AMERICAblog: Insured but still bankrupt

  • 2patricius2 · 4 months ago
Back in 1959 my mother had cancer surgery. She had breast cancer and a radical mastectomy. The doctor also removed lymph nodes in the process. The insurance that she had at that time decided to cancel and not pay the expenses for the surgery because she had cancer. Her doctor wrote to the insurance company threatening to take them to the state insurance board. They relented and paid. Fortunately she recovered and lived another 27 years.

Insurance companies have been playing this game for years. I am not sure that threats to report denials of payment to state insurance boards would have any effect now.

Why am I not seeing public hearings on TV with people telling these stories? Some member on congress or somebody in the Whitehouse should be able to arrange non-stop hearings and just invite these people to tell their stories until 100% of the American public is screaming for a public option. Wouldn't take but a week.

    [With apologies to Charles Dickens]:

"Are there no emergency rooms?' asked the Health Insurance companies?

'Are the bankruptcy courts still in operation?' demanded the Health Insurance Companies.

'The cemeteries and Cremation industry are in full vigour, then?' said the Health Insurance Companies?

'All very busy, sir.' said the people.

'Oh! We were afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course,' said the Health Insurance Companies. 'We’re very glad to hear it.'

'Under the impression that they scarcely furnish Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude,' returned the people, 'a few of us are endeavouring to create a health care plan for all the people. We choose this time, because it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt. What shall we put you down for?' asked the people.

'Nothing!' the Health Insurance Companies replied. ‘We help to support the establishments we have mentioned - they cost enough; and those who are badly off must go there. They had better do it, and decrease the surplus population. Good afternoon!’"

Fox news is promoting their tea parties again, but this time there's a counter protest: The Million Can March. While you're shopping for your holiday picnic, please pick up an extra bag or two of groceries and take them to your local pantry. Then blog about it and send me the link or just let me know how many cans you donated here: http://unrulymob.blogspot.com/2009/06/your-cans...

    Silly hats optional :) Thanks!

At least big oil has the decency to screw us over in aggregate for the most part, instead of waiting for people to get into the worst situation of their lives and then surprising them. "surprise! we're going to let you choose between poverty for your family and death!"

Worry about insurance?! Their big worry is if their affair or crooked deal will be exposed.

Joe Scarborough was back on the "if everyone has insurance there won't be enough doctors and clinics" scare tactic this morning. Wow. Just wow.
