Clinton Told True Tale of Woe, Says Kin

    By Anne E. Kornblut
The aunt of a young pregnant woman who died after a hospital told her she needed to pay $100 up front for care said in an interview on Monday that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has been telling the story accurately on the campaign trail -- following claims by a different Ohio hospital that it did not turn the patient away.

For weeks, Clinton repeated an anecdote she heard in Ohio on Feb. 28 involving a young woman who lost her baby and later died because she lacked health insurance and did not have $100 to gain access to a nearby hospital.

But over the weekend, Clinton came under fire when officials at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, after reading about her remarks, demanded that she stop recounting it because the patient, Trina Bechtel, was admitted there and did have insurance.

That part, it turns out, is true. But so is Clinton's claim that Bechtel did not get care at another hospital that wanted a $100 pre-payment before seeing her, according to the young woman's aunt, Lisa Casto. "It's a true story," said Casto, 53.

Casto added some details that were not part -- or differed from -- the Clinton anecdote: She said her niece had previously been in debt to a local hospital that later sent her a letter informing her that she could only be treated there in the future if she gave them a $100 deposit. At the time she went into debt to that hospital, Casto said, Bechtel was uninsured, though she later obtained health insurance and was insured at the time of her death.

Casto said she did not want to give the name of the offending hospital because the flood of calls over the incident has overwhelmed her and Meigs County deputy sheriff Bryan Holman, a friend of hers who retold the story to Clinton when she campaigned in southern Ohio.

But court records show that Bechtel had a civil judgment against her by the Holzer Hospital Foundation for the amount of $4,426, entered in 2002, which was repaid in 2005. A call to an official at Holzer Medical Center, which is run by the foundation, in Ohio was not immediately returned.

Casto said her niece, who suffered from preeclampsia during her pregnancy, did not seek care at the first hospital when she fell ill because she knew she did not have the $100 out-of-pocket she believed she would need to be seen. Instead, she went to O'Bleness Memorial Hospital, where her baby was stillborn. Bechtel was later flown to Columbus and died there. She was 35.

Casto said she has been stunned by the amount of negative attention her niece's story generated, and that she was sorry it had hurt the Clinton campaign. She was, and is, she said, a supporter. "Did I vote for Hillary?" she said. "You'd better bet I did."

I read about all of these "conflicts" earlier in the day and was once again horrified by the Clinton's hypocrisy! Just when I think I have seen it all, they come up with new material.

Truthfully, I voted for Bill twice and actually really respected the man, liked the way he governed (with the exception of his private fetishes) and was happy overall with his tenure. These days, any respect I once had for him (along with Hillary) has vanished and will never again be regained.

Don't these two realize that they have and are currently antagonizing more and more people with their shoddy and shifty ways? I am totally disgusted with the lot of them.

monica's gotta be pissed... she didn't even get any cash for it, and she wound up with no reputation to speak of.

they fuck us all for cash... and they're looked up to for some reason.

Well, wait a minute -- are we really saying that it's a BAD thing that Hillary and Bill have some different positions on issues?

Are we really saying that every couple in the nation must agree on every political issue?

There's nothing inconsistent with Bill having one opinion on the Olympics and Hillary having another, and to suggest otherwise is just reaching for a way to slam the Clintons.

    Maybe, Mike H.

But Bubba is most certainly working for the Clinton Campaign, and Obama gets raked over the coals whenever anybody who works in his campaign says anything at variance with his stated positions.

So, let's see Hillary renounce Bubba's positions on these issues.
  • Bush_Bites · 1 year ago
And, by the way, she'd also have to renounce the positions of half her campaign's leadership.

Mark Penn isn’t the only Hillary Rodham Clinton supporter on the wrong side of the Colombia trade agreement.

The Democratic-leaning advocacy firm the Glover Park Group, former home to Clinton campaign spokesman Howard Wolfson, signed a $40,000 per month contract with the government of Colombia in April of 2007 to promote the very agreement that Clinton now rails against on the presidential campaign trail.

That means Glover Park Group was arguing the same position as Penn's firm. The contentious Clinton strategist and Burson-Marsteller chief executive lost his campaign job over the weekend after The Wall Street Journal revealed that he’d met with Colombian officials to plot strategy on the pact.

Several other Glover Park employees have deep connections with the Clintons, including founding partner Joe Lockhart, who served as the White House press secretary under President Bill Clinton, and Joel Johnson, who was a senior communications adviser in the Clinton White House.

Six employees of Glover Park Group contributed a total of nearly $20,000 to Clinton’s campaign in 2007, according to data kept by the Center for Responsive Politics.

Sen. Clinton is running for the Democratic nomination for president and holds some positions that differ from her husband's views. Sen. Clinton should be required to defend her positions on trade, economic policies, etc.
Former President Clinton is not running for President. Should you want to tell him who he may speak to and about what, by all means, go ahead. Just don't be surprised at the results.
    See you at the convention.

    Muchas gracias!

Didn't Columbia give Bill funds for speaking?
  • dula · 1 year ago
Yeah, let's all go back to the 90's ...things were so much better then for the worker. Bill did nothing to strengthen Unions/Labor rights or make a stable future for the Middle Class. The economy may have been booming thanks to dot com bubble and Bill's ability to erase the deficit (give credit where it is due) but none of those short term benefits were able to protect the average worker from Neocon rule.

Holy Cow! So Bill and Hilary ARE different people! So Bill WON'T be dictating policy in a HRC White House! What a relief!
  • merle7 · 1 year ago
You get two for the price of one remember bill and hillary what reflects on bill does reflect on hillary. She did fire Mark Penn because she knows he will come out and tell the truth. He was dealing on both he and the clintons interest. And by the way Rev Wright is not running for president either.

Bill Clinton has to be frustrated. If he could get Hillary elected by hook or crook, he stands to possibly become a billionaire (or maybe just a couple hundred mil) by pedaling influence.
