We really have become a nation of fucking idiots when ANYONE suggests that Hawaii is exotic or foreign. Oh wait...that's right...real Americans only live in fly over states...yes darlings, they are flyovers....that vast wasteland out here where the main cultural institution is the corner Baptist church choir singing really tacky hymns written by unschooled composers of the early 20th century and the local lighted football stadium with the titty brigade wriggling on Friday nights and makin' all the daddies horny.

I think the term 'fly over" is a pejorative. It means that people going from NY to LA only see these states as insignificant except during election years. I don't think it's geographical.

You know, me and the missus just got back from our vacation in a place called Middle-of-nowhere-Kansas. I can't tell you how much fun we had in the 105 degree heat and the 98% humidity, why some mornings it didn't do any good to towel off after a shower. And fun? Let me tell ya how much the kids and the missus enjoyed the tour of the popcorn manufacturing plant! And there wasn't a palm tree or some exotic bush blocking our view of the incredibly flat countryside that seemed to go on for about a 1,000 miles in any direction! So flat you could look straight ahead and see the back of your own head! Whooo boy! And that's why you won't be acatchin' any of us going anywhere else!

Cokie Roberts is reasonably well off and must have vacationed at one time or another in Hawaii as it is considered a very desirable vacation spot. That she would still refer to it as exotic and foreign says something about her attitude toward "brownies" and "darkies". Sigh!

The bias and corruption in the corporate media is the # 1 obstacle to positive change in this country. Until we fix that problem, we're going to be fighting an uphill battle. Thank the gods for the blogs... !
and the part about this that makes her statements "super stupid" is that his family is there. Hello, Earth to Cokie. When people go on vacation to visit family...they usually go to where their family is....in Obama's case, that would be Hawaii. yes, unlike John "I'm not allowed to have unsupervised contact with the press" McCain Obama was born in the U.S.
So Obama should have gone on vacation to Myrtle Beach? um he has no family there, he has no particular reason to visit a golf resort if he is not an avid golfer. Unlike McCain he actually married and is still married to the mother of his children and maybe, just maybe he gives a shit about his family and wants to spend some time with his family after being on the campaign trail for months. Take the kids to see Grandma...how is that a bad thing. I suppose Grandma should move to South Carolina to make Obama look more 'murkin.
No mention about how this is his first real vacation in about a year, whereas McCain has to be in before the street lights come on and is only allowed to camaign from 9am to 3pm so he can make the early bird special at Denny's.
who the hell wants to visit S.C. if they don't HAVE to? I don't know about you, but not too many black folks really want to go hang out in a formerly slave state unless they have family there. S.C was one of the main entry points for stolen Africans to enter the U.S. and go on the auction block. yeah....that sounds like a fun vacation for the kids.
"and right here is where they lynched Great-Great-Great Grandpa Mutumbo/Buddy"
I think the right is still trying to paint Obama as a "foreigner" with a funny name who doesn't look like the other presidents on our money. frankly, they are playing the "race" card without actually playing the race card.

Kansas does have lots of really lovely and humble people living there. There's not much to see, to be sure. And it is truly a terrain unbroken by nothing taller than a fence post. But kinder people you'd be hard pressed to find elsewhere. Yes, I had the occasion to travel to Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Indiana. These may not be tourist destinations, but there's a reason why we call it the "heartland".

Funny, there's plenty of Hawaiians who would prefer to see Hawaii as a foreign country, i.e. NOT part of Amurka. Perhaps Cokie can be their advocate...
Actually, Hawaiian Sovereignty is all about giving Native Hawaiians sovereign rights over themselves, just like every other native group in the nation (i.e., Cherokee, etc.). Hawaii would still be a state, just like every state on the Mainland with reservations is still part of America. That's what the Akaka Bill is for, anyway. Next to be made "exotic" California and the all the Northeast from Massachuesetts down to around Maryland, you know, cause no good hard working murkins live in "those" states. Seriously, seems like whenever anyone gets on TV and starts waving around flags the only acceptable places to be from are the deep south or the midwest. The funny part is, most of the US population lies on the coasts, not in the supposed "heartland" or in "the south". There's a reason why NJ, NY, and CA have such a huge number of electoral votes. It's time for us folks living on the coasts to take this country back, we've let the NASCAR/Faux news set have it to long and they've done nothing but play with the toys and not clean up the mess afterwards. Maybe its time for a little latte drinking, arugula eating, and dare I say it, yoga practicing to be brought back into the halls of power, I think I've had enough of the fake southern drawls, bbq for every meal, pseduo-patriotic pandering for a lifetime thank you.
You would think Hawaii paid its dues by now being one of the few US territories to say it was attacked by foreign armies in the last 100 years, but apparently, they aren't quite murkin enough. Perhaps its because too many of their people have too much melanin, or maybe its because they haven't allowed US industry to destroy all of their wilderness yet (give it time though, the one thing we can do is chop down a forrest or two to make room for a factory or a condo!).
This not particularly PC rant is basically my way of saying I think its time to start giving some smackdowns to the ignorance becoming so pervasive in our culture. I'm tired of making excuses for the fact that I actually read above a 5th grade level and I do laugh at the stupidity that is put forth as news and public policy today. Obama isn't perfect but at least he represents a lot more of what the world and this country really is, not a homogenous made-up-facade trying to remind people of an older time that probably never was, but a real, worldly, complex person who understands that people have a variety of opinions, looks, and needs and we can't run this country as a one-size-fits all oligarchy.
howdydostu
Thanks for saying out loud what I feel sometimes....But I'll always feel leary about painting people and places with such a wide brush. In California, when a disaster happens, it takes MONTHS not YEARS to rebuild and put our lives back together. In Massachusettes, gay men and women can marry legally...they have the LOWEST divorce rate in the country....so, .who really believes in the sanctity of marriage....Massachusettsians or Alabamans? Southerners have a great sense of patriotism and love our country a much as we do....many of them, I know, are as embarressed for what Bush has done to this country as you and I are! Try not to be so consescending. I share your frustration. Stuart & Robert Wyman-Cahall
ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith)
I hear what your saying, but the whole point of my rant was to use a very big brush and talk in generalities. Folks on the left spend so much time trying to parse things and be PC that we lose the war for the battles. IMO it's time to step up and call it the way it is, the civil war in many ways never stopped, and has morphed from a simple slave/soverignty issue into an almost bipolar country.
My point? Of course not all southerners are as bad as they are portrayed, just as not all of us on the coasts are a bunch of tie-dye wearing communist hippies. However, the GOP has learned long ago that people vote for themes and symbols, not the micro-managed parsing the Democratic party seems averse to stick with. We need to start using liberalism as a weapon and coallese, and, stop with the I'm-OK-you're-OK tendancy that leaves us wondering how a great candidate like Obama isn't killing McCain in the polls. The answer, as ugly as it is, is starring liberals right in the face and it has very little to do with his skin color, age, or even background. IMO, the answer is that the GOP isn't afraid to lump people together, play on their fears, and use group-think to make patriotism a way to enforce conformity, not true love of country. Dems have a choice, either play the game better, come up with a way to beat the GOP tactics, or lose again.

Given the facts (plural) that Cokie Roberts' father was a member of the U.S. House when Hawai'i was admitted to the Union, and was later the Majority Leader of the House, and that her mother was a decades-long (and highly respected) member of the House and later a U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, you'd think she'd know better than to call one of the United States "foreign."
And as to the term "exotic," I'm also from Louisiana like Ms. Roberts' family. Unlike her, I actually grew up there (not her fault -- when your parents are among the finest statesmen and stateswomen this country has ever produced, they tend to get drawn to Washington, D.C.). But, sweetheart, if "exotic" was a problem, Louisiana's tourist industry would die a quick and painful death.
And -- at the end of the day. Barack Obama is taking his wife and children to visit his grandmother in the U.S. state she lives in. By what stretch of the imagination is that grounds for criticism????
When I heard her comments about Hawai'i, I started trying to find out who managed the debate in the House on admitting that state to the union. There's a good chance it was her father. Still researching that one...

well that's no surprise, the repubs must be practicing their revisionist history skills for when W. leaves office.
To coin a phrase: "Is that American enough for ya?"
She's obviously trying to hide her FRENCH roots!
Cripes, she just assaulted the place where WORLD WAR TWO STARTED as a foreign villa.
Forget tourism - just say she hates World War Two vets.
(It's fun to practice thinking like Republicans)

She and pundits like her are responsible for the horrible things that have happened to the American people over these last 8 yeras.
We must be vigalent and expose these people for who they are at EVERY oppertunity!
Email "NPR"...Email "This Week at ABC"... . She should acknowledge publcly Sen. Akaka's statement and apologise to the good people of Hawaii!

God help all of us if they should succeed with this inflammatory line of attack!
Thanks for pointing out the facts.
My god, what a stupid bitch she is.
