AMERICAblog: In NJ, Corzine is pro-actively campaigning on marriage equality

  • Steve_in_CNJ · 5 months ago
thanks for the post, joe. corzine is actually a good guy despite being a politician. and when was the last time you heard a democrat speak with honest passion about anything? anything at all?
  • Scott · 5 months ago
As somebody who lives in NJ, this is terrible news. Corzine doesn't have a prayer of winning, given his unpopularity in this state; and his support for gay marriage could do significant damage to the issue, since conservatives could take his loss as a sign that those polls saying New Jerseyans support gay marriage aren't really true.

NJ voters are notorious for making it seem like they are going to vote for atilla the hun. menendez was trailing in the polls against kean until the last 2 weeks. then lautenberg was looking weak against zimmer. alas, poor NJ republicans.

kean and zimmer are moderates. christie is not. christie is vulnerable for his reaction to the stimulus, not to mention social and immigration issues. corzine has not yet begun his ad campaign. christie has been spending heavily for months.

but yeah it would be a major blow if corzine lost. he is unpopular because of recession and property taxes, not social issues.

Put me down as #2 who disagree with you Scott. We are now almost back to getting the homeowner rebates again this year and with Corzine shining a big light on Christie's right wing tendencies I think he'll be fine this election. Even though NJer's are maybe somewhat fiscally conservative I think, in the end, we are more inclined to vote for cultural liberals.

    I disagree, Scott.

This week, the Corzine administration "found" 400 million dollars in a tax amnesty program that has reinstated homeowner rebates, hammered out a deal with a mortgage conglomerate, which will help people restructure their loans and now has taken a strong stand of civil rights.

    Things are looking up.

If he's such a believer, why hasn't it already happened?
  • monie · 5 months ago
The state tried "civil" unions, which everyone promptly ignored. So, Corzine is taking the next step.
  • pender · 5 months ago
He's been talking about the next step for a long time now. He had a commission and everything. Really old news. Why hasn't there been any action in the state legislature?

Didn't you read the post? they're voting on it in November.

We have a guy running for governor here in CA named Newsom that seems to be fairly proactive on gay issues.
  • terrya · 5 months ago
Goodness, a Democratic politician showing some leadership on marriage equality. How novel and unique.

That's nice but who are Jon and Kate?

"Now, we need to see Biden clapping behind Obama when he finally endorses marriage equality."

No, what we really need is to see Biden speaking telling Obama to ignore Rahm and undo the damage he has done to our community.

Makes me really regret Biden didn't win the nomination...

How and where can we create a grassroots effort to steer our gay dollars to these campaigns? Instead of just blindly giving to any "D" that shows up on a ballot, why can't we have a national list of pols that don't just tentatively support our rights but actively campaign for them like Corzine and (possibly) Newsom? This would send a very clear message to all pols out there that if they want our dollars then they have to actually work for them. I would gladly give donations to these folks even though I don't live in their districts. Joe and John, is this something you could research?

As a business owner just getting involved in the campaign for equality after having left a high paying corporate position, I have followed the campaign and am not so convinced that Corzine is campaigning for equality as he is exercising a political gambit to secure a segment of the liberal vote. I look each day for deliberate media released by the campaign of various mediums and have seen token visibility and coverage unless the community at large forces the issue. I'd like to believe he is sincere, yet I question his sincerity only three years later his religious beliefs no longer prevail and now is moral integrity for equality has gripped his conscience. Or is it he is down percentage points and has resorted to executable directives to gain lost ground. We should hope not, but I am not feeling it as the election draws nearer. Check it out...Google Ring Right Fight or the gaybirds and push the initiative state, country and globally and make a difference too.
