AMERICAblog: Ifill Book Public Weeks Before McCain Agreed To Have Her Moderate VP Debate

  • slappymagoo · 1 year ago
I wonder who McCain would consider appropriately unbiased. Coulter? Ingraham? Malkin? Hasselbeck?
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 1 year ago
Now I would pay ANY money to see Joe Biden rip Malkin or Coulter a new one during a debate like that. And watch Caribou Barbie just stand in disbelief as he did it. That would be fun! Pass the popcorn!
  • larz · 1 year ago
I would like to see a Palin - Hasselbeck interview. It would be the end of both their careers.
  • warbler · 1 year ago
He's blind in his left eye. It's why he wouldn't look at Obama and the reason he has such difficulty using a teleprompter. He's hiding it.
The question is why is he blind in that eye and when is he going to reveal the truth? The day after the election?
  • michaelt · 1 year ago
No, they'll just trot sara out in an old man costume.
  • JohnInTexas · 1 year ago
You know that makes a lot of sense, blind or nerve damage that interferes with his peripheral vision. The melanoma he had removed and the lymph nodes on that side may have done some damage. (Oh and he eats some really unhealthy shit, has high cholesterol and I think blood pressure problems...that doesn't help a 72 year old live to 76 at all, that an he is allergic to exercise other than flapping his jaws).
  • metaspelunker · 1 year ago
Apparently McPain has already pronounced Ms. Ifill "professional". See www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZGtblX5OlY

    A rare flash of rationality.
  • larz · 1 year ago
More "gotcha" campaigning from the Old Guy and the 2nd Place Beauty Queen. God I can't wait until November 5th when they crawl back into their holes.
  • Ben Dover · 1 year ago
McCain, being the lyingworthlessgodamnedrepublican that he is, will go to any length to cancel the debate to protect Caribou Barbie from the mean ol' press.
McCain has about as much faith in his running mate as the rest of the country, zilch.
  • jcgraham77 · 1 year ago
Remember that tattle tail in 1st grade? He would always tattle on whoever--especially if it benefited him. Well guess what. He is 500 years older, a lot crankier and has a wet diaper.
  • LeeFromHamburgNY · 1 year ago
Can Mac and his campaign idiots find anything else to interrupt the campaign? The snowball is gaining speed and getting larger. The latest AP poll has Obama ahead by 7 points and ahead in Fl., Pa., and OHIO. After seeing the nervous twitch (or whatever is was) this morning, I'm wondering if the poor old f__ker will make it to Nov. 4th...
  • cromulent · 1 year ago
Let's get Katie Couric to moderate it! If anyone can make Palin look good, it's her, right? Right? Oh, wait...

Soros proposes that the government should recapitalize banks for an equity position.

    http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/soros-float...

This plan, though not a panecea, holds more promise than the government simply buying the shitpile through Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan. Worthy of debate and consideration.

Amazing. Whatever happened to "when the going gets tough, the tough get going?

Seems McCain's version is 'when the going gets tough, stomp your feet, whine and complain.'
  • grandma · 1 year ago
Exactly....if they can't take the heat they don't belong in the kitchen.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
McCain must be in his 2nd childhood.....acting like a jerk in the debate with Obama...and now whining because Ifil might be biased.....well welcome to reality.....Brokaw is moderating the next Pres debate...I don't see Obama whining about that.

If Palin can't handle a debate with a possible (though I high doubt) biased moderater she is not fit for the office of VP.
  • martha · 1 year ago
Brokaw has gone to McCain's swanky b-day parties and is now serving as liason to the McCain campaign from NBC because McCain thinks NBC is biased. Brokaw also got Olberman and Matthews removed from being the election anchors. Brokaw LOVES McCain but you won't her Obama complaining when he moderates the debate.
  • Rob Mule · 1 year ago
Will Brokaw cry to GE execs during breaks if Senator Obama comes off too liberal???

Homosexual 'journalist' Matt Drudge is enflaming the Republicans like crazy. They are flooding Amazon with the most racist crap I have ever seen. This is disgusting. Yet the MSM like CNN are now dutifully reporting Drudge's talking points right on que. Rick Sanchez just spent a whole segment repeating Drudge and WND's talking points. This is outrageous.
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
Drudge makes me sick. He pretends to be a journalist, but he's just a Right Wing hack/tool. I think he's actually very dangerous. Like it or not, he can make or break a story, and so many people go there, they just assume that's all the news there is.

    Very dangerous man and website.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
If Matt Drudge had been born in 1920's Germany as a Jew, he would have founded the "Jews for Hitler" party when Hitler came to power. He is a traitor, along with most Log Cabin Republicans who put greed above the civil rights and protections of the average LGBT American.
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 1 year ago
I have a buddy who's actually "topped" Miss Drudge. He has a real thing for black cock exceeding ten. (Then again so do I.)

No! NO! NO! and HELL NO! What is this, play day in the nursery. This is the vaunted war hero and the party of YoYo and personal responsibility. This ought to be mocked. These idiots could not have done a Google search before agreeing with Ifill as the moderator. These people are so retarded as to not have done a single bit of research on the moderator until the day before the debate?

Oh, wait a minute, it is not their stupidity. It is there belief that we are just so stupid as to go along with this as an issue.

The conservatives are using "the dog ate my homework" excuse to bail out of the debates. If McCain surrogates are thumping the tub with this talking point about Gwen Ifil, it really means that Palin's debate prep is really going badly.

Gwen Ifil is a very good professional journalist, I have watch her on "Washington Week" for years, and she knows how to handle a roundtable discussion. The debate should have good journalist managing it, and she is one of the best. My only criticism of her, is having Cheney acolyte and sometimes brown noser Pete Williams on the programs. He sounds like spokesman for Log Cabin Republicans.
  • blackwolf · 1 year ago
I agree: The debate prep is going badly, and they're thumping the pavement to get into Ifil's head. It won't work. She's fair and balanced. This works for the dems though, it just makes McCain look grumpier day by day.
  • DCinDC · 1 year ago
McCain seems to be having health problems. His camp will not let outside doctors examine him nor release his health records to doctors not connected to his campaign. It seems the rumors McCain is a very sick man are true.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
McCain knows he is sick but is DESPERATE for personal reasons to become President. He wants to prove to his Mommy, once and for all, he is better than his father and grandfather who were successful Admirals. This is his only way to prove it or outrank them for once in his, otherwise disappointing, life. We are seeing the same kind of family dysfunction that propelled Dubya to run for President again. I'm tired of the Presidency being used by wealthy families as some kind of consolation prize for kids who couldn't or chose not to succeed at the level they should have when they were younger.
  • henrythefifth · 1 year ago
Yup. Just read the new Rolling Stone article...it tackles this and a lot of other things.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
    Wow, haven't read it.
  • okojo · 1 year ago
I am thinking with McCain's facial twitching, the doctors that removed his lymph nodes hit a couple facial nerves, or hit one or two tendons. I don't think McCain has had a stroke. However, he does get work up which isn't a good way to handle a stressful job.

If McCain has some serious health problems, it will come out after the election, whether he wins or he loses. Much like Cheney and his heart attacks after the 2000 election, or his falling asleep on the job because he is not getting enough blood flow to his brain.

Campaigning 24/7 while losing is going to be stressful for anyone in that position. I do think the McCain campaign is hiding something about his health, given their lameass 3 hour health records treasure hunt.

It wouldn't surprise me if John McCain gets so frustrated that he employs the Mike Tyson-strategy of biting someone's ear.
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
I mentioned earlier this morning, wouldn't it be hilarious (for us) if he got so enraged at Obama during one of the debates, the Secret Service had to come in and escort Obama off the stage for his own safety? HA!!!

His temper is simmering just under the surface and he's had such a crappy last couple of weeks, it's not going to take much to push his senile ass over the edge...
  • henrythefifth · 1 year ago
    Now that is funny!
  • henrythefifth · 1 year ago
Yes, they missed it when it was in the CONSERVATIVE Washington Times in July, I'm so sure.

    http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/jul/23...

And now they start whining about it 24 hours before the debate.

The drama queens reign supreme once again.

Of course they knew about it and have been waiting for WEEKS to pitch their latest hissy fit.
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
OK....hmmm, so who thinks this might be THE reason they want to postpone the debate? Ought to be interesting to watch over the next few hours.
  • TheAngryFag · 1 year ago
I don't think this is "dementia" so much is it is just pure political chicanery by people who think the American people are completely and utterly stupid. John McCain knows his Vice Presidential choice was absolutely horrid and he must have come to the conclusion that the public generally knows she was only picked for her vagina, she appeals to 'the base', and the "MILF' factor and not because of any other reason. Candidates who are infinitely more qualified have vaginas and those that don't have them that do appeal to "the base". There is no feasible way that he can drop her now that it's almost a month until the election and still come out looking like a real leader instead of a fumbling old man.

So now he is running for cover his campaign is desperately trying to find something no matter how inane to try and deflect the issue. He tried to can the debate last week with his parachuting back to DC for the economic crisis telling David Letterman "I'm getting on a plane right now" and then getting caught doing an interview with Katie Couric instead. That ploy did not work so now he is trying this stupid angle.

He and his lobbyist advisers are trying anything they can to avoid the blood bath that Biden will have tomorrow night.
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
Angry Fag, you've got to see this video on my blog:

    http://www.pinkpanthersblog.com/

HRC did a video on why we need to be VERY afraid of Palin - Mc$ame administration.
  • TheAngryFag · 1 year ago
Just watched it. But I am not really afraid of Palin because of her Anti-Gay record and all the bible-bangers she hangs out with so much as I am afraid of her for her stupidity and McCain's stupidity for picking her in the first place though.

To me McCain/Palin are interchangeable names with any other Republican who sucks up to Dobson and co.
  • lucky hussein · 1 year ago
"the base" how poetic. I believe "Al quieda" translates into "the base"
  • TheAngryFag · 1 year ago
You're right on. There's a reason why Pam Spaulding, myself, and others have referred to groups like Focus on the Family, American Family Association, and so forth who supposedly are representatives of "the base" as the American Taliban.

Smearing a journalist for the sake of smearing a journalist. Guilt-by-racial association.

Gwen Ifill seems to be writing a legit book... its title reflects an undeniable truth: Obama heralds -- and represents -- the new black political power structure.

Covering this as a "Republicans worry that" versus "media defends" story isn't intellectually honest. Republicans aren't actually worrying. They're pretending to worry in order to divert attention from the content of tomorrow night's debate.

    http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/20...
  • bluestockton · 1 year ago
And since the book hasn't even been published yet, McCain can hardly object to its contents.

My biggest problem with the bill is it isn't proven to cure the credit crisis. It is a short term band-aid to get us through the elections. It keeps the average low information voter from experiencing any pain before our elections and that is about it. No one says this HUGE bill will resolve anything. They are hoping it "might" which isn't good enough for me.
  • Webster · 1 year ago
Not to mention that no one is discussing the $25 billion loan bailout to the American Auto Industry to retool for fuel-efficient vehicles. Something which somehow GM/Ford/Chrysler obviously never *gasp* realized might be a good idea.

So we also get to pay for the past few Bush-years of Hummers hogging the roadways with their gas-guzzling ways.

How much are they paying those auto exec CEOs? "Duh, well we never saw that coming."
  • KerrynowCampau · 1 year ago
The American auto industry is the LEAST deserving of ANY help. We already subsidize them by paying for the infrastructure to drive their large piece of sh*t vehicles on.
  • okojo · 1 year ago
They are not going to pick Judy Woodruff. Her husband is Al Hunt, former liberal op/ed writer for the Wall Street Journal, which will get the right wing loonies more in a froth. The only person the right wing will be appease by is Bob Schieffer of CBS News, who's brother was GW Bush baseball partner for the Texas Rangers and now ambassador to Japan. The Right Wing loonies will love someone like Brit Hume to be moderator.

Gwen Ifil is a pretty good choice. Even when she did an Op/Ed like she did against Don Imus, she was pretty thoughtful and well written, even though she tore Imus a new asshole, (She rightly so, he called her a cleaning lady)

I really think the Right Wing is doing this to spin the debate if it doesn't go Palin way. (the odds are highly likely it won't go her way) They may not want to bailout Wall Street, but they are hedging their risks like any trader
  • An_American_Karol · 1 year ago
"UPDATE: John McCain just told Fox News that he has no problem with Ifill moderating the debate. ""I think that Gwen Ifill is a professional and I think she will do a totally objective job, because she is a highly respected professional," McCain said."

I think the McCain campaign is in such disarray now ,and considering his decline in the polls, they are desperate and grasping at straws.
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
    So true...

We have to remember too that even after whatever happens tomorrow night, there are still two more Debates with Obama and McCain, and you know that the longer this goes on, the meaner and nastier McCain and/or his campaign people will get.

It's going to be a wild ride over the next 4 1/2 weeks...

    Everyone fasten their seatbelts!
  • houstonray · 1 year ago
Well, that shoots down my theory that they would use this as the reason to keep her away...haha.

I guess it's too late now to find a reason to postpone, so I guess we'll all get to watch it unfold tomorrow night. I can't wait!!
  • cowboyneok · 1 year ago
We have to remember if Palin is allowed to do just generalities then she will win the debate. She needs to be PINNED DOWN and has to EXPLAIN her remarks. Otherwise, she could win just by showing up.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
True....and .they sure changed the format to her advantage.
  • lynne · 1 year ago
My perception of Ifill is that I never really much liked her...if I recall, she has given conservatives a pass in the past (so to speak). No where near FOX levels mind, but enough that out of PBS's commentators and news analysts, I like her least.

THAT is probably why McCain was just peachy keen with her in the first place, book or not.

I think Woodruff would be awesome! Better'n in Ifill, anyway.

It seems patently obvious that Sen. McCain is at best demented.
  • ccrnjr · 1 year ago
People will judge if Palin was treated fairly, no matter who moderates the debate. Palin has already made a fool of herself. Saying she was picked on by a mean PBS journalist will only solidify the fact that she is not up to the job of Vice President. Scared of Gwen Ifill, of all people. If she can't handle a debate moderated by Ifill, then what can she handle.

By now, people who want to vote for McCain/Palin will do so, come hell or high water.
  • bowseat93 · 1 year ago
I think Ifill should stay. But if we needed a switch, not sure it has to be a woman. Maybe George Will or Andrew Sullivan?
  • shell · 1 year ago
It is obvious that McCain wants Ifill, because now they have an excuse why Palin lost. Whoever was scheduled, they would have an excuse -- and their objection would come right now. Right before the debate.
  • schreff · 1 year ago
Wow, another far left liberal moderator who has a book out that is proObama...Do you think she can be fair and balanced? If she was any type of person she would have said she has a book about Obama coming out and she would financially benefit from being the moderator. She should immediately disqualify herself. This is exactly what is wrong in Washington and now there is a conflict of interest in the news media too. Come on Ifill have enough guts to tell it like it is and remove yourself as moderator.
  • erykah · 1 year ago
The book is not about Obama. The book is about Blacks in American politic which includes a chapter on Obama. It's funny how folks judge something they haven't read.

    BERNIE SANDERS FOR PRESIDENT!!

Wow, Bernie has made a MAGNIFICENT speech on the Senate floor right now on CSPAN, reciting a litany of evils, and proposing that there be a progressive tax structure to pay for the bailout.

Bernie proposes that the top one percent pay ten percent more for the next five years. A modest proposal.

We should all read a trascript of that speech. It was terrific.
  • grandma · 1 year ago
How much do they have to 'mollycoddle' Palin anyway........just shows the lack of any kind of judgment on McCain's part in choosing her.

    This is posted at Kos:

NPR: Given what you’ve said Senator, is there an occasion where you could imagine turning to Governor Palin for advice in a foreign policy crisis.

MCCAIN: I’ve turned to her advice many times in the past, I can’t imagine turning to Senator Obama or Senator Biden because they’ve been wrong. They were wrong about Iraq, wrong about Russia –

He's turned to her many times in the past for advice in a foreign policy crisis???...when he only met her once before August !?!?!
  • schreff · 1 year ago
I think Jim Lehrer did an excellent job as moderator in the first debate. There should be absolutely no question as to even the possibility of conflict of interest as both parties could use this as an excuse. Also, I don't want Ifill to make a dime extra because of her book. What a plug and all the free advertising....I am crying foul, foul, foul and not because of her political motivation but because of her benefiting financially. It stinks and the debate commission has a lot of explaining to do.
  • Wild_Weasel · 1 year ago
How much of the Wall Street bailout will Dick Grasso pay.

He got $140 million for nothing. Nothing. He is a symbol, one of many, who have fed at the public trough. Pigs at the trough, who now should pay.

We need a progressive structure to pay for the bailout.

We also need an independent commission which includes Nobel prize winners, scholars and others to investigate the current economic disaster, and make recommendations that insure that this never happens again.
  • mungobuh · 1 year ago
I'm most surprised that McCain even agreed to Ifill. Isn't she from PBS, a network that conservatives usually view as too liberal? This is not to put Gwen down...I don't have an opinion of her either way. I'm just surprised, that's all. I also never knew that the candidates (assuming Obama also had a say in the moderator selection) even had a say. Color me uninformed, I guess.

Yeah, this stinks as another debate-filibuster.
  • erykah · 1 year ago
John, I strongly disagree that Ifill should be pulled. In that case Sean Hannity should have never interviewed Palin and Rove should be let go from Fox. This is bullshit. Ifill wrote a book about Blacks in politics which includes a discussion on Obama. How is that a conflict of interest? Folks who are calling it a pro-Obama book haven't read the book to even make that assessment. .They merely assume that because Ifill is black that she is in the tank for Obama. This is a professional journalist and a senior journalist at that. She know how to do her job. She is not a novice. Another reason Ifill should not be pulled is that this entire political discourse has been dominated by white men and women. African Americans and other people of color have been all but locked out of most of the discussion and analysis.. I am glad to see a black woman for once at center stage in this political discussion. Ifill will do fine. She is not going to put her career in jepardy for McCain/Palin. This is the pot calling the kettle black. Please, this is a smoke screen. They need to leave her alone.
  • nuiosv · 1 year ago
An interview is very different than a debate. If Obama is elected, her book will record higher sales. She has a vested interest in this election. You can tell she is unable to be non-partisan from her unprofessional reaction of Palin's speech. This has nothing to do with race. If you honestly don't understand the conflict of interest, then you should have your head checked for brain damage.
  • erykah · 1 year ago
Are you suggesting that an interviewer with a "conflict of interest" poses less of a threat than a debate moderator with the same so called "conflict of interest?"?That logic is so skewed it does not warrant the dignity of a response.? At any rate,?there is no fucking conflict of interest here.? The accusations that are flying around about Ifill are not only premature but irrelevant.? As Ifill stated herself, she has not written the chapter on Obama and the book highlights other African American politicians including Colin Powell? and Corey Booker who?are both?Republican.?The book is not a pro-Obama book as has been characterized by the right wing media. It is an examination of African American political figures and their engagement with the political process in the post Civil Rights era.?Obama and a host of Black politicians are changing the game and Ifill's book provides a critical analysis of this phenomenon.??So, are you telling me that Black?professionals such as Ifill, a senior correspondent,?cannot?engage in the intellectual exercise of examining the affect of African Americans on the American political process?without compromising her objectivity as a VP debate moderator?? Are you suggesting that Ifill is the only journalist who has a vested interest in the outcome of this election?? If so, then you are the one with brain damage.?? George Stephanofolous (sp), a former Clinton aide, moderated the last debate between Hillary and Barack.? Should he have recused himself? ?Tom Brokaw is serving as the liason between the McCain campaign and NBC.? Should he recuse himself as well from moderating the next presidential debate between Obama and McCain?? Do these relationships demonstrate a conflict of interest?? Or do you think because?they are white men they would have no problem being objective??? Do you honestly think this debate is going to determine the outcome of the election?? As for Ifill not being enthusiastic about Palin's speech, that's not her job.? In fact, as long as I have followed Ifill's career,?I

have never seen her show emotion one way or the other about the news?reports. ??In my opinion, and I indeed have a right to it, Ifill should moderate this debate and afterwards the American people should decide whether or not she did her job.? It is obvious that McCain is working the refs and trying to intimidate the media.? This is a smoke screen so move on.? There is nothing to see here.

Since Sarah Palin reads all the news, I'm pretty surprised she didn't know about Ifill's book. Why didn't she tell McSame?
  • schreff · 1 year ago
From what I read below about Ifill's book is You Can't Judge A Book By Its' Cover......Well, read my comments and I am not referring to black or white or anything like that......not referring to Obama, Palin, McCain...... I am talking about dollars and cents (sense) which a lot of people don't have. Ifill tends to make additional money from the publicity of being a debate moderator. It is happening right now with us discussing this issue. Is this fair? Again, I ask if she wants to moderate why doesn't she agree to donate the proceeds of this book to charity. Too much being read into the politics of this and not enough about the conflict of interest.
