AMERICAblog: Increasingly erratic McCain campaign suspending its operation in Michigan

On the downside: even more vicious, racist, Muslim-baiting ads in PA, OH, FL, and VA.

This is like the German retreat from the Battle of the Buldge. Back up and shoot spit wads as you go.

The Battle of Bulge was more like the Germans running out of gas, being ripped apart from the air, and pinching Allied trucks and fuel to scamper back to the Fatherland, with what little reserves they had left. They spent their reserves that they needed to hold the Rhine.

My guess that Pennsylvania is the next state for the McCain campaign to withdraw.
They will probably do some sort of firewall that Kerry tried to do with everything in Ohio and Florida.
If I was the McCain campaign, I would put more resources in Florida than in Ohio, and get the NRA and social conservatives to run a bunch of ads.
Another State they should try hard, especially with social conservatives: Virginia
However, even if Obama doesn't win Florida, they can cause McCain's campaign to sweat bullets in Florida. McCain can't win without Ohio and Florida. Make the McCain campaign go through what the GHW Bush campaign went through with Florida in 1992, when they saw a safe state go into contention. (I know that Florida is a battleground this year)

Also, why the hell was he campaigning in California and Iowa earlier in the week? Not that I'm complaining but it just didn't make sense.
judybrowni
The middle of California -- way north of L.A. and sufficiently south of San Fran is farm country, red neck, white trash and all that implies, including stupidly voting against their own interests.
South of L.A. is Orange County replete with millionaires and older money, who vote for their own interests by voting Republican.
McCain was probably here to suck up rich people's money in Orange and those disaffected Hollywood Republicans.

You're right about huge swaths of California being repug country, but the cities generally aren't. He's behind by double digits here so he really doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell. Ultimately it's all about electoral votes not the popular vote.

As a Michigander, I welcome this news. It means fewer attacks of apoplexy and the calling out of "lies! lies! all lies!" whenever I see his damn commercials.

I hope that Obama has as many people watching the voting booths, as there are knocking on doors, polling, etc. Either the Repugs are beginning to think that they'll let Obama try to clear up their disgusting mess for the next four years (and then of course get elected promising to 'save' the nation), OR the Repugs are 'relaxed' about polling because they know Diebold is doing what it's supposed to do: save the Repugs from the nasty 'socialist' Democrats.
I want to be positive, I really do, but we've all watched two elections stolen - and I just hope there's enough people who aren't distracted by the economy. Caribou Barbie, OJ Simpson, and god knows what else who will keep watch in these next few weeks.

The Obama camp is making it harder and harder for Rove to steal this election.
moreleesafer
right. they are fighting back on the voter caging and getting enough of a lead in the battleground states to exceed the error of margin. that helps because if the polling says 51-49 with a margin of error of + or - 4, you can play around with the results to get the one you want. however, that is going to look really freakin' obvious if Obama has a 60-42 result but McCain somehow magically wins.

Everyone check this out!!! McCains crying like a little bitch. Obama's pissing in McCain's Cheerios!!! HAHAHAHAHA
McCain is wasting his money with his lying ads here.
And I've switched the channel on them for a couple weeks, at least.
One just a couple days ago.
Really, John? Really -- fucking Los Angeles?
Oh wait, no, it's totally, totally cool to blow your money in L.A., there are all sorts of fools here, who are Scientologists and what not, and will swallow any bunk.
Although they tend to be outnumbered by voters who read.
Ah maybe those ads are a sop to the Hollywood Republicans whining about discrimination against their stupidity, so they don't feel so damn lonely.
Look! Media! For you lonely bastards!

This on top of the medical comments just posted - we need some non-partison group to demand his medical records be released. He is under insane stress. I'm sure he's pushing himself on ego and adrenaline.
Even though it looks like he's going down in flames, he is still in the race and his behavior, age and medical history are as relevant as anything else.
I thought they gave him something for the first debate, speed or something. Maybe Monofidal, something to make him sharp and alert. I thought that at one of Bush's debates too. He had gone from incomprehensible to suddenly showing up for the debate alert and intelligent sounding - sort of.
Cindy probably could have scored something for him, although she likes downers better.
This is actually scary because he's leaving the state to RNC ads -- those horrible, lying, dark attacks against "issues." He doesn't have to "approve" the RNC ads. I don't know enough about campaign law to know what limits RNC and the PACs have (if any). I know that there isn't supposed to be "coordination."
This sounds like McCain has burned through a whole lot of cash already. Bad financial planning in a campaign == bad financial governing as president.

I got a mailing from the RNC yesterday - it was a fancy photograph of McCain & Palin and an opportunity to send a donation. I was surprised to get it, since I'm not only a long-time registered Democrat, but I live in San Francisco too boot. I would think they'd have saved their money! Maybe they think my neighborhood - mostly working-class Asian, Hispanic and Philippine - would be a likely reservoir for Republican votes?
Anyway, I mailed it back empty. I figured they'd appreciate the chance to pay for the postage and for someone to open an empty envelope.

I remember one GOP candidate in Illinois last time did incredibly expensive mailed packages to (as far as I know) the entire town with official government-looking design, flags, etc. and the label, "This is your immigrant voter information kit". Inside was hate stuff, stickers, anti-illegal alien spewing, etc. When I was canvassing, a Democratic voter gave me the kit and urged me to tell everyone, and tell the party.
It was RNC funded, not candidate funded, so it didn't come out of their coffers.

I don't think Ohio will be a good bet for Johnny... In what was solid red Bush country four and 8 years and solid Romney in the primary fund raising, south central and eastern Ohio won't be a sure Republican bet for the flailing Arizona Senator. McCain spots have run heavily in the Cincinnati media market the last several weeks but, starting this past Sunday, Obama's light rotation has turned very heavy and very focused on jobs and the economy as Mccain's seemingly vanished. McCain's spots have been so negative in tone to this point I really wonder if an intensification of the same will accomplish anything but harming the old geezer and his hand puppet running mate...Screaming over abortion might be Johnny's only remaining card.

Wait, what am I saying? You got Palin! And I'm sure she's gonna turn it all around tonight. And hey, I'm sure Alaska's gonna be....some kind of percent behind you some of the rest of the way!

"...however, the RNC (the Republican Party headquarters in Washington, DC) has raised a boat load to complement McCain's efforts...."
Not if they continue to run ads that contradict their candidate's positions, รก la the spot this week criticizing the bailout bill for which John McCain had just taken credit. OOPS.

In the beginning, there was word that South Carolina may be in play. I don't hear anything about that anymore in the MSM or even on the blogs but let me tell you, South Carolina Democrats are highly motivated and insiders here are saying that the state may be in Obama's reach. It wouldn't take much. Two more rallies and some TV time. This state has been democrat before and it can certainly be again. Especially with all of the mills and plants that have closed during Bush/Cheney. The reds courted those two heavily (though passing quickly through the beat up parts of town straight to the Country Club neighborhoods) but nobody seems to be inviting McCain to any $1,000 per plate dinners. Maybe it's that "old person smell".

This is what happen when you have to defend more states than you through you would have to defend... Obama's 50 state offensive is staring to pay off in a big way!
When the republican give up on a state it means the republicans are fearing a defeat and are looking for an excuse... a pul out is an excuse all through a week one.

Gee... does that mean that Texas is now in play?
Most likely not... Bush and company will spend the parties last dime to keep Texas red, after all what better place to rebuild the fascist movement then in Texas... home of the right wing, christian nut cases!
But what the hell, us more educated Texans can hope for a better blue future... someday soon!

My boss and I were just talking about how exciting it will be in DC come the inauguration of Obama. We decided no matter what we will be there. I've gone to the gay marches on Washington (last onein '92) and was telling him how wonderful and exciting the whole atmosphere in the city was. Think of how it will be in January. Something you'll remeber till you're 80.

Drinking game for tonight's debate!!! I am so not looking forward to tomorrow's hangover :(
scurl: the mailing you received is a Republican tactic called "cadging" or "caging" they send mail to registered Democrats. If the mail is returned the name and address on a list. Then they challenge that voter's right to vote. It would show up on the polling place register as "Challenged" The voter then has two days to prove to election official they have the right to vote.
Here in Florida the mailing was "unconfirmed Republican" voting status. Google it. I am reading a book by a former Republican whose job was to do all this stuff. "how to rig an election" by Allen Raymond ISBN 978 1 4165 5222 2
