Gen. Clark was correct when he spoke about relevant experience. He spoke the truth and never retracted one word. The McSame outrage was a perfect example of how the truth hurts. Joe Biden will pick up the Clark role if he is the vp nominee. Democrats need more Clarks and Bidens. The media needs more Jack Caffertys and Keith Olbermans. More power to the truth, which is in short supply these days.

Perhaps this additional taste of corporate nooz number skills might soothe the overly-fevered conventional beltway thought:
What CNN is calling expansion will mean reducing the number of staffers assigned to its bureau in Chicago by 25 percent
Up is down and inside is outside according to my poll of polls With so much talk about candidate track records it might be illuminating to take a peek at electoral media's greasy residue over several cycles...
I suggest this line of attack: "If you're not supporting the Constitution, shut the fuck up about patriotism."

I remember when i was 8 years old and a kid at school kept stealing my bike driving it home and leaving it in my driveway. I asked my Dad what to do. He said go to school tomorrow go up to him and punch him in the face. Then yell at him to stop taking your bike. I said but what if i get sent to the Principles office. My Dad answered. If that happens I will be right there supporting you. Next day, I hit him in the mouth and told him to stop taking my bike. He never touched it again and he never ever bothered me. John, i totally agree with your take on this. Dems as a whole are thought to be pussies, no balls, wimps, whatever. These GOP bullies are like all bullies all mouth, all shouting, you need to tell them to shut the fuck up. Just like Rachael Maddow did a few weeks ago to Pat (BIGOT) Buchanan. He shut the fuck up. I thought she would get slammed but no, she got her own show. Russia is fucking with the U.S. in Europe because he knows Bush is all bluster and no horse. He knows our troops are deployed where they can't threaten him. He knows they are set for desert warfare not the type they will see in Central Europe. Obama needs to shock the right wing and tell them to stop this shit and deal with the failure of the Republican party to take care of American families.

John, that is so untrue! Sometimes we say "they are attacking my patriotism and I don't like it". Other times, after calling their nominee an "American Hero", we say "we are not going to take attacks on our patriotism". Other times we quietly and stoically do not stoop to their level.
How about this attack? We will investigate the people who hijacked this country and throw them in prison! How about, The Repugs are selling out this country to their masters, big oil and the saudis.
The point being, go on offense, attack their patriotism. When is the last time a Demo did that? 1964 LBJ and he won in a landslide.

I listened to part of an FDR speech from the 1930s when that era's Robber Baron Party (that had just recently caused the Great Depression, no less) was attacking FDR and his programs with howling intensity.
FDR powerfully shouted his response: "I welcome their hate! I welcome their hate." And he went on to eviscerate them and instill hope for the future at the same time!
He neutralized the attacks with a deep resonating fierceness, showing without hesitation or doubt that NOTHING was more important than what he, with the support of the people, would do to help this country break out of the untenable situation the Republicans had put it in, and that he didn't fear the Republicans or their hate or their attacks.
THAT'S WHAT VOTERS WANT TO SEE FROM OBAMA! WHO ARE YOU, MAN?! THEY WANT TO SEE THE WARRIOR-KING-PHILOSOPHER.

I do believe we have to fight back, and fight back hard. When one looks at the political right, McCain has a slew of surrogates, not least of which are Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, and similar wingnuts who dominate the radio airwaves with anti-Obama crap. Obama does not have that advantage.
This helps McCain in so many ways, but primarily by allowing him to avoid personally swimming around in the muck. When he has ventured personally into the negative Obama has hit him back, and hit him hard. But there are limitations to what Obama can do if he is at all to preserve his powerful message of change.
Thus, it's incumbent upon us to have his back. We have to cover Barack's back. We have to make certain people are made aware of who McCain really is. I've been doing that here on the local level, having had published in my local newspaper a column No Regard For Truth or Integrity which I've also placed on my local Democratic Party blog. Here's the link
Read this, Digg it up, email it to your friends, give me some advice as to how to achieve broader circulation.
Honestly, we need to learn to use the corporate media to disseminate information. The netroots are wonderful, but we're largely preaching to the choir. Yes, McCain needs to be exposed for the fraud he is. Let's do it!

Obama very CLEARLY came out and called out McCain, in public, on this latest attack - it just wasn't covered - except on Olbermann. Where the rest of these Dems are on this issue is another thing. It would be nice for Pelosi and Reed to come out and say something. Funny thing about united fronts - they can actually WORK!
And I'm sorry, a good part of the problem is the laziness of the people in this country. They're too locked in their cozy self-absorbed little lives to question anything thats shoved at them through the TV screen. But they claim to be so "well-informed" because they spend 10 minutes a night watching the news. I talked to someone last week who said that Obama doesn't talk about the white half of his family often enough (huh?). And she was disturbed that Obama won't say the pledge of allegiance (sigh). She also thought that Obama was a Muslim before the Rev Wright thing. She's a freaking Democrat and she's been brainwashed by these right-wing idiots!!! (with the help of Hill and Bill - thanks guys !!!!).

Thanks for trying. Maybe with some luck we can get the Dem "leaders?" to join the campaign. The campaign that's fighting to win, that is. And, maybe they can convince Sen. Obama to come along too. Someone please explain to me the apathy that being shown by the campaign and DNC. I'm really baffled.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzJ0a7R0UCU&feat... You think this is a just "stop it" response? What the hell else does he need to do - lose his composure, suggest he and McCain engage in a fist fight? When does the Dem Party as a whole come out and defend him? When do Americans start looking past all this bullshit and not base their support of candidates based on soundbites and blatent misinformation? Don't lay this problem squarely on his shoulders because the root problem is bigger than any individual candidate can conquer on his own. His "colleagues" and "supporters" should be raising holy hell right now defending him - why the fuck aren't they??? Obama can become mean towards McCain on this issue, he can make it the subject of every speech he gives until the election, but if he's talking into a vacuum it won't do a damn thing for him. He IS making more of an effort than Kerry did. Unfortunately, the Dem Party is not. They are quite literally showing that, as a party, they ARE weak as all hell.

Thanks for the link, but I saw it and that's what caused me to draw the conclusion I drew. Of course I'm not suggesting a fist fight or loss of composure. But, there is a way to say it that comes across with intense resolve, passion and grit. As for colleagues and supporters, I don't know where they are. Many of us have been wondering that for some time. As the de facto leader of the party, maybe Sen. Obama should be asking them this question. If he is, then the real question becomes why aren't they responding?

I keep waiting for Obama to launch this huge counter-attack. Just a don't-know-what-hit-them punch to the gut that completely obliterates McCain. I keep thinking that the Obama campaign knows something I don't know, that they're going to take care of it, that they're waiting for the right time.
But the window is closing and McCain has almost finished framing Obama. Obama's responses have been moderate at best. I keep waiting, but I don't think its going to come. We are currently watching this election slip away.

Part of the image is deserved. You don't go in front of the VFW and respond like a scared kid that just got bullied on the playground. Obama's performance there did more harm than good. People follow fighters in politics, war and life. They don't follow people who respond with "nuh uh, am not". When Obama doesn't fight back he looks weak and the repubs know it. Unfortunately the image their painting of him is gaining traction. When is Sen. Obama going to join the campaign that's fighting to win? The campaign waged at sites like this (and Jed, dKos,TPMetc.).

I was posting on a local radio web site today.......and some people were still saying "Obama took the flag off his plane...he's unpatriotic".
Did the DNC send out a 2 sentence message saying McCain's Cross in the Sand is very similar to this story about Alexander Solzhenitsyn from his times in the Soviet Gulags????
That's all it takes.....send out a one sentence message.
like Lynchie I had the same bully issues. and I believe our Democratic leadership needs become bully proof. One day I came home from school (all while elementary with the exception of 5 black kids) and told my Dad that there was a girl who kept bothering me in class and had called me the n-word. Why would she do that and how do I make her stop? My dad became visibly angry (i could tell by the clenched jaw) and calmly said "I can guarantee you she will not stop. Tomorrow , when she does it again. You kick her in her ass until her panties are up around her neck." I said, "OK what if I get in trouble?" He said "I'll handle it if you do."
So, the next day Louise sat behind me (so she could kick my chair again and again and again) and I turned to her and said "My Daddy said if you bothered me again to kick you in your ass until your panties are up around your neck. And I am going to do that"
She looked like was going to crap herself. She never bothered me again.
That is what we need to have Obama do. Strike back NOW and strike back hard. Questioning my patriotism will not be tolerated. My allegiance is to the US Constitution and to the citizens of this country. And if you or any of your surrogates question it again, I will kick you in your ass until your Depends are up aroud your neck. If you question my patriotism again I will bring up the fact that you made propoganda films as a POW. If you question my patriotism again, I will bring up the fact that you cheated on your first wife. I think he would certainly be forgiven for going negative if there was justification for it.

you're right - the dems appear so freaking weak on national security, the military, patriotism and moral authority. And Obama asserts himself and fights back like a wuss. He needs to get outraged and get passionate!! – he needs to adopt a father figure – a father figure that has the qualities of fighting back hard!! He needs to tap into his inner terminator - he needs to jump into the ring and mix it up, get in their face and slam them to the mat!
Every chance McCain gets he basks himself in the military, the soldiers, Gen Patraeus, America’s victory, - and every chance he gets he states that Obama is flat out wrong on the military, the soldiers, american purpose.
This morning I heard Obama on tv criticizing Bush – everyone knows Bush sucks - he needs to focus on McCain and toss him out of the ring !
Hopefully he’ll pick Biden. He knows how to counterpunch!

See if I have this correct.
1. Low information voters frequently vote for "the lesser of two evils." 2. The other candidate slimes you, making you the worse of two evils. 3. You "take the high road" because you're better than that, and don't respond to slime. 4. You fail to counterattack as well, so other candidate keeps "saint" status while you remain the "worse of two evils". Defending yourself is fine, but you must take your opponent down a notch or they remain the "better of two evils". Sure you positive ads are great, but you never say anything bad about McCain, so he must be the better of two evils, right?
Not very effective is it? Time to take Saint McCain down a notch with some facts. I'm talking to you Barack.

We may decry the Republican party for their tactics and their slime, however, we have to look to ourselves. It is one thing to say that we will take the high road. It is another to allow our opponents to drive right over us.
It would be nice to have an election over the issues without bringing character and these other issues into it. However, we know that this will not be the case just as it has been the case in too many of the past elections. The analogy to a bully is an apt one that most Democrats can not or will not understand. The Republicans do understand that they are emulating the same politics of personal destruction as practiced by the Nazi's and Stalin. The Democrats seem unable to grasp that the entire gambit depends upon the intellectual's tendency to rely upon reasoned, logical factual arguments that tend to be devoid of anger or hatred. This was noted by Gobbel and his followers as an excellent vulnerability to exploit. The opposition never woke up to the danger until they had truly been vilified as different, unpatriotic and dangerous.
It may already be too late in this election. I do not think so. However, it will take a concentrated effort to redefine McCain and an excellent message machine to do so. It will also take a presidential candidate willing to understand that one may handle policy but must also attack those personnel characteristics that signify an inability to lead.

Good, let them think that way. Let them elect McCain because they stupidly think patriotism takes precedent over any other issue, like they did when they re-elected that evolution-proving chimpanzee we have in the White House. But when the body bags of soldiers come back to the States after McCain's neocon chest-beating military adventures into other countries, and gas goes up to $7.00 a gallon because of his continuation of Bush/Cheney energy policies, and the continuation of McCain's 100-year war in Iraq, and when the people still don't have universal health care, and jobs are still being sent overseas and workers still make lousy wages because we are all a bunch of "whiners" (gee, thanks, Mr. gramm), and more of our civil rights are taken away, and the top 1% still doesn't pay the taxes that are breaking the backs of the middle-class and lower-class workers, and your access to abortion and contraception is eliminated by the Religious Right American Taliban.... well, you get the point. But if all of this happens because people elect McCain and his idiot political brethren into office to continue the ruinous national policies of George W. Bush because they are stupid enough to believe he is more patriotic, just don't come around me expecting a shoulder to cry on. I'll be too busy laughing at your sorry asses, and planning how to rebuild the country I love that has been totally and absolutely destroyed. And if you don't think that will happen, then by all means vote for the clueless, feeble, adulterous, lying, bellicose, ill-tempered John McCain. Suckers!

I miss your point.
Unless you win the election, you get no power. There is no second prize here. If the Repukes push the right buttons and win, you shouldn't be mad at them. The fault will lie 100% with Senator Obama, he is who your anger should be directed towards.
Thanks to John and Americablog for sounding the alarm bells. If Obama has a brain, maybe he will read and react. I am not confident though.

My point is that people who think that patriotism will somehow save our nation will end up destroying it instead. World history is littered with the ashes of civilizations who believed patriotism and war-mongering would sustain them and their populations, only to be crushed because of their own arrogance and bellicosity. There are many people in this country who still believe the world is just like 1945 and America can do whatever the fuck it wants. Well, those days are gone forever, and people had better wake up, including the phenomenally clueless John McCain. Yeah, pick a fight with Russia, John, after Bush and his neocon troglodytes destroyed our military. Beleve me, Europe is not going to jump into the fray, no matter what that Bush-enabler Angela Merkel says. They have too much to risk, and the US has exposed itself as a paper tiger in world affairs because of our stupid military adventures in the middle east. And if the people of this country are fooled the same way they were after 9/11, and decide it's worth killing the country because of some stupidly belligerent person like the president of Georgia - who probably got assurances of US military support from McCain and his crooked foreign policy advisor - then this country deserves everything it gets. And if anyone does not think I am a patriot after saying this, I really don't give a flying fuck.

I agreee John with your post. We don't fight back hard. I really don't get it. I have said this before, but people believe McCain supports the troops. They have no idea what his voting record really is. Where are the ads showing how horrible is record really is? Where are the surrogates in uniform hitting McCain over his comments. What the hell is wrong here. Why isn't Obama and his campagin using more people who can hit hard. Obama can no longer take the high road I'm sorry to say. Otherwise he'll be nothing but a loser with class- so what.

None of this makes sense to me - like how Bush is still in the White House - like how we have lost so many of our people and our rights - like how patriotism is questioned so quickly when someone says they don't want this war. What has caused people to be so stupid when it comes to this administration? All the lies that got us into the war - those are all excused and forgotten? What is going on? Is there something in the air or water? Is it a lack of common sense?

Suckers!
