AMERICAblog: If John McCain can't control Palin now, what's going to happen if he becomes president?

  • Joe_Bourgeois · 1 year ago
What about a President and VP that pretty openly despise one another?

Looking from the outside in (from Scotland) I think the campaign is great entertainment with Sarah Palin in it. She is a godsend to comedy everywhere. Couldn't the republicans just slip Tina Fey in in Palin's place? I'm sure you would get more sense out of Tina.

I think though that Palin would be a good VP for Obama!! - I mean no-one would dare try to shoot him knowing that Sarah Palin would be stepping in.......

The people who are calling for Obama's assassination are Sarah Palin supporters. They are yelling these threats at her rallies. So no, that theory doesn't hold.

Looking from the inside in, I find very little to laugh about concerning Palin. Tina Fey is a talented comic and Palin gave her a lot to work with, but that's comedy not reality. What's most troubling are all the people we see cheering for Palin at her huge rallies. Who are these people and will they ever recover from their brain injuries? If Palin were to become President, Roe vs Wade would be struck down, creationism would be taught in schools as equivalent to science, and foreign heads of state would have trouble keeping a straight-face in her presence. On top of that, Todd Palin would become the de facto ruler of the country-- a guy with a high school education who hates the United States. The biggest problem for Sarah Palin would be her inability to find quality people to serve in her government, and she would end up with a bunch cronies, just like she has in Alaska. No, Palin is no laughing matter. If she was, the joke would be on us.

John, I keep forgetting about the difference in humour between the UK and US. Frankly though, you've had a joke in office for the past eight years. After the Florida debacle, we thought it was just a fix. We really could not believe that you guys actually voted Bush in for a second term.

You now have someone running for VP that shouldn't be allowed to run a village knitting club. You say it's no laughing matter, but you guys have allowed this to happen. We have some crackpot poloticians in the UK too, but frankly, someone like Sarah Palin wouldn't get in a position to run a local Council, never mind the situation she is in right now. Surely this says a lot for McCain's judgement. Mind you, I wouldn't let him run a Council either. You're right that this is a serious matter, but to be honest there is just so much going on in this to laugh at, from our sense of humour, even though the consequences of Palin actually being in a position of great power are scary.

You know where to place your vote......

Actually, I don't believe "we" allowed any of this to happen. Bush's operatives stole the election in Florida in 2000, which is played out quite well in the HBO movie "Recount". Also, Al Gore was a weak campaigner and Karl Rove chewed him up. Even so, people forget that Al Gore won the popular vote in 2000. As far as Palin is concerned, the presidential nominee picks his running-mate, so there is no voter responsibility for Palin being on the ticket. I think the vast majority of Americans see through her well-orchestrated (and well-dressed) campaign speeches. Nobody will ever forget the Katie Couric interviews and how utterly incoherent Palin was. It's not that I don't have a sense of humor of about it. I find both Palin and McCain eminently mockable and fodder for great comedy. What worries me is that so many Americans seem to be cheering for these two candidates. Our deteriorating educational system has come back to haunt us.

it's called a short leash and a pinch collar, she'll get used to it, she would probably find her "g"s and pronounce nuclear correct after a few pops on that short leash. Down bitch!

If McCain can't make Palin behave herself, how's he going to deal with Al Qaeda?

This has all the makings of a bad sit com.

Don't forget the prequel: That's my Bush!. It tanked after a few months.... Bush was too difficult to parody, apparently.

    Bingo.

Cheney was an evil bastard who has a special place in hell reserved for him, but at least he showed no interest in stirring up the religious right-wing wackos in this country. The idiots who are shouting death threats towards Obama at her rallies would feel they finally have a voice if Palin is elected - someone to sympathize with their desire to rid the country of minorities, gays, foreigners, feminists, and anyone who votes Democratic.

The Constitution gives the VP only one duty, to serve as president of the Senate. Cheney has power only because Bush ceded it to him. It doesn't have to be that way in the next administration, even if McCain is elected. Given the rancor between Palin and McCain, it is highly unlikely she would have a significant position in his administration.
