AMERICAblog: Hillary: "A win is a win." Yes it is, Hillary. And you lost.

  • Poopyman · 1 year ago
Now now, John. It would be mean to tell all of those PA voters that their votes don't count after all. Here they've been told for weeks that their late primary is going to mean something for once.

    Don't spoil the magic.
  • HereinDC · 1 year ago
It's like a baseball game Hillary...
    It's the 8th inning.
    Obama 12
    Hillary 5
Hillary scores 2 runs in the 8th inning and Obama scores 0
Yes, Hillary...you "won" the inning...but what's the score?

    Geeze.
  • slappymagoo · 1 year ago
If you were in the media, and you wanted election stories to be as juicy and dramatic as possible, BUT you didn't want to upset the old war vet who could still kick your ass, what would you do? Wouldn't you milk the Democratic primary process out of every last conceivable ounce of drama, to shield your dreamy hunk of an old man candidate from further scrutiny? Wouldn't you want that drama to last right up to the last moments of the Dem convention? Wouldn't you even make the candidates think there's more of a horse race going on, to amp up the tension, the rivalry, the all out WARRRRR?

And by "wouldn't you," John, I mean "Wouldn't you...if you didn't have an ounce of f*cking scruples?" So it requires some imagination as opposed to actual vision.

The press keeps accepting the new locations of the goalposts. Hillary has moved them following each loss and the press blindly follows.

Where has the press gone? Are the Communications professors teaching journalism now? Does everyone in the profession just want to be famous and not, you know, actually a journalist?
  • BorninUSA · 1 year ago
You don't get it yet! Hillary is not going to quit. She has said she will still be in it up to the convention. Why??? Because the MSM is encouraging her. Her staying in is to McCain's advantage. It is also to the advantage of the MSM as it makes for "good TV." The talking heads want her to ride it out so they can see a fight on the convention floor. That is the only reason. But Dean, Reid and Pelosi don't have the balls to do anything about it. They are all afraid of Willie and Hillary.

They keep talking about Hillary trying to "stay alive." Isn't she already dead as far as the campaign is concerned? Which is it? Can she still pull it out or not. We have been hearing for weeks and weeks there is no way she can get enough delegates but the MSM keep saying she only needs so many points and she still has a chance. What the hell is going on!

Hillary also said she is staying in until Michigan and Florida's votes count.
Is this woman crazy or am I?
  • BorninUSA · 1 year ago
MSNBC is now reporting that "the undecided voters could hold key to PA primary." Does that really make a difference? Is there any possible way Clinton can "win" in PA???? If she can, will it make any difference in the overall picture? I am under the impression, probably my mistake, that the super delegates are beholden to vote for the candidate of their constituents choice. Can these super delegates be bought off? Apparently, and the Clintons are going to do just that. What a sad election this is becoming.

when I voted this morning it was on a touch screen. no paper copy available. I asked the polling clerk why not. She looked me in the eye and said what's wrong don't you trust us. I answered. "Frankiy, I don't". Got a friend in Pittsburgh who was harrassed outside the polling station to vote for Hillary.
Trust me, they will do anyyyyyyyyyyyyyythingggggggggg to win.

Hillary views this like a marathon and even though the ribbons have been handed out she wants to cross the finish line. While I can't blame her It aint helping.

Great post John, I've been thinking the same thing for a month and a half now. I'll add to it, why the hell are they even doing a national poll between Hillary and Barack? It means absolutely nothing. And why are people talking about electoral votes, they don't even exist in the primaries. And winning big states in the primaries doesn't mean a damn thing either. In the fall, New York is going democratic......California too........so why the hell are people wasting my time talking about that crap. She's done, toast, the fat lady has sung, good luck getting reelected in New York next time too. I'm sure Obama will just love to through his vast support your way. :)

    From BRADBLOG...

Tuesday's Election Will be 'Unrecountable, Unverifiable, and Unauditable'...

On Tuesday night, you will be told who the winner of the Pennsylvania Primary is. You will accept it. You will have no choice. No matter who the winner really is. Or isn't.
This Tuesday's crucial contest will be primarily run on 100% faith-based, Direct Recording Electronic (DRE, usually touch-screen or push-button) e-voting machines across the state. There will be no way to determine after the election whether the computers have accurately recorded, or not, the intent of those voters who voted on them. As VerifiedVoting.org summarizes the crucial contest, it "will be essentially unrecountable, unverifiable, and unauditable."
  • Mikki --SE Pennsylvania · 1 year ago
Can the truth be that there are no "real reporters" left? Only the talking heads greedy for more time to rehash and rehash the same tired things. Some of them have admitted they would love the contest to go all the way to the convention. They are not really interested in "news" but only filling segments, using up the airtime at the direction of the hucksters who are the managment.
No more "real news," just product, massaged and manipulated so that it will be palatable to the plebs as well as the management. Thus "real news" becomes pap, bland and without dimension or color.
Why then John, after admitting a need for a "real reporter" do you then conjure the image of ABC's buffoon Stephi who has proved himself beyond any doubt to the be the total antithesis of a "real reporter." His bells and motley act at the so-called debate also proved another thing: he is totally within the thrall of the corrupt Clinton political machine.

I'm going to invest in coathanger futures with all the right wing judges Hillary will help McCain appoint by keeping this going to the convention
  • shanobama · 1 year ago
Thank you John, great observation. I hope if her 'win' is under ten points in Pa. some incredibly brash reporter will ask her just that.

They could ask Bill, too, but he would just say something like 'if we were Republicans she would have won already'.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
This morning someone forwarded me a very disturbing note from a keen-eyed Clinton backer: "As someone who is still pro-Hillary I was not happy to read that as she left today's rally in PA the [public address system speakers] played Journey's 'Don't Stop Believin'." Two salient facts about this song: It's one of the worst, most cloying pop songs ever recorded, and it is also, infamously, the soundtrack to the closing moments of the last Sopranos episode.

I have this nightmare that if this woman does not get the nomination, she will run as an independent.
  • SkippyFlipjack · 1 year ago
I think mathematicians would take issue with your comment that Hillary can't mathematically win. Her statistical chances are effectively 0, but mathematically she can win -- just go to one of those those delegate tally apps and move the slider for each upcoming race 100% of the way to the Hillary side. In that scenario, she needs just 208 superdelegates and I think she has that already.

By the way, why is the comments volume so low? Used to be that most threads had comments in the hundreds, now they seem to max out under 100. Do people not like registering for Disqus? Do they not like the new comment style? Or is this just an off day?
  • ZennButtKicker (tlhwraith) · 1 year ago
    SkippyJack:

I think most of the decrease in comment volume is because on the old system people would comment on lots of mundane things like recipes and such, on every thread. Disqus kind of forces people to take ownership of their comments, which cuts down on a lot of the background noise.

Also, the registration feature probably cuts down on a lot of the old "drive by spam" a lot of threads used to get.

At least, that's what I think.

Now for my issues on the comments, CAN WE PLEASE HAVE THE THREADING BACK!

I think this flat format comments suck and is one of the reasons I was glad to see the old comment system go. It would be really cool if it was an option you could turn on or off individually.
  • SkippyFlipjack · 1 year ago
LOL.. so with this no-thread model, there's no difference in clicking "Reply" or "Post new comment". I think it must be an option that we're not seeing...

let's pretend the press is embargoing the news of Obama's overall victory in the same way it embargoes poll results from the east coast while california is still voting. i know it's a fantasy, but it lets you be more sanguine about the great exercise in democracy currently underway in the keystone state.

Julie Nixon Eisenhower is an Obama-can.

Just before the crush of states that voted on Feb. 5, Ms. Eisenhower, one of two daughters of President Richard M. Nixon and his wife, Pat, made a $1,000 contribution to Mr. Obama, according to campaign finance records. Two weeks later, she gave another $1,000. And early last month, she donated another $300, reaching the contribution limit for individuals for the primary.

I wonder exactly when did the GOP contact the Clinton's to have them destroy the Democratic party from within. She is doing an outstanding job and is either well compensated or her secrets held onto tightly by the GOP will not be exposed.

    Otherwise she is a
    Sad. Sorry, Sack of SH*T

This race has been over, now Hillary is like a drunk driver on the NASCAR racetrack while the winner is supposed to be taking his victory lap.

Maybe you are right. I hope you are right.

I have work that needs to be done, but I cannot concentrate on any of it. With everything riding on this vote, we cannot trust its validity. Nor can we trust the super-delegate's votes later on. Believing that "it's ovah" gives no comfort.
  • Ken Clark · 1 year ago
If she doesn't win this time she'll just stamp her foot and run as a republican next time. It's easier to win on that side.

Right now the media (CNN is the worst) is endlessly perpetuating the dishonest meme that Hillary will 'win' Pennsylvania despite being outspent 3:1 by Obama. But all you have to do is follow the money to see how nothing could be further from the truth. Remember when Billary 'loaned' her own campaign a huge amount of money? Funny how we never heard the source of that cash. If you add up all her back door 5013c funding and questionable PAC group soft money, she has burned through a huge amount of dirty money. Bill and Hillary are trying their slick tactics once again, but the people of Pennsylvania aren't falling for their lies.

Zenn is right regards lower #s of comments.

Since Disqus began and as John and his contributors have amped the number and weight of their posts, commenters have followed with hard-hitting and on topic responses, so much so that I am sometimes intimidated, that what I might add isn't good enough for the dynamic blog that Americablog has become and in so short a time.
  • Milli · 1 year ago
George Stephanopoulos said he couldn't think of a harder question to ask Hillary than as to why people don't trust her. Well, here's one, George: "Under what possible scenario could you catch up to Obama in either delegates or votes?"

Absolutely John. I wish Olbermann would have asked her that last night. Although he probably would have been tar and feathered.....
  • kipper · 1 year ago
SO, when will Senator Obama have enough delegates to win, WITHOUT someone dropping out? Isn't that the flip side to this? She will not win outright, before the convention... BUT Neither will he, am I wrong? So, couldn't -"for the good of the party"- HE drop out. ( typed with tongue firmly in cheek, but..)
If you hate Hillary Clinton, and I had no idea so many on the left did. (Im a New Yorker, and she still has great approval numbers as our senator) , so if you hate her, she is a monster for staying in. If you support her ( as LOTS of folks in Pennsylvania will today) you want her to go to the convention and win with super-delegates......

Well, that's what Clinton is hoping to do: Reach the convention and get the super delegates to vote for her. But Obama has a majority of states, a majority of pledged delegates and the popular vote. Those numbers aren't likely to change between now and the convention. So for Clinton to win the supers at the Convention, she has to convince them to split the Democratic party by voting against the popular vote and the pledged delegates.

I don't see the supers sending all of us a big f**k you, do you?
  • GrahamCrackerDC · 1 year ago
    "She can't mathematically overtake Obama".

Yes, she can. She has to have a comfortable win in PA, do reasonably well in the few remaining primaries, get FL and MI seated as they are (no changes), and then convince between 50 and 100 of Obama's SDs to switch sides.

    Difficult. Not impossible.
  • Rab · 1 year ago
GrahamCracker, you just don't get the math do you?
  • LeslieB · 1 year ago
I hope to be wrong, but I don't think she'll leave the race after Pennsylvania. If she gets one vote, she'll stay in, as Rachel Maddow observed.

The super delegates are going to have to decide and soon. Especially if we hope to win against McCain! Because the longer this plays out the better McCain's chances.
  • kipper · 1 year ago
I dont.. and I wish it would end, TODAY... Senator Clinton is not the enemy, Senator Obama is not the enemy. BUT , she is playing by the rules here. It is not impossible...
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
If this reaches the floor of the convention the only good outcome is for McCain, Hillary and her supporters know this, so she is basically saying that if she is not the nominee then she will hand McCain the election.
Everyday this goes on is another day that McCain goes unchallenged.
  • Mike_H · 1 year ago
*sigh* Except, except, except, you keep on forgetting that NEITHER Obama NOR Cinton can win this based on regular delegates (non-superdelegates).

BOTH of them can ONLY win if enough superdelegates back them. And right now, neither candidate has enough superdelegates in their corner to lock this up.

I know it's unlikely, but it's still reality -- if enough of the remaining undeclared superdelegates vote for Clinton, she wins the nomination, fair and square, according to the rules both she and Obama agreed to when they first started this thing.

Yes, it's unlikely. Yes, it probably would cause upheaval in the party. Yes, many Obama supporters would likely not vote for Clinton. But that doesn't negate the fact that it could still happen.

Unless and until sufficient superdelegates ACTUALLY DECLARE for Obama, Clinton HAS NOT YET OFFICIALLY LOST.

And that's the crux of the problem, why it's still dragging on. The reluctance of the superdelegates to get off the fence is continuing to give Clinton sufficient hope to keep on this path.

The fat lady hasn't sung yet, John.
  • mirth · 1 year ago
    Busboy,

If you haven't noticed the change for the better at AB, from very good to dynamic, then I suggest you compare it to the continuing softball, cut & paste posts at C&L and a number of other large and popular political blogs.

Additionally, if the SDs don't all vote on the first ballot at the convention, then it goes to a second ballot, third ballot, etc.

The "pledged" delegates are only pledged on the first ballot. After that, they are released to vote for whoever.
  • GrahamCrackerDC · 1 year ago
"If this reaches the floor of the convention the only good outcome is for McCain, Hillary and her supporters know this"

I respectfully disagree. Hillary Clinton firmly believes that she has a better chance of beating McCain than Obama.

Reading the on-line news is just annoying at this point. Listing PA as a "must win" state for Hillary is just sheer stupidity. Assuming she wins PA by a small margin doesn't change her bleak outlook. The millions are left to vote argument just doesn't hold up, she's toast and we all know it.
  • gonzalez · 1 year ago
It is not the media's fault if they keep pushing her to stay in the race. It is our fault by not demanding the real story from the media. It is to the media's advantage to have the race continue. It keeps the money coming in and they help their friend McSame. get it through your heads and start doing something about it like, ah, lets say, start screaming at the idiots in the media every time they open their mouth and manufacture contraversies.
