketed MWI pumps.

Let us all hope that they work as planned. The Bush's are always making a buck off the backs of others.

Bush is promising Gulf Coast governors his full support. Of course he is: reading left to right, from Texas to Florida, they're Perry, Jindal, Barbour, Riley, and Crist -- all Republicans. When the Democrats' Blanco was governor during Katrina, she couldn't get the time of day from the First Vacationer.

It is truly GOD making his mind up and casting his vote...albeit in a rather dramatic fashion. The Repubs would have concluded the same if the circumstance had been reversed.

We faggots have the power. We can control the weather. It's Labor Day weekend again and Southern Decadence is in NOLA. By gathering a large group of homah-seck-shuls, we can control the wrath of God there. We decided to show our power once again this year. Next week, after our public orgy is over, James Dobson and his buds will be blaming us again.
  • kh7463 · 1 year ago
The only reason they're considering "postponing" the convention is because half the people scheduled to speak on opening day have backed out and aren't going. And Schwarznegger's reason has nothing to do with Gustav.
