AMERICAblog: Hillary's congressional backers aren't as shy as Obama's

  • EqualRightsNow · 1 year ago
John, you stated it perfectly: "The Democrats simply refuse to take Hillary at her word." She has perfected the art of deception and perjury just like her disgusting hubby Slick Willie. The DNC needs to once and for all tell these white trailer trash scum they are no longer welcome in the Democratic Party. Their corruption and immorality are not compatible with the values of our Party. They might feel more at home with the GOP.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
Wasserman-Shultz has gone from "Rising Star" to "Grade A Pain In The Ass" in record time.

Not all of Hill's supporters run around trying to threaten the nominee, however.

John, I think Obama is playing this exactly right, and I think we might want to follow his lead. He's not playing into all the Hillary hype. He's pivoting away from the primaries to the general election. The party leaders, including many top Clinton backers, are lining up behind him. The superdelegates are coming out for him. Clinton's support is draining away hourly. And all it's going to take for the last die-hards to unify behind Obama is that inevitable blowup on the right, whether it's McCain or Coulter or Limbaugh or whoever, that one unforgivable, over-the-line attack we all know is coming sooner or later. Just like the NYT expose gave the hard-righters their excuse to rally behind the previously-despised McCain.

So Obama's playing this exactly right. Show respect to Clinton and her supporters, then pivot away to the general. Recognize that she is irrelevant now and growing less relevant by the day. Clinton can concede or not concede, but she's a spent force. And all Obama really has to do is wait her out on the VP slot until July, when he's fully engaged in the general and she has no supporters, no staff, no money.

No need to pull the rug from under her, and possibly re-energize her supporters. Just sit back, relax, and take the fight to McCain - Clinton can either get on the train or be left standing by the track.
  • LeslieB · 1 year ago
    Yeah. Excellent points.
  • Coming Undone · 1 year ago
The only problem is that Hillary is pivoting too, she is now in General Election mode
  • LeslieB · 1 year ago
Well everyone else is shifting their focus to help our nominee, Obama, win against McCain.
  • RobotKing · 1 year ago
Who cares? She's not the nominee. She's tens of millions of dollars in debt, and Obama is not going to help her refinance while she's still holding out. Her supporters are deserting her in droves. The Democratic Party is behind Obama.

I know the press is going nuts over the Clinton melodrama but, seriously, after this week - and especially once Obama-McCain takes over the attention - she's an irritant, at worse.
  • lov446 · 1 year ago
RobotKing: Clinton supporters can not be won over, and everyone will just have to accept this. If Barack took his worst enemy, H.Clinton, on the ticket, then he will lose his supporters, as most will not vote for him with her on the ticket. Her people are vicisous people, like her, they are the worst, and they are lost. No sense kissing her a__, it won't work!! Clinton is still hoping, perhaps even planning, for something to happen to Barack. Who knows what she will do, but you can bet, she isn't don trying to destroy Barack yet. Why does everyone have to pander to her and Bill?? Who are they anyway, did they own the election?? Get rid of them both!!
  • RobotKing · 1 year ago
They already are being won over, in a lot of cases by Clinton's refusal to recognize the reality that Obama is the nominee. See Hilary Rosen's essay on HuffPo. See the comments and diaries at MyDD, Daily Kos and many other lefty blogs. Her support is draining away like sand through an hourglass.

Attacking Clinton or being seen as trying to shove her off the stage is the WORST thing Obama can do at this point. (Which, no doubt, is why many Republicans are posting to lefty blogs urging him to do exactly that). Left to their own devices, most Clinton supporters will - once they have some time, and particularly once the right launches some unforgivable attack on him - come around. But NOT if Obama disses them or their candidate. And there's simply NO NEED for him to do that. He's the nominee. It's over. Clinton can either get on board or get left behind, but whatever she does, it's not going to matter to Obama. Only to her.
  • moreleesafer · 1 year ago
I agree. B.O. is a class act. He will not dis her publicly like the McBush wants.

I bet Rush Limbaugh is in rare form to day. anyone heard what he's up to this morning.
  • RobotKing · 1 year ago
Agreed, however, that taking Clinton as his VP would be a terrible mistake for Obama. Thanks to Clinton, McAuliffe, and this ridiculous Congressional letter thing, he'd only look weak. Plus, adding a consummate insider like Clinton to the ticket completely invalidates the whole 'change' thing.

He can't, and won't, take her as VP. And all he has to do is resist the efforts to stampede him into it. By July, Clinton will be a footnote, and he can pick whoever he wants.
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
As much as I would like to see the woman go public with a concession speech, I think you are right. The announcement that Obama has selected a 3 person committee to vet possible VP candidates pretty much says he is not open to being pushed into accepting her as a VP. The longer she waits (and she may never) to concede in view of the fact she lost only makes her look more unfavorable.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
Correct. Also keep in mind that even if he does pretend to entertain the possibility of her being in a VP slot, they get to go through the Clinton's records with a fine-tooth comb--and then deny then for obvious reasons--too many skeletons in the closet.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
RobotKing: Let's put you on the Obama ticket:) These are excellent points to take note of. Also, the more she and supporters make the case of putting her in the VP slot, the easier it is to allow the pundits to make the call for him.

"He can't afford to pick up Hillary under duress, otherwise he would look weak."
  • RobotKing · 1 year ago
Heh! :) Exactly, this is a completely boneheaded play if Clinton's goal is to actually get - or just be offered - a VP slot. All these shenanigans do is guarantee Obama can't offer her the job.

And waiting her out is simplicity itself - "As you know, picking a VP is one of the most important decisions a nominee can make. My advisers and I will be very carefully considering all the possibilities, including Sen. Clinton, between now and the convention. I'm certainly not going to act precipitously on such a momentous decision for myself, our party, and our nation, and I'm sure no one would ask me to do so."

Then just wait until July, when he has all the momentum and Clinton has none, and announce his choice (not her).
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
Keep up the great work RK! These are great times. There's a feeling of hope in the air for the first time in a long time. I was speaking with a friend of mine today, and she told me she has tried, to no avail, to not get emotional when she hears Obama speak. She said she's heard it all before.

So I asked her, "Then why do you get emotional?" She just smiled.

It's that smile of hers that makes me believe that Obama is an "event"--whose time has come. It's a feeling that's hard to quantify in words. It's knowing (without being able to explain it) why members on both sides of the congressional floor were excited by his victory lap.

But more importantly, this angst for change is being felt the world over.

Again, keep up the great work.

"A long awaited 'changing of the guard' ".
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
Exactly! And by not allowing the Clinton's to ram themselves onto the ticket with their hysterical blackmail by appointing a vetting team, the Clintons' will suddenly decide to withdrawl from any VP considerations for the good of the country, women and small puppies everywhere. It won't have anything to do with all those shady foreign donors they are trying to keep hidden from the public. LOL Buh Bye Hillary.
  • RobotKing · 1 year ago
In fact, it gives Obama an excellent chance to show strength by saying, 'I won't be bullied by anyone, even my own party.' (Now, he may want to pass up that chance, or just make it by implication rather than overtly, to not piss off the people who are coming over to his side, but it's an opportunity).
  • LeslieB · 1 year ago
Through her surrogates, she's going to try and muscle her way onto the ticket...a ticket she won't even acknowledge he won?! I'm speechless and disgusted. Obama is the nominee and has the right to choose whomever he wishes to be on his ticket. At this point, I doubt that includes Hillary.
  • lov446 · 1 year ago
The Clintons are sore losers!! They have shown their true colors all along in this campaign and now especially; they are acting like sore losers!! Nothing gracious about them, no decency even!! A ticket with her on it is just plain stupid. Who wants their worst enemy to join them in anything, let alone the presidency. CHRIS MATHEWS said it best today on tv, when said if a candidate is not strong enough to with the election on his own whithout having to rely on the V.P. to do it, is not strong enough to run or win. Also, he sais that the V.P. has to be a person that will OBEY the president, to take orders and direction. This is not the Clintons, they are already trying to tell Barack what to do now; they would be worse if they were the V.P. They would be running things, not Barack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • aquarius2 · 1 year ago
"And she won't, unless and until you call the cops, have them drag her kicking and screaming out the door, pull down the curtains, change the locks, change your phone number, and move."

John, in addition to all the above you might want to have a rope of garlic, a cross and a silver stake.

Trying to force Obama's hand is a mistake. This 'entitlement' posturing is what got Hillary into trouble in the first place. She may have blown any chance of being picked a running mate by her speech last night.

Obama must have a free hand to pick his running mate. Hillary supporters must realize that it is time to quit. A defeat is a defeat - not a victory and she has lost this race.
  • LeslieB · 1 year ago
I agree with RobotKing...let's shift our focus toward Obama's upcoming fight against McCain. We need to win the White House and that's where we should put our energies now.
  • tbhull · 1 year ago
Obama has been respectful and overly polite to Clinton. However, Obama now clearly wears the daddy pants (having put the pants suit on Hillary).

As stated in threads below, Obama now needs to take a positive step to lead by graciously letting Hillary know that she will not be VP, but that she could be on the cabinet or be a Supreme Court nominee if she so desires. After giving her camp a week or so to move one way or another it needs to be clear to Clinton that Obama will make his VP preference (or at least his VP non-reference known publicly) such that the dems at the convention will not try to force Clinton down his throat as a VP, for it would destroy their candidate. Of course this has risk, but no risk no reward. Leadership requires that he set the terms of the debate, not the loser.

Change cannot involve Clinton at the VP slot. In my opinion this type of leadership will allow Obama to pick up 2 independent/undecided voters for each Harriet Christian vote he will lose without Clinton on the ticket.
  • liberaldemdave · 1 year ago
i would love obama to make a public statement that would be equivalent to $hillary's heavy handed tactics...something along the lines of, "Mrs. Clinton (a nice dig by not addressing her as "Sen." Clinton), for every day that you don't concede and endorse me, since i am now the nominee, the more diminished your possible position in my administration will be...you cannot DEMAND a position in my administration, but you can enhance your possibilities by behaving with a new-found dignity that you've failed to exhibit up to this point.

you've already eliminated yourself from being considered for the VP slot based on you and your supporter's behavior on tuesday. right now, you're at top-level cabinet spot or supreme court nominee. within a week's time, you'll be on a long list of other contenders for under secretary to the undersecretary's administrative assistant. the choice is yours to make. please consider carefully, since your senate seat is far from safe."

ok, obama would never be this classless, but a fella can have his fantasies, can't he?

    Hillary Holds Her Voters Hostage
    by Cenk Uygur [Subscribe]
Wed Jun 04, 2008 at 11:17:45 AM PDT
I was going to write about what a horrible speech John McCain gave tonight. About how he has no chance of winning (barring a world changing event) and this is as good as it gets for him. I was going to explain how awkward and painful a speech that was, especially compared to the dynamic and energetic Clinton and Obama speeches.

This was what was going through my mind as I was waiting for Hillary to get to the point in her speech where she makes the turn and says, "It's been a great race, I love you all for supporting me through these trying times, but now we have to unite behind the Democratic candidate for president, Barack Obama!"

Except that moment never came. I couldn't believe it. She didn't concede. Is she mental? Her chances of winning aren't theoretically low now, they're nonexistent. The race is over. She lost. What is there not to concede? What kind of maniacal move is this?

    Cenk Uygur's diary :: ::
Yes, I love hard-hitting, driven competitors that never say die. But there are bounds of reason. One of them is that we fight within the confines of the contest. You have to stop hitting your opponent after the match is over. This isn't even hitting after the end of a round. The other boxer has won and gone home, and you're trying to follow him there while still swinging at his head. That's not tenacious, that's mental.

I'm picturing Hillary shooting baskets after everyone in the stadium has gone home and keeping score with herself and then jumping up and down in the dark saying she had finally won. No, you see, you have to score those baskets while the game is still being played.

I understand that she wants to negotiate with Obama, presumably for a VP spot. But what was stopping her from doing that earlier? This handwriting has been on the wall for quite some time now. For her to drag this out so she can negotiate a better ransom now does tremendous damage to her credibility. Who believed her tonight when she said she was still staying in the race because of her voters and not for herself? Please!

But the problem is a lot of Hillary's supporters are apparently as deranged as she is. The reality is that there is a sliding scale of voters in any camp. Some of her voters who are on one end of the scale will happily go over to Obama starting tonight. Some on the other end of the scale will never vote for Obama no matter what. The problem is that every day that Clinton drags this out, we lose more people on that sliding scale.

You lose the ability to convince people further down the scale that she was not robbed, that Obama is fine and that they should be excited enough to turn out to vote for him in November.

In essence, Hillary is holding her voters hostage in an effort to negotiate better terms with Obama. And she's losing the Democratic Party more voters every day she does so.

She had an opportunity to speak to a lot of her supporters on Tuesday night and bring them into the Obama camp. Instead, she had that steely look of deranged determination and plowed on. She said next to nothing about unity, other than one throw away line that seemed completely disingenuous. She continued to attack Obama when her followers were looking for clues as to whether they should support him or not.

Now, she wants to be his VP? I wouldn't trust her under any circumstances. People keep saying that if he picked her, he'd have to watch his back. I assume they are mostly kidding when they say this (I've said it in jest myself). But there is a real component to this. I wouldn't trust her to make decisions that were best for the team, or the campaign, or the administration if they won. Hillary Clinton has shown, once again tonight, without a shadow of a doubt that the one thing she cares about most is -- Hillary Clinton.

That's not someone you want on your team.

I think she has about three days to correct course. Otherwise, everyone is going to realize that still staying in the race after it's over is a real weird and classless thing to do. Not only will she do damage to Obama's campaign, but she will start to do very serious damage to her own reputation and career. And that's the last thing she wants.

While some people believe that Hillary just needs time to come to terms with the fact that she lost, she is planning a hostile takeover.

Hillary disrespected the entire Democratic party by not conceding and endorsing Obama and Terry McC -introducing her as the next President of the United States was even more disrespectful.
And the cops were called back in March but they were slow to respond, so now she has taken hostages and it's time to call in the SWAT team, and she is armed(her 18 million so called supporters) and she is dangerous.
    DO NOT CONFRONT HER ALONE
  • RobotKing · 1 year ago
Don't buy into the hype. First, Clinton will concede this week. I'd also have preferred that she concede Tuesday, but she didn't, and in the long run that's going to hurt her a lot more than it hurts Obama. Second, how is she going to stage this hostile takeover with no money, no supporters, no staff, the entire Democratic leadership lined up against her, and the press focusing on a red-hot Obama vs. McCain electoral fight?

The sky is not falling and Clinton is not the Wicked Witch of Oz or a comic-book supervillain. She's not the nominee. She's irrelevant. Ignore her.

How dare they pressurize Obama to pick Pinnochio as his VP, especially after all the crap she has put him through. I have never seen such aggressiveness where picking a VP was concerned. Clinton is a bloody embarrassment to all woman and all Democrats. Obama does not need a vicious, greedy, liar, as a VP, her negatives are too high, and her baggage too large, and that will will bring him down too.

I hope her naive supporters are happy that she is now using them to further her insatiable ambitions, as bargaining chips. If only they had the brains to see that their dear leader Hillary loves only herself, and not the party.

    John,

Holy water and garlic probably will not be enough. A sharpened wooden stake and some silver bullets may also be required. Hillary and her supporters increasingly seem to be living in some parallel universe where reality is only what they want it to be. In my view, Hillary as VP on Obama's ticket is courting disaster. Pelosi, et al need to grow some balls and drag Hillary away.

I can match you link for link and your's will continue to describe aged women as ugly or witch-like and mine would continue to give the original definition of crone as being in the 3rd cycle of female life: Maiden, Mother, Crone.

I'm not competing with you or trying to prove you wrong. I merely gave you the original definition of crone before the wisdom of aging females was devalued and their appearance demonized.
Of course, surprise surprise, men largely retained and even grew their "wise" status as they aged; females became bitches & witches who want to gobble up little children in spite of their earlier roles as birthers and nurturers.

But chose the meaning that best suits your mindset.

No, I do not and neither should anyone else give legitimacy to cultural corruptions of word meanings. This is especially true when the corrupted definition completely changes its original meaning, in this case from one of status and respect to one of derision and something to be feared.

Understanding the true meaning of crone and rejecting its corruption is simply a matter of enlightenment...

which is difficult for some people.

A google of "maiden, mother, crone" will give you a wealth of info.

Thanks for the link to Wasserman's e-mail. She needs to know that she is just as stupid and rabid as Hillary. I met Hillary in 96 and told her how I wished she were running instead of Bill. Talk about regret my words. As a 61 year old feminist who has waited all her life for a viable female candidate, I hate saying it, but Hillary and her actions in this campaign shame all feminists. I have lost all the respect I have ever had for her. Those who want a female for the sake of gender are just clueless. Hillary is a disgrace in that she cares about nothing but her ego. If her supporters become spoilers, then the blood of those killed in Iraq and/or Iran under a McCain administration are on their hands, not mine.

Bad thing: even if we can get her faded out here, there is always Chelsea waiting in the wings. I can see this narcissistic running her next!

Hat tip to John for including a link to the Congresswoman's e-mail...This is the e-mail I just sent (hopefully, we'll ALL flood her inbox):

    Dear Congressperson Wasserman Schultz,

The time for your blind support of Senator Clinton needs to come to an end. She lost. She fought a hard, and many believe dirty, campaign. Do the rest of us loyal Democrats a favor and respectfully decline to continue to carry Senator Clinton's water. There was a time when I had tremendous admiration for you and your ascent on the national political scene. Every time you appear on Hardball and continue to launch your thinly-veiled attacks on our presumptive nominee, you not only demean your credibility but you also do Senator Clinton a disservice.

Senator Clinton's negatives are already in the toilet, she doesn't need your assistance (or Harold Ickes, Terry McAuliffe or Mark Penn's, for that matter) to sink any lower in the polls.

If you have any loyalty to the Democratic Party and the concept of feminism and gender equality, you'll get behind Senator Obama and start encouraging Hillary's supporters (especially those who are insistent upon voting with their uteruses) to do the same. If not, you and those vocal Hillary supporters like you, will be held accountable for a John McCain victory, the death knell of the Supreme Court for a generation to come, and the ultimate overturning of Roe v. Wade.

In all honesty, are those prospects really worth it to you and the other Clinton supporters?

Excellent letter - but I doubt Wasserman will be moved by it. I can't have any respect for Ms. Debbie, or any Democrat who lacks a spine and puts the best interest of our country behind their political aspirations. Terry Mc. came out just before Hillary's speech last night and introduced her as "...the next President of the United States."

Sick, sick, sick. We are being ridden like a bull by a megalomaniac - someone above talked about giving her a seat on the Supreme Court, the cabinet, etc. I say hell no. Let her work on health care as a Senator. She is so dillusional it borders on pyschotic.

I've had enough of her bullshit.

Sooooo...Hillary supporters have been claiming that sexism and black-on-white racism are two of the reasons Hillary lost. To combat this, as a group - a predominately white, female group - they're demanding the black man give the white woman what she wants or there's gonna be trouble, they know how to make trouble..

I can't think of Thing One wrong with that plan, nor can I think of any social commentary to be affixed to its symbolism. No parallels to racial or social extortion, no using their gender as a bartering chip. It's just so refreshingly honest. Really.

I have read numerous posts (thousands) where Obama supporters have been trashed by Mrs. Clinton's supporters - They are completely delusional - I would not be surprised that if she is not picked for VP she does not run as an Independent and screw the whole election up for the Democrats - she is a turncoat like Libermann. She is hell bent on destroying the Democratic party and Obama's chances. Both her and Bill have shown the American public just how loathesome they are - desperate pathetic losers. Did anyone notice she turned her white back on every gay person in America trying to appease the "working class" by not mentioning us at all in all her speeches - now she wants us all to be concerned about sexism - clueless.

As for elected officials, Debbie Wasserman Schultz was easily the craziest, most irrational Hillary supporter of all.

The notion that Hillary deserves to be on the ticket and should be put on even if Obama doesn't want her is insane. Hillary has yet to even drop out and her rabid supporters are trying to now FORCE their will upon Obama.

These people have no comprehension of what it is like to be gracious. We would all like a chance to breath for a second after this grueling battle and take a moment to enjoy the moment. Instead, we get this nonsense shoved down our throats. All it does is make us not want her that much more. The heck with that!

I'd proudly put my name on the top of the Anyone But Hillary petition. As the WINNER, Barack Obama has the right to choose whoever he wants.

Ms. Wasserman-Schultz is what my father would have called uglier than sin is attractive. She appears to ahve neither a beautiful mind or a lovely personality.
The best suggestion I can make to her is to try and break into radio. She's pretty well made a bust at her try in politics. Its really not very bright supporting candidates of the other party over your own. But then this is florida the trailer trash state. But if need be,call the cops, change the locks, and get the garlic be it for Hil or little debbie. No more crap from these bitches!!
