AMERICAblog: Hitmen charge $100 a victim as Basra honor killings rise

  • blakey · 12 months ago
$100 to kill a woman. Gee...remember, once upon a time, all the earnest talk from war hawks that invading Iraq would improve the status of women in that country?
  • ComradeRutherford · 12 months ago
But they did! This is exactly why the Conservatives invaded Iraq, to free women from that pesky thing called living!
  • ComradeRutherford · 12 months ago
This is exactly why the Conservatives invaded Iraq, to replace a secular government with a religious one. This is just what the Conservatives want here, religious extremists in control of all levels of governance, condoning murder based only on who they like and don't like, and not based on any rule of law.

Conservatives are clearly against everything that American stands for, the last 8 years have proven that...
  • Indigo · 12 months ago
I don't remember recent history all that clearly but it seems to me that Basra was occupied by the UK forces and much was made 5 years ago about what a wonderful job the British did pacifying the area and how cooperative the Basrans were. That was the one part of Iraq that was not under direct US control. Maybe that was some other Basra.

Barbarians! I think women had it better under Saddam.
  • Older_Wiser · 12 months ago
Shame, my ass. No woman should have to live under the yoke of male domination, no matter who or what says so. Murder is murder and there is no "honor" in it.
  • Bush Bites · 12 months ago
Why didn't they hack "Paul" to death instead?
  • Iraqi-American · 12 months ago
Honor killings were illegal, prosecuted, and hence rare under Saddam.
  • RevDrBillyBob · 12 months ago
This is what happens in retarded cultures.
  • Wisconsin Liberal · 12 months ago
That's what the "Christian" Fascists want here.
  • rodnacious · 12 months ago
I spent a lot of time in the ME; saw more barbaric stuff then the law allows. You can't teach civility to a people that have only known and lived by rules that we have never understood.

Bush never knew what he was getting this country into with a war in that arena. A total waste of time and money - let alone the lives given for nothing! It didn't change with the occupation by the British, and it won't change after we have given it all of what we have sacrificed so far.

Tell me again how Islam is the religion of peace
  • Verchiel · 12 months ago
You can condemn the inhuman actions of violent fundamentalists without smearing the millions of practitioners who'd never commit or condone such acts.
  • red_dwarf · 12 months ago
That is true Verchiel - the majority of Muslims would condemn such barbaric acts. Every sect, every religion has its fruitcakes. But, why have so few not been convicted or brought to justice?

Perhaps fear, the chaotic conditions under which the locals live (praise the surge!). This is one of the many points I have against Obama - who calims the surge was "victorious". Bullshit. I'm waiting for Obama to step up to the plate and speak the truth.
  • TheOriginalLiz · 12 months ago
"All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." Seems to apply

Isn't silence/inaction in the face of such an injustice wrong?
  • Verchiel · 12 months ago
Doesn't seem to apply at all, actually.

Refraining from (seemingly) snide comments about the religion, as a whole, while condemning the actions of fanatics isn't "silence/inaction." It's quite simple to do the latter while still avoiding the former.

Woman is the n###er of the world, said John Lennon. Violence against women is always ok.
  • Bush Bites · 12 months ago
Iraq was pretty secular until Bush decided they needed Fundamentalism too.

Who could have predited that a place labelled the "cradle of civilization" would be so unwilling to change?

Well Chimpy, now your buddies at Halliburton and Exxon are toasting their obscene profits made during your eight years fucking the world. I hope you are all very happy. What a shame we did not spend that money on providing basic health care to Americans; or perhaps really improving our schools; or maybe advancing medical research with stem cells; or fixing some of our roads and bridges; or, or, ad nauseum. Instead, you little spoiled fratbrat asshole, you squandered these millions on some kinda "see daddy Bush I've got big balls too" bullshit to prove your manhood to Bar and HW or some fucked up crap like that. You must have a very tiny dick. Now go hide in Highland Park (Dallas ritzy area) and wait till all five copies of "My Pet Goat" are on display at your new library. I hope to god there is also a burial plot there and we see your motorcade winding around Dallas ere long ala the Ronnie Raygun porn show when he died. Gipper Porn into Chimpy Porn.

    "..you little spoiled fratbrat asshole."

Bostonia - one of the most accurate and descriptive phrases I've seen to date describing the narcissistic dry drunk in the white house. Thanks to rePIGS hundreds of thousands of innocents have been slaughtered, and for what? Honour killings - how insane can man be?

We are strangers in a strange land.

They'll be converted to Mormonism after they're dead, so it'll all work out.

All religions are barbarous, Islam just leads the pack.
  • lilybart · 12 months ago
Christianity was barbaric 600 years ago, and since Islam is 600 years younger, they will change over time too. The progression of religion; belief by force, then by culture pressure, then finally, quesitoning and demise.

And there is the shameful state of Illinois....

HIGHLAND, Ill. -- Five friends, one blind, another an amputee and all developmentally impaired to some degree, are losing their home here next week. Community Link, the nonprofit agency that runs the group home, can no longer afford to keep it open. Its main source of funds, the cash-strapped state of Illinois, owes it $1.4 million.

These women are killed for the "honor" of the head of the household. If the newpapers and the enlightened people in the country would call these men out and shame them for the killings it would start helping. I know in other countries the news reports these as bad, but if the local papers and news would call these guys by name and say they are not honorable would help. I understand this would put the news people in danger, but isn't that why we are over there?
  • TXfemmom · 12 months ago
No, shame won't work, unless the shame also inflicts them with say, castration, and then the killing of women WOULD STOP.
  • lilybart · 12 months ago
What Bush's wars have done to the women of Iraq and the failure of Afghanistan is criminal.

Pre-war Iraq was a secular country where women could wear what they wanted, hold any job, go out with friends....now that there is a power vacuum, the radicals have taken over and women's lives are Islamist hells.

No one talks about the woman, so thanks for this mention.

Whom will Arab men marry after all they've killed off all their women?
  • TXfemmom · 12 months ago
Goats, since many of the men smell like them, and act like them, anyway.
  • green_libertarian · 12 months ago
The illegal invasion and occupation also caused the destruction of the centuries old Christian community in Iraq.

Must be time for Laura Bush to make a trip over there to proclaim how far women have come in the new society.
  • benb · 12 months ago
I just got back from India where at least once a week I would read about an 'honor killing' in the local newspaper. Dowry murders were also reported---wives die in 'kitchen fires', are found hanged in their houses when everyone else is out, or just blatantly forced to drink poison...all so the son can remarry and his family collect another dowry from his new bride's family.

Being a woman in these countries ought to be enough to be granted asylum in the West.
  • TXfemmom · 12 months ago
Might I suggest that some American and Western women form a charity to assist in stopping these "honor killings". Fight fire with fire, perhaps. Pay those killers who can be had for $100, say $200 or $250 to get the males in the families of women killed in this manner. Perhaps, don't even kill them, just castrate them, and laugh.

With my knowledge of the mind of Muslim men, this would do more to stop "honor" killings than anything I can recommend.

I can see it now, an honor wall with either the pictures of the men involved in the killings of women for "honor" along with the rotting testes of others, with their names and faces along with the testes. Believe, me just one hundred of these cases in Pakistan, India, Iraq, etc. and HONOR KILLINGS WOULD STOP.

Say what you will against him, but he, his party, his spies, all knew what was going on in Iraq. From the swamp people in the south to the Kurds in the north, Iraq is a tinderbox. America, again, for the umpteenth time, should hang its head in shame for not minding its own business. If only God could forgive us for usurping his power. We pretended to be his anointed messenger on earth.

That kind of inequality would take generations to change - if it is even possible at all.

I recently saw a video on the internets of a woman who had been raped, being stoned to death. They buried her up to her shoulders while people threw rocks at her head. When she appeared to be lifeless, they dug her out. When they realized she wasn't quite dead yet, they re-buried her and let the crowd finish the job.

People who can do this kind of thing - I don't know - they just seem less evolved or something.
