I wonder which will be louder: the cheers or the boos?

Someone mentioned this earlier. They are my team. I e-mailed the front office:
I just learned that Sarah Palin is dropping the puck tonight, 10/11/08. Is this true? Also, will there be an upcoming game in which Senator Biden will drop the puck? I certainly hope so, as I'd hate to see my Flyers involved in national politics.
I may boycott the game, even. I haven't gotten a reply yet.

Yes, she's dropping the puck. I know Philly fans are a rough crowd, hope you boo her good!

Good luck. I heard the owner is a known Republican.

The owner might be a Repug but the fans definitely are not.

Ross - I edited my comment above to reflect that - the fans booed her, and for that we need to give them a great round of applause. Now what they need to do is get rid of the current owner who invited the thug in the first place.

Something that hasn't been discussed much regarding Palin's Troopergate fiasco is the stunning amount of time she and Todd dedicated to pursuing this personal vendetta. I mean, I thought she was busy keeping an eye on Putin, opposing bridges, and running the most mavericky state govt in history?

According to a recent National Enquirer cover page article, this won't be the first time that Caribou Barbie has been pucking around.
Laur
I have my Mom (a lovely woman who raised me to be a Democrat) paying more attention to the National Enquirer these days. At first she was dismayed when I disclosed to her that I give the NE more credit than I used to, since they dogg Republicans as well as Democrats, (am still disappointed about Edwards, but we move on). When I mentioned about the stuff they were running about Palin, however, I notice that Mom brings it up before I do when I visit!
Of course, she still relies on PBS, NPR & the NYT.
*lol* I'm counting on more Palin dysfunction to hit the newsstands soon!

She was soundly booed tonight, to the point where the arena had to keep the music she came out to turned up LOUDLY to mask her 'warm welcome.'
Two things the Flyers did right about this moment. They made sure to announce the contest winner separately before announcing Palin, to avoid her getting caught up in the boos. They also did not acknowledge Palin as she left the ice, instead only focusing on the contest winner.
As Palin stepped out on the ice to the boos, she was very visibly nervous, reaching back for her children before managing a weak smile and wave. Her kids did not look happy to be out there, especially the youngest one. Palin could be seen saying "ooh, they're booing .." or something of that sort as she walks out.
All in all, Philadelphia comes through in giving Palin a dose of a frenzied crowd that isn't exactly on her side.
Exactly my take as well. A cheap trick carried out by a cheap politician. I hope they impeach her when she arrives back in AK after getting her ass kicked in the general. I hope the Flyers sell their team to a responsible owner.

That is quite disgraceful using a small child as a human shield. And very calloused about the harm done to the child who despite being young, knows her mommy used her and will remember. Palin is the kind that if she were mugged would hide behind her kids. A momma bear she is not. Shameful!
vkobaya
Palin represents the worst of the Republicans. She doesn't mind sending the children of others to die for her political gain in Alaska but even worse, will use her own for her own gain and to shield herself from boos. We thought Bush and Cheney were disgraceful for protecting their own children shielding them from serving in Iraq, but now we are seeing even worse, those Repugs who don't mind sacrificing their children in a pointless, brutal, criminal war for their own gain, that is those who have sent and are sending their own children to fight. That is not even natural, given the natural behavior enforced by a billion of years of evolution to protect our offspring.
vkobaya
Then again, Repugs and neocons would argue it proves that evolution is wrong and God created the world. Yeah, as if this is the sort of world God would create; maybe a god with horns, tail, hooves and dressed in red.

The New York Rangers player who took the ceremonial face off, Scott Gomez, is an Alaskan citizen, and the only Alaskan in the NHL, I think.
Lyrebird
Hmm, interesting -- before seeing your comment I was struck by how, for all that the two face-off players were totally gracious, they acted at least as eager to shake the MC-guy's hand as Palin's.
Extra-interesting, given that she's his (Gomez') Governor. Maybe the (per Wikipedia) first Latino NHL player is not a big fan of politicians who base their campaign on "that guy is Not Like Us and You Should Be Worried"! Dunno.
Hooray for Philly! GoBama!

Ben Smith reporting it too
The Times hockey blog says the boos were "resounding." The Wilmington paper says it was an "avalanche."
The biggest problem: when Palin came out onto the Wachovia Center ice Saturday night — greeted by resounding (almost deafening) boos from the Flyers crowd — the two hockey players who had no choice but to appear with her in that photo op were turned into props in a political campaign............
I just went to a look at Brush run Park where Palin will be Sunday afternoon. I have a feeling there will be some good video taken tomorrow. Let's just just...monkey man would look right in place at the Brush Run Park

The weirdest part of it was that Palin, who had to know she was going to be booed, walked out with her cutie pie 7-year-old daughter, Piper.
No, the weirdest part of it was that Palin walked out with her daughters Piper and WILLOW, and neither the announcer nor the on ice officials / players acknowledged her at all. During the hand shakes Willow tried to get her handshake in and was ignored by all.
And Palin knowing she'd be booed shouldn't have taken any of her kids out with her..

It was too noisy to tell. Another photo op without any substance.

This was a set up by the McCain campaign. They wanted some film of disrespectful Obama supporters to counter the bad rap their crowds of have been getting of late.

You know, for Flyers fans, they were pretty damn polite to Sarah. They're usually the most obnoxious fans on the planet. And that's saying a lot, given the nature of Eagles fans. The Flyers fans are tougher than the players. And for the record, I grew up a Flyers fan.
TootsMcGee
Well, growing up a Flyers fan, you know the cameras and microphones weren't picking up what was being said in the rafter seats ;)
fostert

Well, they know well enough not to put microphones up there. You can just replace the feed with a constant bleep and it would be the same anyway.
TootsMcGee

While I get the sarcasm, the one thing about this event is it wasn't billed as political at all. She was the 'world's most famous hockey mom' not the GOP VP candidate.
But Philadelphia fans, despite what some may call an 'unbecoming' reputation, are a smart bunch. They know their sports, and they know when politicians (and shameless sports franchise owners) are trying to take advantage of them.
fostert

"unbecoming": that's gracious. But you're right, they are smart and know their sports.
katjam

FOX will play this for all its worth about those nasty Northerner who would boo an innocent 7-year-old.
Milli
Don't you know? Obama personally met with everyone in the crowd before the game. He got William Ayers to pay them $1000 to boo her. Then he gave them some flags to burn, and for good measure, gave a doll of Osama Bin Ladin which said "Death to America" to every child in the audience. You are exactly right. This was yet another set-up to stoke the right-wing fire next week. They knew the booing was going to happen. Actually its quite sickening that she used her own child as a human shield. I'm surprised she didn't roll the baby out on a sled. From what we've seen so far, she's a horrible mother.
katjam
I think all her children are going to be adversely affected by hearing their mother not only being booed but inciting mob reactions at her rallies. And who the heck is talking care of her special needs baby? The expectant mom with her high school dropout boyfriend? I would think the baby needs lots of one-on-one attention at this stage not being dragged ON stage. And what about schooling for the older siblings? And think what it will be like for them to go back to school having had their mom be the butt of SNL jokes? Therapy all around.
BarrieT
Human shield is right. Jehovah's Witnesses pull the same stunt. They actually gave me a copy of Awake! which actually contained this advice for going door to door:
People might be aggressive, so take your children with you and stand behind them. If you don't have any children, offer to look after someone else's!
These god-botherers clearly have no faith at all.

"
Most of these NHL players have been involved in many international tournaments and/or the Olympics, and have met more Russian citizens (and Czechs, Swiss, Swedes, Frenchmen, Germans, Austrians, Italians, etc.) than Palin ever hopes to.

She's being paid off to be a jerk. I bet her account in the Grand Caymans branch of RBS grows exponentially with each of these pre-planned fiascos. The Republicans know they're loosing so they put the trailer trash out to stir up the mob. She's good at it.
houstonray

The media already shows it as "GOP VP candidate met mostly with cheers during ceremonial honor" and that there were a few boos when she first walked out but that quickly changed to cheers and applause (according to one article).
Puhleeze...
TootsMcGee
If you watched the live telecast, the ceremony was sandwiched by the Flyers players introduction and the National Anthem. The cheering for both puts in to perspecting the jeering that Palin endured. It simply doesn't come across on the YouTube vids. You need the full perspective of the cheering that was going on not moments earlier and after Palin's appearance. There's simply no arguing the fact she was dismissed by the Philadelphia crowd.

Did you clarify how many BHO's spinners were among these booers? It is understandable why it is being done by BHO's campaign - he wants people to forget his not very smart remark he made in CA a couple mo's ago - about bitter Middle America and guns - rings a bell? Also, a frendly reminder: 4 years ago Kerry John Kerry was leading Bush by 17 points in Pennsylvania till the day of the election. Finally ended carrying the state by 2 points. The margin was 142,000 votes out of which he got 400,000 in Philadelphia county. Which means he lost the rest of the state by 260,000 when he was shown leading 17 points all over. BO leads McCain today by 13.8
