Friedman is an ass of the highest order. Someone wrote on here the other day that his wife's rich parents lost a bundle lately--90% of their fortune. Synchronicity, a lovely thing. Wonder if the Friedman mansion is paid off yet...

Interesting. The Orlando merchants reported that they were off to a good start.

If you think it's bad today wait until we start to pay back the hundreds of billions of dollars that went into some one's pocket with this giveaway.
Here are some graphs that show the amount spent on different things, like WWII & this bailout.

Funny, but yesterday, as we drove through Mooresville, NC, an upper income bedroom community on Lake Norman, about 7 miles from us, there was hardly any traffic. Of course, those people fly to Atlanta and NYC to shop...which meant to me that the poorer inhabitants of this area don't even have the cash to go to WalMart right now or any of the other "cheapo" stores in that area which abound over there. I sure don't have any extra cash right now but I don't spend it in Mooresville, either.
Usually Saturday traffic there is like rush hour in Charlotte

Funny how the 3 to 7.2% figures are spun to mean both good and bad in various reports I've read...I go along with your CNBC-linked story's quote of Joseph Feldman that inflation flattened any rise. Several local and national cable live pops at malls at various times on Friday and Saturday were noticeable for the missing shoppers and the live reporter's unusual salesman-like pitch for a "hot" product or a "great deal". I wondered how many local stations sought to undergird a waffling, sales terrified client with a store live shot. In my experience, a sale can be stymied with a needy pitch and I’ve heard some very needy pitches this weekend.

Would you know anything about an English primitive table, pine I believe, with about a 30 in octagonal top, a turned pedestal with 3 legs. I bought it from an Englishman 35 years ago who said it was his grandmother's...the top is lacquered and you can see the wood, but the legs have been stained a very dark color. It also drops by way of a metal latch.

We (the mall) recently sold something similar for 1300.
Not a good time to maximize top furniture prices.

Thanks a bunch. I tried to consign it a long time ago, but got no bites. Tried to find something similar online but no luck. I paid the guy $5 for it.

What the heck...business is business. I've attended some killer auctions recently...definitely a buyer’s market if the buyer has cash.

"When the moon is in the seventh house, and Jupiter aligns with Mars..." A little levity is a good thing.
Well, it's not exactly the Age of Aquarius, but the moon, Jupiter and Mars are aligned this weekend. I saw Jupiter and Mars Friday night...best seen in the southwest sky about an hour after sunset.
Yep, we aren't buying a damned thing other than gas and food. I think my parents are getting my kids some things, though, but I ain't spending a dime.

I had to make a trip to Petsmart yesterday (for anyone in the DC area, the one on Rt. 50 in Nova just outside Arlington.) Very light traffic in the lot, close parking, no lines inside. But I didn't expect Petsmart to be doing brisk holiday business so decided to see what the sales were at Target. Again, close parking (near the door, difficult to find on a typical Saturday, unheard of for the weekend after Thanksgiving.) Didn't really see any deals that tempted me other than a couple pair of sweatpants for under $5 each.
My husband and I bought a new stove, microwave, and fridge at Sears but I can't see how that helps the economy with 0% interest and no payments for a year, if we choose. Of course, we'll pay it off within the first year. I guess they're counting on less savvy customers to make some money off of.
But that's it for our Christmas other than a few family members, mostly for our 6 year old niece. Six year olds don't understand recession so can't ruin her holiday.

We did the Sears thing with a new stove several years ago. We never heard a thing from them again--no more offers, etc. But they did send a new credit card a couple of months ago which we have declined to use, since we didn't use the other one for anything but the special. If the refrigerator dies, we might consider it.

Hmmmm. Seems to be some confusion on this topic...
Interesting comments and the fact that sales are up 3% (10.6 Billion) on Black Friday! I just wondering how much of that 10.6 Billion is on credit and if people are just not worried about it or that they are not thinking ahead as to how they will pay their debts off after the New Year! With the economy in a recession, job security does not exist!! We need to learn to take control of our financial future ourselves. I can hear your questions, HOW THE %$ DO I DO THAT? It's not easy, but it is very possible. The internet is a vast library of resources at our disposal, take advantage of TODAY.

Yes I know, miserable news. IT ROSE!!!! But only 3 percent!!!! agaiin, IT ROSE!!!!! But only 3 percent. IT ROSE!!!! Despite the lously economy.... but only 3 percent.
The greed and avarice of Wall Street never ceases to amaze me. I bet all these retail CEO's are busy chewing out their underlings as to why they failed deliver them their fat Christmas bonus this year.
