Pansy is a perjorative word, but I don't think it's limited to being a slur on homosexuals. Rather, it's a weakling, an effieminate who won't fight, a scaredy cat who runs away from danger, etc. The word choice here is meant to underline Obama's so-called elitism because we all know what a down-to-earth, shot-and-a-beer kind of lady Sen. Clinton is, right? (Keerist, drinking a shot of Crown Royal is about as blue collar as sipping a single malt Scotch. That was the whole premise of Dana Carvey's short-lived SNL character "Lyle, the Effeminate Heterosexual." (Personally, I found that character hilarious, but the hilarity was in his self-denial, not in his effeminancy. But Hillary? Not so Hillarious)

As an openly gay man, I haven't got much of an issue with that particular word but it's fun to watch my all-hetero-all-the-time suburban wilderness neighbors blink when I plant pansies in the front flower beds in the spring. I'm easily amused.
As for that poor Clinton woman, she needs to consider more carefully the company she keeps. There's something strangely weird about the governor's comment that there's "nothing I love more than a strong powerful woman." Victorian pulp fiction is loaded with that comment. Eeeuw!

You guys are just too much, and need to get over it. Talk about HYPERSENSITIVITY! I think the reason hillary has drawn widespread blog-fire is pretty simple, but not really an issue of obama preference. Mathmatically she has lost the election. The only way she "wins" the election is through the superdelegates turning around the results. If the superdelegates are perceived as handing the election to anyone, the credibility of the whole process is smeared, and it will turn into a loud drawn out battle that will ultimately leave whoever enters the presidential election as a wounded duck. The sooner we have a canidate the better, and hillary appears all too eager to do and say whatever it takes to get an edge.

Yeah...um...I'm gay--and not in the least offended by the use of the word pansy--especially in a context in which it is clear that the Governor was NOT suggesting that Rocky Balboa is gay. Saying "You make Rocky Balboa look like a pansy" is clearly different than saying, "All of the guys from Queer Eye are f-ing pansies!" The intent is clear by the context. And in this case, gay-bashing was obviously not the intent.

Context is everything. Just as with Rev. Wright's comments--context is EXTREMELY important. It'd be really nice if we could keep that in mind while looking at BOTH sides of this campaign.

Intent does'nt matter but TACT always does. Pansy is a word that does not belong in public discourse at all.

I would like to encourage people to do their homework before they post. Only those in the gay community can make the conclusion if the word pansy is offensive. As a gay man myself, I must tell you, GET OVER IT! People are way too sensitive these days. If it's not pansy, then it is bitter, if not some other word. What about the issues that matter? Oil prices, mortgage meltdowns, this thing called the war in Iraq.

For those of you who claim Hillary is anti-gay, I happen to be a member of the Miami-Dade LGBT and can say we have maintained closed ties with the Clintons since their White House Years. I was diagnosed HIV+ and it was through programs instituted by Clinton that I was able to pay for my medications before I had health insurance so please post responsibly.

I grew up in a time when pansy was often thrown at those who didn't meet the macho, over-testosterone laden jocks. Although I was involved in sports I also read a lot and studied. I had "pansy" thrown at me. If you've not been on the receiving end of such language then you really don't understand how offensive it is. If you don't understand the damage name calling does to kids then you really need to find out. For a governor of a state to use that term is inappropriate and offensive. Even after all these years I detest that term when it is used to describe anything other than a flower. I teach and I see kids lives damaged because of name calling. We have kids who take their own lives because of being called names like "pansy". So, please consider the bigger picture before you dismiss the concern. Thanks.

Years ago, I lost a partner to a gay basher yelling "Pansy." As recently as last year, another friend was bashed when he stepped off a city bus as the self-loathing straights yelled similar epithets. The governor and Hillary should both apologize and come into this century with their views and language. Would have been less acceptable to use "nigger," "hymie," "cunt," or any other hateful term? I think so and that makes me sad.

If you think you have a valid point I welcome you to attend our Miami-Dade County DEC meeting on May 5th at the American Legion and you'll see many African-Americans that support Hillary as well as many whites and hispanics that support Obama. If you attend the meeting you will see a group of people that understand there are differences in opinions but that we must all work together to win in November. Doing anything less is simply selfish, and honestly very much in contradiction with the platform of the Democratic Party. I second the motion. I will never, ever vote for Hiliary. If Obama doesn't win the nomination, I like others will stay at home. For those of you who will vote for John McCain if Hiliary doesn't win, is obviously a republican. You never had any real intentions of voting for Senator Obama in the first place.

in Austin and are Democrats who are for Obama. They will not vote for
hillary. I have wrestled with the thought of voting for McCain just to keep

Let's set the record straight. As a native North Carolinian, (an a liberal), anyone who has a garden or knows the least little thing about plants knows that down here in the beautiful south, when the weather gets hot pansies lie down and die. By the end of May everyone has ripped out their pansies and replanted them with petunias or geraniums or even marigolds, which stand up in the heat. While I will be the first to call Easley by the nickname "weasley", I defend his use of the word "pansy" as a reference to something which does not take the heat rather than a gay slur. Truth be told, Weasley is rather effeminate himself, in my opinion. Any liberal or conservative gardener who knows the joys of creating a garden in the south knows what I am talking about and would/should agree.

Give me a break, I am gay and I'm not offended. This is so lame. Just something the Obama people are grabbing at. Pansey to me doesn't reference gays what so ever. You can be a "Pansey" and not be gay, and not all gays are panseys. Its a simple term meaning a person who isn't a fighter.thats an example of how pathetic this elections is and the media jumping on every word someone uses and twisting it to mean what they want it to mean.

I havent heard the word pansy since I was called one in high school,many years ago. It is just another example of HRC doing anything to win. Slight us when we are not giving you a dinner to raise money for your campaign.
Just because "we" arent as visible as other minorities "we" are everwhere. I have already changed froom Edwards (not running) to Obama who is running.
