AMERICAblog: Is Caroline Kennedy trying to outlaw sex while her unwed daughter gets knocked up too?

  • RobertSanDimas · 11 months ago
I enjoyed your last line, John: "But Sarah Palin needs to learn one simply fact: She's no Caroline Kennedy." Some of us are old enough to remember this episode vividly and with glee: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-7gpgXNWYI
  • anastasjoy · 11 months ago
Also. Palin is wrong when she says liberals have given Caroline a free pass. In fact, her potential appointment has been hotly debated. Also. Sarah herself was treated very very gently by the media for the most part which glossed over her potential income tax violations, her cheating of the state on her per diems and claims of 'government business" expenses for her kids and spun Troopergate as no big deal. It wasn't until the shopping spree that the media dug in because that was kind of a fun thing that's easy to understand. And Sarah had at least four different explanations as i recall for what the deal was with the clothes and what happened to them - probably more. And remember how she said she couldn't get behind Hillary because she thought Hillary played the whiny victim? Sarah, look in the mirror!

The RNC used Palin like a two dollar hooker. Her job was to threw red meat to the frothing at the mouth social conservatives in the form of lies about Obama being in league with terrorists and being a Muslim; now she thinks MSM was being mean to HER?
Palin, the "real" conservatives think you're trash, but will continue to use your sorry ass to keep the social conservatives happy. The sooner you understand your place in the party, the sooner you'll come to grips with your persecution complex.

I find it kind of interesting to compare Palin and Bush. Like Palin, Bush lacks class. But Bush made a "virtue" out of being "folksy", while Palin is showing her resentment of people who have class.

Rich investors are spurning gold exchange traded funds in favour of krugerrands.
Gary Dugan, the chief investment officer for the US bank, said there has been a remarkable change in sentiment. "People are genuinely worried about what the world is going to look like in 2009. It is amazing how many clients want physical gold, not ETFs," he said, referring to exchange trade funds listed in London, New York, and other bourses. "They are so worried they want a portable asset in their house. I never thought I would be getting calls from clients saying they want a box of krugerrands," he said. Merrill predicted that gold would soon blast through its all time-high of $1,030 an ounce, and would hit $1,150 by June.

My first impression - John really knows how to string a paragraph together.
  • larry · 11 months ago
Gov Palin is correct that a class bias does exist. Those with class are appreciated and even admired like Ms Kennedy. Those without class is a fail Republican Vice Presidential candidate from the 49th State. Simple really.
  • Janet · 11 months ago
When Caroline Kennedy fakes a pregnancy to cover up her husband and daughter's incestuous relationship - then Sarah Palin can bitch about the media.
  • Nylund · 11 months ago
I think the main difference is one was on a Presidential ticket for a national election for the White House that the entire country could vote on. The other is not facing an election at all, and no one will even be voting, and even if there was an election, it would only involve one state, not to mention there is no other "ticket" to compare/contrast her to.

But ask a random person who will be replacing Joe Biden? How about Rahm? There are a lot of members of Congress moving to the Executive Branch, and if you ask me, Caroline Kennedy has been "put under the microscope" more than every other possible appointee combined, except for the Burris drama of course.

So the question shouldn't be why isn't the Media scrutinizing her more, its why are they scrutinizing her so much more than everyone else in a similar position?
  • Happy_Housewife · 11 months ago
I often think about the difference between the Bushes and Kennedys: Both started their contemporary history as the heirs of bastards - Joe Kennedy and Prescott Bush. Yet, the Kennedys have evolved, while the Bushes have stayed the same, or (arguably) gotten worse.

Think about it. The Kennedys, for all their numerous flaws and highly publicized scandals, do good things. When was the last time you heard about a Bush doing anything that wouldn't directly help their family fortunes?

Sarah Palin is too stupid - or too removed from American life - to realize that Caroline Kennedy is an intelligent woman, with a history of charitable work. Yes, she was "born to it", but unlike any of the Bush women, she actually did things.

Sarah was born lower to middle class - like me - yet she apparently doesn't even have an instinct to do charitable works, or even be empathetic to people who are suffering. Don't forget her callous disregard of Joe Biden when he momentarily choked up when remembering the accident that took the life of his wife and daughter, and nearly took his two sons.

She would, of course, point to her deep faith, but faith without works is empty. The Kennedys know that. The Bushes and Palins? Not so much.

"...When was the last time you heard about a Bush doing anything that wouldn't directly help their family fortunes?..."
    --------------------------------------
I recall Babs 'Momma" Bush with the computer give-away to the poor folks displaced by Katrina in Texas only if they buy Neil's school software program to go with it. The woman was always looking for a way to turn lemons into lemonade using the misfortune of the Katrina victims to make a fast buck for her family and scam them. They have no shame.
  • Bob Wheeler · 11 months ago
I believe you are being unfair to the Bushes. For example...
    1) George HW Bush volunteered with William JB Clinton in raising money for tsunami victimes (and others)
    2) Thousand Points of Light
I believe that George W Bush may likely do much charity work in the future during his retirement.

    who is caroline kennedy?
  • ZachPruckowski · 11 months ago
There is controversy about who's replacing Biden. Specifically, charges that Biden got his Gov. to appoint a seat filler so his son (the state Comptroller and currently in Iraq) can run in 2010. It's under the surface now (because it hasn't happened yet), but it'll be an issue in a year or 18 months. The choice to replace Salazar is a deliberately non-controversial moderate who's popular in Colorado. I'm sure someone could pick a geographic or demographic fight there, but nothing juicy.

And Rahm's seat is filled by special election. I recall that the dates for the primary and general special election in his district have already been set (and it's soon-ish).
  • jixter · 11 months ago
Here's the thing that annoys me about Sarah and the thing that also annoys me about the MSM; the very first thing she did when she stepped upon the world (ok, USA) stage was to LIE to the American people about "the bridge to nowhere": "I told them 'thanks, but no thanks' " - remember that? She kept on repeating that lie and was eventually called out on it by some of the press. So, what did she do then? Did she admit her mistake and apologize? No, she kept on lying. And lying. And lying. Eventually, she stopped, but, in my opinion, the permanent damage had been done to her credibility. It's my opinion that she lost the election then and there. Most of America, knowing they'd been lied to - and now also understanding that they'd been lied to for 8 years by George Bush - began pulling away from her then, but whenever her campaign arc is talked about on TV, that crucial episode is never mentioned. Why not? That's what killed her. Every other thing she bollixed up for the rest of the campaign was merely corroborating evidence of her unsuitability and disqualification for the job. Her lie about 'the bridge to nowhere', however, was her fatal, self-inflicted wound.
  • lilybart · 11 months ago
the good news is, when she tries to run again in 2012, the newness will have worn off, along with the moose-killing, gun-toting thing and she can't really repeat all the lies she told the last time. She will need some new acomplishments. And while we know she will lie about anything, if you read the Alaska blogs she is in for a rough time and may not have much new material.

Her schtick is old now, except with the fundie true believers, so the next run she might actually have to show competence.

The last line of your post is laugh-out-loud funny!
  • coach215 · 11 months ago
I knew Caroline Kennedy. She was a childhood crush of mine. she had a pony. I remember when they murdered her father when we were six years old. Sarah Palin, you're no Caroline Kenndy.
  • lost_nacf_gop · 11 months ago
Yeah, the end of this post had me thinking of Lloyd Bentsen and little Danny Quayle for some reason too . . .
  • RainbowPhoenix · 11 months ago
I think that was the point.
  • Joel · 11 months ago
When Caroline Kennedy says that she can see China from her yacht, then we'll start making comparisons.

Just FYI, the real Sara Palin quote is, "They're our next door neighbors and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska."

Really, you and your readers, pretty much have made Sara Palin's point.
  • lost_nacf_gop · 11 months ago
Oh really? That makes the quote more redeemable in what way, since it was still being used to tout her Foreign policy gravitas, wasn't it? While you're at it, tell your favorite vice presidential candidate that Couric didn't ask her "what exactly do you read WAY UP THERE in Alaska" as she's been repeating around to anyone who would listen since that epic interview faux pas. Palin may not be stupid, but she is by no means sharp, and her interviews flubs make it clear she does not think on her feet well at all.
  • Indigo · 11 months ago
Poor Sarah. She could have been a pleasant person to hear from. Folksy wisdom has its place. She's not it.
  • woodroad34 · 11 months ago
Wisdom comes from experience, introspection, and humility. That "thing" -- I have no other adjectives for her-- from Alaska has none of those qualities. In fact, from what I've been exposed to by her own words and actions alone (now that she's not under the control of 'handlers") is that she's quite the opposite.
  • lilybart · 11 months ago
Bill Clinton came from the mother of an alcoholic, greww up in a trailer in Arkansas. He went on to be a Rhodes scholar with no help from family or wealthy friends. So, class is not how people are judged in America.

She just doens't have the chops.
  • beware of the leopard · 11 months ago
Bullshit. People are judged by class in our country all the time. Some guy or gal from the working classes (of which I am proudly a part) are perceived differently at stores, restaurants, and hotels, and at work. I knew people in some of my workplaces who read astronomy magazines, Scientific American, Smithsonian, Utne Reader, etc., and yet the assumption by those who work in offices and other such "clean" workplaces is that we are all a bunch of uneducated clods. A formal education does not guarantee anyone intelligence or common sense, and yet the educated classes think otherwise. Just look at the state of bidness in America and around the world and tell me how many of these benighted, venal idiots attended the best "schools" on the planet. Now, I'm not trying to say that my word should go over a qualified engineer or architect, but sometimes, it might be a good idea to NOT pay attention to those who wave their degree and "experience" in our faces and tell us to go and wait patiently in the corner while the Very Important and WIse People in Washington and on WallStreet attend to the problems our nation faces. As for Mrs. Palin, everyone here and around the nation should fear, or at the very least, be wary of, her and anyone connected to her. She's not stupid, and is a very cunning and wily demogogue who has had a taste of the national stage. She's not going away, not if she can help it.
  • William Jensen · 11 months ago
The difference between the two isn't class, it's intelligence. One is an intellectual and the other is a dope. Intelligence and class are different things, which Palin does not understand.

She's the gift that keeps on giving. God, I pray she is the Republicans candidate in 2012. Just think of the lies and the mistakes she made in the last ninety days with limited media coverage. What damage she would to to her and to the Republican Party in a long term campaign is incomprehensible.
  • GrMtGirl3 · 11 months ago
I think the basic comparison between these two is intelligence . . . a pretty much needed qualification for the job description. However, judging the election system as a whole, it is my opinion that more and more, one buys their seat. Good, well qualified individuals cannot run for offices because they do not have financial packing. Creating a ruling that each candidate is allowed only "X" dollars to run their campaign would help correct this noted flaw.
  • baja · 11 months ago
I live in Wasilla and can not stand our governor, but I think an appointment of Caroline Kennedy would be a mistake. I think it sends the wrong message about what our democracy should be about. With Ted Kennedy on the way out, the appointment just reeks of nepotism and exculsivity. From what I read, she doesn't vote regularly, has never held a public service position, and wasn't all that excited about the opportunity when it was first presented? She seems like a great lady who has done a lot of humanitarian work, but I would rather see some one be placed as senator who has earned the position rather than receive it through family legacy.
  • Big Time Patriot · 11 months ago
Most of this I agree with, however it wouldn't surprise me if Caroline Kennedy had 150,000 dollars of clothes already in her closet, and has a little less incentive to take iclothes when people give it to her. There is no denying that the Kennedy family in general (and I don't know how the wealth is distibuted in the family) a much wealthier family than the Palin family, and at least Palin tried to have voters "elect" her instead of asking someone to appoint her.

Bottom line, Palin is a total loser from middle class background with a losing conservative ideology, Kennedy is someone of little accomplishment from the same type of famous wealthy family, ivy league background that produced George Bush, but has a better ideology.

Neither has impressed me so far.

  • woodroad34 · 11 months ago
Sarah Palin, the whiny, low-class princess whose hubris overwhelms any sense of responsibility compares herself to Caroline Kennedy, who says "I have to work twice as hard"? Miss Payless has no class on every level while Caroline exemplifies it on many levels (yes I went there). Sarah is a pig with lipstick - she wallows in mud and snorts garbage. Wait! was I just talking about Sarah or Ann Coulter? You know, you never see the two of them together, do you?
  • GoBlue · 11 months ago
When Sarah complains that the media pile on her and not on Caroline Kennedy because of "class" differences, she's admitting that she has no class. But then, we knew that months ago.
  • JC · 11 months ago
Of course it's about class, Sarah. Caroline Kennedy has it and you don't.
  • Gef · 11 months ago
You're right, she's no Caroline Kennedy. Palin actually worked to get where she is and didn't have it handed to her on a family name silver platter. But keep perpetuating your lies. It will make it all the sweeter when Palin is President.
  • MARTinNORFOLK · 11 months ago
Leave Sarah Palin alone. Just give her more rope. She will hang herself and that no-excuse-for-a-criminal organization (also known as) the Repug Party (the White Peoples Party).
