AMERICAblog: Is Obama giving federal agencies a right they already have?

  • Gridlock · 6 months ago
John, is this verified 100%?? If so, we need to blast this across the MSM as the sham it is. WE NEED TO DROWN OBAMA IN THIS STORY.
  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
agreed! Funny how we Americablog and the blogs keep getting ahead of the curve and scooping the mainstream media on this.
  • SCLiberal · 6 months ago
That's because you don't have corporate masters.

then must be a reason they don't want John A being interviewed....

    hmmmmm
  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
Yep, every time I've seen him interviewed the attorney comes out and he absolutely kicks ass. He doesn't take prisoners. He wouldn't be apologizing for the Obama Administration.

With six states having equal marriage rights, DOMA is unconstitutional in every fashion. It violates "full faith and credence", it violates freedom of religious expression and it violates separation of church and state.

Everyone in the LGBt communities needs to be in Obama's face on this, marriage proponent or not because the battleground got picked and the battle is now raging. You might not have picked this as the first battle but that choice is now gone.

We have the Obama team off message, they hate that, they want it back. We need to make them pay to do so with our civil rights.
  • Bostonian_Queer_in_Dallas · 6 months ago
The only way any of this is going to be resolved is by the SCOTUS. If they refuse to hear the suit coming in on the Prop 8 debacle, we may as well give up. These issues are clear violations of our Constitution. Unfortunately our Supremes may just ignore us. NO civil rights ever really came from any legislator or president
  • TrueBleuCA · 6 months ago
What about the Voting and Civil Rights Acts from Johnson in the 60's?

  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
I'm not giving up. I will go to jail for not paying taxes before I give up on being treated as a second class citizen. The federal government better wake up to the fact the LGBT community has HAD IT when it comes to taxation and then unequal treatment. They want support and tax money? Then, by G-d, they better stop making us sit at the back of the bus.
  • SD_Dave · 6 months ago
Are you referring to the one regarding the recent DoJ Doma brief?

If you are, then I hope the federal court throws the case out. That particular case has so many flaws in it that no court should hear it. BTW, yes I'm gay, yes I found that DoJ brief vile and disgusting, but I hope the court throws that one out anyway.

If you are referring to the suit brought about by Olson then I agree with you. That lawsuit is much more sound.

BUT, I think the most promising case is the Gill case file by GLAAD (which the DoJ has to decide by June 29th whether to defend DOMA or not).
  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
AND this did NOT have to happen. WE gave them PLENTY of warning they needed to start moving for our rights. What did we get? The DOMA brief...

It's very, very difficult for those of us logging in every few hours or so to realize what tonight's announcement is going to look like out there in the rest of the world; Obama's insulting little gesture this afternoon may read like progress to most people.

There have been pleasant surprises in the strength of the reaction so far - the NYTimes editorial, the Dean interview with Maddow - but I have a frustrating feeling that something a little more visible needs to be done. Writing is great (and more effective than I think people realize), turning off the cash is great, trying to shame the morons taking part in this "gay" fundraiser is great, but something else needs to happen on the PR front - something that will threaten the Obama operation's most important asset - Obama's super-cool, not-just-another-politician image. They care just as much about that as they do about the money. What about a campaign, print, or viral video campaign along the lines of What would MLK do?/What would Nelson Mandela do?/ What would Gandhi do? pointing out that Obama up to now has essentially just been playing a visionary leader on tv. And why stick to gay issues? Obama turns out to be a master of the empty gesture in more fields than gay civil rights. Everywhere it's about changing the rhetoric, not changing the policy - "preventive detention," economics, health care - there's a pattern emerging here.

We know he played us - what we have to do now is make them fear that we can find a way to communicate that knowledge to the rest of the country. I think I can speak for a lot of us when I say I'll never be getting a lump in my throat from an Obama speech again - I've built up immunity. If we can find a way to spread that immunity the campaign loses an indispensable asset.

The odd truth about him is that he's an actor, not a leader.
  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
Yep, I don't believe him anymore. He can say anything at this point but I don't trust him. I have to see ACTION. Nice words just aren't good enough anymore.

maybe so, but when she said Obama had "San Francisco values" that kind of turned me off... I mean isn't that code for "he supports the gays?" She advised her husband during the DADT fiasco. Why would she be any better?
  • liberalart76 · 6 months ago
This is a brilliant suggestion. "Coolness" is perhaps Obama White House's most treasured asset. But on gay rights, he is waaaaaay UNcool and UNmodern.

To a lot of Americans, on the left and amongst the young, being timid on gay rights is UNcool and UNmodern - time to start tagging Obama with it.

And meanwhile as a lifelong Democrat my message to elected Democrats from the President downto dog catcher is.....

NO GAY RIGHTS, NO GAY $$$ !
  • terrya · 6 months ago
Why do I get the feeling that it just gets worse and worse?
  • eclare · 6 months ago
    Because you've been paying attention.
  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
Because it is becoming more and more obvious Obama NEVER had a plan because, in fact, he was for putting us off and actively working against us to prove his bona fides to the hateful "power elites" in Washington, DC. Or worse, he has personal animosity against the LGBT community.
  • BlueJelloElf · 6 months ago

Rhandi Rhodes is talking about this right now.

She saying it is what we signed up for.....with Obama....

    Hmmmm.

She's playing the clip of Obama being interviewed by Rick Warren.
  • scottinsf · 6 months ago
    Who?
  • mml34 · 6 months ago
Randi Rhodes is a moron. Sorry, but it's true. She interviewed Melissa Etheridge back in December re: the Rick Warren controversy.

It was vomit-worthy. They BOTH fawned all over Obama and "change" and "hope." "Give him a chance.... who cares about Rick Warren - if this is what Obama has to do to get real change, so what?" Now Randi has the nerve to tell me this is what "I" signed up for?!! WHATEVER. She lost me when she went jihad on Hillary for some unforgotten reason (probably related to Randi believing that Obama was the messiah).

Randi Rhodes is a crock and so is Melissa Etheridge and the rest of the gay celebrity circuit.

Where were they when I (with some of my straight friends and my mother) was out protesting Prop 8 passing?

Where was their money when Brad Pitt was donating $100K to the "No on 8" crowd?

Where were they with their "No on 8" signs?

Where were they when I was out protesting the CA Supreme Court decision on May 26?

Where were all of our celebrity "leaders?" Out to lunch I guess.

You can say what you want about Bill Clinton, he's worthy of some criticism, but Barry Obama makes Clinton seem like a euphemism for sincerity.
  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
I wholeheartedly disagree. Randi Rhodes is NOT a moron. In fact, I usually agree with what she says.

  • R_Elland · 6 months ago
Okay, I'm sorry but at this point, the way this whole story has been developing, with one idiotic action after another getting the administration in hotter and hotter water, I'm now fully expecting someone to be overheard saying something extremely inflammatory.

Something so bad that it utterly destroys the Obama and Democratic influence with GLBT culture forever. It's like a classic take down story with one disaster after another up to a climax of a finish!
  • scottinsf · 6 months ago
I honestly think he will veto the hate crimes bill. We already know he doesn't give a shit about the Geneva Conventions and the crimes Bushco committed, why should we expect any different in regards to hate crimes?
  • jm · 6 months ago
Could this administration be any more stuck in the 90s?

First, they announce that they're the first administration that let gays march in the inauguration parade, but Clinton did that in '97.

Then, they announce they're the first to appoint someone to a Senate-approved position within the first 100 days of the administration, but Clinton did that back in '93.

Third, they floated the possibility of an openly gay ambassador, as if we haven't had those before.

    Now this.

Is this what counts as progress in Illinois?? I'm seriously asking, because I can't think why they think they should get credit for this crap.
  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
They shouldn't and they ARE, indeed, stuck in the 90's.
  • DaveVentura · 6 months ago
There was a gay ambassador under Bush no less. More and more Obama seems to be copying Bush on everything while trying to generate big PR over minor things.
  • leliorisen · 6 months ago
It's time for the new White House quiz show, entitled "The Joke's On You!"

To play, just answer the following question:

What is the Administration giving the glbt community?

Answer: a) The back of their hand
    b) Table scraps
    c) Annoyed indifference
    d) A shell game
    e) All of the above

If you answered E, you are entitled to 2 tickets to the upcoming fundraiser, starring Joe Biden, and featuring a supporting cast of Obamapologists, because conveniently, there are still some seats available.

You still have to pay full price, but think of the networking possibilities!

  • TrueBleuCA · 6 months ago
John use to be a regular call up when CNN was addressing various issues, including non GLBT issues. Not sure if John has fallen from their graces for being an honest outspoken advocate or what. I agree they need to get John back on the tube.
  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
Speaking of: Mike Rogers was just on MSNBC. I mean I'm happy for him, but I was like.... Mike Rogers? Why is he being asked to speak on this when John broke this story?

Also, Rogers was WAYYYYY too apologetic for the Obama Admin if you ask me. I mean, he didn't express my outrage at all. It was almost as if he was carefully trying to sound balanced. Sometimes there is just no excuse for someone's behavior and outrage is the appropriate response.
  • leliorisen · 6 months ago
I heard Mike Rogers on Ed Schultz' radio show today. He totally sounded like an apologist for the Obama administration. Having just seen him in "Outrage," I was surprised at his lack of bite. He made it seem like today's response was a good one. And that was after Schultz kept trying to get him to talk about the growing anger.

Schultz seemed to indicate he would be on his MSNBC show this evening as well, saying he would see him later on television, or something to that effect.

I really hate when the chosen spokespeople are incapable of conveying the honest feelings of the community.
  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
I totally agree. I thought it might be me, but he was absolutely trying to play apologist... I just wonder if he thought if he acted too angry he wouldn't be called back?
  • TrueBleuCA · 6 months ago

I think I saw part of that, as well and thought, "Wow, no emotion AT ALL!" Would have rather have had a neutral straight reporter speaking on the subject, huh?
  • HereinDC · 6 months ago
The MSM is all amazed that Iran is blocking reporters from reporting....that reporters can't report the news....

Well, here is John Aravosis...living and working here in Washington DC.....and the MSM can't find the time to interview the person who is at the forefront of reporting this Obama fiasco?

  • JustAGuy · 6 months ago
    I tend to agree.

Rahm Emanuel is definitely a mixed bag.

His voting record in Congress was decidedly pro-gay.

However, he has a reputation for being a pathological asshole and a machine politician of the first order.

If there is anyone whispering into Obama's ear about how best to play the gay-card, it would be Emanuel.

All this flak could be avoided if Barack could just keep his promise to repeal DOMA (at least the provisions that have us lockjawed out of federal benefits for all GLBT). Repeal just that portion and we'll give you some time to repeal the rest of it that has to do with state issues. It cannot be all that hard, of course unless you don't intend to even attempt to keep your promise.
  • Deacon_Blues · 6 months ago
Great. Just frackin' great. For the first time in my life I actually donate to a candidate I believe in, and once he gets in office -- surprise -- he goes back on his campaign promises. What really depresses me is that in four years I'll sit out the election, like many of you will, and the Republifacists will put Newt or Sarah or god help us Jeb, in office, and what's left of the country will go down the tubes. Just frackin' great.
  • cowboyneok · 6 months ago
President Obama could rapidly fix this. Its gonna take more than a stupid memorandum. They KNOW what they need to do. Democrats need to pressure him to issue EXECUTIVE ORDERS now on STOP LOSS on DADT, pass ENDA and repeal DOMA. He also needs to punish the person in the White House who let this get so out of hand in the first place... or he needs to take a good long hard look in the mirror if it is personally HIS fault.
  • scottinsf · 6 months ago
I'm as embarrassed as you are. I convinced my four siblings and their wives to support and vote for Obama. I can guarantee that they will vote against him in '12. Unfortunately, they're repug leaning and the only reason they voted for him was because they understand this issue and how it affects my husband and I.

    So much for that.
  • DaveVentura · 6 months ago
ALWAYS VOTE. I find both Democrat and Republican parties to be more or less the same. I think what the DemPublicans need is "competition" with a viable third party (not that I'd ever join a political party as I don't believe in them). More and more people are designating themselves as independents. The problem is that there isn't enough competition yet for the DemPublicans to fear that they wont be able to continue to get away with this crap.

That's amazing. It really is nothing new. By the way.
The anti-decriimation policy which he wants to restate is meaningless. It has no enforcement mechanism whatsoever ! Also I would like to add that Bush had flirted with the idea of allowing people to designate a person who could receive their federal annuity. Right now if you die only your spouse can get an annuity vs a lump sum payment.
They thought about doing it in a way that didn't necesarily 'endorse homosexuality'. Since anyone could designate another person. They never did it ,but it seems to me that this would be an easy way for Obama to do something substantive.
  • jeffreyi · 6 months ago
Correct me if I'm wrong. Currently, as far as I know, domestic partners are not entitled to receive retirement and health care benefits. This is not the same as long-term care, (mentioned above) which is insurance a federal employee can purchase. There is no cost-share from the government, (at least in the USDA agency I retired from) for long-term care insurance; that cost is borne by the employee. The only benefit is that the government can negotiate for group rates for this insurance, so it's competitive with other providers. Same thing for life insurance; the employee pays the entire cost of the premium if they choose to participate. Long-term care is nursing homes, assisted living and the like. Health care benefits and federal retirement are another story. The government co-pays a percentage of the premiums for health care, and federal employees can choose from a number of plans to fit their situations. The health plans are good; at least I don't have any complaints. If access to those benefits are extended to domestic partners in the same way that they are available to marriage partners, that is a huge gain for domestic partners.
  • cloudphreak · 6 months ago
You are totally correct. The reason they can offer long term care to distant relatives of federal employees is only because the government is not paying one cent of the premium.

Subject: Error in Story on Obama Providing Benefits to Gay, Federal Employees

Dear Mr. Barabak and Miss Garrison,
Thank you for writing the story in today's paper regarding Obama providing some benefits to gay, federal employees. The issue needs visibility but the story contained an error in the very first paragraph. The benefits will not include the most important benefits such as health and retirement benefits due to the Defense of Marriage Act.

Isn't this something that the media should have research before just repeating the talking points from the administration? It's really disappointing that the most basic facts can be gotten wrong.

Also, the measly benefits that will be offered by Obama tonight are already available as evidenced by the Office of Personnel Management's own website. Please see this post at AmericaBlog.com for the details http://www.americablog.com/2009/06/is-obama-giv....

So in essence, we are being offered very little indeed. Questions that the media should be asking the president and his administration are state perfectly by activist David Mixner at http://www.davidmixner.com/2009/06/waiting-for-....

AmericaBlog should be credited for breaking the story last Friday regarding the brief filed by the Department of Justice to defend DOMA. It was the statements in that brief that finally broke the patience of the gay community with respect to Obama and the Democrats.

lets assume even though we know it is higher that gays make up 10 percent of the population well you have less than 80 percent voting, most gays vote, also you have most gay friends, and family members vote so 10 time 2 is 20 percent including mom and dad then you have sister brother lets be under and say 25-30 then you have friend and we have tons so it goes up to maybe 40 seeing as most gays did vote in the last election and worked like slaves to get family and friends to vote your looking at almost 30-40 percent of the vote and most for obama noone takes that into consideration. so tell the family tell the friends no money to the sin of a party. no gay rights no gay $$ that should be a big motto for all of us

Its not clear - the OPM website has been inconsistent - for example, under the Long Term care section you would not be eligible as a partner.. see
    http://www.ltcfeds.com/eligibility/index.html#r...
    It now reads:
    Qualified Relatives

If you are a qualified relative as described below, you can apply even if the person you're related to does not apply, or even if the person you're related to applies but is not approved for coverage.

    * Spouses of employees listed above

    * Spouses of annuitants listed above

    * Surviving spouses of active and retired members of the uniformed services who are receiving a Federal survivor annuity

    * Parents, parents-in-law, and stepparents of living employees listed above (Parents, parents-in-law, and stepparents of annuitants and retired members of the uniformed services are NOT eligible)

And yes... I too am a Fed employee who's slogged out the benefit battle for years.
Let's hope it covers DoD and DHS employees since they are no longer under the Civil Service Reform Act of 1978..

This fiasco was thrown together because of the backlash by the gay community (and rightfully so)

Obama is looking like a very weak president. His strength and resolve has all but vanished with his presidency. It's like he stopped thinking for himself as soon as he walked into the White House and only listens to his homophobic insiders.

This isn't the change I voted for.

Obama use to have a big gay rights section on his website that listed everything he was for and would fight for as president. As soon as he was elected, all of these things were removed from his website. I figured it was because he was president now and he was going to put his words into action. All he did was erase his words and that's a injustice to every single member of the gay community. What would have been nice to witness was to keep that list on his website and then cross them out as he accomplished them to show everyone he meant what he said. Instead, his words no longer carry meaning.

My father always told me that a man who will lie to you will also steal from you so I guess we should keep an eye on our wallets as well. Obama has already drained our treasury and given it to the corrupt bankers and criminal CEO's who are finding it hard to get by on only $50 million a year now. Is Obama the elitist others claimed him to be? It appears so.

Very disappointing, to say the least. I still have high hopes for this president, but the red flags are beginning to flap in the breeze. I hope the breeze does not turn into a roaring wind.
