    FRONTLINE presents BUSH'S WAR March 24 & 25, 2008, at 9 P.M. ET on PBS

I don't think anybody could have predicted that tribal groups, religious sects and traditional political enemies would engage in Civil War.

Mission Accomplished, Bring'em on, We're winning absolutely, We're make'n progress, We're kick'n ass, The next 3 to 6 months are critical.

There are times when I believe that George W Bush is chiefly a liar.

There are times when I believe that George W Bush is chiefly a bullshitter.

There are times when I believe that George W Bush is chiefly an ignoramus.

There are times when I believe that George W Bush is chiefly a pathetic dupe.

There are times when I believe that George W Bush is chiefly a psychiatric patient.

Today, I believe that he is all of the above; and more.

Tax cuts for the super rich are the only answer to our troubles in Iraq. Yes.

But of course! Tax cuts for the super rich is the answer to everything!

the "surge" (escalation) - as big a failure as its commander in chief.

i marvel over how it easy it was for bush/cheney to make this county unrecognizable.
  • SarainKC · 1 year ago
Call me a conspiracy theorist but it strikes me as no coincidence that Cheney shows up and the cease fire ends. With chaos in Iraq and opportunities for McWar to continue misspeaking about Iran's involvement, this helps McWar, does it not?
  • Nigel Elliott · 1 year ago
Not really. McCain is already out there lowering expectations, claiming the "Al Qaeda" may try to swing the election by escalating the violence around the general election. It plays into his narrative that Osama wants Obama for president.

And McCrazy wants 100 more years of THIS? I can't bare 100 seconds more of this illegal war based on lies. End it, already!!!!
  • scooter in brooklyn · 1 year ago
i've been known to see a conspiracy here and there - but i simply can't see how this helps mcshame.

Ssshhhhh! If we don't talk about it, then it's not really happening. Please keep the volume down so CNN and the others aren't forced to start talking about this before it can be adequetly scripted. Give McCain an opportunity to figure out how to spin this as absolute proof-positive that not only is the surge working beyond all expectations but that the insugency is in its last throes, a new day is dawning, our policies are winning herats and minds, America is number 1, the Democrats are traitors, God is great and tooth decay in Iraq is down 16%

    OT... slightly anyway...

In America's continuing tradition of trying to start a war with EVERY Arabic and/or Middle Eastern country... we turn your attention to the Suez Canal:

America is number 1, the Democrats are traitors, God is great and tooth decay in Iraq is down 16%
    ---
Ed, if the population in Iraq is down more than 16%, does that mean tooth decay is actually going up??
  • EdNSted · 1 year ago
    Soundboy said:

"Ed, if the population in Iraq is down more than 16%, does that mean tooth decay is actually going up?"

What bothers me is the "heads I win tails you lose" nature of this. If violence goes down, it's proof the surge is working and we have to stay in Iraq. If violence goes back up, it's proof we have to stay in Iraq. If violence stays the same, it's a tough slog but we must persist.

Is anyone else detecting a pattern to these arguments?
  • OlderAndWiser · 1 year ago
EdnSted, you're so correct. BushCo will have its way regardless. And Cheney sealed the deal to stay in Iraq during his visit.

Watch oil go to $150/bbl in no time. Will they be happy when the entire US is on some kind of welfare (esp. Wall St.).

From the CS Monitor story: "...the start of the offensive dubbed "The Knights' Assault."

Great. They had to name it something reminiscent of the Crusades??? Way to get the other guys fired up...

Congratulations for figuring out where John McCain is and for finding the time to review his public statements. Was it only earlier today you were wondering where he had been keeping himself?
  • scooter in brooklyn · 1 year ago
    pattern?

it's just like tax cuts. economy is good, proof we need tax cuts. economy is bad, more proof we need tax cuts.

it's stunning that anyone still believes them.

Sort of...lets see...Cheney and McCain visit Iraq. Whole scale civil war breaks out with us in the middle...

When things seem to quiet down...send in the clowns.

Ah yes....who would have ever guessed the shit would hit the fan AGAIN.

Lets send in Hitlery....shes seen action before.
  • Mike_G · 1 year ago
But the Corporate Press have their orders:

    The Surge is Working.
McCain is a Foreign Policy Expert.

Therefore none of this is happening. You don't expect them to actually change a lazy meme in response to events, do you? That would disrupt the corporate heirarchy, and wouldn't be profitable.

This same man, when interviewed in January, had stated that he was abiding by the cease-fire and that he was keeping busy running his cellular phone store.
It's good to have something to do when business slacks off. I can't help but wonder whether "this same man" is primarily a warrior or primarily a salesman. It sounds like a local form of the national guard. That's good, I guess, because it suggests that local business people are taking a proactive interest in their community. The US military is definitely in the way, needs to leave, and needs to consolidate its energy for the Big One. This round wasn't it.

There is a good article in Rolling Stone #1047 "Report from Iraq: Why the Surge is Failing". This was written in December. Basically we've been arming and paying both sides. Also points up the failure of the troops to understand Arabic is impeding success, since we can't tell the Sunnis from the Shia.

"If we're lucky, McCain will only start wars with North Korea and Iran. If we're unlucky, we may need to add China or (more likely) Russia to that list."

Oh, and by the way, does anyone remember that the July date for withdrawing the "surge" troops has been moved forward?

This was announced AFTER Cheney's visit as well. That son of a bitch knows exactly what he's doing. Somebody please turn on the microwave...

In another unfortunate case of premature Iraq elation, the Wall Street Journal last week celebrated the decline and fall of Iraqi Shiite leader Moqtada Al-Sadr. Echoing the "bring 'em on" taunt of their former boss, ex-Bush advisers Dan Senor and Roman Martinez triumphantly asked "Whatever Happened to Moqtada?" But as the renewed turmoil in Baghdad and violent chaos in Basra suggest, the answer may be, "he's back."

    For the details, see:
"Moqtada Al-Sadr Answers the Wall Street Journal."

Maybe he can tell us whats going on.

The Times concludes that "it now appears likely that any decision on major reductions in American troops from Iraq will be left to the next president." A state of affairs that should surprise no one, as the administration has ably kicked the can down the road with promises of dramatic improvement just six months away.

We want to know...why is the Mahdi army being utilized now...shortly after Cheney's visit?

Darth Vader accomplished every task he went over to do...that's the problem. Iraqis know it's going to be a cold day in hell before US forces leave them alone to deal with their own country.

Im ambivilent about the new comment system. I wish I could make the font larger when typing in my comments. It is too hard to catch errors when the print is soo small. But I do like the greater control over the trolls. It keeps the air fresher in here.

As to the entry at hand, I am not surprised that a new stage in the Iraqi Civil War is opening. I expect other Shia groups to join in, and for the Sunni to respond. What's worse for us, is that the south of Iraq is now effectively run by Iran. So we have to either fight our way out by going south into Kuwait, flee into Turkey and accept their protection, or airlift hundreds of thousands of Americans right out of Baghdad.

What a mess Bush and McSame have gotten us into.
  • mike31c · 1 year ago
I am wondering when the cease-fire started in the first place? I mean besides from the ignorant words spewing out from the mouths of the monkey king Bush and his ASSociates making claims the war was over, and claims it's getting better, and then repeated like lemmings from the likes of Faux news...

The Brits were smart enough to see the writing on the wall in Basra and got the fuckouttadodge; Basra: the NEW Fallujah! If Americans go in on the ground, there will be massive American casualties.
